An Expression I've Come to Loathe [Warden]

An acquaintance of mine was recently diagnosed with cancer. As many people do today, he shared the news on Facebook so people outside his family and close friends would know what was going on with him. I always find this to be an awkward situation when I don't know someone well enough to pick up the phone and call, but do know them well enough to be saddened and concerned over the news.

Usually in these situations I'll either avoid commenting at all or tell the person that I'll pray for him and his family. And then, I always make sure that I follow through because I think it's an awful thing to just casually tell someone he'll be in your prayers when you don't really mean it.

I've spend more of my life as an agnostic than I have as a Christian and it's no big deal to me when other people don't pray, but there's a substitute expression that a lot of atheist/agnostic people fall back on that I positively despise: Sending good vibes your way.

The way I see it, if you think prayer is some sort of mystical hokum then how is it that you believe in "vibes" instead? What are these vibes? Can you see them? Can they be measured? And how, exactly, does one send them? Is it like ESP? Do you wave your fingers? Is there some sort of sacred incantation developed by the Celtic druids of yore?

See, here's what gets under my skin--I don't think that the people who write this line actually believe in vibes. It's a goofy, stupid idea, but they say it anyway because this grotesque, reproductive attempt at expressing belief in something greater and more powerful sounds good to them.

And so, yeah this is a get off my lawn moment, but goddamnit this world has enough phoniness in it without adding, in response to a man's likely death sentence, promises of such trite, nonsensical nature that there can't be any possible intention of keeping them.

I get it, it's awkward to respond sometimes. People want to say something kind and aren't sure how to go about it. But there are so many ways around that one phrase--"Thinking of you," for example, or "Please get well, we're all pulling for you."

Everything doesn't have to be an immediate, kneejerk, whatever-happens-to-come-to-mind response. There's room for pausing and giving thought to your words. And if there's ever a time to do it, it's when someone announces to you that his time of living may be very, very close to an end.

10 I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer last December (15). I did not tell anyone other than the people at work so they would not be wondering why I would be in and out for a while. Although I did not tell anyone, I liver with a blabber mouth. I guess the best thing was that a lot of her male friends finally quit putting off getting an exam. 11 If you are a Christian, death is a sad thing, but not the end of all things.

If you aren't religious death is the end. And it is truly a terrible thing. Almost no one can really face this, and so the people that don't believe in anything above the materialistic world have to come up with something to hide that fear and horror.

14 My pet peeve is, after someone passes, "He will be missed." Why not "I will miss him"? Why won't YOU miss him yet apparently you know for a fact that others will?

I guess you can send "healing vibes" if, as one friend of mine does, the sick person is into Wicca. I guess then you believe in stuff like that, but it still seems mighty silly.

And now it seems that "Our thoughts and prayers are with you" is getting abbreviated down to just "Thoughts and prayers."

I'm sorry about your friend, Warden.

I find it fascinating that people that will endlessly examine the intricacies of nature specifically have no interest in why religion exists.

Ignoring the question of whether or not there is a "sky god" or not, almost all modern societies adopted religions of various sorts during their early development. Obviously religion, and especially organized religion*, are a major advantage for human beings.

* and especially Christianity, and especially Protestant Christianity...

37 Jay, me too - "reach out" - one of the most annoying expressions pioneered in the last 10-20 years. I recall for some reason one particular boss (odd situation, technically a boss but many of us had our own mission and mandate and he didn't interfere) who used that expression at one staff meeting. I instantly thought less of him - especially because he was old enough that he had picked it up very late in his life/career. Inexcusable.

Anyway, heartfelt prayers for your friend, Warden.

180 i have among my closest friends, former Soviet Scientists. They are hardcore atheists, but we love each other like family. I am deeply religious but i also come from a really weird background and can appreciate those who simply DON'T or CAN'T believe in anything. Nevertheless, i have noticed that Russians believe in luck, love and good wishes. So this is what i say to my Atheist friends whom my God Bothering ways might offend... (note this is only for people who TRULY DESERVE such consideration-- not evangelical Atheist jerks.) I tell them "You have my very best wishes for the best outcome and as always you (or your family) are held close to my heart."

They survived Stalin. I never forget how they lovingly explained how to survive a police state to me and how not to cultivate the habit of "a slave mind" in oppressive conditions. Im not so much into vibes, but i do pray that someday they realize that my God bothering wont hurt them.

I have found next to "Thy Will Be Done." The most effective prayer is "I am (or whoever is) in trouble and You know better than i do what forces are at work and what needs to happen. PLEASE HELP AS YOU KNOW BEST. amen." I figure let God surprise us how its solved. who am i to give the Supreme Being orders?

181 Powered by prayer, and living it every day.

Diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in May 2016, still around and doing pretty well, with a few hundred friends from church doing their best to lift me up. I'm very grateful and very blessed. Too many "God things" going on to mention here.

When I'm sent "good vibes", positive thoughts, or "keeping you in mind" I smile and thank the giver, but they don't understand how the Maker of the Universe works.

182 Whenever someone tells you, "I'm sending light your way", tell them to go fuck themselves with a ribbed I-beam. Sideways. And that you'll be stopping by later to watch your rottweiler skull fuck their exit wounds.

184 Despite my gross analysis above, Jesus did more for humanity by Not acting than he did acting. The temptation of Christ was to dole out the power of God on humanities evil. He resisted because he knew he was to be the slaughtered Lamb. I can't think of anyone in history who would forego such a chance of vigilance.

185 Best thing to say about cancer is to suggest research on zero carbs, high fat, and carefully measured protein.

187 Quite right. Anyone and everyone I am connected to on FB knows that I am not in the church going, believer, praying camp, so saying, "I will pray for you" is quite obviously disingenuous. Thus I do as you suggest, offer a simple, "Thinking of you", sometimes adding, "and hoping for the best".

What's awkward is that someone you know and care about is gravely ill - expressing sincere sympathy is a simple act of kindness.
