Five-State Manhunt and $50,000 Reward for Man Who Posted FaceBook Video of Him Murdering an Elderly Man, Apparently at Random

He did offer some kind of explanation, but it makes no sense to anyone who is sane.

Joy Lane, who dated Stephens for several years, said in a statement that Stephens is "a nice guy ... he is generous with everyone he knows. He was kind and loving to me and my children. This is a very difficult time for me and my family."

In the video he uploaded to Facebook, Stephens mentions Lane in the moments before the shooting, saying to the victim, "She's the reason why all this about to happen to you."

Who the hell knows what that could possibly mean. Joy Lane says she's "not sure" why the killer would have mentioned her; the perp's mother said that Stephens had mentioned being "angry" with his girlfriend shortly before the killing.

It took FaceBook three hours to take the murder video down, though I'm not sure I can fault them for that. Moderation is hard! Seriously, I can't imagine what it's like moderating millions and millions of accounts.

By the way, last week's crazed shooter was apprehended on Friday, avoiding the Easter shooting that law enforcement had feared.

It's easier if your a multi-billion-dollar company staffed 24/7, with constantly-monitered mailboxes that are being flooded with "OMG What the FUCK are you people sending out over the Internet???" messages.

That's all you need to know what it means. We all know what it's like to be angry and want to smash some (inanimate) object. This arises from the same impulse. So it's not insane, but it is evil.

OK ... then when was it ? And I'm completely serious as a heart attack here.

Because if the notion of "I Promise" was that solid - it would seem we could vest The Right People with Infinite Power. After all, they promise to do good with it.

The Founding Fathers seemed to not trust the good nature of men quite that much. Binding them with the chains of the Constitution, and all that.

Fine ... I AM picking a fight. If Society was smart enought to contrive a proper Oath ... and then find the Best People to be Trusted to Take It ... well Hell.

There'd be no limit to the good that could be done.

Some azzhole walked into a bar and started shooting. Hit 4 people, initial reports said 1 died, that was false. He then disappeared.
2 days later no one kkows who he is, why or where he is.

Great, this is just ca 12 miles form us and he's running around loose. I thi nk if he stops by the doggehs will keep him away.

Funny story. When I was a teenager I was at a friends house getting drunk during his parents 'adult party'. My brother blurted 'It's Black Sabbath, Father!'. He nodded and said 'Ah. Christian Rock.'

I think there are two primary problems with trusting those that are wiling to take an oath, the primary one is the easily corruptible nature of the human race, and the secondary one is that of the remote ruler never having to actually face or interact with the ruled, thus being essentially unaccountable for his actions.

There is a tertiary problem as well related to the homogeneity of the society. In a small town, I might vote for Mayor Dogg and realistically expect him to abide by his oath of office because he lives two blocks over, our kids go to the same school, I do business with him every few weeks, and we go to the same (or very similar churches).

Whereas in polyglot Megalopolus, I can only vote for some remote figure I've never met, who lives in a gated community miles away from my community, whose kids will never see the inside of a public school, who only does business with K-Street lobbyists and Foundation lawyers, and whose church affiliation (if one exists at all) is questionable. I'd be very optimistic if I felt I could count on him to take an oath seriously. Note I am not really proposing a religious test; but I am noting that I think common shared virtuous values make it easier to trust an official I am empowering with the levers of state. Since so few in public office have anything in common with my life or family, I have little reason to believe that most of them will take the constraints of an oath seriously.

Interesting. If he stays free much longer and they don't find the car, the best case scenario is that he's being harbored.

I am a firm believer in Browningism.

But my carry gun is a .357 Magnum.

Just speculating here, but maybe he was trying to join up with some ISIS-inspired gang, and they made a condition that he publicly commit a murder before they would accept him. Perhaps in the belief that such a provision would make it harder for their cell to be infiltrated by law enforcement.
