The Morning Report 4/18/17

Doolittle.jpg

Richard E. Cole, 101, Last Surviving Member of the Doolittle Raiders

Good morning, kids. With two more US carriers steaming towards the Korean Peninsula, there's going to be a showdown. I don't think Fat Boy is going to back down and President Trump has shown himself to be the complete opposite of his predecessor when it comes to following through (both in golf and foreign policy). And up front I have chosen to mark the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo. Look how far we have come and yet how far we have fallen in that time. We skewer and deride the younger generations and yet the finest among them are dropping MOABs in Afghanistan and 75 years to the day off the coast of a hostile Asian enemy that would wipe America off the map if it had the chance. Plus ca change. Anyway, links from around the world, across the nation and up your street. Have a better one and remain blessed.

Up Front:
Why the Doolittle Raid Still Matters 75 Years On

28 I know I am shallow but watching old movies humanize the greatest generation in my mind. In the old movies you realize they also had PTSD, wives they left behind and missed, jobs they had to find when they returned, etc. watching old movies makes it clear that the greatest generation includes the women as well as the men. Actually, since I live in Michigan, I was aware of how important the women were in the war, as they built almost all of the planes at an airport called Willow Run, but old movies show a different side.

40 The Georgia 6 special election doesn't mean a lot in the long run. It won't affect the make-up of the House. The seat will probably revert to red in 2018. It will make the lefties feel good for maybe a day. But the next day, Donald Trump will still be president, the House and Senate will still be under Republican control, and Neil Gorsuch will still be on the Supreme Court.

The Democrats will have spent a fortune for a high that will be over in a day. That's the nature of addiction. It takes ever more expenditure to achieve an ever-diminishing result.

45 Portland Risks Millions by Banning City Investments in Corporations

If the city deliberately throws away money like this, who's going to buy their bonds? I can just imagine bondholders pounding their heads against the table. If they really want to hurt corporations, they should do some deregulation to create a more friendly climate for small businesses. They could even give them loans using the profits they get from corporate investments. That would be using the corporation's money against them (kind of the reverse of what corporations do to us: using the money we pay them in order to support liberal causes).

49 I agree that the GA special election doesn't mean much, but the feckless GOPe better get some feck and start strategerizing now to avoid a bloodbath in the off-year elections.

But the GOPe gonna GOPe. They told us they needed the House to get anything done...we gave it to them. Then they needed the Senate too, and we gave it to them. Then it was, we can't do anything without the House, the Senate and the Presidency. Next they'll blame their complete inability to actually do anything on not having a super-majority.

So, in the long run, losing the House wouldn't mean much, I guess.

Strangely enough, the Dems manage to push through their agenda no matter what amount of power they hold.

59 North Korean story:

Once there was a man who went fishing, and, as luck would have it, actually caught a fish He took the fish back to his wife with joy.
"Woman," he cried, "I have caught a fish! Let's cook it with rice!"
His wife replied, "we don't have any rice."
Well," said the man, "Let's fry it in oil."
"We don't have any oil, either. Nor a pan."
"Well, let's roast it over the fire, at least!"
"We don't have any fuel for a fire!"
In frustration the man took the fish and threw it back into the water. The fish raised its head out of the water and cried, "Long live Kim Jung Un!"

Got some bad personal news yesterday which I won't go into (it's not about me, but about someone dear to me). I'd appreciate prayers and good thoughts sent their way for health and healing.

Today is the birthday of silent actress Dorothy Revier. In many of her films she played a femme fatale and you can see why:

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu participated Tuesday in Mimouna celebrations in Dimona and attacked the publication of an article by arch-terrorist Marwan Barghouti in the New York Times.

The newspaper omitted to mention the fact that Barghouti is a terrorist and murderer, who led a terror organization responsible for the deaths of many Israelis. Instead it described him as a a Palestinian leader and parliamentarian. Only after an uproar broke out the newspaper published a tepid clarification in which it stated that This article explained the writers prison sentence but neglected to provide sufficient context by stating the offenses of which he was convicted. They were five counts of murder and membership in a terrorist organization. Mr. Barghouti declined to offer a defense at his trial and refused to recognize the Israeli courts jurisdiction and legitimacy.

Netanyahu stated that I read the article in the New York Times Sunday which presented arch-terrorist Barghouti as a leader and parliamentarian. The newspaper only retracted after we objected to this characterization, said Netanyahu and added calling Barghouti a political leader is like calling Assad a pediatrician.'These are murderers, these are terrorists and we have not lost our conviction that we are on the right side, the moral side and they are on the wrong side, the immoral side.

115 I guess there's some political punch behind drug testing welfare recipients, and I don't think I care all that much either way.

However.. unless I'm mistaken, most welfare dollars these days go to old folks in nursing homes. Or more accurately, go to the Nursing Home Industrial Complex, in all its works.

In fact, if you look at all the people receiving disability benefits (including, sorry to say, Veterans), a large chunk of those dollars go from the government (which doesn't really have any money), to the disabled person, to drug companies... both legal and illegal.

I wonder if there would even be an illegal narcotic system in this country if it wasn't for disability checks. Sad to say, but it's true.

Turtle was supposed to have lent the sword that fended off Chinese invasions for 500 years. Kind of an Arthurian turtle. And, autopsy revealed the turtle was, at least, old enough to qualify for its (her, as it turned out) mythic role.

If it had the twin rudders, it was a B-25. There were a number of medium bombers fielded back then (A-20 Havoc, A-26/B-26 Invader, B-26 Marauder). But only the '25 had the twin tail.

There was a wanted ad up on one of the electronic billboards on my way into work that was for Loser McLoserton and I was all well he has been on the run long enough to get down here.

And, yes, the thing about substantial parts of the United States is that go about an hour, hour and a half from a city and you can walk into wilderness and never be seen again, intentionally or not.

I was traveling down to Wildwood, NJ one Memorial Day weekend and got caught in an epic 50+ mile long back up. This was late at night and I was stuck in the middle of the Pine Barrens. There were so many cars that the road looked lit up like the day. Walk five minutes off the road and into the woods to heed nature's call and you could just barely see the lights at all. It was intensely creepy.

That's not a party with a long-term future.

Recall: Abortion Barbie lost the Hispanic vote all over TX largely because of that issue.

Imagine what a national party--that calls itself pro-life--would do with that if they were more concerned with the issues of the voters rather than the issues of the corporations?

A couple of weeks ago a few Chinese "tourists" were going to several "World Heritage" sites in Japan -

and throwing oil on irreplaceable, ancient art.

I guess in an effort to show how much they love Japanese culture.

There is a long history (hundreds, thousands) of years of animosity among all three- Koreans hate the Chinese as well for their long history of imperialist aggression, Japanese hate the Chinese for their long history of imperialist aggression against Japan, etc, etc, etc.

WWII was just the latest in a long line.

It wasn't Smurfland with everything all smurfy until Japan decided to be unsmurfy.

China now has the whiphand and look what's happening- good olde-fashioned Chinese imperialistic aggression. Most unsmurfy.

227 It's rather surprising how few Americans have taken the time to understand GB's parliamentary system.

Basically, when there's an election, people vote for parties, not candidates. Those people elected form Parliament, and they do not have to call an election for 5 years (but they CAN call one sooner if they wish) Parliament chooses a Prime Minister, who functions much as our President does (although no one votes for the PM except the members of her district and Parliament)

IF the PM wishes, then the PM can call an election before the 5 years is up. A PM will generally do this when the PM thinks that his/her political strength is at a peak and the opportunity is there to knock out a bunch of political opponents in the Parliament.

So, this is what is going on. She's saying it is about Brexit because suddenly that position is popular in the polls, but that's not what its about. American reporters are taking her statements at face value because they are lazy and stupid and couldn't care less about the real reasons these things happen.

Trying to do it from the east would be nuts, as opposed to say, Montana, where you can walk across. The St. Lawrence Seaway makes crossover points a little scarcer.

Flags were at half staff yesterday in Wisconsin, in honor of State Trooper Anthony Borostowski. He served three tours in Iraq, one of them alongside my son. In fact, he and my son and a bunch of their Army buddies spent a month together in Thailand between deployments. He was killed in a car crash while on duty. I'm glad Gov. Walker honored him by lowering the flag.

I think he just said I've killed 14 people and you're 15 which had the impression of 14 that day but what if it's not?

You can get to a lot of cities in a fairly easy drive from Cleveland. Head up to Erie, shoot someone, leave. Rinse lather and repeat for Toledo and Columbus and Cincinnati and Louisville.

If you chose victims, even random ones, that skew to a younger, more criminally inclined population, the killing will be lost in the noise. Just another random gang bang drug murder, too bad so sad.

Spread it out, use a couple of different guns to hide ballistics and it wouldn't be that difficult to do.

Hell, go to Chicago and start slaughtering people with a ninja blade in the middle of the street and probably no one would notice.

Apparently the government (Un's father was still alive and running things at the time) let a camera crew wander around a bit. It was downright spooky. The way the Norks carried on about Kim was as if he was literally some kind of god. Hard to say if they actually believed the crap they spouted about him or if it was all done just out of fear. Either way, it was still very creepy to watch...

Of course, as one wag notes, the legislature should just adopt its usual solution and tax the bears. They'll leave CT on their own.

324 It's one gigantic...something. Not sure what, except that it's damned weird. Saw a documentary some years ago about NK, when the ORBIS DC-10 (flying eye hospital) paid a visit there.
