North Korea Isn't A Problem Just For Us

Crazy little fat boy Kim Jong-un, when he isn't pulling the wings off flies and murdering his relatives, is a constant annoyance to South Korea, Japan, and the United States. Nobody expects that his bluster about destroying those three countries is anything other than the masturbatory fantasies of a lunatic, but he does command a small arsenal of nuclear weapons, and has delivery vehicles that sometimes don't explode in mid-flight, so he is a threat.

Will he win a war? Of course not, but his killing possibly millions of people in South Korea or Japan before he loses is not an outcome that the free world relishes.

Luckily he seems to be a giant pain in the ass to China, and this article lays out the issues fairly well. China: Those Troublesome Koreans

China is increasingly angry at Koreans in general for not showing sufficient respect. The biggest (and growing) problem is North Korea. China wants a stable communist dictatorship in North Korea, not a failed government that would send several million starving refugees fleeing across the border. China also does not want North Korea to collapse and get absorbed by South Korea. That would put a democracy on China's border and give many Chinese a view of how things might be much better with a different political system in China. Koreans are seen as "younger brothers" to China, and it's embarrassing if the younger brother outdoes his older sibling. South Korean democracy is played down in China, but that would be difficult if a democratic, united, Korea were right on the border.

We have batted around the many possible solutions to The Kim Jong-un Situation, and my personal favorite is a quick and painless Chinese bullet in his head, followed by a benevolent dictator firmly controlled by Beijing.

[I think I saw this article on Notorious MWR's Twitter feed...]

[Addendum]And here is MWR's commentary, which is annoyingly better and more interesting than mine:

"I've said it before and I'll say it again: Kim Jong Un is a frigging Millennial. Think about that for a minute.

Picture Shrieking Yale Girl from a couple years ago, the one who had the profane hissy fit over Halloween costumes.

Now take her mentality - privileged, entitled, demanding respect while offering none in return - and give her a bad hair cut missiles.

That is Kim Jong Un."

He is a Millennial both literally (he was born in 1984) and mentally, with the added "bonus" that he doesn't just have unearned privilege, he legitimately has NEVER had anyone call him on his shit in any lasting way.

Kim Jong Un is what you get if the Mizzou students of the world take over the reins of power.

Be fricking scared, people.

3 That article I saw over at Insty. Trump, through Syria and having Tillerson declare that strategic patience is over, may be forcing China to stop kicking the can down the road. I am certain that China has no interest in actual North Korean nuclear tipped missiles lifting off with their history of defects. And as about as much interest as a nuclear response to North Korea happening on their own doorstep.

Stay Tuned.

''China has a bottom line that it will protect at all costs, that is, the security and stability of northeast China... If the bottom line is touched, China will employ all means available including the military means to strike back. By that time, it is not an issue of discussion whether China acquiesces in the US' blows, but the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) will launch attacks to DPRK nuclear facilities on its own.''

How hard could that really be in this technological era?

The dumbest would be a traditional US led invasion where we then take care of North Korea for the next 50+ years and our great grandkids will have US boots still on the ground. And that's a best case scenario, I could see them lobbing a few nukes once they started losing and seeing the writing on the wall.

75 The Saga:

Chelsea Clinton stands in the center of the octagon. Bright lights flash overhead as she prowls about throwing punches, the snarl of a slightly irked chipmunk on her face.
"Which one of you will challenge me? I lead by right of blood, being only child of Bill and Hillary! Who would challenge me for my claim to the throne?"
A murmur goes through the ranks of the DNC, ranks thinned by the suicide charges ordered by the Triumvirate of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid. Chelsea begins to gloat as she thinks of the billions she will rake in. "Wheee! I love not having to care about money! Whee!"
"I challenge!" A voice calls out.
"Who? I know that voice, but it can't be!"
A tall, beautiful, blonde steps into the cage.
"Ivanka! But you're a Republican!"
"I love my father and support him all the way as a good, dutiful daughter should. But everyone says I'm a Leftist, so why not take over this wretched organization?"
"This is my family's legacy, power and the perks that go with it! Consider us BFF's no more!"
"So fight!"

********

The two move about the caged ring trading punches and kicks. Ivanka is brought down as Chelsea sweeps her legs from beneath her, yelling "Cankle Power!"
Ivanka hits the canvas and springs into a back flip, returning to ready. She wades in and throws three quick punches at Chelsea. The Clintonite princess' eyes cross independently like swooping barn swallows as the referee steps in.
"How many fingers am I holding up?"
Chelsea fails to focus. "Poughkeepsie?"
Bill whispers to the Mook "That's the smartest thing I've heard her say."
The fight lasts for a few more minutes of concentrated mayhem before Ivanka is declared winner.

Back in the Oval Office Trump says "Good work there, sweety, I knew you'd come through."
"Thanks daddy, I've decided that I'm going to add a new line of accessories to my brand. I'm working on some new purses made out of genuine donkey hide. Do you think they'll sell?"
"I'm sure you'll make out well with those, you have a good eye for style."
"Daddy? One more thing - could I have complete gun-control?"
"Now, sweety, you know I keep my promises so I can't do that. Give the kids a kiss for me."

He hangs up the phone and fist-bumps the Golden Scalp Weasel. "I think that should give them enough chaos and confusion to provide cover for tax reform."
The Golden Scalp Weasel nods in reply.

138 I think one of the things you're seeing in North Korea, especially with regards to China's treatment of it, is the fallout from a hereditary dictatorship that exists in a highly insular bubble. Even the USSR had SOME exposure to life beyond the Iron Curtain; not so North Korea.

Kim Il Sung started the Korean War and it was under his watch that North Korea became a Thing.

Kim Jong Il took over for his father, but still would have had memories of a time BEFORE a divided Korea.

Now you've got Kim Jong Tubby running the show, though, and he has ALWAYS only known divided Korea. He has always only known the life of a protected political scion. I honestly believe he's fallen into the trap of believing his own hype, and there's no one around him who is brave enough or knowledgeable enough to tell him, "No, escalating this situation is NOT going to make things better. You are NOT going to play the world like a chess master. You are going to get us all killed." Anyone who might have told him that is already dead.

I think China's beginning to realize that their Little Brother is getting a bit too big for his britches, and they need to smack him down before he starts trying to stage a hostile takeover of the family company and insert himself, the illegitimate heir, into the CEO's chair.

(I've seen too many Korean dramas. It's affecting my metaphors. :\ )

157 Trump hit Syria for a combination of reasons, not the least of which was that MSM was setting him up to look weak and indecisive -- the drumbeats had started right after the video of the gas attacks went wide. A US President can't be made to look weak and indecisive.

Having it leaked that he did it for the children is good cover, and actually one of the several reasons he did it

See, I like the way Korean sounds. It sounds like the Italian of east Asia. It can be quite lovely, when it's not being shouted at you as you're trying to loot a Korean grocery store.

I prefer Japanese, though, which sounds so much more crisp and clean. And I prefer BOTH over "Chinese" (Cantonese or Mandarin), which is interesting, but extremely grating.

Of course Little Kim has a stockpile of chemical weapons that likely can be fitted to one or more of the missiles currently being tested. Locals in his 'hood wouldn't like that very much either.

China stands to receive hundreds of thousands of starving North Koreans if things go south. I'm sure they really don't want to deal with that. South Korea stands to lose the most, but might be more willing to cozy up to Xi if he solves their problem post haste.

233 Why would they want to, though?
Culturally/spiritually, there's probably a drive to reunite the
peninsula, but practically, I don't think the average person in the ROK thinks absorbing a bunch of starving people from a country that doesn't produce much of anything is going to be a walk in the park.

East/West Germany was easy compared to what that would look like.

Posted by: hogmartin at April 12, 2017 01:12 PM (8nWyX)

That's the problem right there. The economic and cultural differences between North and South Korea are SO stark that reunification is virtually impossible.

South Korea's economy is going gang busters, and trying to assimilate their North Korean counterparts - starving, under- or uneducated, impoverished and subservient - would be a huge blow to their economy.

They may want to be unified, just like East and West Germany, but the odds of that happening immediately are slim to none, IMO.

Some kind of slow, incremental transition phase might work if given a long enough period of time, but considering the only regional actors who could step in and support the North Korean people during such a transition are China or Russia - neither of which would give it up again without a fight - the odds of a unified Korea become even more bleak.

As far as EMP I believe the scientist types have pretty much discounted that. Our government loves to tax us for our own good. Providing the electric grid with EMP protection could be achieved fairly inexpensively with a one-time $100 or less charge on our electric bills.

That they haven't done this tells me it's either already been done, or is in the process of being done, or isn't necessary.

It almost has a sense of Br'er Rabbit to the Fox - 'please don't explode a nuke five miles over our head'. Given the option of having one sparked off two thousand feet over my head or 25,000 feet -- the answer is simple.

I heard all that about the Germans, and frankly, The ROK has a better economy than the Bonn Republic did.

Unless, of course, Red China stands in the way, and that sadly is likely, Korean reunification *could* happen tommorrow, even with the economic costs.

I wouldn't go that far. But count me among the minority, especially in internet comment sections, who think the notion that three fission-sizes nukes going off very high up over the US will kill 80% of us in the fullness of time, is overblown.

William Forstchen's "One Second After" is a gripping story and a good warning. There's cause for concern. But he made all implicit assumptions in the worst case possible, stole a base or two technically, and so to me his book is the EMP equivalent of "The seas will rise 80 feet by 2100."

343 Why would they want to, though? Culturally/spiritually, there's probably a drive to reunite the peninsula, but practically, I don't think the average person in the ROK thinks absorbing a bunch of starving people from a country that doesn't produce much of anything is going to be a walk in the park. East/West Germany was easy compared to what that would look like.
Posted by: hogmartin at April 12, 2017 01:12 PM (8nWyX)

This raises an interesting question: how WOULD you reabsorb North Korea without engendering utter chaos?

I think you'd have to send in food (of course) and encourage businesses to open plants there, but keep it fenced off under military rule and only gradually allow free movement, perhaps over a decade.

Why would a South Korean want to bail out a failed California/Mexico population (metaphorically speaking)? It's just bad business to take on all of those extra non-contributing mouths to feed. It certainly seems more convenient to just melt the problem and let it run down the drain.

Posted by: goon at April 12, 2017 02:47 PM (EaQ6/)

351 Greetings:

Most of what I know of Korea comes from watching those
historical serial dramas on KBS and MBC. Oh, and those lovely K-Pop ladies. So
there's that.

Korea is
basically a Confucian culture in the Samuel Huntington sense. The separation of
families is a major and recurrent theme in the aforementioned dramas. While the
South's view of a positive benefit from reunion, the filial assessment of the
North may be that subjugation of the South is the filial thing to do.

China, Korea, and
Japan have be going at each other, on and off, for centuries with one or the
other or the other being the dominant player at any given time.

They are all
down with the kow-tow and who is/was the tributary and who was the Emperor.
While things may look kind of hunky-dory on the surface, Asian thinking tends
to run deep.

As to the North's
current despot, I realize that we are informed that he is the Boss of All
Bosses on a pretty much daily basis. But in those dramas, there's the King, the
nobles, the scholars, the gentry, the merchants, the peasants, and the slaves,
and, of course, the noble and not so noble outlaws all out and about for their
own interests. Again, Asian thinking being what it is, I remain open-minded
about whether it's a strong man or front man deal or some less visible
communistic cabal working from and in the background.

Lastly though, is
this. For me the "strategic question" as one of my professors labeled
it, "Why would the Chicoms want to relieve us of this burden?". We
are certainly adversaries in their eyes and the North costs us time and
resources. Relocating 150,000 of their troops could be in interesting military
exercise and nothing more. Probably no where near enough to put an end to the
regime as even the North Koreans are unlikely to welcome the Chinese for very
long.
