Ace of Spades Pet Thread

petthreadcover.jpg

Good afternoon 'rons, 'ettes, lurkers and critters. Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Get yourself a beverage, a snack and enjoy the world of critters.

A Little Of This. A Little Of That.

From our buddy Hrothgar, thank you for passing this along.

I think I first heard of the "Garden & Gun" magazine at AoS but won't swear to that. Interesting magazine for us Southrons. At any rate, I was perusing a copy whilst waiting for a relative at the Doctor's office and found they have a section called "Good Dog" with short stories about, what else, dogs! I have read a couple of them and they are light fare but all seem to be written by the kind of people that would frequent the Pet Thread. I enjoyed "Walk Me!"

Their site is a bit disorganized, but if you go to
http://gardenandgun.com/sporting/
and scroll down to the Good Dogs section you can see links to several stories. A direct link to a good one is
http://gardenandgun.com/articles/naughty-by-nature/

Regards
Hrothrgar

Do you talk to your pets? Don't fret, you aren't crazy. h/t L, Elle

Nice site from one of our regulars. Cute doggehs are included.

OK, so I'm late celebrating K-9 Veterans Day. But, a nice website to check out. h/t KT

Meet The PetMorons

Howdy!

Saturday's Pet Thread is always one of my weekend highlights because I've loved cats and dogs all my life. I'm having a tough time now because my cat has been diagnosed with lymphoma and doesn't have much time left with us.
I'm part of Da Tech Guy's crew of bloggers and wrote about my situation in my blog post this week. I invite you to take a look at it in the link below. If you think the piece is worthy, I'd appreciate it if you would include the link in this week's Pet Thread.

Thanks for your consideration, and thank you for proving your special thread week after week.

(aka Outside Adjitator at AoSHQ)

Dr. Kent submitted this photo. Hope his back isn't shredded.

Bubba. 1 of 7 and the only male. Just hanging out with his best friend.

Check the story about this vicious dog owned by Kim.

Dear Petmoron,

Attached are photos of our watchdog, Gemma our 3 year old Shih Tzu. She watches over our farm and keeps us safe. We will never have to worry about an out of control leaf or butterfly that comes a bit too close.

Enjoy

connor.jpg

Another mistreated PetMoron. This one belongs to Hrothrgar

IIRC, you asked for some more dog pictures, and even though he has starred in the prestigious pet thread before, Conor T. Hrothgar asked to have another chance. Conor reminds me almost every day that a dog is a blessing and keeps me laughing the rest of the time.
This picture is how Conor rode out Stella, the most vicious and dangerous winter storm in recorded history (well at least since January 1 2017)!

gml.jpg

What a devoted dog. Listen to what gml has to say about Murph.

My husband had to have emergency surgery recently. Turned out it was more serious than we thought. He was in the hospital for 3 weeks. His best friend Murph held a vidual every night until he came home. This is him watching the door. He will be okay but it will take a little time.

Hope your hubby is doing well gml.

Hi! I go by the handle Thursby. This is my 2 yo Basset Hound Rapunzel. She is making herself comfortable while I'm raking leafs.

caligirl.jpg

What an adorable little kitten. Caligirl had this to say about this kitty.

This is Ava the bengal. She hasn't made the thread although her sister Reagan has. She is not supposed to be counter surfing, but here she is.

CaliGirl.

You guys & gals sure take wonderful photos. Thank you for sharing them with us today. They are a fine group of PetMorons. If you have a tip, story or a photo, you can submit them here to petmorons at gmail dot com.

Here's hoping that you and your loved ones have a great week!!!

10 Could use some 'horde pet help with something...my dog on occassion, about once a month or so, will have seizures that last only 15-30 minutes or so. If I walk him though it he's back to normal, but it's a painful 15-30 minutes to watch. I have a video at

11 Today is Harli's birfday. She's 9 years old as of 7:32 PM EDT.

5 years ago today, she killed my husband's parakeet Jackie, age 14, after 4 years of dedicated stalking. Jackie had been born in that house, and since her momma was clueless, was handfed by my eldest stepdaughter.

We buried her in the park that day after work, and he felt somewhat better. I now live next to that park.

That day marked another first - I discovered that I'd developed a sensitivity to poison ivy that I'd never had before, and contracted a raving case of PI that tormented me for the next 6 weeks.

Happy Caturday, Horde.

15 My cat is teaching me to play kitchen billiards.

I roll the little foam ball at her, and she bats it back. Sometimes it's at me, sometimes it's in a completely different direction, and at other times, it hits the leg of a chair or the table leg and bounces back to me.

This is her new Cat Thing.

/there is also the possibility she is teaching me how to fetch.

Naw, I'll sometimes say nonsense words in a cheery voice and Lydia will come boinga boinga from wherever she's napping to get rubs. Technically, she's probably not trying to understand me, but she comes when called, even if it's not her name. And I can't talk on the phone without both of them coming in and meowing at me. Either it's because they hear me speaking, or because they hear me paying attention to something that isn't them.

That hasn't been my experience. My male cat, Dexter, responds to me when I ask how he is doing, does he want to go out in the backyard, time for bed, etc.

One disappointing thing owning a Lab is you CANNOT take them fishing with you.

Anything that lands in the water, by law, MUST be retrieved, so there goes the top water lures when bass fishing.

Walking up through the middle of a trout stream while you're trying to drift a dry fly is not conducive to catch anything, either.

You can take them boating if you overlook their total lack of the concept of boating safety, however.

Where they shine is bringing back whatever you shot.

Maddie Update:

The little doofus just turned 7 months old. She's mostly housebroken (but then, so am I, so...) and we've been taking her to weekly training sessions for about the last 5 or 6 weeks. She really catches on quickly (we're thinking it's the Border Collie in her), but seems to have a hearing problem:

It's selective.

She's so much calmer since we started the lessons, and is such a sweetie.

Since we have major Passover prep this weekend and seders Monday and Tuesday, she's at Doggie Camp for the next few days (she's been there a few times before, the kennel is also our vet for the past 30 odd years).

Little stinker immediately started a kiss attack on the tech, completely ignoring me! Separation anxiety apparently isn't in her vocabulary.

62 Our cat was neutered last week and there were complications. Apparently when she was tying things off, something slipped and so the knot disappeared into the abyss. He's ok since she did get one knot in, but he's extra sensitive because they had to do some digging to check.

So...yeah now he's really smelly because he doesn't care if he leaks urine and we just took off the cone of shame.

Pine-soling the entire house now...

77 Yeah i might have to hate Caligirl for her kitchen since mine is pretty, buy cramped but looks like a horsewoman who cooks runs it. I bought this place for the barns and lighted arena. That Cray is adorable too.

Whoever said cats dont listen needs to talk more to the fat and really watch them. Even my feral cats listen. One of my babies from Lulu, the former kitten bomb, talks back when you talk to her. Now i admit i talk to all animals like people, since i spend many hours alone. Watching them carefully, all seem to listen in different ways. Horse will give you an ear, turn to look at you. Dog looks at you and gives both ears, cats --like people, jave microexpressions. They sure as shit listen but you gotta look harder. Whiskers move, ears flick. Eyes blink. My hairless cats would clearly smile, frown, and furrow their brows at you, too. But with furry cats unless you look hard you cant see it.

If silver hears Yogurt or now "creamy goodness" she goes nits, because she wants some. If three boys great me say "put jellybean in her room" they go nuts because that means im going to let them in the house from my art studio. They hear the housekeepers name, no reaction. Hear her name plus "is here" or "at the door" or "let her in" they hide behind their daybed.

Tini very clearly listened to what i had to say and her expression changed as i spoke. It was clear to see because there was no hair on her face to obscure it, and was hilarious.

110 Gushka!!

WRT cats listening, first of all, cats have different priorities than dogs. But like dogs, cats are also individuals, so it depends on the cat.

Thirdly, cats are often even more sensitive to a person's mood and attitude than dogs are, which is often why people who hate cats (or are just anxious) have a lot of complaints about cats ignoring them or being rude or destructive or whatever, and less so for people who love cats (apart from other obvious reasons).

I've talked to a lot of cats that talk back, and/or responded to very specific words, like fetching a particular item.

I catsitted recently, the kitteh was supposed to be a terror, what I had for a couple of days was a cuddlemonster who loved to lay purring with one paw on my arm when I was on my computer.

Which leads me to the last point - if you have a problem cat, maybe the cat doesn't like *you*?

Retired veterinarian uncle was visiting my parents and saw dad wrestling their ~8 year old cat, toss him on the bed, tackle him, etc. Uncle, who has been working with cats for several decades was stunned. "He lets you DO that? How is he not clawing your face off?!"

Admittedly, uncle saw cats at their least-friendly time, but dude, yeah, this cat loves wrestling. He'd let you tie him to a kite and fly him around on the 4th of July with a sparkler up his butt if it meant he was getting attention.

I don't understand that either. This sounds mean but if I was broke and my pets we not re-homable for whatever reason I would have a friend shoot them before I'd let them suffer.

Lots of people dump pets off "out in the country". Dogs get shot if they are bothering livestock. My friends will take the cats to the vet, get their shots and keep them as barn cats. But the cats always disappear after a few years. Coyotes I imagine.

I had to move and get rid of my cat. But it was very expensive and very lengthy to get her rehomed in a good place (approaching something like half a year, IIRC). I happened to know some friends who are passionate about cat rescue, so they took her in, trained her to behave, and did all the work of finding a potential match, and I paid for all the food, veterinary, and made donations to their rescue. The worst part was that it took a long time to retrain her not to bite or scratch, because I always let her do that to me. In fact the savagery amused me so I encouraged it. Not good if you might need to rehome your cat in the future.

They basically pull up to your driveway in an RV modified to be a clinic, and they're usually even equipped to do minor surgery on the spot. The cost isn't much more than taking them to an office, and it's worth it for a pet that gets serious trip-to-the-vet trauma. 150 I had to take my cat to the vet to get her rabies shot a few weeks ago.

She's getting way better about being picked up, but when she realized she was going Into The Carrier, she got really scared, and dug a claw into the inside of my elbow.

Eventually got into the carrier, there was a lot of protest meowing, but had a good visit.

The puncture wound was a bit painful, but... worth if for a good vet visit.

151 Rocky,

My Russian Blue is the only cat in the house that has always used the cat box. Sometimes, he'll even go back to use the one I still have in the bedroom (from when we were getting the cats used to the springer).

152 We're in our little beach town this weekend, and the oldest bar is having it's 71st aniversary.

It's nice to b in a place where people can smoke and bring their doggehs.
There's a small energetic mutt running around loose in here wearing a shirt that says "SECURITY". I assume he's the bouncer.

153 I had a dog that had seizures. I had some success using Rescue Remedy. I'd give him a few drops when I could tell that a seizure was coming on. It seemed to help and it's not going to harm him.

154 We met a guy today that trains dogs for the police department. He's about done with a lab that will be the first dog trained to judge if you are high on pot. It was pretty interesting. He said most departments are moving away
from shepherds to hunting dogs. He had three labs with him. We asked him to contact us when he has classes again. We need help with the crazy springer.

156 wt[ : I have a dog with epilepsy, and those few minutes she is seizing are horrible. All I can do is sit with her and let her. She always looks like she is terrified by what is happening. Our vet said that as long as she was only having three or four seizures a year, everything was okay. But if she started having them more frequently, we should bring her in for a check up. I would suggest that the next time you take your dog to the vet, ask him for his opinion.

Also: The 'ron who is considering a border collie mix -- think long and hard about sharing your home with a dog who is smarter than you ever will be. My dog with epilepsy is part border collie, and is perpetually one step ahead of us. The list of her misdoings is far, far too long to write here. She may look sound asleep, but that busy brain of hers is working at 100% capacity.

157 Just found out yesterday my beautiful beautiful boy an 11 yo golden doodle Scnitzel has bladder cancer and a few weeks to live. I just am lost and can't stop blubbering. I love him so much and he's always been such a good dog. I don't know what to do. He's happy and active and eating and playing. This morning he woke up in a small puddle of blood. I don't know what to do
