I Mostly Quit Consuming News and I'm So Much Happier and More Productive [Warden]

Donald Trump's ascendency had the happy effect of helping me let go of any obligation to defend him as a nominee. His presidency--and the media's hysterical reaction to every single thing he says, does or tweets--has allowed me to reduce my consumption of news by at least 90% and I've never felt better.

The media culture is quite literally insane. I'm not just talking about print and television new. I mean all of it, including the stuff you and I use--Twitter, Facebook, blogs, comment sections, etc...

We've been heading in this direction for awhile. As ace has noted previously, the medium is the message. Most of today's media is clickbaiting, emotion-driven nonsense, as it must be. A medium that reduces attention span and encourages grazing across multiple tabs demands it. And somewhere along the line someone figured out that nothing drives clicks and views like outrage.

I think people have always loved running their mouths about things they know nothing about. The difference between today and before the rise of social media is that they didn't have a ready audience. You can only rant to your neighbors, coworkers and the barber so much in a given week.

Now those same louts do have an audience, and a relatively large one at that--one that rewards them for their outbursts and calls them wise, brave and inspiring. Nothing builds social capital like broadcasting the "right" opinions loudly, emotionally, and frequently.

President Trump didn't cause any of this, but he is a product of the culture and he's acted as an accelerant to the generally dysfunctional state of mass communications. It goes without saying that the press hates him unreservedly and with religious fervor.

It's also no secret that the press is filled with low-IQ, throne sniffing propagandists who are entirely incapable of earning a living through more respectable means. With their constant baiting, framing, double standards, deceptive edits and lies of both commission and omission, they have slowly but steadily lost the trust of most of their viewership. We've been watching it right here on this blog since the 2004 disgrace of Dan Rather.

But the ratcheting intensity driven by their Trump hating pathology has created something new and awful--a general feeling of paranoia, anger and fear that permeates our daily living.

And because Trump has a cunning and instinctive understanding of this circus-like atmosphere, he also adds to the confusion with his own deceit and off-the-wall behavior.

Don't get me wrong-- I find Donald Trump's smashing of DC norms to be mostly a positive development. But the man, taken as a whole and combined with underhanded maneuvering of his media antagonists has helped create an atmosphere where the truth is dream-like and elusive.

Frankly, it's exhausting to try to keep up. Every day and multiple times within is some new outrage. He gaslights them, they gaslight us. Everyone reacts without thinking at full volume and then we're on to the next thing before anything is inspected, pondered, and resolved.

I used to feel it was some sort of moral and patriotic obligation to stay on top of current affairs. No longer. I have neither the time nor the inclination to sift through miles of sewage in order to find some tiny, useful nugget of information. It's bad for my mental and spiritual health which, in turn, is bad for my family. And I value them--and myself-- far more than Being Right About Everything or whipping out some hard earned fact in order to TOTALY PWN an opponent on Twitter.

It hit me a few weeks ago that very little of what I've been consuming is real. It's like a crazy funhouse filled with distorted mirrors and spooky, upsetting sound effects. So, I thought, why enter? No one is making me and there's a perfectly good reality to enjoy elsewhere. Hadn't I spent most of my life prior to this bizarre age we're living through doing exactly that?

I took a long weekend to be with my kids over Spring Break last week and hardly even looked at the internet except to drop a post onto Ace of Spades. I threw a football with my kids at the park, took them to laser tag, cooked them breakfast and lunch every day and got some yard work done in balmy 70 degree weather.

I also spent time with my wife, played some video games, and stuck my nose in a book for a few hours each day.

It was wonderful. Peace and quiet is good for both the soul and the intellect. It gives you time to consider things deeply rather than respond primitively and by rote to information.

The less media I consume, the more time I have, allowing me to get back to being the bookworm I'd been for the first 30 or so years of my life.

It's easy to get trapped the way I was and the way many of you are. New media is sneaky. It allows you feel smart while actually making you stupid. We have more information at our disposal today than ever, but it's a mile wide and about an inch deep online or on TV. It encourages a hunter/gatherer mentality that ultimately causes you to lose your ability to deeply focus on a task. Reading reverses that process. I'm already seeing my attention span grow again.

In the last week of browsed at least parts of Mere Christianity by CS Lewis, Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance, A Pinch of Salt by Theodore Dalyrimple and The End of Average by Todd Rose. These are four thoughtful books filled with interesting ideas by men who are far smarter and insightful than the television personalities yelling inanities at you on TV as they try to manipulate your opinion to better accommodate the world they wish for themselves.

I'm here to tell you that I'm not going back. The more I scale back my media consumption, the more centered and in touch I become with the real world. I'm done chasing illusions. The big secret of new media is that it cons you even when you know it's all a big con. Life is too short and precious to be wasted on carnival barkers and grifters.

***EDIT***

Bonus trollish thought: If you want to drive a left wing acquaintance mad, tell him that you don't bother to watch news (even if you do) because they're all just liars.

Follow up by responding to every argument he tries to make with, "Ehhhh, buncha liars."

4 I recently came back from a month in England. (In case anyone may have noticed my absence from commenting here.) During that entire time, I never once looked at the Internet or perceived any news in any format.

I barely even noticed what I was "missing."

5 Good on you, OB.

I have to agree and add that the election of the God Emperor of the Golden Scalpweasel took a load off my mind.

I can just relax and let Trump handle things. If Hillary would been dragged across the goal posts, I'd be a lot more stressed.

Managing stress is a big part of happiness in life. I have my domestic issues but the wife is good at helping me focus on what I should worry about and what I shouldn't put off worrying about until I have to. And I do the same for her.

I'm reading more and I'm happier. Now I just need to get back into writing.

Nah, I'm back.

It was pretty great. I was there for "mysterious reasons."

On the last hour of my last day, the last thing I did in England was stand on the stairs underneath Westminster Bridge, admiring the view, thinking uplifting thoughts.

72 hours later, after I was back home, the Muslim terrorist knocked the guy from Utah off the bridge and he landed on the exact spot, to the inch, where I had been standing, where he then died.

Sobering, to say the least.

Most of it is flat out wrong either because the journalist/media owner has an agenda or because the people they talk to do. In my areas of expertise, I know these guys are fools and don't seem to care that their idiocy is on full display. I've also found tons of great content online that is informative and enriching. 49 I've been consciously cutting down on news channels, news sites, news in general, FB, was on Twitter for 5 minutes 5 years ago and that was enough, and I'm happier and more centered, too. I still graze a bit, for the headlines, sometimes some medical research that interest me, and when I'm done, I log off and put away the phone/tablet/computer. Face down, away from me. It's made a big difference. The internet is not reality, and as hard as "real life" or "meat space" is, it at least has gravity and stuff. Soon you'll see names pop up and you will have no idea who is being discussed. Last week Rush mentioned Gloria Borger and her appearance. I had seen her name before, but had no idea what she looked like. So I peeked via duckduckgo. I see names referenced here that I have no idea who the people are and my curiosity is not piqued enough to find out such as Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham, and Tavis Smiley.

77 So, if 40% of colleges saw a drop in foreign student applications since Trump's election, 34% saw a raise, and 26% saw no significant change, how much did the total percentage of applicants drop?

That's right, boys and girls: 40%

Trump is a menace! Also, math is hard.

79 Agree that it's one big shit sandwich at the Media restaurant these days. I guess you have choose your media like you would the other things you consume that are important to you and try to filter out the crap as best you can. If I'm looking for a strategic view of what's going on, anything by Victor David Hanson is pure gold Jerry (obligatory Seinfeld reference). If I feel like I want to put on the TV, Tucker Carlson is doing some nice work right now on his show. You get the drift - choose wisely because there's really a 1000 Rachel Maddow induced finger nails screeching on chalk boards out there right now like we've never seen. One of these days someone's going to come out with an intelligent show that doesn't pit a panel of asshats against each other, but rather offers digestible and thoughtful commentary on the issues of the day. Ahhh, who am I kidding, those days are gone (for TV at least).

84 The problem with this is as Jefferson said " A properly functioning democracy relies on an informed populace". I agree with this and I think liberals and the media do as well which is why they work so hard to confuse everyone with bullshit. Liberal policies only "work" if people lie about the results.

I'm happier when I am informed about what's happening rather than just watching it and scratching my balls and asking wut happened? I agree, it's getting harder to know what's real and what's fake but this has also been going on for a long, long time.

88 Good for you, I've done the same, results are identical.

Several weeks ago I gave up on twitter, just stopped logging in and deleted the app from my phone. Likewise FB.

I do visit ACE HQ, Instapundit, etc. from time to time, but studiously ignore the stuff that is over the top and targeted for outrage.

Like you I've been reading more, watching some cool shows (Taboo w/Tom Hardy was wonderful), and spending more time on my hobbies of woodworking (turning and fine crafts/cabinetry), guitar playing, and exercise. Oh, and more time hanging with the family.

I took a long weekend a couple of weeks ago to visit a recently retired buddy and his wife in FLA. Didn't go on the interwebs even once.

As you say, very relaxing and, dare I say, cleansing. Highly recommended.

93 Interesting observations, Warden, but in some ways I take a different view. In my workplace day-to-day life I am constantly surrounded by insanity. I probably shake my head and mutter to myself, "That's insane!" 8 to 10 times a day at work.

I come here to escape that. The comments section here (not always, but largely) offers a place of respite where I can let the insanity slide away for a while. There are thoughts and topics here that I can opine on that I have to stay away from at work. Sometimes, though, I have to remind myself to step away from the keyboard when I start getting too caught up in a given topic.

That was two weeks ago.

Now, I watch a couple of hours of FNC during the day and, at night, I watch Netflix exclusively.

In these past two weeks I've watched several movies and several new series that, with cable, I never seemed to find the time to enjoy. (BTW, Schitt's Creek is a must-watch. Catherine O'Hara is a genius.)

Guess what? I'm less outragey now. Less annoyed More patient.

I'm not so sure now that I'll have cable put in my room at all. When I move back into my own place, I might not add it there, either.

175 I wanted Trump from the jump. I supported him and no one was more surprised that he won. I have now cut out all MSM news, the brand new 60" ultra HD tv is now a computer monitor or gaming screen. I drop by here once or twice a day to make sure nothing important is going on, but other than that I'm done. My family is fractured from this election, no one is speaking to anyone, but I'm taking a class in watercolor painting, just finished a biography of the Bronte sisters that I have been putting off and I am remodeling the house. I no longer care, unless the Alien lands in my front yard, I don't care what DC does. It's in Trumps hands now.

Posted by: Abby at March 27, 2017 06:22 PM (HBU7W)

176 You pretty much took the words out of my mouth Warden. I've been a political junkie for a long time - since Clinton's election pretty much - but mainly because I was studying the Left's descent into open fascism / totalitarianism. They/we have now arrived at their goal IMO and I fear that we're only going through the motions of a dying Republic. Hell, even back in toga days I'm sure no one could mark the exact day that the Roman Republic fell.

I feel that watching this process happen is unhealthy for me since there's nothing I can do (nothing peaceful that is and I haven't arrived at the non-peaceful stage yet, if ever, mainly due to the thing that the Left reviles so much, which is my Faith. Little do they know how many of them will be spared because of that which they try so hard to undermine and destroy. But I digress).

I keep abreast by reading this site and one or two others and that's about it. TV is totally out - even Tucker Carlson - whom I love but still can't stand to watch the idiocy that he has to deal with. (Also because I can't afford to keep buying new TV's from my habit of wanting to punch right thru the screen and launch one of these Leftists into orbit).

And honestly, I feel a little better not going into the sewer on a daily basis. I've come to the conclusion that November 8th was a case of divine intervention and if it was so then He won't allow His Will to be undone so easily. At least not by the likes of the worms that call themselves journalists these days.

Ramble mode off.

206 LPs are pressed in different plants, at different times. Sometimes, using different Mastering.

Any big name title will be pressed at numerous plants for regional distribution. Some plants are known for better quality in their product.
These details will be encoded in the Matrices or Stamping on the Record.

In the case of LZ II - The second Pressings were done using a different Mastering than the first.
The Mastering for that one was done by Robert Ludwig. These will have the initials 'RL' in the DeadWax (inner groove area).
Collectors will pay silly prices for a clean RL Copy.

Stepson's latest girlfriend broke up with him. Husband and I were discussing it. He said, "He hasnt taken care of himself. Hes not going to be seen as a good provider." And its true. He doesnt have a good running car. He has a job so theres that. I guess she had the place rented in her name so sh's given him 30 days to move. Hes sleeping in his car for now. He made some bad choices as a young adult that he is still dealing with. At least he's not racking up college debt and seems to be getting a bit smarter about life. We sometimes dont realize what is really important in life.

Yes, No, Sometimes, Maybe...all Labels did it differently.
Usually the Date will be on the back of the cover and the labels. Not on the wax itself.

But, repressings don't always have the 'new' dates on them. You need to look up the matrix Code to see if it is a 1st or any of the many subsequent re-presings.

263 But the ratcheting intensity driven by their Trump hating pathology has created something new and awful--a general feeling of paranoia, anger and fear that permeates our daily living

------------------------------------------------

LOL...you need to read some history.

Sorry, but this "oh my god" we are living in some new world that has never been seen before is just wrong. Yes the world moves faster I suppose, information comes in fast and processing times shorten, but fear and paranoia has been around since the dawn of recorded history.

Yes we are living in dangerous times, but it has more to do with one major political movement that has convinced itself that it must breakdown the nation state and other historical traditions in order to bring about "paradise". A paradise they cannot define, but no matter. That has nothing to do with our modern world in general, but because we allowed that group to take over academia, entertainment, and other internals of our civilization and gain lots of converts.

What you are saying is a pox on both houses, and then lets all go hide from this in a monastery. That won't stop the Vikings from finding you!

May I suggest reading about Alfred the Great. It brings me peace and mental happiness. Our civilization has faced all this before numerous times, and brave non-monastic people came along and saved it for future generations.
