By Promoting False Narrative of Rising Anti-Semitism Due to Trump Victory, Media Created the Very Incentives for the JCC Hoaxers to Make Their Threats
Police sources told Haaretz that the [Israeli-American teenaged JCC bomb hoaxer's] main goal appears to have been obtaining media coverage. He had been making bomb threats for at least two years, against a wide variety of targets in several different countries, and after every such threat, he would monitor the media. If the threat didn’t provoke much response, he would lose interest in that target and try again somewhere else. But if the threat did create a media stir, he'd start targeting similar institutions in the same general locale in the hope of producing a similar media buzz. For most of the last two years–during which he threatened targets like shopping malls and airlines, as well as Jewish institutions in countries like Australia, New Zealand, and America–his threats produced little media coverage, so he didn't repeat them. But after Trump's election, he suddenly hit pay dirt. Threats against U.S. Jewish institutions fit right into the American Jewish community's loudly proclaimed narrative that the election had empowered right-wing anti-Semites, epitomized by Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt’s ludicrous assertion that U.S. anti-Semitism was now at a level unseen since 1930s Germany. Moreover, such threats fit right into the broader left-wing narrative that Trump’s election had empowered white supremacists, racists and other right-wing hate groups. Consequently, whereas anti-Semitic acts received little media coverage during President Barack Obama's tenure, they suddenly began receiving massive media attention following Trump's election–not just in America, but worldwide. The result, given the teen’s longstanding modus operandi, was inevitable: For the past few months, the Israeli police sources said, he has focused all his energy on threatening Jewish institutions in the U.S., because he knew that would create the media outcry he wanted.There's more, too: Obama never pushed for an escalation in the investigation, even though most of this happened under his watch. Trump did, and pushed additional resources into the probe, and caught the guy.

I don't think it will make much difference in the downward trajectory of the coal industry though. Fracking and the discovery of so many natural gas fields in and near the US almost dictate that coal is going the way of whale oil. The free market truly is a marvel at allocating resources to their most efficient uses and making sure that the most efficient inputs are chosen.

Coal has some future. Some future technology will render it useful and benign. That's an enormous amount of energy stashed away.
Trump allowing the coal miners a last hurrah isn't going to destroy the planet. Even the Chinese are giving it the stink eye anymore.
But long term, some technology, not yet available has to fix it.

Natural gas is soooo much cleaner for power plants, and we have figured out way to extract it so cheaply and have such an abundant supply, the US will probably never have to import it in several lifetimes.
I honestly feel bad for people in that industry (and maybe they shouldn't have been a solid base of Democrat support for a century) but it's a dying source of energy.

Selling coal to China, even if their demand begins to fall, is still an excellent way for Americans to earn money and balance a lop-sided trade situation.
Buried in reports I've read is global co2 production is down. The USA, thanks to fracking and abundant supplies of NatGas, is using more gas, less coal. Coal, iirc, is now #2 for electricity generation.
If the democrats would just shut up with the incessant 'sky is falling bullshit' and let free markets reign, life would be a whole lot simpler and less annoying.

The move to natural gas is being driven by the dreaded CO2 emissions. Natural gas plants emit about half the CO2 per kilowatt of electricity. But gas is more expensive as a fuel.
We went through a similar natural gas is taking over trend in the late 1990's when gas was dirt cheap. In two years that all changed, and suddenly coal was King again.

So I took the day off of work two weeks ago and drove to DC for the Heritage foundation protest on Ryancare. After we stood and listened to speakers for an hour and a half (13 degrees and snow flurries that day), we went in to talk to congressmen about this.
Ryan's office had a big ol' sign on the closed, locked door saying "no admittance except by prior appointment". I knocked until they answered anyway so I could express my opposition to what they were doing:-P
BTW, his number is 202-225-3031. But he is one that just turns on his full answering machine to avoid talking to us proles.

It does produce more CO2 and other incidental gases but it produses way less SO2 (sulfur dioxide) which really is a pollutant (unlike CO2 which they just call a pollutant).

Coal has more particulate emissions and rad particles over NatGas, which is why you'll never find a coal fired plant next to a nuke plant. They fuck up background levels of radiation above NRC limits and such sites can't even be considered.
(Vic probably knows of some plant somewhere, but it's extremely rare.)

There is more H2O put in the atmosphere by the cooling towers at a power plant than from burning the coal or natural gas. There is more water put into the atmosphere from evaporation of the river or ocean that provides cooling water to most power plants.
Natural gas generates about one half the CO2 as coal does per kilowatt.
And clouds made of water vapor COOL the Earth.
More clouds, MORE Cooling.

When the press says 'we don't want to cover terrorism because publicity is what they seek' they're not totally wrong. Terrorists do what they do in order to get publicity, because that's the only way terrorism works: fear and spreading attention to their cause.
When the press says 'we don't like to mention ethnicity or immigration status in a crime because it might cause backlash' they are not totally wrong. There are idiots who might go out and beat up some Mexican American because they think he's illegal.
The problem is, they also have a responsibility to report the truth, not cover it up out of fear something bad may happen. They also don't care if they talk about Dylan Root's whiteness and connections to white supremacists and the consequences that might raise.
Their agenda -- shape public policy -- outweighs their stated concerns about consequences. The media has spent over 6 months drumming up hysteria and rage against Donald Trump and his supporters, almost as if they are trying to instill violence and hostility.
But they know that if they accurately and consistently report Democrat Party affiliation, Muslim religion, and immigration status, it will affect policy and public reaction.

When a Democrat is president, general societal problems tend be ignored, glossed over, presumed to be caused by a prior Republican administration, and/or presented as intractable issues that a dedicated Democrat President is burning the midnight oil to resolve.
The watchdogs of the press are much more vigilant and skeptical (to say the least) when a Republican is in office.
They can also be counted on, mid-term, to flagellate themselves for being too tough on an Obama or Clinton; or not being tough enough on a Bush or Trump.

Natgas can be turned into very high purity gasoline, diesel and jet fuel via gas-to-liquids processes.
Qatar, which sits atop an enormous reservoir of gas, just recently opened their own wholly owned and operated GTL conversion plant. The margins are higher in liquid fuels than just selling the natural gas.
We could be using nuclear and clean coal for baseload electric, and running our entire vehicle fleet (to include aircraft) off of natural gas derived, GTL-processed liquid fuels. All of it domestically sourced and processed.

I think you are missing the point about green house effect. Cloud cover at night prevents black body radiation, thus keeping atmospheric temperatures warmer than a cloudless night.
"Clear as a bell and cold as hell" the saying goes.
While you are correct about clouds increasing albedo (amount of sunlight reflected back into space) you are neglecting the effect of cloud cover at retaining the heat that does penetrate that cloud cover.
Your explanation would suggest that Venus would be cooler because of albedo when it is not.

But my local nuke plant is famous because a worker coming into the plant set off alarms and was prevented from entering. That's correct. That's how the whole radon gas business got off the ground. His home was hot.
Nuke plants have to be in pretty pristine areas.

You can tell if there is a fog or temperature inversion, that keeps Radon from dissipating into the atmosphere, because you might not get out of the plant itself for an hour.
It does make it harder to get clean materials released. Things like testing turbine oil or transformer oil are frustrating, because you canot get a sample out and sent to a lab sometimes.
I am not saying some of the detectors are sensitive, but they can tell if you had a banana for breakfast when you get a whole body count.

Probably because he had behavioral issues, but nothing that would have prompted an MRI. This is not uncommon in low grade brain tumors, especially (but not exclusively) if affecting the frontal lobes. So I'm just guessing but this isn't particularly odd.

Probably because this is a brain injured kid who did a lot of this stuff as a minor, and they are trying to square away what of this is due to him having brain damage and how much he's going to be held criminally responsible for. Dealing with these cases is horrible: the young man has stuff wrong with him, and it isn't clear how much insight he has, and no one is well served by the usual media circus.
I mean, the news media are basically ugly viscious parasites who do not give a shit about truth or suffering, and the last thing you want is those shit hawks circling around a brain damaged young man and his family before the basic facts are sorted out.

Seems like most people at AoS had "old-fashioned" parents with old-school values and attitudes. But like I say, in cases where you have a brain injured minor involved in a crime (and he was apparently a minor while he was dong some of this stuff) they will get what facts they can get straight first. It's a nightmare to the parents here. You don't want to punish innocent people, and that's exactly what a media circus does. A bit of caution isn't going to harm anyone.
