Norman Borlaug: The Greatest Man You've Never Heard Of

Feeding the world is much easier because of this man, and he represents pretty much everything the agricultural neo-luddites on the Left despise. Norman Borlaug: A Man For All Seasons is a short description of his career, which spanned 50 years and cannot possibly be more impressive. And like a true scientist, he had an open mind, and saw the possibilities of the burgeoning recombinant DNA technology.

With the world’s population continuing to increase, the need for additional agricultural production remains, and in his later years Norman turned his efforts to ensure the success of this century’s equivalent of the Green Revolution -- the application of modern genetic engineering (also known as “genetic modification,” or GM) to agriculture. As Norman and other plant scientists realized, the use of the term “genetic modification” to apply only to the newest genetic techniques is an unfortunate misnomer, because plant scientists had been using crude and laborious techniques to obtain new genetic variants of wheat, corn and other crops for centuries. Products now in development with genetic engineering techniques offer the possibility of even higher yields, lower inputs of agricultural chemicals and water, enhanced nutrition, and even plant-derived, orally active vaccines.

No hysterical political stance, no hyperventilating about peak this and peak that and WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE! Just a fanatical focus on the job at hand...to feed the starving. And he did it.

And he did it in part because he understood better than most what science is;

“It is easy to forget that science offers more than a body of knowledge and a process for adding new knowledge. It tells us not only what we know but what we don’t know. It identifies areas of uncertainty and offers an estimate of how great and how critical that uncertainty is likely to be.”

He knew what he didn't know. And that is something that our insular, good-ole-boys-club of climate scientists would do well to understand.

Commie cocksuckers hate Borlaug because he single-handedly blunted their favorite weapon to exterminate recalcitrant populations. Famine and the withholding of food supplies is a powerful tool that's been used by the majority of communist/socialist regimes to control the people at large.

Also, his work exposed the lie that famine is entirely the result of weather, or blight or natural processes. Famine is in fact, almost exclusively caused by mankind manipulating the markets and production processes of food.

And the list goes endlessly into grains, vegetables, fruits, livestock and more.

All those yoga moms think their yogurt is all "natural", eh? Let's see the genetic birth certificate on those cultures, shall we?

The average SJW food warrior, would die of starvation if presented with truly natural fare.

Oh, and they'd also have to learn how to kill, dress and cook a few things now, wouldn't they.

I can cite chapter and verse how much Ag has changed in the last 30 years.
Improved irrigation and fertilizer applications, weed abatement, improved yields from better seed, we field pack now instead of packing in a shed, sanitation has improved, vacuum cooling.
I am stating from memory what yields were 30 years ago vs today, (I may be wrong)
Cartons per acre of broccoli were 150 cartons per acre in 1980 now they are 350 per acre. This is due to better seed and improved irrigation methods(drip tape), pest control and fertilizer(introduced through irrigation).

174 "He knew what he didn't know. And that is something that our insular,
good-ole-boys-club of climate scientists would do well to understand."

Howso? Borlaug's goal was to feed people. The climate scientists' goal is to accumulate funding, status, and power. Accordingly, anything that they don't know is simply either wrong, or confirms - however roundaboutly - exactly what they've already said. Either way, it doesn't matter to them.

The Romans. I read an article that Roman sanitation worked great for getting the poo out of the city... but then the poo would just get trucked into the local farms, infecting the produce with the parasites to end up back on the dinner table a few weeks later.

Yay organic!!

As a result, the Romans in the city were just as plagued with nasty as the peons out in the countryside, if not worse off.

And on gas, back in the 80s in Brazil, the gas stations smelled sweet - a distinctive aroma not like such facilities all around the world usually have. Thanks to the cane-based alcohol they used in their gasohol.

Haven't kept up on whether Brazil still has that stupid program (though it was far less economically wasteful then ours, owing to the huge "installed base" of sugar cane production, and the lack of domestic oil deposits known/reachable at that time). Thought the giants and super-giants they found in the Atlantic had made Brazil oil self-sufficient.

Did not notice any significant performance improvement, although the highway mileage was the best I've ever seen, 24 mpg, but the normal highway mileage is about 22-23 mpg, so the hoped for cost benefit did not work out. Interesting though that I think the next tank of premium ethanol ran around 22-23 mpg as opposed to the usual in town 19-20.

339 I have proposed the Borlaug Scale. It is a scale from 0 to 10 that measures a person's contribution to human life. To calculate a person's score, write down the number of human lives a person has preserved, then count the number of digits. Preserve one to nine lives, your score is 1. Preserve 400 lives, your score is 3. I believe Norman Borlaug's score would be 10. Groups might share a score by dividing the number of beneficiaries by the group size. Curiously, every woman who has born children has a score of 1 (or more!).

yeah that is an old myth. not true in the least. It is true there is no free energy. But ethanol gets its energy from the sun. So did oil, more or less, long ago. But it has to be drilled up and refined and transported as well. it is a little more efficient to use oil, especially if prices are low.

I've dealth with several vehicles that had 100K miles and no ethanol problems ever. Cars seem to burn much cleaner now actually, but not sure if the is the ethanol or the electron ignition or whatever.

I bought my first 10 gallons of ethanol free last week thanks to someone here posting that link. For small engines like chainsaws it seems they have not transitioned and it makes a big difference. Boats as well maybe. My riding lawnmowers never had a problem using the ethanol though.

Small farms seem important to me ... not sure if ethanol will remain the best way to keep corn prices up. Grains are a major export so it helps our tradew imbalance if China pays $4 instead of $2.75. Now that we broke the back of OPEC, maybe we can keep oil down around $40/brl.

As a soph at AHS I dated Anita Wellhausen . Visited her one Sat night when a rather raucous party for The Rockefeller Foundation was underway . I ended up tending bar in their kitchen and mixed some pretty stiff drinks for the patrons .
