kinda of freaking out here Horde- just came back from physical therapy, and there was an Arab man parked in front of my house with blinkers on. He was standing in front of my house, he put a cigarette carton in my trash, and just stood there. I asked him what he wanted/if he needed help, and he said he was just smoking a cigarette. He stood there until I brought my dogs outside in front. Then he left.

His license plate was covered up too. I am just this short of panicking.

That is really unsettling. I'd suggest taking the carton out of the trash with gloves to preserve prints, but maybe MPPP's idea of calling authorities is better. In any event, at least write down all identifying info you can remember about him and his car. The license plate thing is particularly disturbing.

54 CBD, Thank you for introducing me to this artist. His technique is wonderful. Look at the way he captures the color and subtle folds of the model's dress, the skin tones in light and shade, and the detail of the background items. They all contribute to the feel of the girl, comfortable and interested, as she holds the book in a reading light.

I looked at some of Alfred Stevens' other paintings on his Wiki page and they are similarly effective. Some of them remind me a bit of Vermeer in the use of everyday poses and the incredible detail he brings to the figures and background without romanticizing. These are lovely, pleasant works that people would enjoy for themselves, not for 'deeper' meaning.

The quality of Stevens' painting would make good lessons for people to copy as they learn to draw.

The show airs on Sundays, so the grumble thread would probably have to appear on a Monday (evening?).

My wife and I do have a developing tradition where we watch every episode of GoT up to the premiere of the new season (we've done it for at least three years now, so maybe it's not that developing anymore), so I'll be up on it all.

I'd be up for it, but we'd probably need permission from the bossman.

99 My wife wanted to go on a cleanse this week, so I'm doing it with her to make it more palatable for her.

It's pretty much vegan food for 10 days (we'll probably do no more than 7).

It's freaking miserable...after one day. I watched the 80s comedy version of Dragnet, and now all I can think about is chilli dogs.

There feels like there's a drive to an ending now, as opposed to a nearly constant sense of wanderlust which had permeated the show.

Actually, I agree with both of you. There was necessary tightening of story lines going on the past couple seasons... AND it's turned to standard fare soap opera pabulum, with tatas as weeners.

They want to bring the series to a conclusion. That's fine. Apparently it's easier to do that if you just turn it into a bland, ordinary network type series.

My point is, as far as tv shows go, the first few seasons it was as great as any show ever produced. The last few? Ordinary.

Arya's story (no spoilers, I swear), is a good example of Martin's inability to tell a story anymore.

She wanders forever, is in training with the faceless men forever. There's a complete lack of efficiency that's not really buoyed by any deeper exploration of the character.

211 GRRRRR Martin gets a lot of criticism, and much of it is deserved, but there are two camps on his books, apparently. Those who find them tedious, because of the endless story lines, and those who sorta look at the endless story lines and say "well yeah, it's a big world. With lots of people in it."

I was more or less in the second camp. The problem is, of course, how to tie it all up, and it's not REALLY Martin's fault that it got too big for any one man to do that.

I give him credit for trying something here. A big world, with lots of ugliness, and bad guys winning as often as the good guys, if not more.

Turns out tv viewers don't want that. They want the good guys to win eventually.

He's said that there will be differences between the book and the show (I think the implication was that the endings might be slightly different).

One small example: Robb Stark's wife is still alive in the books but not the show.

I just honestly don't believe that he'll finish the books. He's got at least 2 more (he's hinted that he may turn book 7 into 2 books), and people have been waiting for The Winds of Winter for, how long? Too long. He's in bad health, and he's probably just not gonna get there.

I wouldn't be surprised if the larger arcs aren't the same, though, between the show and Martin's wishes. I bet the Battle of the Bastards happens in the same way in Winter as it did in the show, with the same result.

It would be interesting to say the least if something that big ended differently between show and book.

Most people don't want the bad guys to win in their stories. They see enough of that in real life and in history.

I don't watch GoT because the nudity and violence are thrown in for "mature" storytelling that is as bland as zombies and GRRRL power. But I figure it's close to the disaster that the relaunch of Battlestar Galactica was.

That's not to say you can't tell good guy wins or at least sets the table for something better stories in a derivative and boring manner. Hollywood does it all of the time.

Zod wanted the bad guys to win in Game of Thrones. The "good guys" are beneath contempt. The early beheading of John Stark(?) was promising only an amuse-bouche. I stopped watching with the Mrs. when it became clear that the necessary cleansing on that less-than-mediocre show was gonna take more than about three episodes.

The mid series books dragged, but when Sanderson took over after Jordan's death, Sanderson gets things going. If you got bogged down in the middle, I would suggest getting the first book Sanderson wrote in the series (The Gathering Storm) and start there. I completed the series before I could get through Martin's Game of Thrones books (which i will try again, at some point)

In the TV show his wife's name is Talisa, a woman from the city of Volantis. In the books his wife's name is Jane Westerling. House Westerling is vassal house of the Lannisters.

As usual, the book is MUCH better. The original trailer for the flick rocked. But the best part of the film is the way it's photographed. The Kazakh dood that directed really has a unique visual style. You should check out his Russian language vampire flicks, Night Watch and Day Watch.

A poll released today gives Marcon a 61% to 39% advantage over Le Pen, with two weeks to go to the election. I'm thinking a low turnout on the Left and a significant and silent move to the right. Marcon is the status quo candidate, and the French have made it quite clear that the status quo is unviable.

Le Pen will win.

There might very well be another attack before the election, and from what I hear, the French have adopted the same philosophy as the Islamic mayor of London--terror is just part of living in a big city. Can't stop it. Get used to it.

I think the first post-round 1 poll is interesting. For an alleged "centrist" who has been endorsed by both losing mainstream parties, Macron's 61% support sounds pretty soft to me.

And Le Pen's polling number is 39%, when she received about 22% of the first round votes. She's not a "marginalized" candidate. Thirty-nine per cent may not be forty-eight per cent, but it's within striking distance of victory - at this point.
