Don't Trust The Dow As An Indicator: Diversification Is Your Friend!
Almost very financial report on radio or TV features a breathless recitation of the state of the Dow Jones Industrial Index as if it were the gold standard of measurements of the state of the economy.
But as any statistician will tell you, using only 30 companies to gauge the state of a group of almost 4,000 publicly held companies that trade stock is a recipe for some odd fluctuations that do not reflect reality. Add to that the fact that the Dow is not randomly selected, and that only a tortured definition of "industrial' would allow inclusion of American Express or Walt Disney, and you get a warped picture of the economy. A better measure is the S&P 500, or the Russell 2000, or the Wilshire 5000. The S&P 500 is a group of the largest companies in the country, the Russell 2000 is the bottom 2,000 companies in the Russell 3000, and the Wilshire 5000 is pretty much every company publicly traded in America. Same with a large telecom that had to adjust the way it was showing certain capital charges...they had to change their quarter end balance sheet and move some things to the following quarter. No net change, but the stock took a dip nonetheless.
The stock market indices are good indicators for investors...but not much else.

Exactly. The graph kind of refutes the article. The absolute values of the two indices have diverged, but the pattern of movement not so much. So from any given point at which you buy in, it seems that you will (per the graph) experience very similar outcomes as between the two.

Picking nits is sort of what we do here!
The Dow and the SP are going to track roughly the same over long periods, especially because they change the Dow components occasionally. But for short term stuff the Dow simply isn't as accurate.
And of course you are correct, that would be much better. Where the fvck were you when I was writing this?

Yesterday I had to go to Vital Records to pick up several birth certificates and marriage licenses that we needed for an estate. Young couple came in while I was there and asked for a marriage license. Clerk looked up their birth certificates to confirm age and asked the girl for her birthday. She was born in January, 1999.

Yes they are but for very good reason. Every pension plan and retirement account in the country is way over-exposed to the market now. A 30% correction (which we're overdue for) and several states won't be able to hide their bankrupt status any more. Things are much worse now than they were in 2008.

Build up the holdings on that stock until it gets to where I want it, then go find another stock.In terms of picking stocks - I go with ones I know. Plus I always look for ones that pay dividends. And I reinvest those dividends.Pick a dollar amount you are comfortable with and have it automatically withdrawn from an account. This way you don't feel it.As Vic said - this is a long term investment. Doesn't matter if you only have $1,000 invested, $100k, more or less. Do what you are comfortable with.

Portsmouth, NH (notably hardcore left and very much a NIMBY crowd) has outlawed them. People who recently moved into the new downtown condos are afraid of the noise, parking issues, etc. Yet live across the street from bars and 2 miles from a working National Guard Airbase (which they bitch about regularly as well).

That said, it is beginning to dawn on even the most luddite of eco-fiends out here that unchecked immigration is despoiling the CA ecosystem they love so much.
And on the flip side, it is dawning on the actual Mexican Americans out here that the eco fiends would be happy to see their hard-won irrigated farms turn into dust bowls. And even if these illegals are vaguely kin, the illegals are overcrowding the public schools, hospitals and other infrastructure upon which the Mexican Americans depend.
If the moribund GOP can exploit the Green vs. Brown rift and go "Citizenist", perhaps there is hope.

The 500 stocks in the S&P are not 500 uncorrelated stocks but rather all of the banks in the S&P are highly correlated as are autos, homebuilders etc. So the 500 stocks are not a diversified index at all. Not really much more diversified than the Dow when you consider all of the redundant and overlapping stocks/sectors. That's why your charts actually show the Dow, S&P, and Russell are all highly correlated unlike your headline suggests.

I could be wrong, but if you look at historical trends like the Schiller P/E ratio, the average multiples look sky high to me.
If at some point we get back to "normal" interest rates, I would gladly take a 5% risk free rate of return and leave the stock market for a while. I tend to think a lot of people will do the same.

Point me to any study that shows the Dow is more volatile than the other indices. You can't. All of the indices are actively managed. So your thesis is backward... in the short-term the index is fine for measuring performance but over the long-term they all suffer from survivorship bias. The original Dow 30 would probably be down 99% since inception but since failing companies are regularly replaced the performance of the index is quite good. That is an argument against Buy and Hold, not for it.

The point is that as a statistic it isn't a very good one because it is too small a sample. It amplifies small changes out of proportion to the market as a whole.

There are a lot of 'successful' businesses where the owners make next to no profit and pay themselves peanuts. I put the successful in quotes because that doesn't exactly fit my criteria for success. It's a job, sure. But long hours at less than minimum wage sounds more like hobby money.
In restaurants, if you survive ten years, that's a better ratio than 90% of other restaurant start-ups. Which is pretty much the ratio for all businesses.

I've been using eOption for years because it was the cheapest broker for traders without a lot of money to trade with. Commissions are $3 plus .15 per contract for options.
They've changed hands several times during the time I've been with them. This last change (Jan 2016) has been a disaster. The computer system has issues, such as displaying the wrong numbers for the market price and bid/ask spread. It's very hard to trade with bad info!
I've switched to OptionsHouse. Commissions are $4.95 plus .50 per contract. So far I've only used their (very nice) paper trading platform. (I'm getting warmed up while waiting for my deposit to clear.) I did learn after I signed up that if your balance drops below $1000 you lose access to real-time quotes.

I use the thinkorswim software paper money side to make all my decisions and just enter the orders on OH (have never had enough $$ for a live ToS account). Even on the paper money side the quotes are all live.

But Greenspan then earned the Easy Al nickname by constantly boosting bubble markets with easy money policy. Global markets became everything, and America First was tossed off the cliff with Buchanan and others that didn't share the globalist dream. "Smart" people were 100% invested.
Wall Street took control, millionaires became billionaires just by playing the markets KNOWING that interest rate policy was always going to bail out markets. After the dotcom bubble popped, they crossed another rubicon few recognized when the Fannie/Freddie scam was revealed. TARP ushered in the era of ZIRP (insane zero interest rate policy) and QE (printing money and having the fed reserve "buy" bonds when the market would not buy enough).
That floated US mushrooming debt for eight years as Obama played other games like billions on pallets to Iran, or confiscating Fannie/Freddie revenues and spending it "off book". Now the Goldman boys are thick as thieves inside Trump's offices, and the 20% that are "invested" demand markets go up, while the 80% need America First policy to rebuild the middle class.
Another economic indicator other than stock markets is small independent business startups ... people that invest in themselves and don't depend on other people's money. Amazon lost that easy money for some 20 years as they drove others out of business. That is part of the damage of easy money policy.
Market Players got very rich and now pretty much own our government .. it's a mess. Markets could drop back to DOW 10K, maybe they NEED to, but that is bad for any politician.

My lady liquor store owner and I have spoken about it more than once. There's a limited supply of it, and when she gets it she gets about 3 bottles which sell out in a few hours and which she sells at double the retail price.
If it were readily available, I'd be happy that I can get a good bourbon, but because it's impossible to find, I've built it up much more than logic would dictate. It's close to obsession levels.

Picture IBM with 160 stock price and GE with a 30 stock price. Any movement in IBM will carry 5x more weight on the dow movement, though IBM is actually a smaller company, they are worth 150b vs GE worth 250b.
Share price is pretty arbitrary making it a poor thing to weight an index off of. The price itself is completely dependent on how many shares are floating, which can be changed qt any time by the company through share splits, so it is arbitrary

Late to this party, but it seems that the Dow tracks pretty well with both the S&P and Wilshire indices. Thing is, none of them are predictive, especially when it comes to a single stock.
Most of my meagre investment capital is currently in some junior mining and oil companies, and either they win big, or lose big.

These loans have enabled stretching out college to 5, 6, 7 years and they use some of the loan money to pay for luxuries like iphones, vacations, etc. It's allowed many students to live in a manner that their future job (based on degree selection) could never support.
Why should we forgive that? It would teach all the wrong lessons.
Ideally, the debt should be transferred to the schools that encouraged this nonsense (Instapundit's idea).

I'm being serious: what if every US Citizen were cut a check by the Gov't for their share of the 2008 bailout that was given to the banks instead? Those checks would've been 6 figures. The citizens could then use that check to pay off their own debt (helping the banks) or for whatever they wanted to. Then let the bad banks fail and new ones open to take their place. How would that not have been better than the bailout? Yeah it's communist or whatever but in my mind it's no different than giving trillions directly to the banks and an infinitely better solution.

A debt is delinquint for 1 year: the school is on the hook for 20%.
It goes up year over year, 20% a year, until the school is on the hook for 80%, and is like that until the loan is paid off.

The reason that a small number of stocks cannot really serve as a proxy for the whole market is that anything to do with money is not normally distributed. More specifically, underlying market volatility is not normally distributed.
Instead, such things have a fat-tailed distribution of one sort or another (fat tailed like the prostitute in the last post).
The Black-Sholes model for pricing derivatives that is the basis for most financial modeling unfortunately assumes a normal distribution. This gives a good approximation of market prices and values right up to the moment that events force prices into the tails of the model. Then all bets are off and losses will far, far exceed any estimates.

As admirable as that sentiment is, and as stupid as the idea of student loan amnesty is, it is not the American tradition to always honor debts. We have differed from Europe on that point since our founding. Walter Russell Mead gives a pretty good overview of the American view of debt in his paper The Jacksonian Tradition.
I personally think it was a large mistake when Congress and Clinton made student loans non-dischargable debt back in the 90's. It wildly distorted the incentives to loan students money even for degrees that would never earn them enough to pay back those loans.

Getting the general public "invested" sounds fine, and those mutual funds (of mine) did great from '82 to '99. But easy money policy started to prop up markets, valuations are propped up based on what? Maybe the "normal" PE for a good company would be 4, not 24. But the Ponzi scheme aspect put everyone in, and as long as they stay for life and pass their portfolio on, those invested can be (relatively) rich, doing nothing.
The manipulation and economic policy makes for scams and corruption, Fannie Freddie sell junk as AAA, bubbles form and billionaires get bailouts and the bubbles stay inflated. Now all currencies are fiat, the "real" saver or man that invests in his own company can hardly compete against conglomerates with government backing and an ability to hire slaves and pollute in foreign lands.
Local banks, on the other hand, know their borrowers and demand a sound business plan and maybe collateral. But the too big to fail/jail banks were able to buy up solid banks, even though they screwed up. And now they pay 0% interest and fed policy pushes anyone seeking a return into stocks/bonds with more risk than they should/would normally take.
The problem is not the market concept.
