March 28, 1979 Three Mile Island Nuclear accident occurs.

At 4 a.m. on March 28, 1979, the worst accident in the history of the U.S. nuclear power industry begins when a pressure valve in the Unit-2 reactor at Three Mile Island fails to close. Cooling water, contaminated with radiation, drained from the open valve into adjoining buildings, and the core began to dangerously overheat

Men are women. Women are men. Some men don't have a gender. Some women don't have a gender. Now rivers are people. That's right, rivers are people. The ONT can't make this shit up. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Just days after New Zealand declared the Whanganui River a legal person, the world’s population of river people (not people who live on the river, but rivers who are people) tripled, when a court in India waved its judicial wand and transformed the Ganges and Yamuna rivers:

[T]he Rivers Ganga [Ganges] and Yamuna, all their tributaries, streams, every natural water flowing with flow continuously or intermittently of these rivers, are declared as juristic/legal persons/living entities having the status of a legal person with all corresponding rights, duties and liabilities of a living person ….

The United States of America and its refugees.

The United States has long been the global leader in resettling refugees, strictly defined as people forced to flee their home country to escape war, persecution or violence. Since October 2001, more than 895,000 refugees have settled here, typically after being referred by the United Nations and vetted by the State Department in a process that takes at least 18 months. (By comparison, a million or so legal immigrants arrive annually.)

Was it good for you?

A STUDY has shed light on the worst thing men can do in bed — and it seems women are united in hating this unattractive habit.
This new report, titled Do Women’s Orgasms Function as a Masculinity Achievement?, reveals some interesting insights into heterosexual relationships.
The paper explores how “masculine” men feel after making their partner orgasm, and reveals how men can hijack a woman’s big moment to inflate their own ego

Follow the money. The Teamsters vs. Government. The fight who controls CA pot distribution.

When Californian’s went to the polls this November to approve the legalization of marijuana for personal use, little did they realize it would morph into a battle between unions and business.

The state is now slated to begin distributing licenses to marijuana businesses on Jan 1, 2018. Therefore, the Golden State’s legislature is attempting to iron out discrepancies between the already existing medical marijuana rules and the approved ballot measure.

The crux of the disagreement between the Teamsters union and business groups is deciding who is in charge of pot distribution.

Somethings just go together. Bacon and eggs. Gin and tonic. Democrats and hypocrisy.

Democratic U.S. senators are considering denying Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch a floor vote by filibustering his nomination. Yet it was only a few months ago that Senate Democrats declared anything less than an up-or-down vote on a Supreme Court nominee a failure to perform the Senate’s constitutional duty.

Will these senators stay true to their word and allow a vote on Neil Gorsuch?

In the 1500s The Catholic Church involved in the art/pron debate.

I Modi (The Ways) is best known as The Sixteen Pleasures, an illustrated sex guide published by Marcantonio Raimondi in 1524. Based on paintings by Giulio Romano, The Sixteen Pleasures carries the proud boast of being the first work of pornography banned by the Catholic church. For his gross indecency, Raimondi was imprisoned by Pope Clement VII. All copies of the book were destroyed. Romano got away with it. And so began a long debate whether art and porn can ever be the same thing?

The "Boy Socialist of Oakland", Jack London. Jack London's political views and writing.

Jack London was no philosopher, nor did he aspire to be. In both fiction and nonfiction, he sought to observe the world around him closely and to describe what he observed accurately, concretely, and in detail. London’s devotion to close observation and to accurate description of the concrete informs his best fiction. In stories such as “To Build a Fire” and “War,” London shows us in detail the material world in which and of which we are. His observations of the material world also tell us about the psychological and emotional dimensions of his characters. The prophetic aspect of The Iron Heel is best understood as a result of the same materialistic habit of thought. By disciplined and relentless attention to detail, and a corresponding avoidance of intellectual abstractions, London could discern the shape of coming events. He needed neither a Christian God nor a Hegelian History to analyze the dynamics of his society.

There have been plenty of insane attempts to grant the Earth legal "rights". New Zealand has eclipsed them all by declaring a river to have the same legal rights as a human being. Yes, the Whanganui River is LITERALLY a person according to New Zealand.

65 Apologies for the wall-o-text, but the January 3 1961 SL-1 incident is flippin' fascinating and terrifying. No disrespect meant to MH in re: mentioning TMI.

500 milliseconds The central control rod withdrawal begins.
120 milliseconds The reactor goes critical when the control rods reaches 16.7 inches; rod continues to its full 20-inch extension.
0 seconds The power of the nuclear excursion peaks at 19,000 megawatts; the fuel plates begin to vaporize as temperatures hit 3,740 degrees Fahrenheit.
0.5 milliseconds The nuclear energy release ends; the center fuel elements and central control rod blade and shroud are ejected from the core; the water column above the core begins to accelerate upward.
34 milliseconds The water column rushes into the lid of the vessel; shield plugs are ejected from the lid at speeds of 85 feet per second; the vessel rises out of its sheath.
160 milliseconds The first shield plug hit the reactor room ceiling; two-thirds of the water inside the reactor is expelled and 5 percent of the fission products are released.
800 milliseconds The reactor vessel hits the ceiling.

I had one of those days yesterday
Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at March 28, 2017 10:06 PM (voOPb)

Will do, even if it turns into a series of days like it has been.

The only bright spot was a visit with a few friends to a karaoke place in OKC. It was small, the place was crowded, but people were there to sing and to listen...and I owned the place by the time we left. The bartenders asked me back. Pretty young ladies flirted with me.

Then, my stupid brain ruined it by telling me I'm just doing it for the attention. Like those Hollyweird idiots.

There are times I think my brain hates me, it that makes any sense.

Steam explosion. Yes, it wasn't like an atomic bomb, because those are designed to hold the fissile material together long enough for it to... fizz. In this case, it vaporized the cooling water and melted the fuel, but once it did that, the fuel was too dispersed to maintain a critical mass.

Still killed 3 people and blew about 1200 curies of radioactivity out into the Idaho night. There was some tension between the operating crew, so a murder-suicide or a prank gone wrong has always been one of the theories for the cause. If you're 'curie'ous, check out SL-1 on wikipedia or pick up Idaho Falls at the library.

"The bell housing pinned him," he says. "It came up through his groin. I found one testis up in the armpit. Now that gives you an idea about the kind of trauma these guys suffered in the initial explosion."

Posted by: No Such Luck at March 28, 2017 10:18 PM (JgB3d)

The fission pile didn't blow up like a bomb. The superheated steam though, did.

Put that same fission pile, uncontained, out on open ground, and it'd be a molten puddle of furiously radioactive metal, but it would not have exploded.

Put a few hundred gallons of water on top of that 3,000+ degree puddle of radiating slag though, and watch the instantaneous conversion of water, into a superheated, invisible yet insanely powerful, expanding gas.

By time the steam condenses back into a visible cloud, anything between the source and the cloud would have been reduced damn near to elements by the utterly hellish nature of uncontained live steam. Not to mention the radiation from that slag pile, as transmitted by said steam.

USN Snipes have all the knowledge as to live steam, as to USN Bubbleheads.

And back in the day, so did Railroad Engineers, when Steam Ruled the Rails.

Careful what you wish for. In my case I was crazy enough to do it. The sacrifice is intense, the focus is intense, and its all consuming. The best part is during a lot of it you get to work a normal job because a lot of time you have to. Unless you go superstar, you might make a living, but usually you are doing something to supplement it. One band I was in is I think is on their 17th album, and I think a few of them still have to have alternative sources of income. You either go starving musician, or a seriously busy never sleeping musician juggling a career and a job of some kind.

Playing/learning guitar on the other hand is a great thing to do for the spirit though. It can heal you. As a job though...its a crap shoot.

There are times with the shit I have been through I would say you aren't missing shit. lol

Should be fun.

Supposedly *all* of John Hughes' films of the 1980s, Sixteen Candles, Vacation, Ferris Bueller, and Weird Science, had soundtracks on LP that are now next to impossible to find (and if you *can* find them, they're mindbendingly expensive to acquire).

Take a little piece of adhesive tape, any type will do. Roll it up into a tight little cylinder, and then stick that into the eye of the mouse and just work it around. It'll pull all those little hairs out, and your mouse will then work nicely again.

Whenever I hear the left go on with "what about rape or incest?", my answer to them is "fine, but the aborted child would have to be turned over to prosecutors so that they can charge the men responsible for rape and/or incest".

They don't like that idea for some reason which means they must actually be pro-rape and pro-incest.

528 Incest between two adults shouldn't be grounds for an abortion. And abortion in the case of rape is something thats going to happen early in the pregnancy, preferably in the first few weeks.

Both are rare cases anyways. If they were the only conditions where abortion was allowed, I'd consider that a win compared to what we have now.

A Glorious Grace Slick track....

Others are absolutely fuckin timeless...

https://tinyurl.com/n5a9kdv

I'm sure it's been mentioned, I haven't perused the thread,.....but...a soundtrack can make an excellent film iconic .....or an excellent film ordinary.

The poignancy provided is so integral, for some films, that it's easily equal to script, director, acting...etc....

An aside.... that'd be a good thread/youtube channel.....

"Movies that'd been BETTER with a Better soundtrack"....

Other films....(The Usual Suspects).....the soundtrack is distinctly secondary.

541 Very late here, just got back home from bowling. Back in the mid eighties I was on my way home for Christmas. The company I was driving for had screwed me on my load home and I ran into an ice storm around Des Moines, IA, so I had to shut it down for the night. There was a nice little bar across the road from the truck stop so I went in to have a couple of beers.
It was Christmas Eve and there were only a couple of drivers and a very cute bartender in the bar. She had the tv on, and I think it was the Country Music Awards program on, but I'm not sure. It was all country music.
Any who, Reba comes out in this green satin, off the shoulder gown (back when she had really long hair) and sings "Sweet Dreams" acapella.
Cute little bartender comes over to me and asks "Can I get you a tissue?" and I say "Am I drooling?" She says yes, so I say sure and dab my moustache.
I would have died a happy man if Reba would have done no more than kiss me on the cheek.

There was one chick who had a mom that I suspected was a cougar, and that might have been before there was a term for it. The parents were divorced, and the chick lived with her mom, who I think was around 42-43 at the time, and I was maybe 20. I had heard...stories, about the mom liking to mess with her daughter's boyfriends. I didn't give it much thought because at my age at the time 42 was old, and yeah no way.

Thinking back on it, and how she was with me, the little shit she did, I could have most likely nailed it, and thinking now how she looked at 42, she looked damn good for 42. Also, I'm pretty sure she would have been more fun than her daughter. lol

602 There are several banned posters who are now posting under new names and IP addys. If that is what it takes to end the behavior that got them banned, why should anyone take notice?

615 How to spell things?

I have bits and pieces of about a dozen languages stuck scrambled in my head. My last stroke didn't help that all.

It all started with one small caption under a picture. Most of it was recognizable, you just had to look at the picture to see.

"Un char du combat, abandonee sans trace du combat.

I had to go back to the Library to get a French dictionary to understand what "sans" meant.

40 some years ago.

So I guess that is my one real talent. Not that I made anything about it.

Posted by: Tim in Illinois at March 29, 2017 05:24 AM (d76uN)

There are about three acronyms that I still cannot figure-out.

618 I have seen that issue about the disparity in women's prices and men's before. The reason is simple, women are more willing to pay higher prices so the merchants hit them. If they quit buying shit for a while the prices will go down.

631 I also hang those Christmas Lights for me. I live for the compliments.

When I should be giving Glory to God, I work my ass off because my neighbors honk, wave and say "Thank You".

I have not confessed that, yet.

It has been over ten years of self-indulgent showcasing and I can finally admit that to The Horde.

632 I admit that because my neighbor killed himself over the Holidays.

He was a great guy, too. The cancer finally got to his brain and he shot himself.

I was not there for him because of the neck injury I had since September.

I certainly don't feel like it is my fault, but I need to confess "things".

Having humility and being humbled are two different things.

644 My sinuses are acting up this morning, I blame Trump for signing that bill yesterday voiding some environmental rules. It looks hazy outside, must be all those coal plants starting up...Of course coal burning power plants here in NYS are banned, only one left that I know of....Now some of our power comes from Quebec, a hell of lot of power poles between Quebec and my area, what can go wrong. There is PA gas, but that's considered evil by the environments. Proposal to build new gas pipelines is fought by the greenies to the bitter end.

Absolutely true. Back in my younger, pre-pregnancy days, I did the same thing. Women's jeans, $79. Boy's jeans, $15 and they were the right length. Also, I have no butt to speak of, and boy's jeans aren't designed to accentuate that particular attribute.
