There is something sad and era-ending about these scenes. Fighting ships seem to have hearts and minds, at least the romanticized version of them that lives in the hearts of the men who fought on them.

JMW Turner has always intrigued me. His scenes of the sea are best seen in person -- they don't have the impact on the small screen. But he also confuses me. This painting has me thinking that the sky is the subject, and the ship just happened to wander in to the scene...

5 Oh -- when the title said "tugged," it means "towed by a tug." Cool. You're right, the sky and sunset (I presume it's sunset) seem to be the focus more than the ship.

13 Nice choice. This is one of my favorite Turners. It's a nice example of how light, color and the viewer all contribute to mood. Many scholars consider him the first Modernist.

16 I really like this, and I think it definitely captures the melancholy you feel when you're watching your ship pull into dock for the last time.

I get how the sky looks like the subject, but I take that more as a way to convey that when you're assigned to a ship, that ship is your entire world...but when you're off of it, it sure seems awfully small in comparison to the larger whole. And that ship, which used to be your whole world, is going away permanently.

I spent the night on the USS Constellation with my son's cub scout troop. It was awful. We slept in the hammocks below deck. It was pouring down rain and the plastic covering the open windows was snapping in the wind all night. The hammocks were made for people who are about 5'6". I'm 6'4" and didn't sleep for one second. My then 8 year old loved it...

36 It's unclear whether this is a sunset or sunrise. Each are very old symbols with opposite meanings. Whichever you see is supposed to effect your interpretation of mood. If it's a sunset, then you're supposed to feel sadness and nostalgia for a glorious past passing away. If it's a sunrise, then the old is being replaced by the new. The steam-powered tugboat pulling the wind-powered ship reinforces this. The date also helps. Turner is painting this in 1839. The new modern world is about to begin.

Maybe it's been done - I don't watch movies enough to know - but I always wondered why a director of a disaster / invasion movie didn't have the Constitution coming out of dock, fully armed, her captain saying that, if they had to die, they were going down fighting.

Not all of them. Elizabeth Meyer is an heir to a large family fortune. She is also a sailor and developed a love for old sailing yachts. She started a school to both teach people about the craft of classic yacht building and restore old yachts.

She started with one of the J-boats, Endeavour, and the school has really grown. One of the major projects they are working on right now is the restoration/rebuild of the last of the great schooners from the 1800's, Coronet.

Visitors are also welcome at the school if you are ever in the neighborhood.

Hard to say, really.

My advice, for what it's worth, would be to just lay it out - "I'm too old* to play games. Is this going anywhere or not?" Not that his answer will necessarily be honest, but at least you've drawn a line in the sand.

I wonder if he painted the sky that way as it's farewell to the Temeraire? If the old war ships were deemed to have a personality and living quality to them, then they would understandably have a relationship with the elements-wind, rain, sun- that contribute to their journey.

Because the ship looks old and ghostly, I think the progenitor of the elements, the sky, is saying goodby to an old friend. One it didn't mind slapping around.

Sort of impossible to tell exactly what's going on without knowing the guy in question. Worst case scenario, he's got other logs on the fire so to speak. On the other end of the spectrum, he could just be shy and not feel like he has anything to talk about. Also dependent on how long you've been seeing each other. That situation seems a lot more worrisome if you've been together a year than if you only met last month.

94 First, today's painting. The sunset sky marks an end and the idea of 'ending' dominates this image. The Temeraire appears almost as a ghost but with enough detail to show the grace and craftsmanship of her builders. (Fascinating use of color more than lines to bring out those details.) The tug, spewing smoke, squat and dark and ugly against the grace of the dying vessel, is the one solid in the image. The rest: changing sky, day's end, the Temeraire, even the sailing vessel in the background, are all passing and ephemeral. It's an interesting and evocative contrast. Even though Turner's color choices aren't dark, he still conveys the an inevitable sadness to our world.

Second, I'm surprised Turner isn't better known. Look at the Wiki page which shows a number of his paintings over his career. They start out as rather typical for the mid to late 1700s. But he kept innovating. Over time you can see where he brought out more use of brilliant color, like the Luminists, to bring out details and later still, swirls of color that presages the Impressionists.

CBD, I'm sure you are correct. Seeing these works in person would be great. Thanks for more interesting art.

A lot of artists do, actually, especially in their late careers or during cultural transitions. Michelangelo's very late works are more Mannerist than Late Renaissance. Turner, Manet, Wright of Derby just to name a few off the top of my head.

Art history is an excellent way of tracking cultural evolution. In some cases, the only way.

If I may draw a parallel, The Vietnam Memorial. As big a war as that was, in many ways the memorial seems like a footnote to it. Not grand, not imposing, not calling attention to itself. It is at peace with its surroundings and you have to look for it to find it.
So it is with the painting of this ship. No fanfare. Its job is done. Yes, attention goes elsewhere when the Sheepdog is put down.

128 Yes, the sky is dramatic, but that's not the subject - it's merely setting a dramatic tone.

The subjects are a relatively detailed image of a steam tug, with an ethereal image of Temeraire behind it.

It's a bit ham handed and obvious, but that's not always a bad thing. The subject - the passing of one era into another - is rather cut and dry. And, I'm sure for those who were living it, a bit dramatic.

It is quite possible that in our lifetime we will see manned combat aircraft get phased out, in favor of unmanned drones. A similar painting will be appropriate...

The wife and I saw it in 2008 or 2009 (forget which) while on a dinner cruise. It was a bit creepy, just berthed with a few lights, like a ghost ship. It's still there, AFAIK.

As of last year it was still afloat. There are/were plans to restore it as a museum but the cost will probably be prohibitive - hundreds of millions. It has been costing $800,000/year just to keep it somewhat stabilized. There is good info on the various plans over the years in the WikiP article on the ship.

When it was designed and built there was a lot of controversy that as a monument, it wasn't "monumental"

But visiting in person, it is perfect.

It had been described as a gash in the Mall, and in a way, yes, in much the same way that Vietnam is a gash in American history. As you walk down the wall you go deeper into the Earth, and the sounds of the city around you get muffled. It is a church like quiet, and very, very respectful to all the names on that wall.

I first visited in the 80s when it was new. I saw people, families, standing in silence, hand placed on a name. I saw people doing rubbings. I saw items left in remembrance - medals, pictures. I saw a man standing with his son, he was pointing to names, and saying that they were his friends. Telling his son about when he was young.

It made me blubber. Eyes misting up now remembering it.

I suggested Barber's Adagio for Strings, and that is what I hear in my mind whenever I see a Turner painting. There is an unmistakable sadness about his paintings.

I'm well past 65 and have Medicare. Instead of the government plan I have a Medicare Advantage plan which has an optical-dental-hearing rider that costs $29 per month additional. So it is possible to get those coverages on Medicare. BTW my healthcare plans all my working life through my employer never had any dental-optical-hearing, so this is a first for me.

Hmm...go back in time to when Ryan first started to get this repeal effort off the ground really fast.

Phase 1 only has repeal elements. Not everything, but limited to what they think the parliamentarian will accept.

Phase 2 is in Tom Price's hands, of course.

Phase 3 still only contains repeal elements, but is targeted at things that the House thinks the Senate parliamentarian won't let through with Reconciliation.

Phase 4 is "replace".

I wonder how that would have played out.

$400, a "comparable" late model Lexus with a full tank of gas, a full tank in my car when it's returned and a "appearance enhancement treatment", which I assume is a car wash and interior cleaning.

Stored inside and only run on a dynamometer.

Sounds good to me.

Yep. Just last week Cornyn was saying he was confident that the Senate would pass a bill if the House got their through and the two bills would go to committee for reconciliation. But the reality is it didn't and that door is closed so they have to use legislation or wait until the next budget year or keep 2017 open and not do any of the rest of Trump's agenda.

Three Senators in the Senate already said they wouldn't sign the current bill. Cruz, Lee, and Paul.

So unless he tailors the legislation in the beginning to accommodate their concerns, what is the point in sending legislation to the Senate.

Because the Senate is allowed to offer amendments to the bill and then it goes to conference. Tailoring the bill was more about Senate rules for reconciliation to even happen and prevent a filibuster.

Umm...the Senate doesn't have to take it as is and vote up or down. They can add their own amendments and change whatever language.

It's Ryan's job to get legislation through and send it to the Senate. That's all he can do, and all he should worry about. Differences of opinion will arise between the two chambers, which is why there are two chambers.

The welcome baskets included a voter registration packet.

Supposedly it was caught and removed before the baskets were disbursed, but the Dem who did this doesn't understand what all the fuss is about.

What is more incredulous is that Nebraska, like a lot of states , requires zero proof of citizenship when registering to vote. And only find voter fraud if someone states on say, a jury duty slip that they are not a citizen, after their name was picked up for jury duty from voter rolls.

Yes, I am aware of that. But we do not appear to have normal functioning legislative chambers. We have hard line splits between individuals that are exacerbated by the current state the country is in after 8 years of Obama and 8 years of moderate/liberal lite of George Bush. Whatever the Senate does to revamp the legislation to where Cruz, et al will vote for it, will make it intolerable to the moderate/liberal factions of the Rep. in the house.

I would think it would make more sense to at least have the Senate conservatives, who are more hard line at this point than the moderates, at least on board with legislation coming their way.

We have hard line splits between individuals that are exacerbated by the current state the country is in after 8 years of Obama and 8 years of moderate/liberal lite of George Bush. Whatever the Senate does to revamp the legislation to where Cruz, et al will vote for it, will make it intolerable to the moderate/liberal factions of the Rep. in the house.

I would think it would make more sense to at least have the Senate conservatives, who are more hard line at this point than the moderates, at least on board with legislation coming their way.

If you swerve to avoid stuff falling out of a trailer (for example), but hit a motorcyclist, the law takes into account the split-second nature of that event. The car, though-- does it prioritize? That has to programmed in. (My favorite version of this scenario is the car targeting cyclists as a vigilante, but that's me being me.)

And then there's insurance, and pedestrians, or my actual favorite, the self-driving cars at the 4-way stop where none went first. (I *think* that was an actual event, but based on the deference/politeness/safety factors, I can total see it happening.)

The old naval base in Portsmouth, RI was the site of the PT boat training center during WWI and Goat Island in Newport was the home for torpedo development dating back to the mid-1800s. Gould Island, in the middle of Narragansett Bay was the expanded home of the torpedo base and to this day they are still picking ordinance out of the Bay from testing during WWII.

Here's my suspicion: to eliminate a lot of these scenarios - essentially, the need to program responses to unpredictable human behavior - they will work with lawmakers to insist on 100% driverless cars. It's a lot easier to program a car to behave around similarly programmed vehicles vs. humans. And they'll claim that it is for our own safety that they're relieving us of the ability to control our own cars.

I saw 'Solace" last night.

The script was supposedly the one they were going to use as a sequel to "Seven".

I guess it got rewritten a bit but you can still see the bones of "Seven" beneath it's plot mechanics.

Lots of great actors doing very good acting, but it went straight to blu-ray and on-demand streaming...

So, how is it?

Well, it's one of those psychic helps out police to capture a serial killer dealios.

I suppose if we match parts to "Seven"

Jeffery Dean Morgan is Morgan Freeman.
Abbie Cornish is Brad Pitt
Colin Farrell is John Doe
Antony Hopkins is the psychic.

I'm not going to discuss plot very much cuz it would get spoilery very quickly.

I'll just say that 'Solace" while very good at cranking up tension in various scenes, it doesn't reach the levels of suffocating dread that "Seven" achieved mostly do to the nature of the killings and motivation.

This movie wants to establish ambivalence about the killer and his killings and in that. i'm sure it's political in that way, but fortunately there really isn't an author comes from behind the scenes to give you a lecture moment. it's well enough written and filmed that while the context is clear, we aren't beat over the heads with it.

So, great acting, strong if not horrifying plot, well and efficiently directed, Hollywood leaning politics

why not a theatrical release?

Two reasons I think:

1) The horror comes mostly from the disturbing and sometimes incoherent visions of the psychic.
But, they're not real in the sense of terrible things actually happening at that moment.

It's a neat conceit in some scenes but they go to that well too often.

2) There's a scene -and you'll know it when you see it- that starts out conforming to all the SJW-posturing of Hollywood but then severely undercuts it in a very much non-politically-correct way.

It may be this scene alone which got it cut from general release. Who knows?

in and of itself, "Solace" is a fine if not great movie.

It would've made a lousy follow up to the dreadfest of "Seven"-

but in and of itself it's quite good.

Pilots' certifications haven't really changed, they still have to know how to fly a plane, navigate, follow emergency procedures, stuff like that. There are cases where the autopilot input is bad, but there are also cases where the pilots are completely disoriented and just letting the autopilot take over is the right choice. Automation or not, some pilots in some situations will just CFIT to double down on a mistake.

Like how Die Hard is based on a book, which itself was a sequel to an earlier book (which was made into a Frank Sinatra movie). Die Hard 2 is based on a different book by a different author. Die Hard 3 was originally a Lethal Weapon script. Die Hard 4 is based on a Wired article.

I ask because I really see us headed that way with cars. Toyota had billion dollar lawsuits against it because people didn't know how to put an automatic in neutral when the engine was revving.*

I would not be too surprised.

Auto mechanics are unable to diagnose any problem these days without prompting from the ECM(s) on board the cars.

From 250 miles away, I diagnosed the source of a battery charging problem in my wife's car, which had made TWO trips to the dealer, with no resolution. I was furious, as it had left my wife stranded two times.

I called the dealership and asked specifically what they had done, and not done.

I looked through the service bulletins and found an EXACT description of the problem.

They had not updated ECM software which was known to cause this problem.

The service manager was a young woman, to whom I read the riot act and demanded compensation for the 'services' which they had previously charged (including, of course, a new battery).

Poor woman was fairly wordless, having no explanation except the failure of her service department.

I learned that when fancy bells and whistles break, it costs a lot. Now, it's even more. So I tend to purchase vehicles without cameras, without bluetooth, without "connnectivity" and without GPS. So when they break, they are somewhat less costly to fix.

Our brilliant school district did that with central controls of HVAC and clocks for 20+ schools. Claimed to be high-tech (and even I knew that was ridiculous) and will save the taxpayers money (even more ridiculous)! Nothing ever worked and nobody knew what time it was inside a school (ours went by the principal's watch) and the temperatures in the classrooms were unhealthy.

It's really not true. Trump has been signing all kinds of EOs lately rolling back the EOs that Obama signed specifically because he couldn't get stuff through Congress during his second term. Obama complained about it and then announced that he was going to the Pen and Phone.

The problem with that route is anything done under and EO can also be rolled back under EOs.

Liberals have become a lot more militant starting mostly under Reid and Republicans have tried to cling to the way things always worked but that appears to be changing. If they filibuster Gorsuch then the Republicans have no choice but to go nuclear.

Lindsey Graham has talked up nuking the filibuster (with a grand 4 years left in his current term, no less) for Gorsuch.

That's one advantage of having your squishy side insist on being deferential to the president for cabinet/SCOTUS picks. When you've got a president who's nominating individuals far to the right of these senators, the senators' first inclination is to say yes.

Deference to POTUS on picks seems very strong with people like McCain and Graham.

I believe that Congressional Republicans would welcome a conservative SCOTUS because that court could do all the dirty work that voters insist the senators do.

I don't think as little of the GOPe as many here do, but I don't think particularly highly of them either. I think that they may try to pressure Trump into a Kennedy like pick, but they'd never insist on another hardcore progressive. They have to worry about voters back home, remember?

Still leaves the problem of upkeep of ship as a museum. Need really deep pockets for that. Failure could result in what happened to USS Cabot when she was brought back from the Spanish Navy to become a museum ship.

True, but again it's a lot easier on her side of the aisle because her caucus is almost universally liberal. Not only does it make it easier for her to get them to fall in line on legislation but she also controls the spigot for election dollars.

House Republicans are much more diverse as we have just seen and there are numerous outside groups that fund different factions.

I believe they also have recoil absorption mechanisms built in to the turrets.( i.e. those heavy barrels move something like four feet in recoil)

Willing to tempt with electoral disaster for a permanent policy gain.

If the ACA were good policy, then the defeat would have been temporary, but it was bad policy, so Democrats continue to pay for it.

If the repeal/replace legislation was good policy, then Ryan should be willing to do whatever it takes to get it passed because any negative effects politically from the passage will be evened out by the good effects of the policy.

What do you do with a group that won't compromise? As someone who has spent my life negotiating deals I can tell you that there are times when you run into people who will not budge on any position and it is impossible to get a deal.

38 Democrats voted against Obamacare. Ryan has a much smaller room for losing votes and the people who went against it were never going to support it. They wanted a clean repeal or nothing as we just saw from Mo Brooks.

The HFC had freed up its members to vote as they wished.

They just needed to flip a few of them. That could have been done with committee assignments.

But, the moderates of the party hated the bill too. Because it didn't appeal to anyone.

The last whip count I saw was somewhere around 180 for the bill. That's not just the HFC opposing it.

Maybe the bill was...bad...?

And they were also threatened by Americans for Prosperity (Koch Brothers) who said they would not only not support any member who voted for it they would work to primary them.

The last whip count you saw included concessions to the FC which pushed out moderates. Again, that's the problem with a big diverse group, you give in one area and you piss off others.

I don't know that the sky was the big deal, and maybe it was, but maybe rather it was the reflection of the sky in that shallow water where they were going to ditch the ghost. 619 imho it was Turner's style to treat sky, water, and the actual "object" as co-equal subjects. Rather than just depicting his nominal subject in a way that displayed it to the viewer, he wanted to create an immersive environment which would endow the viewer with a feeling of presence. Remember that his paintings are also huge; if you're in front of a real one you almost feel as if you could step into it. He may have been held back by the comparatively primitive technology of his day, but his ambition was to be a kind of IMAX.

It is indeed this painting (I just played the scene from DVD), and Q begins the conversation with Bond about "A grand old ship being ignominiously hauled away for scrap" and "The inevitable march of time" - both possible veiled references to Bond's age.

They then have a lively repartee about Bond (old) and Q (very young, and "Still having spots", i.e. acne).
