Ace of Spades Pet Thread

sat pet thread.jpg

Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread, where critters are tops.

It's been quite a week with the pets here. All I can say is I'm glad that they don't have thumbs. Whats been going on in your world?

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Submitted by our friend & Moron, ibguy.

Meet Mark Ching, a good good guy.

Up until a couple of years ago, Mark Ching was a successful businessman who dedicated his free time and resources to rehabilitating abused dogs in Los Angeles and finding new homes for them. But then he heard about the horrors of the dog meat trade in China, and after witnessing them first hand he dedicated his life to rescuing as many canines as he could from dog slaughterhouses across Asia, even if it meant putting his own life at risk.

Firefighters save elderly dog. Wonder what kind of bill they will charge.

Not to be undone, a cat and its owner needed rescuing.

Keeping up with the Dogs is no way to go through life.

Cattle. Beaver. Quite the roundup.

Pets. Owners. Photos. Smile worthy.

Dog grooming 10 photos of before and after doggy haircuts.

Meet The PetMorons

gizmo.jpg

Our first PetMoron this week is Gizmo.

Gizmo lost one of her upper canines and sometimes her upper lip catches on the gum, producing a cool, one-sided Dirty Harry snarl. "Well, do ya, punk?" Notice how she drapes herself half-way up the armrest, which is wierd -- never had any other cat who does that. Must be comfy, I guess...

kodos.jpg

Of all the dogs we've owned, this is one of the ones we can feel proudest of. This is Smoke, who we fostered for many months.

Smoke came to us in the worst condition of any rescue we've taken in: malnourished, filthy, matted, swarming with fleas and red with eczema. He was unsocialized and so terrified of people that he hid under the bench at the vet's office. When he was being washed and cut down, part of his tail fell off. I'll spare you the "Before" picture.

Dogs live with us in trust. Better to have a millstone handed around the neck and be cast into the sea than betray that trust with abuse.

Kodos the Executioner

Quite the story. Thank you for sharing Kodos.

phresone.jpg

Here are two of my buddies (my rescue golden Sara was featured a few months ago)

The mid-sized fawn guy with the black muzzle in back is my bud Max. Max is a 9 year old mix that looks a lot like a Black Mouth Cur. DNA testing says he's relatively equal parts Italian Greyhound, Beagle, Border Collie and Australian Shepard. He does the classic baying at the base of the tree when he hunts squirrels and possum.

The little long hair chihuahua up front is Cookie. We took in Cookie last year from a friend who had rescued several large dogs, which caused Cookie to go into a shell. At 12 years old he was going great like a little pup until a few weeks ago when an undiagnosed tumor ruptured. RIP little guy.
phreshone

Sorry to hear about your buddy phreshone.

lily.jpg

Another story of a Moron with a big heart.

This is Lily-- a big girl with a big, big personality. I know persons who have less of it than her.
We learned of her through a newspaper article about a dog operated on for embedded choke collar. When I went to get her I found she was also missing a leg. I brought her home and she took over the day-to-day running of the house.
She passed away a few months ago. She had exceeded her expected life span by six years.
I'm floridacracker, an original Microsoft employee as documented by Ace of Spades, and an occasional Nancy Sinatra stand-in.

charles.jpg

Charles submitted the following about his "little" buddy.

Here is Ruger surveying his domain. Don't let his 19 lb size fool you, he is positive there is a 100 lb dog inside.

These are my buds... Sabine and Bianca. love your web site. - Robert

What a wonderful group of animal people we have here. You folks are wonderful. Thank you for the photos and tips.

Looks like the cat photos have dried up a bit. If you cat owners can herd them up we would take your photos

Own a cat? Have a dog? Want it to be on Pet Thread. Photos, tips, videos can be sent here to petmorons at gmail dot com.

Here is hoping you and your critters have a great week!!!

9 Great looking pets and stories.

Just submitted our application to adopt a sweet young cat/kitten from a foster organization.

He was saved from being euthanized, and is gorgeous with green/blue eyes and long gray tufts in his ears.

Fingers crossed we get him. Like our late Spanky, he drools when he's getting loved on.

Our little Sandy needs a new buddy, too.

They do, but only self-inflicted. Like when they exhibit catlike agility by gracefully leaping directly into a bannister and scrabbling wildly as they slide into a heap on the floor, then doing a little "I meant to do that" grooming. They know they're not fooling anyone.

22 The rest of Smoke's story.

He was put in a roomy wire crate in the breakfast area so Her Majesty and I would frequently pass him by. Because his problem was with men, I was the one to give him treats and his evening dinner of meat and buttermilk; we free-feed kibble.

During the day while we were away, the TV in the living room was turned on the Baseball Network so he could hear mostly male voices in a safe, comfortable environment. While he was put in the yard, I would sit and read. As time passed, he started coming up to me; a little undemonstrative affection told him we could be trusted.

When he sufficiently recovered, he was put in the kennel in a pen with Alan, an easy-going dog. There he enjoyed sunshine, clean water and all the good food he could eat until a forever home was found for him. There he lived out his life in the love and comfort every dog deserves.

A good boy, hard used, who found redemption. Rest well, Smoke.

I do not. If I'm lying on the couch and they flop down on my chest, I have no compunction about twisting their ears like I'm riding a motorcycle, though.

The synagogue I went to when I was little used to have a blessing of the animals "Days of Awwww" every year. Sounds cute, but there are about 40 animals in the multi-purpose room who don't like or know each other and really don't want to be there. We had a harness/leash for Callie to keep her from mauling dogs, but what to do with Sputnik? Put her in my sister's American Girls doll dress. Completely humiliated and immobilized cat, coming right up.

33 Pet Question for this group of experts:"

Conor came to us as a pup almost 5 years ago and joined a pack with two much older dogs, Mrs H and myself. The pack now consists of Conor and me, since last summer. Daughter H is trying to inveigle me into taking on a rescue (or at least a new pup) to keep Conor company since I am not at home all the time. For the time being, I'm thinking Conor seems to be doing fine, but he does love playing with other dogs when he gets a chance. What's the pet horde's non-scientific consensus on single dog households?
Discuss.

39 My daughter and her husband kept my dog for a few days right before Easter. He's been wanting a big dog, and he had a large time with my Cheyenne. Daughter is expecting my fifth grandbaby, like, any day now...so, what does her husband do but go out and get a puppy. A big puppy. In fact, the half brother of my dog. They pick him up May 13.
And then the real fun begins.

40 I was in Pet Smart the other day and they had a Russian blue female up for adoption. (I would have loved to take her, but six cats and two dogs currently)

I noticed that she was sleeping with a paw covering her face, just like my Jack does. I wonder if it's something common to Russian Blues. My Scottish Folds don't do that.

Posted by: Notsothoreau at April 22, 2017 03:22 PM (Lqy/e)

41 What's the pet horde's non-scientific consensus on single dog households?

A non-scientific answer is: it depends on the dog. Dogs are very social creatures and see us as their pack leader. At shows, some of ours can be left alone while we wander around and some pitch a fit unless they have a companion.

57 Pet Thread!

We've been baby-gating WeaselDog in the kitchen during the day, and having a dog walker come mid-day to visit. She's acted fine all along, and readily hops into her kitchen bed when we get ready to leave. The last couple of days when we have come home, she has been loose in the house after chewing a hole in the plastic baby-gate mesh. Guess she is tired of being in the kitchen.

58 Pet related:

Recently watched the film "The Voices." While not necessarily great cinema, it's a rather fun and lighthearted look at serious mental illness and serial killing.

Stars Ryan Reynolds. Features rather prominently a dog and a cat. And the delightful Anna Kendrick (meeeow!).

The questions left unanswered: Was the dog good? Was the cat bad? These are weighty matters that defy easy answers.

65 My big news from last weekend:

I had the grandkids overnights while new grandkid was in ICU. Son and expectant wife came down with their new puppy as well. You may recall my animadversions on children names -- they gave the silly name to the new puppy. Lab/border collie mix, of course cute as a button. So there is puppy trying to play tough with grandkid, but my old dog quietly and gently pushed the puppy away every time she got shirty. I was so darned proud of my old guy (he is 9 now) and how he was training the puppy in proper behavior. We took them all (including grandkids) to the park; and again my old guy stepped up to the plate and showed how to behave: sit, lay, fetch, give, drop. Puppy was going through her paces for the old man.

75 Since nobody bothered with the real (possibly) reason dogs turn around before lying down, the theory is the tribal memory.. Dogs developed in savanna grasslands and would rest in tall grass hiding. Turning around is wallowing the grass down to made a bed.

80 Re #35--experts. Don't know about being an expert--on anything--but I do have a relevant experience to relate. We wad 2 mini doxies for many years. When the older of the "girls", Dolly, passed on of heart failure at age 13, the survivor, Peaches, began a slow fade. She is a black tan
sweetheart, who will be 12 next month. In February we bought a mini-pin at about three months old, no papers but a beautiful specimen, also black tan. After having dachshunds for so long, we were not prepared for this ball of energy. But----as I hoped----She brought the doxie out of her funk. They are inseparable, running around the hard and arguing over toys that Peaches considers her private property. "Keah" says catch me if you can. (Not likely). A remarkable reversal of demeanor in the older dog.

75 Since nobody bothered with the real (possibly) reason dogs turn around before lying down, the theory is the tribal memory.. Dogs developed in savanna grasslands and would rest in tall grass hiding. Turning around is wallowing the grass down to made a bed.

But the other people were funnier than that.
