A WISH TO LIVE FOREVER

I met a fairy who said she would grant me one wish.
Immediately I said, "I want to live forever."
"Sorry," said the fairy, "I'm not allowed to grant eternal life."
"OK," I said, "Then, I want to die after Congress gets some work done. "

"You crafty bastard," said the fairy.

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"Let me tell you about endangered species, all right? Saving endangered species is just one more arrogant attempt by humans to control nature. It's arrogant meddling. It's what got us in trouble in the first place. Doesn't anybody understand that? Interfering with nature. Over 90%, way over 90% of all the species that have ever lived on this planet, ever lived, are gone. They're extinct. We didn't kill them all. They just disappeared. That's what nature does.

"We’re so self-important. So self-important. Everybody’s going to save something now. “Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails.” And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. What? Are these fucking people kidding me? Save the planet, we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet. We haven’t learned how to care for one another, we’re gonna save the fucking planet?George Carlin

The Media. We discuss "Fake News" and "Bias". What is the greatest form of Media Bias? Deciding what is and isn't reported to the public.

....It appears likely that Green was abusing other boys over a period of at least twelve years in at least two different school districts, and Green’s crime is not the half of it.

I learned about this crime for one reason. In January, I became editor of a new, nonprofit, online publication -- Sentinelksmo.org -- designed to counter the disinformation spread by the overwhelmingly liberal media in Missouri and Kansas. Over the years, people have approached me with stories about regional abuses, and I had an easier time placing those stories nationally than locally. In these two deeply red states, there was no media outlet of consequence halfway friendly to conservative causes. Now there is, the Sentinel.

No one has ever accused the Media of being Rocket Scientists.

You might want to sit down for this news. Australia’s Telegraph newspaper has uncovered startling images that are available on this newfangled “Internet” that seems to be all the rage. They’re images of (wait for it) pornography.

In what the Telegraph hails as an EXCLUSIVE, the newspaper reveals that its “special investigation” has “uncovered the dark side of social media.” Apparently it’s easy to find this kind of pornographic material under the hashtag #NSFW. Oh dear!

A recent poll indicates most voters back legalization of marijuana.

The Trump administration has hinted at cracking down on states that have legalized recreational marijuana use, but according to a new Morning Consult poll, a majority of registered voters think it should be legal across the country.

The ONT's opinion? Let the people decide. Then regulate the hell out of it like booze and tobacco. After all the Nanny State has to Nanny.

Thinking about sending your son to an All-Male College? Cross off Deep Springs College of CA off your list.

There are over 4,000 colleges and universities in the United States. There are only four that are all male. But that is at least one too many, apparently. A California Appeals Court ruled last week that Deep Springs College, a school with only twenty-six students, may start admitting women.

Founded a century ago by industrialist L. L. Nunn, Deep Springs has long had an odd-ball education plan. Students get a rigorous liberal arts education while they are running a farm. They go to school for free and they are also part of the school’s management, helping to govern both its day-to-day operation and its finances. Deep Springs is a two-year college but its students are typically admitted as transfers to the best colleges in the country.

The failure to plan, has its consequences. Somali pirates learn the hard way.

Obama, Holder than Lynch all hated Cops, or so it seemed. Donald Trump campaigned on a Law & Order theme. How President Trump can help out the Cops.

The most immediate goal of the Trump administration should be to change the elite-driven narrative about the criminal-justice system. That narrative, which holds that policing is lethally racist, has dominated public discourse since the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014. In response, officers are backing off of proactive policing, and violent crime is rising fast: 2015 saw the largest one-year spike in homicides nationwide in nearly 50 years. That violent-crime increase has continued unabated through 2016 and into the early months of 2017. A Trump administration official—perhaps Attorney General Sessions, or the president himself—should publicly address the question of what we expect from police officers: Do we want them to be proactive and to try to stop crime before it happens? Or do we want them to be purely reactive, responding to crime only after someone has been victimized? The administration should explain that data-driven, proactive policing made possible the country’s 20-year, 50 percent violent-crime decline that began in the mid-1990s.

To forgive and forget. Nurture or nature?

Forgive and forget is advice easier for some people to follow than others. But a newly published neuroscience study has given those who hold onto grudges a good excuse: It seems the ability to forgive is linked to the size of a specific area in the brain.

Love him or hate him, Bill Maher is usually spot on when it comes to the 1st Amendment. Bill Maher correctly defines what UC-Berkeley is.

79 I worked at a production of "Hedwig and The Angry Inch" this week, and part of the gag is that the show takes place in an abandoned theatre that closed down after one showing of "Hurt Locker: The Musical." They even littered the theatre with fake playbills for "Hurt Locker: The Musical", which are kind of amazing. Some of the upcoming productions advertised are "Hamilton! A Musical about the life of Scott Hamilton", "Tyler Perry is Medea is Medea", and a staged reading of Margot Robbie's Vanity Fair profile.

86 Congress does occasionally get some work done, if you count continuing resolutions as budget or policy 'work'.

Better would be to say you don't want to die until the US Congress has no lawyers as members.

That should get you a few million years or until the permanent end of Congress, whichever comes first.

Avoid anything sweet, dark, or bubbly. Avoid most mixed drinks in general, and specialty shots in particular.

A simple gin or vodka martini would probably be best. Always alternate with a glass of water between drinks, of course.

Additional tips:

* Eat a decent meal about half a day beforehand that is fatty, has lots of dairy, or involves fish.

* Preemptively take tums or alka-seltzer.

* Before drinking, coat your stomach with some olive or vegetable oil, or at least some milk.

190 I was reading that too, that it was mainly the young Murdoch boys' wives that were the problem, being leftie loons.

This is the end of FOX as we know it, I think. Rupert is getting too old, and those boys are taking it over.

Supposedly, Roger Ailes quipped about one of them, "tell me that mouth hasn't sucked a cock or two". And that got back to him, which made them get it in for ol' Randy Roger. And MeAgain got tight with the Murdoch boys against Roger and O'Reilly.

Firing O'Reilly is MeAgain's belated revenge.

When his sons took over two years ago, however, they immediately set about creating a warmer and fuzzier workplace, at least in parts of the company, and moving away from an anti-politically correct environment that, at least in the case of Fox News, seemed to enable the kind of behavior of which Mr. Ailes and Mr. O'Reilly have been accused. 255 That Romeo & Juliet song for many years has been one of my favorite Dire Straits pieces - it's just so wistful, and sorrowfully beautiful. And he doesn't even get the glory of dying, he just gets dumped. For years I didn't think anyone else knew about it, cuz it never got played commercially. And slowly I'm finding that a lot of other people DID know about it, and felt about it the way I did. Doesn't mean much, but it's nice to know.

289 I'll be the first to say that Google Maps doesn't always get it right. A few years ago, when I was still working for the Cincinnatian Hotel, a total of four men came to the front desk one night (at different times) and asking where the strip club was. "There hasn't been a strip near here for decades -- if there has been one here at all," I kept telling them. Finally, I asked the last guy where he was getting his information.

"I Googled it," he told me, and gave me the name of the strip club. So I Googled the name of the club on the front desk computer, and it came up on the first try -- but the Google Earth picture showed the employees' entrance to the hotel!

And I told him, "If there's a strip club here, I've been missing out all these years!"

Yes. This is what makes me think Jenner is still attracted to women. He has a shallow vagina because he opted for a simple penile inversion. 415 I'd heard the term "Damascus Steel" before and I've seen the beautiful pattern on good blades, but now I have gotten to see the process and it is really cool.

Posted by: Slapweasel, (Cold1) (T) at April 24, 2017 12:30 AM (6gk0M)

I have three knives by Tommy McKissack, former member of the Knifemaker's Guild, former Brother in Law, and one of the best bladesmiths in the nation.

The smallest, a "gentleman's folder", is a 2-3/4" Damascus blade, solid 18 k gold cross pins for the "bark" elephant ivory handles, solid 18k gold for the opening and closing "shell" shaped tabs, German Silver bolsters and stainless liners.

But it's the 440c Stainless 4-1/2" blade swept point belt knife, with the sanded elkhorn handle, brass tang and butt, that takes pride of place.

With it, I've cleaned, skinned and quartered nearly 100 deer since 1982. And, it's his Serial #49.

I only have to touch the edge, every three deer or thereabouts.

And yes, he does his own heat treating, of course.

The truly high end custom blades are a species unto themselves.

418 410 You appreciate the finished product, of course. They're beautiful blades. I never saw the labor that went into them and the missteps that can occur until this show.

This kind of craftsmanship is a lost art.
Posted by: Slapweasel, (Cold1) (T) at April 24, 2017 12:42 AM (6gk0M)

Somewhat. A lot of bladesmiths practice it. but the high level expertise is lacking. There really isn't that big of a market for blades that expensive. I know I have no use for a blade costing over $150.00.

They are beautiful though.

421 Slap. I'll send you some photos.

Tommy dropped out of the Guild. The travel, show schedule and "internal politics" were unbearable.

He's in "West Texas" (won't name the town, duh, 'net!), and let's say it's about a four to five hour drive to any large enough airport.

And the Knifemaker's Guild wants members to show at least 4x per year, preferably more.

His clientele in professional hunting guides alone, keeps him afloat in orders, without advertising.

I learned how to sharpen knives using a fine-grit belt from him.

That cast iron 1"x42" Craftsman belt machine in the garage, keeps all the house blades, beyond razor sharp.

A tomato never stands a fighting chance, here.

I just enjoy the artistry of perfectionists. I used to be a "duplicationist" with pencil drawings. I could recreate anything as long as I had a picture.

It is a skill that I had not honed since I drew things on the back of tanning salon schedules during down-times.

This is more of a Manly art formed of fire, steel, hammers and love.

Will the REAL Damascus Steel Please Stand Up?
Walter Sorrells

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISSGL4Ns2qw

He never uses the term "Mechanical Damascus" for pattern welded items, but collectors of Persian Indian & related edged weapons do. There's some thought that pattern welded blades are mechanically stronger than "True Damascus" blades, as the alternating hard & soft layers provide a harder edge yet with better impact strength.

Posted by: Arbalest at April 24, 2017 01:05 AM (FlRtG)

425 Contrary to convention, the real magic in Damascus isn't the forging of disparate metals.

Its the skill to heat treat the blade in such a way as to be beneficial to both.

Many a perfectly forged Damascus blade has failed in the heat treat furnace, quench and annealing stages, when those stages are performed....unskillfully.

426 A question for anyone who thinks they can reasonably respond:

To those of you (or any of you whom know those that do) whether or not you are well-meaning and regardless of which side of the aisle you reside who state: "climate change is real, we just don't know the cause"- what is meant by "climate change" as used in that sentence. It seems axiomatic that climates are not static anywhere on the planet to the point that they have NO CHANGE, no matter how slight from year to year, decade to decade, century, etc. So then what does "climate change" mean to both those on the left and right who find middle ground to agree "something must be done"?

I read several of those statements in comments earlier today and never had a chance to ask.

Anyone?

How sharp is it?

First week I had it, it cut through it's own leather sheath when not-carefully re-sheathing the blade.

Effort. Less. Ly.

Put it to you this way. Many people use a saw to split the pelvis of a deer they've bagged.

I just use the knife, and with one decisive motion, cut right through the bone.

Same with the sternum. Not even much effort, there.

And with that, I'm to sleepville.

Hasta la nite nite, Horde!

If I recall correctly, "Climate change" is simply a bogus term invented to replace the term "global warming" when it became apparent that there has been no "global warming" since 1998.

"Climate change" is just a cipher for the concept "bad things are happening because you release carbon into the air". Tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, heat waves, cold snaps, etc. are all to blamed on "climate change". Supposedly, if we all stopped using carbon, none of those things would happen any more.

Actually there's the rub. As one of the QOTD points out, the world has always changed and gotten over it. But curiously enough, the Left thinks that we MUST become involved and FIX things beyond our control, at enormous cost and dubious at best benefit.

For example, since the end of the last Ice Age around 12,000 years ago the sea level has risen 125 meters. That's around 400 feet of rise in that time frame. And yet we must do something because the sea might rise another 20 feet in the next 200 years. Might. Go up another 5%. OMFG! Do something, stat! Even if it doesn't work, we must TRY! Because the result is UNTHINKABLE.

Except the beach dweller of 12k years ago should now be living behind a 420 foot tall wall. Or, you know, move inland. Options, how do they work?

Have a nice day.

496 Climate change is a hedge. They lost with global cooling in the 70s, and global warming in the 80s/90s, when the Earth's weather refused to do exactly as they said...

But they still want you to believe that your carbon dioxide emissions (the same culprit in both!) are going to cause an apocalypse.

What it's really about is religion. Specifically, they are one.

They have a deity (Gaia)
A Prophet (Al Gore)
A Priesthood (approved climate scientists)
Holy Orders (Everything from Sierra Club to ELF)
Original Sin (you exhale carbon dioxide)
Sin & Sinners (pollution/polluters)
Heresy & Heretics (Denial/Deniers)
Apostasy & Apostates (skeptical science/scientists)
An Inquisition (the EPA)
Holidays (Earth Day, Arbor Day)
Rituals (Earth Hour, Recycling)
A promise of salvation (Green tech)
And an apocalypse (Earth becomes just like Venus).

At this point, how can you say it's not one? They aren't scientists pursuing facts, they are zealots protecting a sacred dogma.

497 have you ever noticed that those who are adamant abut protecting "endangered species" are the same ones who believe in evolution?

498 Okay, back home again.
Big recliner still comfy? Check

TV shows on at the proper times and channels? Check

Comfy bed with the right amount of blankets? Check

Coffee tastes better because the water isn't some desalinated reconstructed piffle that comes from the tap? Check.

Nice slow internet from ATT? Check.

Okay JJ. Bring on the morning report!!

499 Got to get ready early for the big "March for Climate Change" (stop climate change) on the 29th. Didn't those assholes just have a march last Sat?
Don't they have anything else to do on weekends.

501 How do you get from Aristotle or Kant to "hit people with bike locks"?

Sure thrilled to wake up to that one.

Though I'd like to implicate Levi-Strauss (no, man -- the jeans!), I'll suggest that when you don't finish a degree program, can't apply for tenure-track, and are reduced to "erstwhile" positions in Other Subject at a community colleges, your fate is pretty well sealed. It's the old Hegelian synthesis writ large.

Why do I get a feeling this guy wasn't real strong in Aristotle, or the Pre-Socratics? Oh it's the bike locks. Thales the Miletian was down on 'em.

502 Okay. Fixed the ATT slow internet by rebooting the router. Here's a million dollar idea! Make a router and/or a system that just freakin' works.

503 Can you guess who the AP is talking about?

Audiences have greeted her with loud cheers and ovations, as they did on Saturday night.

People also would applaud wildly for a cigarette smoking chimp. No accounting for entertainment preference.

517 FWIW, I posted the entire Carlin Earth Day video on my Facebook page on this last Earth Day. Today, I looked to see if I had any comments or likes.

My post had been DISAPPEARED without any explanation.
