Rise of the KAF

A couple of weeks ago, I'm in the endodontist's office waiting to spend a crap ton of money on the first two, count 'em, two root canals, and as is usual these days, there's a TV set on in the background. At 7:30 in the morning, the last thing I want to do is watch TV. But I notice it's tuned to the Disney channel which is running some show that appears to be about teenagers, geared to a teenaged audience. I wasn't much paying attention until I noticed a basketball game going on. It appeared to be some kind of a one-on-one grudge match between two protagonists, one of which was some guy that looked like he was supposed to be an arrogant douchebag, and his opponent was a girl.

Naturally, the girl won.

The game consisted of a rapid-fire series of cuts that showed the girl making jump shots over the top of the douchebag, getting around him for an easy layup, smacking the ball out of his hands while he was dribbling, and making nothing-but-net 3-pointers. And then after the game, she trash talks him and stalks off the court in triumph, leaving him abject and humiliated.

I just get so tired of this.

If you want to have a high-school drama where an arrogant douchebag gets his come-uppance at the hands of a girl, fine. But this is just silly. Because in order not to offend the feminists, every movie and TV show now has to have a KAF (kick-ass female) either as a lead or as a major character, who can compete toe-to-toe with the most physically competitive men.

So now we're regularly regaled with ludicrous plot lines that have 5' 110 lb. teenaged girls beating the snot out of three 200 lb. men.

We laugh at those old 50s TV shows that showed married couples sleeping in separate beds. Ho ho ho, we laugh. They're trying to pretend sex doesn't exist. How puritanical. How silly. But I think the proliferation of these KAF characters is equally silly. In order to conform with the strictures of feminist ideology, we can't *bear* the truth that men can, generally, physically outperform women, and the competition isn't even close.

So we haven't become more "liberated", we just close our eyes to different things, in order not upset a different set of uptight, holier-than-thou prigs.

But then suddenly reality bites you on the butt:

In preparation for two upcoming friendlies against Russia, the U.S. women’s national (soccer) team played the FC Dallas U-15 boys academy team on Sunday and fell 5-2, according to FC Dallas’ official website.

But... but... how could this happen? Where are all the KAFs that we see on TV? Surely these scrawny teenaged boys should have been no match for the grrls and their awesome grrl power.

Next up, my other pet peeve from nonsense TV: the racially-integrated street gang. But that will be for another time.

Someone in the comments of the article was blubbering about "misogyny", and argued that the USWNT wasn't going "all out" to win. But others pointed out it scarcely would have mattered:

This is hardly surprising. My U14 boys teams (12 and 13 year olds) were faster and stronger than the U19 women's teams in our league, and we only played them a couple times because it seemed pointless beyond that. So now take a U15 team (14 year olds) against a women's team, and the boys are older, even faster and stronger than my 12 and 13 year olds -- what do you expect to happen? Doesn't matter if the USWNT was trying hard or not, they would have their hands full.

Which is one of the reasons why I think the progressives are pushing hard on the transgender issue. If the genders are confused, it is easier to hide the obvious truths of gender differences.

----------------------

And now for something completely different: An antifag goon getting his ass beat by a black Trump supporter wielding a large stick:

The soundtrack is unnecessary and annoying, so you can mute it and not miss anything.

Grrrrrl is now my daughter in law and was in the top ten in 3-point shooting percentage in her division in college hoops at the time. Never drove on him. Would just drill three pointers and smile very sweetly at him.

Posted by: Furious George at April 20, 2017 11:35 AM (j+dfT)

17 The problem with KAFs is that rarely does the story justify their kick-ass nature. No, it's just GRRL POWER!

I can live with a KAF character if there's a reasonable enough explanation for things. Raised as a child soldier by a half-crazy guerilla fighter. Being a psychic who's also been experimented on extensively by the government. That sort of thing.

(For those who are wondering, yes, those are the backstories for Jyn Erso in Rogue One, and River Tam in Firefly, respectively.)

The problem comes when you try to add the KAF merit to a female character whose background doesn't allow for it. Then it just looks ridiculous.

41 We laugh at those old 50s TV shows that showed married couples sleeping in separate beds. Ho ho ho, we laugh. They're trying to pretend sex doesn't exist. How puritanical. How silly.

What the left tries desperately to ignore is that that was the progressivism of the era. Improvement from above. Man must simply be offered all that is good and right be example, with all contrary or worrisome elements expunged. All the MST3k-bait societal improvement videos were cut from the same cloth as TED talks on privilege. The progs merely moved on to different hectoring grounds in their search for the perfect utopic area for improvement - the only change what they believed was the new Holy Grail, the key to perfection in man.

Then, it was vaguely traditionalist (but militantly Social Darwinist), and now it's Darwin-Lite with the nihilist strain of the beatnik in full wretched bloom. We aren't going to make anyone perfect, so let's redefine perfect now that we've "Nudged" society this far and *perfect* anyone who dares to disagree.

There are now infinite contradictory "truths" which are all True as long as they fit within Greater Truth, which is What Is Correct. It is Correct that women are just the same as men in all ways, so the Lesser Truth that the KAF is real and realistic is (despite being a lie) eminently Correct.

Anyone who challenges a Lesser Truth regardless of its falseness imperils Correctness, which is the very fundament of reality. Therefore, if you note that a lie is a lie, you are a crazy person.

Posted by: General Zod at April 20, 2017 11:41 AM (Bdeb0)

58 I've struggled with this for a while. I recognize on the one hand that the grrl power lead is not only a great way to get published and read (many people, not just girls, love the concept and want to read about KAF (love the term) protagonists), but its also something psychological about women.

I know I'm on shaky ground here so 'ettes, please help me out here. I have observed in my five decades of life that women seem much more inclined than men to take cues on behavior and build their life and self image around what other women around them are like. That is, men are more stubbornly independent and women more socially malleable.

So when women see weakness, timidity, gentleness, and emotional immaturity in women around them and in media, that's how they shape their lives. When they see courage, boldness, risk-taking, etc, that's more how they shape their lives. Now, there are hard-wired, created limits to how far any of us can go as a man or a woman; on average its a very rare woman who equals a man in boldness and adventure and a rare man who equals a woman in empathy and detail focus. But the tendencies can be shaped in women (and men, but that's another topic).

So the KAF helps girls get out of a shell of timidity and gentleness, which isn't all bad: the 1940s concept of femininity screaming at a mouse and hiding behind a man or fainting at the slightest trouble was kind of obnoxious. The roles were too polarized and excessive. I can see the value in exposing girls to role models who demonstrate strength and courage and reaching beyond their current situation to something more.

(more below).

It would be equally unbelievable for a scrawny guy to be doing the same things (without some sort of other explanation - psychic abilities or another hidden type of power) - Captain America doesn't kick ass as a sickly undersized youth, he does it as a perfect physical specimen after he gets transformed.

I wonder if this idea is somehow related to the seeming reality that women tend to use slogans and self-help posters in office spaces a whole lot more than men.

87 At the same time, I think that giving girls utterly unrealistic, ridiculous role models while telling them the whole time "you can be this" is damaging and harmful to girls. No, you can't be this. You aren't this.

It reminds me of a brand of Christianity which teaches the idea that you can be sinless and holy in this life, that you can through proper system and piety, live a sinless life. You know what this does to people? They either go crazy, lie to themselves constantly (downgrading sin to "error" etc), or quit the faith. Its a lie.

Telling people they can be something beyond their ability or reality and raising them on this myth is harmful and cruel. No Sally, I'm sorry, you can't beat the boys in all the boy stuff. They will humiliate and crush your dreams. There's a reason men and women don't compete in nearly every athletic competition on earth, including ones you wouldn't expect like Biathlon.

So you're setting your daughter up to failure and misery and humiliation, not giving her strength. Back when boys had rough, strong male role models, nobody told them they could BE superman or John Wayne They only showed them how such a man behaved, and left them as an example of what to aspire to.

Exactly. My late dad, God rest his soul, grew up watching the classic movies of the 30's and 40's and always maintained that those films had much stronger female characters than movies of today. Look at the characters Barbara Stanwyck, Jean Arthur, or Rosalind Russell tended to play.

There's a really good book called "Fast Talking Dames" on that subject.

So many of the female characters in film and other media are beyond irritating. The remake of "Beauty and the Beast" being a prime example.

118 My daughters played on a very good girl's team all the years they were growing up. They won state championships 4 years in a row. 3 of those years they had perfect seasons. They scrimmaged the local boys team, which some years only won a game or two all year. The girls would routinely beat the boys coming and going in the younger years. But by the time these kids were in middle school the boys team, which had no talent whatsoever, would routinely win short scrimmage games by 5 goals or more. That was with the boys laying well off so as not to trample the ladies. The girls would play as tough as they could and with all their considerable finesses and skill but they had no chance whatever. Scoring a goal on the guys was a major victory.

So, yeah, not surprised a bit.

But as far as television goes, it's always been unrealistic. How many years have we been subjected to the fantasy that a fairly bright tween could outsmart every and all adults in the vicinity?

Yes. For instance, Buffy of Vampire Slayer fame was a perfectly normal teen girl until the Slayer title devolved onto her and that spell or whatever took hold. Only then did she develop the super-strength and speed we saw in her vampire battles. Even then she had to practice to stay alive. And other human female characters were shown as normal humans, not KAFs.

If in your storytelling you have a justification -- technology, magic -- for the KAF, fine. Otherwise, hell no.

But they tend to segregate the villains to match them to the power level of the hero - Batman fights crazy people with stupid gimmicks like Scarecrow and The Penguin, not Darkseid and Doomsday. They joke about this in-universe a lot - there's an episode of the old Batman animated series where Clark Kent has to pretend to be Batman, and he's just mauling all of his normal rogues gallery to their complete disbelief.

When the Avengers end up facing Thanos, it won't be Black Widow or Hawkeye beating him, it'll be Thor and The Hulk.

Even in a fantasy setting you have a general structure of what makes people powerful. The female barbarian can beat on an orc with her bare hands if need be - the female wizard needs her spells.

198 Sure, the movie Hannah, she was some kind of freakish government experiment who'd been raised her entire life to fight to the death. I could buy that she was deadly and able to take out hordes of people.

But I won't buy the way regular girls in regular real life settings are portrayed, and I won't write that kind of book. Even in fantasy I prefer more of a grounding in reality. Little waif girl isn't going to box an orc and live. She'll use smarts, stealth, magic, ambush, traps, etc. Its how you use your abilities when you're in over your head that makes the story interesting, not so much how you crush everyone in your path without effort.

Hawkeye as a super hero is pretty terrible. In an era of firearms he is super accurate with...a bow. Make him a kick ass sniper though? That would be interesting....but lethal in a way the comic books mostly want to avoid.

But Black Widow is truly, truly terrible.

She's a great spy? I can buy that. She should be the one infiltrating the enemy via disguises and subterfuge to get information. Which is a hell of a valuable thing.

But the notion that a normal woman with a couple of stun sticks can go toe to toe with and advanced alien army or Asgardians is ludicrous.

Posted by: 18-1 at April 20, 2017 12:09 PM (eSx+E)

227 There's another more pernicious aspect to the KAF phenomenon: it leads retards such as Moldylocks to think that they compete against men physically.

Exactly, and it will lead to a crushing of someone's self understanding and worldview that a good parent and teacher should want to avoid. Don't teach your young people something that tries to defy reality; it always wins. Teach them something that allows them to excel and achieve within reality.

And that's the flaw with the KAF trope; not so much that its totally unrealistic (even though it is) but that it leads girls to think that's how to behave and is possible to become.

Old movies and books about heroic males were usually within the boundaries of human possibility (aside from stuff like Superman or Mike Hammer), but their character, their code of behavior, their ethics were taught to boys. You can't fly but you can be a good man who is strong to construct and defend rather than dominate and destroy.

What are KAFs teaching girls? That they're better than boys, not just that they can be strong.

273 One of the best things about The Walking Dead was that they avoided that whole KAF thing. Tough as shit and smart, but I can't think of one instance where Carol or Maggie took out a horde of geeks with nothing but a bo staff and judo chops. Very realistic in that respect. Even Michone, with the distinct advantage of a sword, never crossed that line.

But I stopped watching that show because I like the characters too much.

277 And these shows almost never show male strength, especially a white man, in a positive light. There always have to be damaged, or "magic negroed" or wise latinaed. The only positive white males are the geeky, faggy, beta males.

That's another aspect: the degradation of men. Look at Disney movies, the princess main character never goes for the masculine character. In fact, he's always the dunce, the brute, the bad guy, or just some side character that does her bidding. The boy she loves is almost always some wimpy singing pouf.

Or, as with later films, no guy at all. Just the heroic grrl beating everyone and triumphing to ultimate power.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 20, 2017 12:18 PM (39g3+)

278 Yes.

It's amusing--whenever the show saw "potential" Slayers, they were universally depicted as vulnerable and no more capable than normal people, with or without training. This became a plot point in the last season when they started getting targeted. The situation only changed when some magical handwaving "changed the rules" and immediately bumped ALL of them to full Slayer. Even then, most didn't fare so well...but they weren't very experienced, so that was to be expected.

So even Whedon understands the trope's limits, I guess.

284 My wife and I love soccer. So does my youngest son. Last women's World Cup, late in the knockout rounds where only the better teams are still playing, I told my wife any good high school boys team would beat any of these women. She thought I was crazy. Then the Australian women's team got thumped by a young boy's team. Then the FC Dallas boys beat our own top notch women's team.

The speed and skills just are not comparable. The women's players just cannot move the ball the way the boys do. Watch how many 30 to 40 yard passes the women even attempt.

I love watching and cheering for our women's national team. Just don't tell me the game is at all similar to the men's.

285 There was a "statistical" analysis in the 90's that argued, in seriousness as far as I could tell at the time, that the rapid improvements in women's performance in track and field were such that, if they continued on the same trajectory, would result in women outperforming men in like a decade.

Now, the statistical error they made was highlighted in a rebuttal showing that in a bit longer period of time, women would be outpacing the space shuttle.

And while that gets at the folly of the application of statistics in this instance, it fails to poke a hole in the laughable baseline premise.

It is not sexist to assert that female physiology will never produce specimens which outperform male physiology at the highest levels of whatever metric one chooses to measure. It's reality. Men will also never have babies. Also reality. Why this offends the sensibilities of anyone, anywhere is utterly inexplicable.

Well that's just it. Like in Necessary Roughness, you can imagine a girl kicker in football, women can really put power into those kicks. But the first time she takes a tackle, she's going to wake up in traction.

I could see a short relief female pitcher in the MLB, but I seriously doubt even as a reliever she could hold up to a full 162-game season. Men barely can.

As a culture, we have to walk that perspective between understanding men and women are, actually, different, and recognizing both are human and equal under law and in the eyes of God.

297 Exactly, and it will lead to a crushing of someone's self understanding and worldview that a good parent and teacher should want to avoid. Don't teach your young people something that tries to defy reality; it always wins. Teach them something that allows them to excel and achieve within reality.

And that's the flaw with the KAF trope; not so much that its totally unrealistic (even though it is) but that it leads girls to think that's how to behave and is possible to become.

What are KAFs teaching girls? That they're better than boys, not just that they can be strong.

I had a pet peeve with girls playing Little League. Grrrlll power and all that. OK, fine. Girls can be competitive in Little League.

But then open Pony and Colt Leagues to them, too, and let them see that once the testosterone kicks in, for the most part, they don't have a dog's chance. But at that point, girls have their own (softball) leagues.

I think that while it's worthwhile for girls' self-esteem to let them play when they're competitive, it's also worthwhile for them to see the reality that they're no longer competitive when boys' growth spurt starts.

I'll keep this short because my own Combatives background isn't enough to brag about anyway. But mass matters. Size, speed, strength.

Tiny, feminine girls cannot beat even average guys in a fight.

Martial arts helps but only to a point. An average female martial artist can defeat a below-average male. It takes an exceptional female martial artist to defeat a bog-normal male. And that's as far as the bell curve bends.

320 Makes you wonder if there is a discussion in the Petnagon about what the Chicoms and Russians would do to captured American female soldiers if we ever went to war.

I cannot remember the name of the movie but I watched one years ago where this came up. The setting was special forces training, and this exceptionally capable woman managed to make it onto the squad. The training took place on an island, and they had it all down: it was utterly brutal. They'd set up a scenario where the team was supposed to take out a target, but the actual events were that they'd get captured and then spend weeks being starved, beaten, psychologically tortured, and even some physical torture.

The purpose was to prepare the men for actual capture, and how to deal with it and escape. But here was this woman in the team, how to deal with that? The trainer decided the only way was to have her be raped, because that was essentially what the men were dealing with: being powerless and helpless and physically damaged.

It was hard to watch and eventually she managed to get free (because again, different rules, and they weren't sure how to deal with her), and get the guys out and they took out the trainer.

But I thought it was actually really smart writing and a great concept.

335 I shaved my legs once for the state finals in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Nobody taught me and I have hairy legs. It was an ordeal but I did have a slightly faster time. Don't know if it was from lack of leg hair resistance or not. It did feel funny in the pool.

336 And on the next breath they whine about the dearth of women in STEM subjects. So what became of the out-thinking then, huh?
=========
They actually kinda did.

You gonna take up a career in STEM--where they expect results?

Or get a cushy job in HR--where results are someone else's problem?

With the pay being roughly equal. And--due to the diversity laws--women are overwhelmingly favored to fill those HR positions.

Very strange feeling. My socks used to fall down afterwards.

I think that's true of your characters in general though. They seem to rely on experience and cunning rather than stand-and-fight. Your werewolf book was a departure because it followed so *many* characters so you couldn't showcase the abilities of any given one (in many ways I felt the story was more about the setting than the characters).

It's true. I remember riding my bike one day when color started appearing. At first it was red, and then slowly slowly the green began to appear. I was so shocked I rode off into a ditch. That's when I noticed the stars for the first time.

A wild experience I tell you.

344 You seriously have only now noticed how anti-male Disney is? Anti-male and, by extension, anti-family (as father is the head of said family).
Go re-watch Mary Poppins, and see what a grasping, rapacious, money-loving, pigeon-lady-hating old rascal Pater is. Or watch Steve Martin in the charming Disney modernization of "Cheaper By The Dozen" and see Dad's family fall to pieces under his leadership in about three weeks time.
Every Disney father is either sociopathically ambitious and eager to sacrifice his children for profits or an utter stumble-bumble dumbass incompetent mouth-breather who is kept alive solely through the love of his wife and kids.

345 We were having a push-up challenge where I work. Two of the people are on their late 20's. One is a young man, overweight, but not TOO overweight, not in prime shape but on the soft side of normal. The other a young woman who works out, yoga, eats health food, all that crap. The first day, doughboy kicked slendergirl's a$$. Surprise, surprise. (Uh, I'm being sarcastic there -- it was no surprise. But I think it illustrates the degree to which a young man can be soft and pudgy, and still much stronger than a young woman the same age, in great shape.)

346 Bobby Riggs was an atypical tennis player for his time, a street kid and a hustler. No surprise if he was playing games with gamblers, and threw the match against King. He first thrashed #1 ranked Margaret Court, which set up the big money against BJK where he lost. Classic hustle.

Around this time, Riggs was on an episode of the Odd Couple where he hustles Felix and Oscar in ping pong. He beats them both at the same time, upping the ante by using more outrageous paddles, IRRC a frying pan and then a fish.

353 About 25 years ago I had to coach Freshman boys basketball. We were bottom of the totem pole for gym space and often ended up having to come back up and practice late in the evenings.

The varsity girls coach asked me if we'd scrimmage against her girls in order to give them an opportunity to adjust to playing a faster paced more physical game than what they were used to. I agreed to do so because it allowed us some gym time right after school.

We did it for about three sessions and then I told her we were through. Her 17-18 year old girls couldn't stop a fast break to save their lives. I got tired of us scoring undefended layups on them. I think she was tired of playing against 15 year old boys who were sporting wood.

354 Actually, the USWNT deserves a lot of credit for this. They routinely prepare by playing boys teams. They do this BECAUSE of the advantages the boys have. After all, the USWNT is sort of by definition the very best women's team. Preparing by playing a women's college team or something would be pretty useless.

Most women's teams won't do this because they don't want to see headlines like this one. But the USWNT is less insecure and more self-aware than most. They KNOW the boys have physical advantages; that's why they play them.

Yeah, you gotta respect it. If they ever get to the point where they can beat a good varsity high school team, they could probably handle their real compitition. Makes me wonder if matches like this are the secret to their success.

I was newly divorced (1 year) and my ex had immediately left town with her boyfriend. I had all my daughters (3). Two had just started college and I was home with my 9th grader. 364 A similar trope is the "Kids Save the World!" story.

Kids discover a plot by the villain. Kids try to alert parents but parents are too busy and/or too stupid and besides you're just kids! Kids defeat adult villain. Lesson: Kids are smarter than adults, not to mention more brave and more resourceful.

365 Back in college, my buddy's girlfriend starts yammering about how girls are better athletes than boys. My buddy offers to race her -- she can run normally and he will run backward. She scoffs at the notion that he could beat her running backward. I try to explain to her that he played cornerback in high school, so of course he can outrun you backward or forward. She gives me a blank look, shakes her head, tells me it's impossible that he could beat her running backward.

They run the race. It was never close. She stormed off. Never saw her again.

I love the IDEA of DS but then they started getting annoyingly political (all liberals have is politics so they can't help but focus everything on it) fast so I barely made it through 1.5 episodes.

368 The USWNT coaches would never schedule a warmup game against an opponent the players would just slouch through. That defeats the whole purpose of the match.

Women's professional or national-level teams routinely play male HS or small-college teams. They win plenty of them, but the fact that the coaches schedule those matches tells you what the coaches think.

371 It's really not their fault, the TV has told them they can beat up big ugly, hairy guys, in high heels no less. This is why you're seeing videos of girls hitting first and then getting knocked the fuck out. It's entitlement meets expectations of badassery, and generally it doesn't go well for the ladies.

374 My father never dressed as a fairy princess. Whenever he was lying on the floor watching TV, we'd climb onto his back and eventually he'd pretend he was either a horse (in which case we usually got bucked off) or a bear (which sometimes sent us running to Mom because he could do a good bear growl and stare at us with his teeth showing). Good times.

I have brothers, no sisters, so I never thought women were physically stronger than men. However, my mom was a farm girl, so she and her sister were expected to do the same chores as the boys, even if it took them longer (like loading a hay wagon). I stacked firewood until my youngest brother got big enough to take over, and my dad taught me how to change a tire by hand, but it was just basic stuff like that.

The funny thing is that in college, a couple of guys commented about how strong I was because I carried cameras and other equipment for several blocks. Thirty pounds at most, so not a huge deal. However, one of my boyfriend's buddies challenged me to arm-wrestling at a party. I just laughed, but he kept at me until I did, and then the %*$ hurt me. I mean he really slammed my arm against the table, then acted like he won some huge contest.

That was kind of my whole introduction to the idea that "strong" girls were supposed to be able to take on men. It truly is stupid, and it's just as bad a misconception for boys as it is for girls. I work with teenagers and sometimes the boys don't realize that they can actually hurt me or their classmates when they're rough-housing with their friends on the sidewalks or in the building entrances. They have no concept that in just a couple months they've gotten a lot bigger and stronger.

375 I know this is so unPC that it's probably not shown anywhere anymore, but "Father Goose" is a great movie about the sexes. Cary Grant is a reluctant radio operator in WWII who ends up having to rescue a French teacher and her pupils when their island is overrun by the Japanese.

It has several funny scenes, but my favorite is when she slaps him and he slaps her back... and she slaps him... and he slaps her back... And it cuts away to a scene of the radio receiver hearing that they want a minister to perform their wedding ceremony over the radio.
