AoSHQ Celebrates International Women's Wymynz Day

So International Women's Day (and you can always tell it's a rat bastard commie holiday because it starts with the word 'International') was yesterday, or last week, or some damn thing, and that's a holiday that we all celebrate here at the HQ. So without further ado...

79 I first learned of international women's day a few years ago while living in Los Angeles. A friend, who had grown up in a communist country, received flowers, so I asked if it was her birthday. She replied no, the flowers were from her husband for international women's day. I said I had never heard of it, and she responded that it was kind of like Mother's Day, only more inclusive because it celebrates all women not just women who are mothers. Commies don't celebrate mothers, of course, because they do not want to do anything to promote love and honor between parent and child. Your kids don't belong to you. They belong to the state.

And then SCOTUS will strike it down because it violates #2 and Heller.

Besides, Democrats couldn't get a watered down background check bill through immediately after Sandy Hook.

They're not going to try to ban guns through Congress. It's electoral suicide and they know it.

The larger point, though, is valid. Besides though, we all know that Republican Senators have this weird habit of letting bad legislation pass through cloture to vote against it later while preserving knowledge of that vote against the law itself but memory holed the one for cloture.

190 Remember no filibuster means only 50 votes will be needed to ban guns next time there's a Democrat in the white house.

Well, hopefully they'll restore it in a lame duck session. But either way, it would've been gone the next time the Dems are in charge.

The Democrats can save the filibuster. All they need is eight or nine Democrat Senators to vote for a fully qualified US Supreme Court Justice. Simple. Smart. Easy. So you know they will never do that.

Given the date, that sure didn't stop the manufacture or importation of small trucks. Might have hurt VW's sale of Transporter pickups, which you rarely see here.

But the import of Japanese mini-trucks was barely getting under way then, and their heyday was through the 1970's and early '80's. And they got around some of the duty issues by building them wholly or in part in the USA.

Things were ugly last time, and that wasn't because Bush didn't play nice. Since it seems that they're going try to to wreck things regardless of what we do, then 'playing by the rules' doesn't make sense here.

I'd like to live in a country where both parties play by the same fair rules, but since we know they're already going to break them, I don't see why we should just sit on our hands when we have the ball.

329 Allow me to revise and extend my remarks about the repeal failure and the real danger that lurks out there.

Medicaid expansion was given to the states for "free" for a limited number of years. Much like the annual ritual of raising the allowable rates of Medicare reimbursement, we will see the federal government on the hook for this expansion and its future growth forever unless the enabling legislation is repealed. The irony here is that Obamacare effectively banishes the poorest to the lowest rung of care also forever.

This was a band-aid that needed to be ripped off and instead, we're just letting the infection grow.

It was ugly and destructive. Now imagine Obama with a Democrat Congress and no filibuster. This afternoon, Trump will be again signing his own EOs to get rid of some of Obama's EOs which he did because there were constraints on him like the filibuster.

EOs are easy for a President to get rid of and Trump has been doing it since Day 1, just requires a new pen and phone. Legislation, as we have just seen with the Obamacare debacle, is a whole different thing.

Looks as if we are heading for the end of the filibuster so we'll see what the brave new world looks like.

354 I noticed after awhile, they stopped even mentioning it.

It was a really bad idea for all kinds of reasons, yeah. IIRC it wasn't ever mentioned in Voyager (though there, it'd be justifiable, both To Get Home and because there's less space-traffic), but pre-release marketing had the hinged nacelles having something to do with safer/cleaner warp. blah blah blah no one cared by then

If you go through TNG and look for dropped plot threads-- even if you limit it to fairly major-sounding ones-- ooh boy, there's a lot there.

Part of it IMO had to do with their script policy- at least for a while, they'd read unsolicited scripts-- but another part is that they were stuck in the episodic mindset, as opposed to the later (think LOST) serialized idea. Once syndication and videotapes really took off, there's more expectation for people to have seen and remember older plots. TNG really didn't do that kind of thing well. Best they managed were recurring characters and adversaries.

And there was also that writers' strike, which screwed things up a bunch fairly early on, but that was a temporary thing.

The short version is you would have to heat up a human to a million times the temperature at the core of the sun just to break apart the atoms. Then, the computer memory to store all the info of the X, Y, and Z coordinates of the atoms to put the human back together, if stored on the old floppy disks, would end up being a stack of disks 10,000 light years tall.

Good points and something I hadn't really thought through. I agree that they didn't do the serial thing very well...it seemed as though each episode was designed to be as standalone as possible. I could see transporting (or just plan materializing/assembling) basic elements and compounds, but living tissue? That's a lot harder. For a while, that's one thing I liked about Enterprise- the transporter was new and scary and didn't always work right, so they tried not to use it.

Sigh. Enterprise.

Anyway, considering who often we saw it mess up in horrifying ways (The Motionless Picture comes to mind), everyone who was at all concerned was labelled a crazy person and a Luddite.

389 Sure there were some nods to past episodes, but by and large it's like each episode tended to downplay the history of anything past a few episodes ago.

Another part is the legacy of The Original Series, which was a lot more episodic. Nowadays, binging or watching a couple episodes in a row is expected, but back then, not so much.

The whole idea of a metaplot and the show's "mythology" had been building for a while, but I place X-Files as influential here. Also Babylon 5, but X-Files was always more popular and better known.

Anyway, yeah. If you watch much TOS in a modern, condensed timeframe (as opposed to a week apart at best), it's striking how repetitive and disjointed it seems.
