The Morning Report 4/21/17

Dean.jpg

Good morning, kids. Friday again, thank goodness. Lots of interesting things this morning. First of course is the aftermath of the Islamist terror attack in Paris yesterday. Aside from the blood and carnage, coming so close to the elections, does it help Marine LePen pull out the win even with the arcane French electoral system or more crucially the French national psyche of self-loathing masochism? Meanwhile over here, there are rumblings that both a reboot of the Obamacare Repeal/Replace and tax reform are on the front burner and perhaps close to happening. With that are the counter-rumblings that they ain't happening. Daniel Greenfield has another excellent essay (I'm becoming a big fan) as well as Rush's take on O'Reilly's demise. Up front, although at first glance it's just par for the course, I want to take the time to address Howard Dean. I don't want to let it slide. Let me say for his benefit and any other Leftist reading this, there is no such thing as hate speech. There's only speech. And in this country, it's still a G-d given right. So long as it does not openly incite violence, it's guaranteed. In any case it is you and your party and political movement that incite the violence, fought for slavery and segregation, locked citizens up in concentration camps, destroyed lives via a crushing socialist welfare state, that seeks the eradication of our Constitution, the dissolution of our society and the consolidation of power via unchecked mass migration and chaos. Barack Obama encouraged your minions not to sit down and have a civilized discourse over a cup of coffee but to get in our faces. You sir and your rotten ilk are the fascists and totalitarians. Much as it might personally satisfy me to see you muzzled, you have a right to spew your idiotic, inchoate drivel as much as I or Ann Coulter have the right to call you out on it. You, sir, are a tiresome fool, but you are dangerous nonetheless. If you are given time to obliquely if not openly call for the abolition of the 1st Amendment and a citizen's right to speak, I cannot allow that to go unanswered because if you have your way, I won't ever be able to.

Rant over. Links from around the world, across the nation and up your street. Have a better one and remain blessed.

Lipless Wonder Howard Dean Sez 1st Amendment Does Not Protect Ann Coulter

UPDATE: I have changed the headline for the first link to show only 1 Gendarme killed.

75 Anyway, fuck politics.

If you're home today, TCM is running a series of "Torchy Blaine" movies, a B series from Warner Brothers in the 1930s starring Glenda Farrell as spunky, streetwise gal reporter Teresa "Torchy" Blaine. I've never seen any of them, so they'll be a good 8 or so hours' worth of watching when I get to them.

Tomorrow at either 10 or 10.30 (I was too rushed this morning to check), TCM will be showing Swing Shift Maisie from 1943, the seventh of ten of Ann Sothern's "Maisie" movies. This time, she works at an aircraft plant and, of course, gets caught up in romance and espionage, all to wind up with the man of her dreams at the end. I don't know if I'll like it, but since I've liked the last two I've seen, I suspect I'll like this one, as well.

For some reason, I can't access the trailer, but here's a still from the movie, with co-star James Craig:

I hate that term 'hacked'. It is so non-specific. What probably happened was through repeated attempts, using easily availability information, they guessed the password.

I wish Amazon would tighten up their procedures so that any incorrect attempt caused notification to user. This is what my bank does, and I appreciate that level of distrust.

I had a number of drug using employees in a time of full employment where employees were tough to find. One heroin user - didn't find that fact out until the police let me know they had him.

A 'good' employee might last three to five years. The drug users - maybe a year. They'd walk away from a $200, 000 piece of equipment and cause a couple thousand dollars of damage, and have no more concern than stepping on an ant.

YMMV. But the voice of experience is shouting in your ear.

If you have to pay more for drug-free, pay it. Unless you enjoy social experiments that bite you in the ass and wallet.

Torn on this. Yes resources could be better deployed elsewhere. Yes there are seriously bad guys that need to be busted.

There is an element of politics - if the "Trump loves Assange" meme can be crushed on the left, it reduces even further the stupid 'Russian Coloooosyun' Congressional time-wasting excuse. It also supports his law and order cred.

Even bigger though is this - who is passing info to Assange?

178 152 How is it that Vermont, that has a reputation as such a quaint, down to earth place...can produce some of the biggest a-holes in politics?

Proximity and easy access from northern New Jersey, New York City and Connecticut. Huge amount of money flows up here for weekend places and often people end up staying longer than the weekend. Except for Leahy the other a-holes you mention are not from here, in fact most residents of this state (including me) are not from here.

Add to that moonbat colleges like Middlebury, Bennington, UVM, Goddard and the now defunct (courtesy of Bernie's wife) Burlington college which all bring in a huge number of like minded travelers.

Because, like New Hampshire, New Yorkers and Massholes have moved there over the decades to find lower taxes and cheap land (in the case of Vermont, lakeside Bernie dachas) and have brought their insidious politics with them.

The fight isn't over - it never will be. This is when the hoplophobes and the power hungry will sit back, consolidate, and get ready for another push.

As for the Left and LIVs, well we had some fringe Lefties talk about arming themselves for resisting Trump. So the base purpose of the 2A isn't lost on quite a few Lefties.

I agree with Gnu - in the way of Sandy Hook, despite a full court press by the usual suspects, the rank and file American didn't see gun control as a useful or effective action. That can change rapidly though, so bringing up things like Venezuela are useful to keep the issues in the consciousness of the rank and file. It isn't going to persuade the rabid anti gunners, but they want gun control for reasons other than "safety."

Oh, certainly. The best way to convert a LIV anti gunner is to take him or her to the range. I had a friend who wasn't rabid but took the lefty antigun talking points as accepted wisdom.

I took her to the range and set her up with a Glock 17 and bowling pins. She thought it would be easy to shoot, no worries. She was wrong. Came away with the attitude that pistol craft really isn't that easy and isn't at all like she saw on TV or heard from Dianne Feinstein. Opened her eyes.

Hyperloops sound pretty cool (but probably have the same right-of-way problems as railroads and cable) but as others have pointed out, self-driving cars don't really work unless every car on the road is self-driving. And maybe that's their goal.

I think Dean has been that way forever, but when he first appeared on the scene he projected the image of being non-political. I'm ashamed to say i actually voted for him when he first ran for Lt. Governor.

Not generally known outside of this state, but after that election the popular Republican governor died suddenly, so Dean became governor. Next election the R's ran the deceased governor's wife who was also quite popular. Month or so before the election the wife had a massive stroke which would have killed most normal souls, and Dean cruised to victory. That is how he got his start.

Curious don't you think that Dean is a medical doctor, quite the run of bad luck for his opponents.

Culturally we're much closer to New York than MA. I'd suggest:

1. NY gets CT and VT
2. MA gets NH, RI and Maine south of Portland.
3. Wild bears get Maine north of Portland

415 I got a pedicure back in October, and the polish is still on my toes.

And, it is taking forever to get the stuff off. I think I'm gonna have to dremel it off.

So, anyway...I am not sure if that was the best pedicure ever, and worth every penny or if they scarred my nails for life.

Would you go back to that nail place?

417 Howard hasn't been Governor since 2003.

Lifelong Vermonter here, and the one really odd thing about Howard is that his hard turn to the left didn't happen until he left the office. As Governor he was widely loathed by the Progressives for calling them on the fiscal unreality of their BS ideas and fiscally siding with what passes for Republicans here in VT.

The Dean we saw on the national stage was/is nothing any of us had ever seen while just in VT. Either he hid it well over the 12 years he was Governor or he got switched for a doppleganger when he went national.

=======================

It sounds like you got a gel no-chip polish. There is a special solution to remove it. Regular nail polish remover won't touch it. Go back to the salon and they'll take it off.

419 A very fine rant, J.J.

Posted by: KT at April 21, 2017 10:04 AM (qahv/)

420 @418

No it wasn't gel for two reasons...

1) I never get gel on my toes, specifically for this reason. And I paid for a regular one.

2) And I specifically picked out the nail polish myself from the wall, and it was regular polish.

But, let me tell you....that pedicure lasted like 2 hours, so it wouldn't surprise me if they tattooed the stuff on my toes.

424 Sister and family live in Southern Vermont. Just north of Brattleboro. They are true Vermonters. The state is divided, once side true Vermonters and the other trust fund flat landers. True Vermonters are independent and community centric, neighbor helping neighbor. The other half suck the good and decent out of everything they touch.
