Boatmen On The Missouri
George Caleb Bingham

This is an interesting and amusing painting, although nobody would argue for its inclusion among the greats. So why did I choose it? Well, in addition to it being nice to look at, it was donated to the De Young Museum Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd, the third generation of a famous family of fascist oppressors.

It's easy for the Left to demonize wealth, but here is a very nice example of what it can do. And while I have no need to assure you of this, I will, because it needs repeating: the progressive canard that government is necessary for the support of the arts is just that; a lie, perpetrated on the American public. I will take privately funded art any day of the week over the work product of the current crop of lazy, self-indulgent, narcissistic, talentless drones whose only skill is sticking a thumb in the eye of Western culture.

So, reading Sandburg's biography of Lincoln, and I'm right at the end of Volume 3. The Civil War is kicking in and, to very little surprise, the battles are not getting huge descriptions.

And yet, the book is whetting my appetite for more.

So, recommendations for a book on a military history of the Civil War?

I swear.

That's the one thing that bothers me most about D.C.. The legislature is, in several key ways, the single most powerful branch of the three, but it currently refuses to even accept the idea of that fact.

70 I find Bingham's figures to be a bit stiff, not bad, just not animated. But I love the detail in the clothing, buildings, boats and other items. And his color use is gorgeous (look at some of his skies) and appropriate (look at the wooden boat, stone and brick in buildings, and the color used in peoples' clothing). The boat in today's painting is detailed enough that I feel I could see how it was assembled if I looked long enough. As CBD said, Bingham's work may not be great art but it is interesting and enjoyable.

BTW CBD, I got one of the Carl Larrson Kindle books after last week's example. Page after page of very pleasant paintings that really capture the feel of comfortable (not lavish) family life in Scandinavia. It is thoroughly enjoyable Thanks for introducing me to Larrson the artist.

We were in Sioux City this weekend, and one of the bridges has a flood gauge on it. It was currently at 4.5 meters, so nowhere near flood stage, but that is still a LOT of water. The I-80 bridge between Nebraska and Iowa is insanely high for a reason.

It's not a Civil War history as such, but Tony Horowitz' Confederates in the Attic is another book I liked. Horowitz, a (spit!) journalist, is inspired to rekindle his childhood fascination with the Late Unpleasantness when a documentary is being shot near his property. He enters the world of reenactors, does a slam-bang battlefield "Civil Wargasm" tour with a hardcore reenactor named Robert Lee Hodges and then tours parts of the South himself, trying to see how far the War remains in the psyche.

Along the way, of course, he runs into racism, PC nonsense and deliberate public school ignorance - and all of this before the dog-eating crackhead poisoned race relations beyond repair.

An interesting book, but depressing as hell by the end:

If you want tons of foot notes (no pun intended) and an extensive bibliography, look elsewhere. But for a narrated approach, it's great.

Trivia: Foote wrote every word of the series long hand using a dip pen. If I recall, the pen nib was a Probate 313, still available. Also, Foote was a gentleman. I spoke to him on the phone once, calling to thank him for his writing and how he enhanced the Ken Burns PBS series. (I believe this happened to him all the time.) He was gracious at the interruption of his day. And yes, he really did have that refined drawl you heard on TV.

The Missouri and Mississippi are, in my mind, one river. Two forks of the Great American River.

I mentioned this a while back, an article published recently about the vehicles that go missing in the river. They just vanish! If they're observed going in, there's almost no chance of recovery UNLESS it is located almost immediately, and then it has to be marked somehow to keep it from drifting away, down and into the mud.

No one has any idea how many vehicles are in there. Dozens? Hundreds? Buried where?

Sometimes even boats disappear. Big, honking metal shells that just lay down and disappear in the murky darkness.

Yes, if you don't realize how big these rivers are, you have no idea.

The reason Republicans can't govern is they can't resolve their internal contradictions.

Most of them are statists; they ran as Republicans out of opportunism. Because they are from a red district and so they have to wear the Republican label, even though they are ideologically centrist Democrats.

But their voters don't want Democrat policies. So, theses RINO's can't vote for what they want. And they can't vote for what their constituents want.

So they end up trying to calibrate "what's the minimum amount of ground I can concede to those stupid people who voted for me and still get the Big Government that I *know* is in their best interest."

And that's why they can't accomplish anything.

I spent most of the past few weeks not taking a side with this thing. I don't have time to study Congressional bills, and even if I did I'm not an expert on healthcare delivery, so I really have no idea what should or should not be in a bill that is worth passing.

AND NEITHER DOES PRETTY MUCH ANYBODY ELSE!

This healthcare mess is not going to be solved in Washington. Which is why, the best result of all would be to kill this bill, kill the next one that comes along, and let the one that exists today collapse and die from inertia and overbloat.

That won't happen either, but if it did then perhaps a market solution could be had.

No, some way or another, Washington is going "fix" healthcare. I have no faith in any solution they come up with, and I don't care how it gets built and sold and passed.

This is what I find mystifying: that people who otherwise talk about wanting smaller government aren't shouting from the rooftops that Washington should be forced out of this conversation.

Agree. Too many posters on here live in some movie or gaming world and try to assign mystical powers to Trump that he doesn't have.

I think Trump understood that this bill was going to repeal what it could through reconciliation and he then felt that the next two stages would be negotiated and passed within a year or two.

I believe Trump knows now that he is dealing with a party that he reluctantly belongs (don't you all remember the threats from him to do whatever he had to during the campaign regarding the non support, the actual threats from the RNC of pulling funding, the real Never Trumpers all running around screaming the sky is falling, how Ryan went ballistic over pussygate, etc.). Trump has now gotten to see who is adhering to their campaign rhetoric and believes in what they say and those who just tell their constituents anything to get elected.

So if he can peel off a few Democrats to help move a bill, all the better. Tell me Joe Manchin or some other Democrats from the south or Midwest who are not in their party's elite aren't going to look at coming on board with Trump as a positive for their district and their own numbers , especially if Trump won in their home court.

200 I will take privately funded art any day of the week over the work
product of the current crop of lazy, self-indulgent, narcissistic,
talentless drones whose only skill is sticking a thumb in the eye of
Western culture.

Last night I was reading some random super-cheap Kindle book I bought and forgot about, and the set-up to the mystery was the WPA program that paid painters to bring in a canvas every week. No quality check, then they just tossed the canvases into storage and eventually they were all given away or destroyed. Many of the big names in post-war American art were in this program, and many of the lost pictures could have been worth something (but why would a government agency bother try to recoup money spent by selling off assets people might want to purchase? The taxpayer trough is bottomless...)

Anyway, I stopped reading at a point where a character was bitching at Eleanor Roosevelt that the WPA murals being painted in public buildings (generally pro-America, and at least the taxpayers could go see what they were paying for) were too "realistic" and "pictorial". Who needs those old fuddy-duddies who could paint faces when you could just smear some colors?

204 Trivia: Foote wrote every word of the series long hand using a dip pen. If I recall, the pen nib was a Probate 313, still available.

When I can move my fat ass to write, I like to use a dip pen, myself. I find it very difficult to write fiction straight on the computer.

Posted by: JTB at March 27, 2017 10:06 AM (V+03K)

The same thing happened to Horowitz when he went to interview Foote. Every now and then the telephone (which he hated, along with Burns' series), he'd pick it up, listen for a moment and then drawl, "You're speaking to him."

The Foote chapter is called, I believe, At the Feet of the Master.

It wasn't. As Newt said this morning on F&F, when the bill was finally in the open, Paul, Cruz, and Lee all said they wouldn't vote for it. Newt said it should have been pulled then. You couldn't pass that bill in the Senate with three R Senators immediately saying they were a no.

Newt also said that he thought Trump should not try to pass tax reform immediately, but what he should start on it infrastructure , which the Democrats will gladly climb on board. Then work on tax reform and Obamacare on parallel tracks, he has no idea why the schedule for this was devised in this way, as it doesn't make sense from a legislative coalition sense.

what was poorly laid out was Ryan trying to get a huge piece of legislation undone without first working to convince the country this was the way to do it and WHY(explain about the taxes, etc.) and then have the constituents work on their representatives while the congress critters all fight with each other over their own issues with the bill.

And months from now, finally have a piece of legislation that can be passed by both houses and signed.

Newt was interesting with his comments this morning and I was on board with them. (not to mention he took a five second moment to slap Brian Kilmeade back in his chair for asking if Paul Ryan had permanently damaged President Trump, I enjoyed his angry face and his statement that Trump is not damaged).

Or pron. That works too, with sound turned off.

Sleep is absolutely integral to good health and optimal brain power during the day. You have to control it or it will control you.

I understand that's the new talking point but it really isn't true. Ryan announced over a year ago when they put a repeal bill through Congress and to Obama's desk that this was the process that was going to be used if we got a Republican president.

There were many, many committee meetings over the last year on this bill and those committees included members of the Freedom Caucus. Regular order. It wasn't written in some back room like Obamacare, it was written the way legislation was intended to be written. Don't believe the spin. And it had to come first and fast if they wanted to do other things this year because of legislative rules as much as people don't want to hear it.

I do think Ryan could have done a better job of informing people on the bill and the reasons for doing it this way but at the end of the day if you have a group of people who won't support the bill or the process and they have the numbers to stop it then that's what happens and no amount of negotiating is going to change the outcome.

Onward to tax reform. Obamacare is here for the foreseeable future.

I've known many highly intelligent people who can do math, engineering, design, etc. who can't manage people at all.
As have many here have found in their own workplaces.

Paul Ryan did not want the speakership job if you all remember. He had to be talked and cajoled into it and this is what you get when you elect or hire someone who doesn't want the job.

He probably is really good at math, as is his reputation. But trying to lead a dysfunctional organization such is the House of Representatives and get things that are approved via a majority of Americans requires a skill and finesse and some doublespeak that I don't believe Ryan possesses or wants to cultivate.
His performance with Slo Jo should have been an eye opener regarding how he can't deal with the number of lying politicians entrenched in Congress and that he is better suited to working on the nuts and bolts of legislation and not the movement of it through.

Trump has now had a window seat to this and he'll search for a different delivery system for what he wants to do.

Who would make a better leader in the House? Anyone who actually runs for the job and gets the votes through lobbying themselves. That would at least indicate they can manage people.

I guess there are two major theories. One, Ryan is a total sellout or he believed he thought this was the best he could do under the current rules.

Time will tell.

But if the shoe was on the other foot and the Freedom Caucus was in charge and they put a straight repeal on the docket I don't think that would have passed either even if it was allowed under the reconciliation rules which it wouldn't be.

At some point, the Republican caucus, not just Ryan but all of them, are going to have to decide if they want to govern or not. They have proven pretty good at blocking things, now let's see them get together and pass something.

There seems to be a hard belief that the conservatives in Congress are unwilling to compromise on anything.

I don't think there's any evidence for that. There IS evidence they won't compromise on SOME things, and I think we're pretty clear on what most of those things are.

What we're not clear on is, what is Ryan's hard line? What line won't he cross to get legislation passed?

If those two things are incompatible (and they might be), then this again, is where we figure out the Party is not one Party, but is irreparably fractured.

It might be, but we don't know because honestly, we have no idea what Ryan's hard principles are. No idea.

307 RE: Obamacare repeal, I don't think it will ever happen. And to be honest, Trump was probably right not hold the vote.

It comes out like this: The Rich have power; they can get what they want done by buying politicians.

As for everyone else, well, the takers have the power. They are a big voting block and NO politician EVER will vote to take away anything from the takers. EVER. Repealing Obamacare is perceived as taking something away from the takers. That makes the takers for vote for the party who is not taking away. And the parties want the takers votes as much as they want the money of the rich.

As for the makers, well, we exist to subsidize the takers. That's all. Our thoughts and our votes don't matter. All they need from us is our tax money. That's all.

/yep, it's a cynical monday...

318 I think the bill failure all comes back to the failure theater games of the past 4 years.

If they have put up eleventyteen bills to repeal Obamacare in the past, they should have one ready to go.

They instead went with this one. And said, well, we can't just repeal Obamacare.

SAY WHAT? You mean all that stuff we said we could do we really couldn't? That isn't the Freedom Caucus's fault.

If there is or was a multi tier path to get there, then that should have been laid out instead of here it is everybody vote on it.

324 I'd bet money that if McConnell had been able to start this process, it would have passed the Senate. That man can wrangle his people much better than Ryan.

I think the issue is that where the rubber meets the road there's:

a) Limited stomach for a pure repeal, because the previous 'system' was not a system and, for everyone who gets a $50 cut in their monthly employer-group plan you'll have an explosion in COBRA and individual plan costs.

b) Nor is there the stomach for the kind of cost-containment the NHS practices (the Brits import vast numbers of 'Asian' doctors to work as unionized government employees) and tell the providers "Hey, expensively trained American doctors, you're now driving Toyotas and flying coach, not our problem whether you can afford the ski cabin".

c) Nor is there enough willing to write off pharma contributions and say "Okay, you'll get paid at the average of the Canadian, German, British, and Italian reimbursement rate, Uncle Sugar's citizens aren't going to subsidize them anymore, raise their prices and your reimbursement here goes up."

d) It's entirely reasonable to establish greater competition and empty the birth control and gender-reassignment hormone pills and some of the frou-frou coverages from the benefit basket, but the preexisting-conditions horse has left the barn, it's reasonable to sanction those who don't carry insurance until their gut explodes but guaranteed-issue and some form of community rating for those maintaining coverage and transitioning between forms of coverage is going to continue.

d) It would also be reasonable to control use of very, very expensive specialists like anesthesiologists who are the modern equivalent of buggy-whip vendors, there will always be a need for a few to handle corner cases and they'll probably make ridiculous sums for that specialty, but in most cases automated solutions can more readily handle the job than, say, they can with self-driving semis or Uber.

325 It's easy for the Left to demonize wealth, but here is a very nice example of what it can do.

When Bander and I were going through the National Gallery of Art, we took the time to read the spiel about how it came into existence. As a result, I have now revised my definition of fuck you money.

Fuck you money is when you are so damn rich you can tell a US President, hey, I think what this country needs is an art museum so I'm just going to build it and fill it up with all the extra Old Masters I have that eh I just don't need around anymore, that okay with you?

Because, more or less, that's what Andrew Mellon did.

That, dear Horde, is fuck you money.

When is that time? Watch the for the politicians to start talking about this without prompting and you will know.

My larger point isn't really policy related. It's all about how McConnell, if he wanted to pass it, could pass almost any repeal/replace bill if he really wanted to. It's what his decades in the Senate has taught him to do.

There are large policy discussion to be had, but I'm just thinking, at the moment, of the pure politics of getting legislation through a Chamber of Congress.

I don't think there's any evidence one way or the other. Many of these guys have never been in charge when there was a Republican president so they've never actually had to pass anything meaningful.

Mark Meadows, the head of the Freedom Caucus, has been in office since 2013. Similarly, many of the members of the Caucus come from safe Republican districts so they don't really feel the need to compromise on much.

And on the other side you have Republicans from purple or even bluish districts and they have their constituencies.

I don't know if Ryan is up to the job of governing the House or not but I also don't think it's an easy job at all. Very diverse group with lots of people who don't seem to want to compromise so far and nothing is getting done unless there is some compromise on legislation.

Getting those storied abs you see in action movies and Superman

muscle. You can even get a flat stomach. But those rippling six-packs
are not going to show on most people....

Good luck

Doubtful. The group of donors that they are at the center of has an enormous pot of money that they promised to use to support people who voted against the bill because it didn't go far enough in completely repealing Obamacare.

Thank G-d that the democrats didn't pull this shit on Ronald Reagan. Tens of millions of post war children were suddenly hitting working age. His policies created the opportunity for business growth and job creation that accommodated these tens of millions.

I understand the theory. But the reality is that groups like Americans For Prosperity, which is largely the Koch Brothers, was very vocal in opposing this bill and said they would donate to those who voted against it and oppose those who voted for it.

So you can't just say donors are all behind the GOPe. Everyone has donors and constituents and there are a lot of very strange bedfellows in DC.

Ugh! I hate that. Mostly happens at about 3:00 AM on a night where I've had too much to drink. Pounding headache, beer trots and upset stomach add to the misery of not being able to get back to sleep.

On sober nights though, the best thing I have found to help chase the thoughts out of my head and get to sleep is prayer. And no, I'm not some preachy, come to Jesus freak. I do remember the prayers from my childhood (I'm Catholic) so I usually start with an Act of Contrition--hoping that will clear the black marks on my soul in case I croak in my sleep. Then I tell God if He doesn't want to listen, I understand, since I am such a useless jerk and only come running to Him when I have problems. Then I start saying Hail Marys and Our Fathers until I drift off. Whole process usually lasts about a half hour.

There was a story in... I wanna say Slate... a few weeks back about a Millennial who had paid off her $200K student loan debt in just two years. It was simple,

- Her mom gave her a job at the Non-Profit she ran and paid her $150K per year.
- Her mom bought her a condo, so she wouldn't have to pay rent.
- She then sold the condo and moved in with her mom and used the funds to pay off the debt.

See how easy that was for a responsible "self-sufficent" Millennial?

Will never work unless everyone decides they want Sri Lankan doctors or whatever.

No American male or female is going to go to college for 4 years then to Med school/etc for medical training for 8 years and then set up an office.

All of that is a huge investment in time and money. Not to mention all of the time and money and loss of good times invested just for the opportunity to go to med school.

To me there's no point in getting to know the individuals, or even to know who is part of the Apple Dumpling Caucus and who is part of the Flaming Arrow Caucus.

I'll divide them into Gopes and conservatives. And define for myself what "conservative" means, regardless of what shows up on the back of their bubble gum card.

Possibly because it isn't true. This bill went through the normal, remember when everyone wanted normal process instead of back room legislating ... seems so last year, committee process which included 4 different committees and included Freedom Caucus members.

They were included, it's just that what they wanted wasn't enough to get passed but it was enough to stop the bill from passing. That's really the net of the problem, you have to have a bill that 1) can get passed and 2) is acceptable to the rules you are using.

Unlike what we hear from the media everyday, the Republicans have a very diverse group of people in Congress ranging from the Susan Collins types to the Jim Jordan types in both Houses. The Democrats have purged just about everyone who isn't far left so its a lot easier for them to be united. If all the Freedom Caucus' demands were met, which would not have been a reconciliation bill but leave that aside, they would have lost the more moderate members and we'd be having a similar discussion about them.

If they don't figure out how to work together soon we are going to see the same slow motion car wreck on tax reform.

I think that the overall composition of each congressional district makes it very unlikely that Republicans will get replaced with Democrats in a mid term for not passing legislation.

Republicans will still be able to make the argument of, "We didn't get you into this mess!" They'll have incumbency. I'm not sure how willing national Democrats will be in terms of heterodoxy in terms of the ACA, so the message on both sides will probably still be Republicans calling for its repeal and Democrats calling for "fixes" at most.

Sure, there will be pissed off segments of the base, but overall, I think that there won't be enough to tip the balance in enough races.

If you're the senate democrats, why would you actually want to fillibuster the bill? If I'm Chuck Schumer, I just tell the democrats to vote against it, then when the thing comes crashing down in a few years (because it will because it didn't fundamentally fix any of Obamacare's issues), the democrats get to look all high and mighty with having voted against it which gives the mandate for single payor. This depends on the democrats getting back into power at some point in the future, sure, but probability tells us that that's going to happen eventually, and probably in 8 years, if not 4.

Oh the stories I could tell. How about some intrepid criminals wheeling an entire display of watches out to the parking lot on one of the store's own stock carts and loading it into a van? Or the guy with 12 multi-packs of underwear stuffed down his "booster bloomers." Or 2 working together who tried to house over 600.00 worth of batteries at once.

I had to get out of that line of work. It was destroying my faith in humanity.

512 e.g. a museum mounts an exhibit of leonardo da vinci to travel to 3
other museums (to spread costs which are sky high for insurance, etc.).
should the n.e.a. kick in some $$ to make it happen?

A private organization could also accomplish this.

The idea sounds reasonable, but 1) the money will be taken from all taxpayers for the benefit of a tiny fraction who live near the chosen museums (which will be in NYC, California, and possibly Chicago, because they always are) and 2) the agency will start with Good Art like the Leonardo and end up funding drag puppet shows because that's what always happens.

FWIW, I have seen two Raphaels--coincidentally paintings of the same woman, at different times--one at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and one at the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the security, transportation, and insurance for both exhibitions were funded entirely with private money.

the governor came up with a plan to raise private and state (michigan) funds to buy the art from the city and turn the museum private like almost all museums in america and which they should have done years ago.

i think philadelphia is the only other city owned large museum.

but i think michigan state funds were involved. should they have. dunno. but the case is made that the museum was an asset and benefit fr the citizens beyond the $$ alone.

568 >>"Yeah, but he had an extra 2 weeks in the internship 20 years ago."

Heh.

Not only is it insane that they want to mandate that ~ half the potential workforce get an additional paid leave, 3 days /month (out of ~21 workdays), there's the issue with, er, cycle alignment. All the women in the office could be taking the same 3 days off. And while I can see where that could be a good thing - yay, time off from women at work! - it could get dicey when this overlaps with deadlines, or say, when its a small business and it would have no staff, etc.

This is not an advancement, this makes them a burden/risk in the workplace.

They're silk. They're heavy. They're hot to wear. You don't see ventilation holes bored into top hats.

Thus, while it is an interesting artsy thing to do, and we've seen it in movies many times, in real life a person would rarely choose a top hat as their everyday hat. Even an old one, that you didn't care about ruining, is a bad choice anywhere that's hot or even just warm.

One of the great things about cowboy hats is that they are good looking AND functional.
