Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Fox News Now In the Hands of the Very Liberal James Murdoch, Who Plans a Major "Reinvention"These sources say James Murdoch’s long-time annoyance if not disgust with Fox News became cold fury after the Times' April 1 story [disclosing Bill O'Reilly's previous sexual harassment payouts ]-- even though several of the O’Reilly settlements had happened when James was CEO of the parent company. This was a similar reaction to what had followed the harassment suit by former anchor Gretchen Carlson against Fox News chief Roger Ailes in July. Every time Fox controversies spilled over into the wider world, James took it personally. "It was somehow against him," says one person close to the Murdochs. Fox News is a business he should not be in, he had told people before, despite its major contribution to 21st Century Fox's bottom line --20 percent of its profits came from Fox News last year, the biggest-earning division in the company. Presumably, he meant the in-your-face world of conservative cable news with its mega personalities. Indeed, James regarded many of the people at Fox News as thuggish Neanderthals and said he was embarrassed to be in the same company with them. But, likewise, it would be hard to imagine how James could have been regarded with more contempt by many of the people at Fox News. James was rather exhibit No. 1 of the liberal elite entitlement that Fox had so profitably programmed against. "Fox [News] is an important brand, but it needs to develop, and, to some extent, be reformed," James said when I interviewed him ten years ago in his office as the chief executive of the Murdoch-controlled Sky TV in Britain, whose significantly less-partisan news operation he extolled as a ratings and journalistic model.A couple of his ideas don't seem bad on a superficial level -- he wants Fox to be less overtly partisan, and he wants to merge Fox and Skynews and Murdoch's other media properties to create a global news brand. I think Fox's overt we're-on-your-side signalling limits its reach. Preaching to the converted, as they say. But I also think Liberals Gonna Liberal. Maybe it's just me but I haven't perceived Fox News as being actually conservative in their news or programming for many years now.
Sure, they had a few prime-time blowhards that seem less liberal, O'Reilly being the perfect example, but delivery style and actual conservatism are two different things. When he moderated his tone for a couple of years just to get the coveted Obama interview, that was it for me. The news division has been sliding leftward for over a decade, since Shep wasn't reprimanded for his girly fit on the bridge in Nawlins during the flood. Even at the beginning they were only balanced, which made them a rarity in the generally overtly biased press. And it made them hated by the left if for no other reason than conservative flocked to it in droves. That was the beauty of Fox at the beginning. It served a very neglected market and captured it completely. They have been moving quietly toward the left in an effort to "grow market" ever since. Which brings them to the present, with a new leader determined to make the mistake of all of America's newspapers, to wit; Move to the left so far you lose your moderate and right readers, and when you try to win them back (and you can't) your core left audience hates you too. Except in Fox's case, they've been made the focus of the lefts hatred for so long, they will never gain traction with that crowd. Not even if they hire Olberrman and Madcow. The left has too much invested in Faux News as an object of hate to want anything but its death. So all young Murdoch can do is lose audience. He'll make a small fortune from Fox. But he'll have to start with a large one, as they say. Posted by: OneEyedJack at April 21, 2017 02:13 PM (z79tQ) 91
Bias isn't what you report, it's what you don't. I don't believe it's even possible to report the news in a non-partisan way, just because there aren't enough hours in the day to present both sides.
I'd much rather a news channel was blatantly partisan than "unbiased". Posted by: Chupacabra at April 21, 2017 02:13 PM (rNxNN) 92

This "he wants
Fox to be less overtly partisan" Is a terrible idea. It is a terrible idea because a) fox is not terribly partisan toward conservatism except when you compare them to the other networks who b) display liberal bias all the time on every story. The difference is, the other networks refuse to admit their bias and even as they do everything in their power to suppress non-liberal points of view. Making Fox just another liberal mouthpiece will likely put Fox out of business and will harm the ability of anyone who is not in liberal lockstep to reach the public on TV. Twenty years ago, building a media empire through consolidation and mergers would be a fantastic idea, even at the expense of the brand with the most hardcore.
In the modern era, it's idiocy. Not only has James Murdoch decided to screw his most fanatic customers against all sense of modern service operations, but he does that after his beliefs were repudiated by the American electorate that makes up so much of his potential customer base. Even if the Murdochs got 100% control of Sky, which is where this PR blitz is coming from, market share doesn't matter if you burn down your profits. Just ask Boeing. This might actually have worked under a President Hillary, who would have real incentive to put the FCC against any competitors? Now? It's practically an extended ad for Breitbart News. Combine CRTV and OAN and form a new network. Work it out so everything is on cable but you can get a monthly subscription for extra goodies. (But legit goodies, not just hey here's this extra 2 minute clip. Let me watch shows anytime anywhere on any device. Tag all stories so I can easily search with keywords when doing research.) I'd give it two months before whatever this new network was called led all cable news and the former Fox News was forgotten. Posted by: What's a Seawolf? at April 21, 2017 02:23 PM (72PAC) 146

This reorientation has been proceeding for years. FOXNews clamped on to the "conservative" audience to differentiate their product and to grab an underserved market. They then added FBN and let it get a following as FOXNews served as profit center. FBN has kept to the "right" as it matured while FOXNews recentered by going "left". FOXNews will continue moving left because FOX Corp thinks it has an outlet for each constituency now: FOXNews for the mainstream and FBN for the "right".

SKY is ok. Their coverage of US stories is skewed toward the Narrative though. But they have less punditry. They have a diverse roundtable show and every night their is a rundown of the front page news articles from the various UK papers and they'll have 2 journalists, usually a Leftie and a moderate to discuss it. 165 FOX isn't "conservative"--except for Hannity, who is NOT a "journalist." The problem is that the rest of the media is so over the top with their liberal bias that after a steady diet of CNNMBDCBSABC and local news, even a non-ideological viewer will come away with the impression that FOX is indeed conservative.
FOX really does try to be , well, "fair and balanced." Posted by: JoeF One of the main things they teach in all journalism schools is this: There is no such thing as "impartial" or "unbiased" news. EVERYTHING has a vantage-point, a slant, a "cultural frame," whether they realize it or not. Therefore, do not strive to be "even-handed" -- because you can't be even-handed, no matter how hard you try. Instead, consciously choose your frame, your narrative, you slant, your bias. If you're going to impart your viewpoint into the news, then at least do so consciously. Oh, and by the way: The bias you choose will be left-wing, capiche? Or you get an "F." Moving right along -- one you've chosen your "side," you must then PRETEND that you and only you are being "impartial," while everyone else is being biased. By using this technique, you get your message across more effectively, by discrediting the opposition, and positioning your self as neutral. Class dismissed. I carry no brief for Glenn "soccer balls and teddy bears" Beck, but he honestly did try to wedge open the door for a Fox competitor at The Blaze.
He had tough sledding, as exemplified by his constant entreaties to his radio audience to have them call up and "demand The Blaze!", because the system is thoroughly rigged, cartelized, and noncompetitive. Beck just couldn't convince cable to add them to the lineup. On top of his other problems, such as being a dry-drunk nut case. I suspect that the slow but apparently unstoppable move to "television" directly over the Internet, and cord-cutting, opens up previously closed doors. I also expect that big corporate ISPs are going to start to close those newly opened doors, or try to do so. ATT and Comcast are visibly moving in that direction. And I further expect that this Republican-controlled Clowngress will aggressively do the legislative bidding of the ISPs in that regard. As in fact they just did by passing a law to legalize your ISP collecting and monetizing your online activity history. Posted by: torquewrench at April 21, 2017 02:39 PM (qJjMA) 235

So they're gonna try to sell us overtly-Progressive programming as "unpartisan straight news" like every other televised news outlet. It won't work. They will lose more viewers than they gain. They will only create a vacuum for a conservative news station.
Every viewer of TV news -- and I mean EVERY GODDAMN VIEWER -- knows that every station has a bias. They just go along with this kabuki theater of pretending that the stations pushing their preferred bias are "unbiased straight news TRUTH BOMB CENTRAL". But no one really believes that. Looks like the left is gonna have a new hero on their hands -- this guy is definitely the new Tookie Williams!:
Fresno killing suspect shouts out during 1st court hearing FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - The suspect in this week's racially motivated shooting rampage in Fresno entered a cramped courtroom early Friday shouting that natural disasters striking America will increase. Kori Ali Muhammad, 39, then shouted twice during a brief hearing: "Let black people go" and a phrase similar to "in reparations" that was not clearly enunciated. He was charged Thursday with killing unarmed security guard Carl Williams at a Motel 6 a week earlier. Authorities have said Williams' killing was the first of four by Muhammad. Police have said he told them that learning he was wanted for the Williams' killing spurred him to try to kill as many white people as possible before he was caught. He shot three other white men at random Tuesday, police said, including a Pacific Gas & Electric worker sitting in a truck and two men who had come out of a Catholic Charities building. Muhammad fired 17 rounds in less than two minutes, police said. Officers with help from acoustic sensors posted in the area arrested him less than five minutes after the rampage began. Fresno County Superior Court Judge W. Kent Hamlin assigned a doctor to examine Muhammad's mental state. The judge set bail at $2.6 million. Muhammad said Williams showed him disrespect while Muhammad was visiting a woman at the motel, according to police. Posted by: zombie at April 21, 2017 02:53 PM (DQ4Fv) 326

Cruz has already said he doesn't want to be on the SC. Because he wants to be able to say what he thinks and being on the SC would limit his ability to hold forth on issues.
So I don't think he'll be heading to the SC. If he doesn't run again there's not much else he'll be able to do politically. Governor has been decided. Lt. Gov. is locked down too. Posted by: Skunky Choom at April 21, 2017 02:57 PM (WsRdn) 344

Conservatives complain that there's too much "fair and balanced" reporting and commentary on Fox News, because of the many liberals appearing, such as : Juan Williams, the late Alan Colmes, Dennis Kucinich, Evan Bayh, Bob Beckel, Kirsten Powers (now on CNN) , James Carville, Mara Liasson, Marie Harf, Rick Klein, Julie Pace, Chris Wallace, Pat Caddell, Jeff Zeleny, Karen Timulty, Shemp Smith, Doug Schoen, Charles Lane, Geraldo Rivera, Leslie Marshall.... Posted by: Jukin the Deplorable and Profoundly Unserious at April 21, 2017 02:50 PM (cOHS7) The world that FNC came into had a unique opportunity and Murdoch too it. Unfortunately, getting a new "conservative" cable news station going now has massive obstacles that would strangle it in its cradle. Cable companies have been merged and reduced in number to where it's Comcast and a few smaller fish. They're run by corporate leftists who would do everything possible to block their access to a new conservative network Even if they did get a channel which would be so far down the menu it would need years just to get past the "Wicker Furniture Crafts Channel". Then you have the SJW harassment campaigns against any and all advertisers who would dare to enable "HATE SPEECH". Again, the vast majority of CEOs who aren't leftists have no backbone to fight any "controversy" On the positive side though, Comcast will continue bleeding away subscribers who only keep paying their massive rates because of Fox News. That'll be a revenue loss to their other leftist propaganda channels like ESPN Posted by: kbdabear at April 21, 2017 03:13 PM (AOrEZ) 410

The problem for the left is they can't put the genie back in the bottle at this point. If FOX goes left like it likely to do now that there is a liberal in charge someone else will step up to the plate and take their market share. Now will that replacement be as big and as powerful as Fox News is now? My guess is not. My guess is that we will see several different smaller versions competing for this bit of market share and at the end of the day we might see several new channels make it to the profitability stage, much like CNN and its clones. As far as access to the cable market goes, hell Conservative States could get into the act and just tell cable companies they have to offer them as the price for doing business.
