Gaslight

Holy crap, a Republican (Ron Estes) beat a Democrat (James Thompson) in a special election in Kansas' 4th congressional district, so you might think this would be a Republican victory, right?

Simpleton. You're wrong! It's actually a *loss* for the GOP. Who are you going to believe, the lying election results, or the New York Times? Ace reporter Nate Cohn explains it all for us:

On Tuesday, Republicans won an unexpectedly close race in Kansas’ Fourth Congressional District. The Republican Ron Estes won by seven points over James Thompson, even though President Trump won the district by 27 points in November. No Democrat holds a House seat as Republican as this one, so it’s startling that the seat was even competitive.

See, the GOP win is actually a loss because the results were 'unexpectedly close'.

The title of Cohn's piece is 'A Republican Wins in Kansas. It’s Still a Loss for the G.O.P.' It's a dog's breakfast of wishful thinking, hand-waving, and speculative "woulda coulda shoulda" tea-leaf reading that is really quite indicative of the quality journalism we've come to expect from the NY Times since Trump has been elected.

39 Obviously the MSM is going to spin everything as impending doom for the GOP, but at the same time that doesn't mean we put our heads in the sand.

I do think it's troubling that a comfortable 30 point district for Republicans in one of the reddest states ended up being a 5 point game.

I will say though for whatever reason, Republicans always do piss poor in special elections. I'm guessing it's mainly because the unions are always able to mobilize, but still, this was too close for comfort in Kansas.

Posted by: Maritime at April 13, 2017 11:43 AM (zcIrz)

40 The last election in this district re-elected a popular Republican incumbent. The candidate in this special election was closely tied to Sam Brownback, who is not particularly popular in Kansas right now. So the result is not hard to explain. If someone were to look up all the races where an incumbent was replaced by a new face and calculate the average drop in support, I am sure this result would be within one standard deviation of that mean.

103 Recall that Trump won "unexpectedly." Probably thanks to Podesta hiring a firm to identify how to misrepresent polling in Hillary's favor just enough to be credible (thanks, Wikileaks!) as well as news organizations tweaking their own polls.

Why should we care what reporters and tv talking heads tell us is expected anymore?
Posted by: Lizzy
__________

But this isn't polling, it's the actual election result.

But yes, the fact that Podesta was working the media polling was basically every conspiracy theory had been confirmed. It was to depress turnout and create the narrative the election had already been won by Hillary.

That's why I tend to think Trump will do way better in his reelection as not as many people will fall for it. I think a lot of Republicans had thrown in the towel way too early.

I think it could be a little of both. If you convince your opponent that theirs is a lost cause, you depress them (and, in election, that equals depressed voter turnout). Simultaneously you energize your own team. - Gaslighting (sort of).

But, at the same time, if you buy into your own propaganda (and I think you're right that at least some of them - maybe most - do), then it's wish-casting.

It's possible that between the author and the editor, both are occurring.

Posted by: Allen Goodner(Dedicated Tenther) at April 13, 2017 11:59 AM (h9QN9)

116 This is different than gaslighting I think. Remember how the democrats convinced themselves that Trump would pull every single Republican who was on the ballot in November down with him?

IDK.

To me, delusion, wish casting and gaslighting are all kind of the same thing.

Basically: people define a reality: "The Republican win is really a GOP loss." That makes no sense. Just like "Islam is a religion of peace." Idiotic.

However, the people making those statements expect YOU to agree with their reality, even though it is impossible and illogical.

Case in point: "Michelle Obama is the most beautiful woman in the world."

Shaping YOUR reality. You MUST agree. There is no argument, not counterpoint.

Sedgwick County has an Air Force base in the area and the Democrat use to be in the Army.

I can see that guy doing the full Jim Webb bullshit routine --running as a Conservative Dem Jacksonian Democrat--that cares about the debt!--and tricking people just like Webb faked and lied his ass off in Virginia.

Jim Webb-rarely stood up against Obama. Don't know of a single time.

As I said in an earlier thread, the DEMs lost KS-4 last Tues. they will lose specials in MT-at large & in SC also.

A new poll today over at Red Racing Horses (RRH--a respectable source) indicated they are likely to lose in GA-6, & that's the one where the DEMs have already committed $4 mill.

So in sum, by end of June, barring an upset in Tom Price's former GA district, the GOP will have won 4 specials in a row since Trump was sworn in.

Eventually, reality will steamroll gaslighting.

The national media makes the same moronic mistakes in LA with every election for the same reason. The electoral reality in modern LA Politics is this: statewide any dem will get clobbered about 60 to 40 or worse provided there's no bad blood between the various republican candidates and the Republican hasn't been severely bloodied in the primary. I'm betting it's the same in GA. So as long as both R's in GA have been focusing their fire on the dems and there's no bad blood, the dem should get smashed in the runoff.

184 A new poll today over at Red Racing Horses (RRH--a respectable source) indicated they are likely to lose in GA-6, & that's the one where the DEMs have already committed $4 mill.

So in sum, by end of June, barring an upset in Tom Price's former GA district, the GOP will have won 4 specials in a row since Trump was sworn in.

Eventually, reality will steamroll gaslighting.

The Old(er) Left, New Dealists and Great Society believers, Blue Dogs, Boll Weevils and Cowboy Democrats, of the Midwest, South, and West, were wrong, but they still loved America.

But I think a whole lot of people anymore have had the fun of having some pompous twat who thinks they are entitled to special treatment stealing time out of everyone else's day while they try to browbeat or con someone in service staff to give them special treatment.

Given that Dao was taped talking on his cell phone telling someone to get a lawsuit ready (because he was going to resist and cause force to be used against him) -Rush had this yesterday United has a good chance of winning IMO. Of course if the lawyer gets that squelched then it gets risky for United and corporate probably wants to offer 100K vs risk 5 million so they will only go to court if Dao and lawyer are overly greedy if offered a medium size settlement.

281 Given that Dao was taped talking on his cell phone telling someone to get a lawsuit ready (because he was going to resist and cause force to be used against him) -Rush had this yesterday United has a good chance of winning IMO. Of course if the lawyer gets that squelched then it gets risky for United and corporate probably wants to offer 100K vs risk 5 million so they will only go to court if Dao and lawyer are overly greedy if offered a medium size settlement.
Posted by: PaleRider at April 13, 2017 12:18 PM (8qFZP)

I too would like to see this weasel have to prove his case in civil court, and lose.

I bet beyond the settlement though would be United's fear that they end up getting crime of the century news coverage of what the media will continue to portray as the heroic elderly physician whom United had bludgeoned by way of the Chicago PD.

When the media is still being sympathetic to this ass, and your defense is essentially one of proving he's an ass, it looks to the LIV like insult to injury.

What's funny about that whole thing? Taiwan and China are actually cooperating in the World Courts on the issue... as both support the historic Chinese claim..

If we stay out of it, they will eventually negotiate this out... between the 5 or 6 Countries involved... China is building these atolls so they have a seat at the Table, as a large part of their shipping goes through these waters...

But if we play the heavy handed World Cop crap... it could devolve into an actual confrontation IMO.

2. It's from a play that became a movie

3. It has a meaning whether or not you like or agree with it:

Manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity.

4. Or they use it to describe a situation in which someone believes another person is attempting to manipulate viewpoints or opinion. Right? Either or is possible here, right?

My own answer would be that the term, of course, derives from the movie's title, which has two meanings: it reflects that the prevalent form of lighting in 1880 (when the movie takes place) was gas and that, in the movie, in order to drive his wife insane, the leading man fiddles with the gaslight in the house, making it glow bright or dim with no apparent reason.

So, because of that, the term "gaslighting" came into common use as shorthand for someone telling you that what you clearly, rationally perceive is completely wrong - and that you are the only one who believes what you believe.

I'm no JamesMadison, but does that help?

347 Dao did not "cause" force to be used against him; the airline had the option of asking him once again to leave, and then coming up with some other option that did not involve force. The airline had all of the power here, not Dao, and the fact that he may have anticipated them taking some illegal action against him is not relevant at all to the case he has against them.

At least if I'm his attorney, that's the argument I make to get that evidence tossed out. I think it's a winner. By publicly blaming the cops yesterday, the United CEO has already destroyed any argument his legal team could have made about the "necessity" of his treatment.

United will *never* let this go to trial, even if he ups the ante to $50 million. They're going to lose 10 times that if this drags out in some political show trial where they will be raked over the coals every day. It isn't just that Dao is going to win; he has ALREADY won. All that's left is to bicker about the price tag, and even there Dao is holding a straight flush.

Not only would the political norm of the early 60s be considered "far rightwing" in today's politics, but most people of that era would call the modern Democrat party's goals flat out evil.

I mean seriously, imagine how the public in say 1962 would have reacted to a candidate running on a platform of:

Jailing Christians
Banning free speech
Government funded abortions
etc...etc..etc..

359 I think gaslighting is a useful shorthand term for a simple discrete concept.

You want mush? OMG... where to start? We could have whole mush contest thread.

361 I can't understand siding with that crying bitch doctor. His pussiness makes my skin crawl. No consideration for the other passengers or the unseen passengers on the flight the crew were going to. Nope, fuck them. I went to Ho Chi Minh upstairs medical college and paid $109 for my transferable refundable ticket. I'm surprised a passenger didn't knock him cold when he came running back on the plane. I guarantee he wouldn't have said a word if some other passenger had been picked in the lottery, so it wasn't the principle, it was the principal.

363 NYT is running big story today about Republicans "fearful" and pushing same horseshit about Georgia special election next week. Features a picture of Dem candidate Osoff that belongs in the dictionary under "pencil-neck".

365 Liar media did the same thing with the other election that took place to replace Mike Pompeo.

In first report, CBS radio announced that the republican won by an eight point margin. In the next report, it turned out the race was "unexpectedly tight".

Deception, dissembling and deflection is their expertise. They are not journalists, unless the definition of journalist is Professional Liar.

366 totally correct not to get cocky though. Republicans actually need to pass some good policy and get shit done. Otherwise, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Maj Leader Shumer are in our future.

367 So, winning by 8 points is 'unexpectedly close'?

Good to know.

369 Soory, I'm not drinking the Koolaid. I remember when Dems won an election in Palm Beach by 30 and they were celebrating about how bad the Tea Party lost, I pointed out that if every district performed the same, Republicans would pick up 80 seats in 2010. Winning by 5 in Kansas is an ominous sign. Even worse is if they lose Georgia.

370 Stupid analysis by MSM. I grew up in KS and it's fairly well known that sedgwick County (read wichita) is leftist. Sure they elect republicans, but they are true RINOs (i.e. they really are Dems but realize if they don't run as an R they probably won't win). MSM trues to use that to cast Sedgwick as moderate but that's only true on a federal scale, for KS it's liberal. Kansas used the term RINO before the term came to mean liberal to moderate Republicans as we honestly had people run as Republican who never voted R in any federal elections. They did this because many if not most races in Kansas are decided in the Republican primary.

I guess I'm saying the MSM analysis is not to be trusted...I know, shocking
