What do all of these items have in common? Rumor has it, they were all developed for Mondays.

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The media has zero integrity, zero intelligence, and no hard work. You're the opposition party. Not the Democratic Party. You're the opposition party. The media's the opposition party. Stephen Bannon

Quote II

Time is the scarcest resource and unless it is managed nothing else can be managed. Peter Drucker

Quote III

Yield to temptation. It may not pass your way again. Robert A. Heinlein

The score card DJT is facing at the moment: North Korea, Russia, Syria, Iran and ....?
Well now a major #NeverTrump publication wishes him to speak out against Venezuela. Silence is not an option.

The increasingly dystopian, socialist-led nation of Venezuela is again on fire. Rocked by social unrest that is being met with a violent response from police and pro-government forces, the regime of Nicholas Maduro is teetering. In tragedy, there is opportunity. President Donald Trump has been handed a chance to right one of the greatest injustices of Barack Obama’s presidency. By so far failing to speak out against Maduro’s brutal regime, however, Trump is repeating the mistakes of the past.

In the last week, five Venezuelans—including a 13-year-old child—have been killed either by police or by the few “protesters” demonstrating violently in support of the government. The turmoil has been ongoing for the last two weeks and follows the failure of a virtual coup by a government desperately clinging to power.

In an perfect world imperfect world Trump is damned if does and doesn't. WTF is he to say? "Quit acting like socialist slugs". What do the Neo-cons warmongers want, a red line in the sand?

Maybe the Pope should speak up.

Traditional men's jobs are fading away. Yet women's traditional jobs are increasing. Why more men will soon find themselves doing women's work.

Many fields that are traditionally dominated by women are set to expand in coming decades, while many jobs currently dominated by men are not. That's the result of new research published Wednesday by Jed Kolko, an economist at job search site Indeed, which shows that less-educated men may especially face challenges in the job market of the future.

Jobs in the United States are still strongly divided by gender. A little more than one-third of men and a little less than one-third of women work in fields that are at least 80 percent staffed by their gender, according to census data analyzed by Kolko.

Going to the grocery store there are a couple of rows of snacks. We take the potato chip forgranted. Japan has a shortage of potato chips.

Thanks to a series of typhoons that hit northern Japan last year, the potato crop was poor, which has led to a very big problem this year: potato chip scarcity.

Projects. Sometimes they go right. Sometimes they don't. Even grade school students get miffed when something doesn't go right.

So I’m watching this Rube Goldberg contraption. It’s the shizzle. It rifles through Newton’s wastebasket, looking for new Laws of Motion after the first three aren’t enough to get the job done. It uses hydraulics, and electromotive force, and combustion, and every darn thing they can lay their hands on in the modern snouthouse. If it’s available at the mall, it’s integrated into the action. The hammer blow to turn on the power strip and start the fan is inspired.

Then, after 6 full minutes of glorious time wasting, you introduce some sort of porcine progeny, a water balloon, and what sounds to my ear like an off-camera F-bomb, followed by a mumbled punchline that spoils the joke.

Do you have a break room where you work? Do you have a kitchen where you work? Do you have thieves? Who stole all the forks?

It happened again recently.

I made my way to the kitchen, opened the cutlery drawer, and ... nothing.

No forks, no spoons, no teaspoons. Once again, I ate my salad with a soup spoon - which was retrieved dirty from the dishwasher. (Yes, I washed it.)

Over protective parenting. Is the world more dangerous for kids than it used to be?

Is this the case? Are children today more likely to be assaulted, kidnapped, or killed than they were a few decades ago?

Today we’ll take a nuanced look into the surprising answers to these questions.

Are you a hard worker? Are you dependable? Are you honest? If you answered "YES" to all of these, you may not be cut out to be a gubmint employee.

"Las Vegas-based Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official used his government credit card to purchase a $14,799 gym membership.
A conservative advocacy group released documents purporting to show EPA contracting officer Kevin Broadnax bought a 37-year membership at Super Sport gym on April 11, 2017. Broadnax used his government charge card to pay for his nearly $15,000 membership.
The sheer amount of paperwork related to the transaction suggests that multiple EPA officials were aware of the purchase."

The ONT Musical Interlude

April 17, 1934, Born on this day, Don Kirshner, who launched the careers of Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Harry Nilsson, The Monkees and The Archies. He died on January 17, 2011. via thisdayinmusic.com

April 17, 2007, Bryan Ferry was forced to make an apology after praising Nazi iconography in a German magazine. Talking to Welt am Sonntag, he said the Nazis "knew how to put themselves in the limelight and present themselves...I'm talking about the films of Leni Riefenstahl and the buildings of Albert Speer and the mass marches and the flags. Just amazing - really beautiful." British MPs asked shoppers to think twice about shopping in Marks and Spencer asking for Ferry to be dropped as the face of the M&S Autograph menswear collection. Ferry said he was "deeply upset" by the publicity surrounding the interview. via thisdayinmusic.com

Do you have a child in college? A niece, a nephew perhaps a grandchild? Do you know of young adult headed to college? Pass this along to them, a rebuttal of the white privilege claim.

If you are a white student in college, you doubtless hear daily that white people are evil, the principal cause of everything wrong with the world. Whiteness is bad, white people are bad. We are to blame for everything.

If you believe this, you are being gamed. What you are being told is nonsense. If you have the intelligence and self-respect to think for yourself, ask:

“What have other races and ethnic groups accomplished in the world compared to what we white people have?”

Global Warming Climate change. Why people remain skeptical about climate change.

• I'm so old, I can remember that in 2008 Al Gore predicted that the Earth's ice caps would have melted by 2013 (don't the poles, four years later, still seem to be around (while the polar bear population seems to be thriving)?).

Canadians have reason to celebrate. Provinces agree to free trade.

So politicians from the regions and federal government were in a self-congratulatory mood after they signed a “Canadian Free-Trade Agreement” on April 7th. Brad Duguid, Ontario’s economy minister, who hosted the gathering, pronounced the deal “a major leap forward”. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business presented each of the ministers with its Golden Scissors Award for cutting red tape.

When you have the chance to eliminate an enemy at no cost you should take it (cue Clinton letting Osama bin Laden go) but frankly America has been terrible at geopolitics since the 80s.

Which is kind of odd since California enacted the 'three strikes and you're out' law and crime went down. Then under Obama who released several hundred 'non-violent' convicted felons and murders went up.

Something of a mystery that people who don't obey the law commit more crimes. Of course, it isn't their fault as they are being oppressed by the white patriarchy who use the law to keep poor people poor. Which is understandable since we see how the progressives use the law and the courts to crush their political opponents.

I guess it becomes a matter of which gang you join.

And that is why I do not particpate in Facebook. Life is too short to be obsessing over other people. I already compare myself (unfavorably) to other people. I don't need to do it more.

Also.. I don't know if the Facebook obsessed are smart enough to be worrying about their kid in jail, their insurance or anything else real. I suspect many are totally superficial and are more worried that they don't have the same things that everyone else has, so they need new car/ clothes/ job/ whatever, and need to do things that cost a lot of money to impress everyone on Facebook. Do we know that's a real Russian dating site picture?

If it is, maybe someone made her do it, so she got even by dressing like that. Perhaps she's really stunning, but does not want to be on that site at all, and decided to be "ironic" and such.

Or maybe she sent this picture to some creep in the US who her pervert Father is making her marry.

Or maybe she's a model and auditioning for a part in a horror movie; it does have a Carrie feel to it.

/so many questions...

340 My big excitement for today: I "fixed" the driver board for a cheap Chinese-made LED fluorescent tube replacement. The owner of the hotel in town handed it to me and asked if I could do anything with it. Lamp is rated at 18 watts.

So I took the LED strip, minus the driver board, and hooked it up to my variable DC power supply. At about 60 volts, the LEDs kicked in, dimly, and at about 75 volts, they were drawing their rated 18 watts of power, and were brilliantly lit. So I deduced the driver needed to output 75 volts.

The driver is pretty simple; just a full-wave bridge rectifier with a capacitor to filter the resulting DC. Positive rail goes right to the lamp strip, negative rail is mediated by a tiny 8-pin surface-mount IC. That IC gets a read on output voltage via a voltage divider, and has a capacitor across one pair of terminals, and a resistor across another pair. Seems to be a PWM circuit of some kind. As found, it was putting out 33 volts, not enough to light the LED strip. Tried replacing a small capacitor across the lamp terminals, thinking it might be shorted. No result. The capacitor directly connected to the IC was 2.2 uF rated at 50 volts. I bridged another similar cap across that one while the circuit was powered up, and bingo!, the lamp came on full brightness. So I replaced the 2.2 cap with another of equal value, and the driver works like new. I guess the old cap had gone open, or lost most of its value.

Took the lamp back to Yung, and he was pretty amazed when I plugged it in and it lit up. Turns out he worked for LG electronics in Korea for 15 years and knows his shit.

Well, I got lucky there. The one part on that little board I couldn't test was the IC chip, because it's essentially a black box to me, and tiny, to boot. But a bad cap, I could find, and fix.

I puzzled out the circuit diagram, and it bears a strong resemblance to this one that I found on line, not exactly the same, but pretty clearly using the same principal of operation. I expect the exact circuit of the Chinese driver is proprietary, and uses a custom IC:

http://dev.emcelettronica.com/cheap-high-current-led-driver

I was thinking of lighting my shop building with a slew of these LED tubes made to replace T8 fluorescent lamps. Having some second thoughts. The little driver boards seem to be really cheaply made, and clearly subject to failure. I might be better off just mounting the LED strips, without drivers, and then just powering the whole lot from a purpose-built 75 volt DC supply. I could put a one-amp fuse on every LED strip to protect the power supply from a shorted "lamp".

Nice work.

I replaced the laundry room fluorescents with Feit brand LEDs and they worked great; instant full brightness, no flicker, etc. I got another set for the basement pantry/dry stores room, and one wouldn't come on at all, the other was like a fluorescent with a bad ballast. Swapping them in/out with the known-good fixture and tubes indicated that they were both bad, and after an exchange, their replacements work just fine. Nice harsh white, like I like in work/storage areas.

I can't speak to how they work outside, but if you get a decent set, they should do better than fluorescents in cold weather, yeah?

366 I understand Trump not saying much about Venezuela. First, talk without action - what good is that? That's what Obama specialized in. And talk will create some kind of expectation that we can do something, when it's already too late. There's nothing we can do, Venezuela is going to burn, and many, many people will die, and it will be decades before they even get any semblance of a civil society back there after this goes down.

There's no upside, there's only downside. This is what happens when the left takes over.

The purpose of some lives, and some nations, is simply to serve as an example to others. When that happens, all you can do is stand back and watch it burn.

LEDs like cool temperatures. In my reading this evening, I learned there are now a number of "plug and play" LED replacements for T8 fluorescent lamps, and a big market for them is to replace fluorescents in grocery store coolers and freezers.

My shop is currently "lit" by four eight-foot high-output fluorescents that will start at -30C. Such lamps are commonly used in signs, and for outdoor lighting here in Canada. But less efficient than your normal F40CW.

Posted by: lousagirl at April 18, 2017 02:01 AM (9plvG)

Well, I understand that the traffic used to go across the dam itself. In fact, I think I did cross Hoover Dam in 1988 on a day trip while at an event in Las Vegas, and I think we drove through Boulder City to do it. Undoubtedly, Harry Reid bought up the land that would make the likely route for a highway route to bypass Boulder City, and simply sat on it, to let its value rise as the town became more and more tired of the traffic.

So build Interstate 11 like I suggested above. Highway 93 will still carry the Phoenix-Vegas traffic load, but all traffic from points north will use I-11, and reduce the overall traffic load by a substantial amount.

Which is exactly Trump might be persuaded to build I-11. By so doing, he can throw a big fuck into Clark County, and Harry Reid in particular. A whole lot less traffic through Vegas and the Nevada portion of I-15, including the casino town of Mesquite, which is also a part of Clark County. Just this year, they instituted a 12.5% hotel room tax. Fuckers. No more staying in Mesquite for this cowboy.

I don't know if traffic patterns changed, or what. I do remember that I wanted to tow a trailer to Glendale, AZ, in 2010, and was told that trucks and trailers were not allowed to cross the dam since 9/11, in fear that a truck bomb might be deployed on the dam, I guess. 490 Oh it's so late, and I've been up reading and drinking and I should have been in bed hours ago, but I just watched the Dr. Who episode The Angels Take Manhattan, and Amy's decision to cast it all away-the mystery, the adventure, the sheer joy of traveling through time and space with the Doctor-so she could live out her life with her husband, as it should be, is breathtaking in its beauty. I'd make that choice to be with my wife, I'd make it in a heartbeat.

I suppose I'm a lucky man, and I suppose I'm drunker than I thought to post this. So be it, this post will be a mystery to all but Whovians.

496 'Morning, Horde.

Nice, friendly ONT, Mis Hum. Thank you. 'Specially enjoyed the music.

Speaking
of which, I went up to Kansas on Saturday to hear teej's band play.
teej was worried that they wouldn't live up to expectations. He tried
to lower the bar by describing himself as a "hack".

Well let me
tell you, the "hack" played drums, guitar and harmonica. The next time
he tries to tell you he's a rank amateur don't believe him.

497 Are children today more likely to be assaulted, kidnapped, or killed than they were a few decades ago?

Let me put it this way. Since retiring, I've been spending more of my time on my favorite hobbies.

501 Not much happening this am, or at least news that's a day old. I see Liz Warrens book is out, got an ad for it this morning. "Saving the middle class" or something. 20% off a BN...wait a month, and that will double.

No WW3 yet...Pence has assured SK of our support, whats new about that?

503 One of the publishing houses lost their shirt on Hillz' last book. Do they never learn? Or is there, as I suspect, some money changing hands under the table? There has to be some reason a supposedly savvy publisher would bite on these self-serving pieces of political correctness.

504 Mornin'

I see the left-wing fever swamps are all shrieking in unison about the Fake News that ZOMG TRUMP SIGNED A KID'S HAT AND THREW IT INTO THE CROWD-IMPEACH HIM!!!!!!1!eleventy!!!!

505 Chicago Tribune: buyers remorse in Trump, he is a failure already in the first 100 days.

"But at bottom, this all originates with the increasingly undeniable
reality that much of what he campaigned on was based on one sort of lie
or another."

If only Hillary had won, love, joy, and greatness would be sweeping the land.

506 Creeper, those book deals have been FEC loopholes for years. I think Jim Wright showed the way.

Posted by: Jean at April 18, 2017 06:03 AM (M6/J7)

507 Ahh...'morning, Jean. Thanks for the explanation. But doesn't it still cost the publisher to print the run? Still not sure how the publisher makes out unless the campaign kicks in a hefty bribe. Is that what you meant when you referred to "FEC loopholes"?

Posted by: creeper, doing the Witopia crawl at April 18, 2017 06:06 AM (voYu7)

508 I was shocked, shocked to see the Clinton foundation charitable donations dry up after Nov 8th. By Jove it's as if they expect something in return. Her book deals will be the same.

512 Is there anything "illegal" about somebody just buying a shit-pot of Hillary's suck-ass book and putting them in a warehouse, destroying them, etc... etc... ?

And by "anybody" - I guess I'm thinking someone who had done very well in currency trading.

Posted by: ScoggDog at April 18, 2017 06:12 AM (fiGNd)

513 I'll take your word for it, Jean. Never have been able to figure out how to make losing money work for me.

Although the health care system seems to have it figured out.

514 For those who may be inclined-

One of my employees called in this am to say he wouldn't be at work. He was driving in when some guy standing on the curb looked at him and then stepped out on the street. Brian hit the guy and when he called me he was crying. He said that the cops were there and he didn't know if the guy was alive or dead.

I don't know how I'd react and I hope I'll never have to find out. Brian is a good guy and could be in serious trouble.

A prayer for him would be appreciated.

I've heard of these ... but never seen one. My old man worked in two unions.

Doesn't mean it doesn't happen - just never happened to him. But who knows what his union's did with the dues.
