Saturday Morning Weird News Dump

sat weird.png

Good Mornin' Morons. Happy Saturday.

So here are a few things that received little to no attention here at the AoSHQ.

Just a few interesting things you can talk about. Or, you help yourself to something else in this open thread. Just remember the golden rules, no running with sharp objects and play nice with others.

Enjoy your Weekend Morons.

It being Big Lots I will probably never see it again. But they had 20 oz bags for $5 and my self fill pod is going to get WAY more than 14 out of that.

Plus it's good coffee.

Comparison other CAF from BRC was like $20 for 12 cups with shipping and, well, harsh.

74 The wine bottle thing is interesting.

There is a field of study about the "teapot effect" which is the tendency of tea to dribble down the outside of the pot when you pour.
There are a theories about why it happens, but it appears to be agreed it is an issue with the thickness of the lip, and the tendency of tea to cling to what it is being poured over.
One guy. Joseph Keller, thinks it also has to do with air pressure differentials around the pouring spout that can be ameliorated with a redesign of the pot ( http://preview.tinyurl.com/lgvfwry ), an MIT group thought it had to do with the fluidics of the tea itself and may be resolved by using hydrophillic materials.( http://preview.tinyurl.com/mp4uec4 )

Since Dr Joseph Keller once got an igNobel for a study on why joggers' ponytails swing from side to side when their heads are going up and down I think I like his answer best.

Actually I just like watching women joggers with pony tails

I should write.

During the evolution of the character design for Sterling, the initial version looked like a serial killer. "The second, like a serial killer and Clive Owen had a baby." LOL, he did!

For the characters' voices, they sent out character descriptions to various agencies and asked for "somebody like Jessica Walter from Arrested Development" to play Malory. Jessica's agent called to ask if they would like the actual Jessica Walter, they of course said yes, and after that it was much easier to get good voice talent to sign on.

But we had a friend who had coffee canceled at work and she was having an otherwise shitty couple of weeks, so we picked up a Keurig from Craigs List to send to her. We had to test it before we sent it. We ended up testing it for a week!

It was so much more convenient. Pods do matter, though. Some are weak. I find you can't go wrong with Newman's Own.

But see my review of Ignitor, above.

Also, fill your own pods are messy, especially at work. I am getting technique down here at home where I don't actually leave coffee grounds all around.

135 Regarding OCare, I think the Rs should first pass a simple bill repealing it, with some sort of time provisions to wind down the subsidies and Medicaid expansion. *note that the 2016 repeal bill they passed and TFG vetoed didn't repeal the whole thing*

The reason for doing this is simple as well -- It will force the Senate Dems to filibuster and ultimately kill the bill, which will be great optics in 2018 as OCare continues its death spiral.

And I have to wonder how they managed to get the bill thru the Senate last year with a filibuster; did the Senate Dems fold as they knew TFG would certainly veto? Here's what Ryan said in 2016 (lifted from Redstate which I am not linking):

"It's no surprise that someone named Obama vetoed a bill repealing Obamacare," Ryan said in a statement.

"But here's the thing. The idea that Obamacare is the law of the land for good is a myth. This law will collapse under its own weight, or it will be repealed. Because all those rules and procedures Senate Democrats have used to block us from doing this? That's all history," he added. "We have now shown that there is a clear path to repealing Obamacare without 60 votes in the Senate. So, next year, if we're sending this bill to a Republican president, it will get signed into law."

154 The bubble quiz had 25 questions like "do you own a pickup" "have you been fishing in the last 5 years" "do you ever eat at IHOP" "do you know anyone in the military" and questions of that nature. And the end score is on a 0-80 (or 90?) scale. The lower the score the more bubbly you are. So someone who scores a 5 lives on the upper west side and has never left NYC.

I scored a 40.

He said, "We'll talk about this tomorrow morning."

But, nothing...

I've no right to speak, not being religious, but I'll bet this evangelist pushing this story is a Charismatic. They are the Jerry Springers of Christianity. It's great if this bar owner repented and stopped living that disgusting lifestyle. But Charismatics can't just leave it at regeneration and repentance as the reformers would have. They have to turn everything into a sensationalistic, outlandish freakshow, like hookers and an "annointed cake" (made with Miracle Whip?). It reminds me of Jesus' rebuke to the Pharisees: "A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign".

179 Late to the party, I know, but have a coffee tip: If you have a GFS (Gordon Food) nearby, try their Italian roast whole bean. It's $11.99 or so for a two-pound bag (CHEAP), and it's great coffee. No more of that overpriced lefty crap in "Obama pound" bags (that's 11 or 12oz). GFS often has it on sale for $9.99 a bag, but always next week or last week.

180 Well, I guess there is a way. I'll have to investigate this.

However, you can adjust the sensitivity of the light sensor by choosing one of five settings: Max (lights will come on when it is still pretty light out), High, Mid, Low, and Min (lights won't come on until it is pretty dark out). To choose which setting you would like to use, follow these steps: 1. Turn the ignition to On, while making sure the vehicle is completely stopped. 2. Press the Menu button. 3. Use the +/- buttons to highlight Customize Settings, then press Source. 4. Use the +/- buttons to highlight Lighting Setup, then press Source. 5. Use the +/- buttons to highlight Auto Light Sensitivity, then press Source. 6. Use the +/- buttons to choose between Max, High, Mid, Low, and Min, then press Source.

I'm sure it varies with the car.

247 re the Scott Adams Blog, the promotion from hitler to incompetent is a promotion I suppose, but Trump is anything but incompetent.

Anything that made Mutti Merkel go from her traditional "America owes us - inclusivity - diversity is strength - Amerikkka" to "we owe America lots for their support - we have lots of economic discussions to make" during a pre-staged press conference means that the Trumpster has some mad arm twisting skills.

248 I'm no veterinarian, but I get a vague sense of foreboding re: April. The longer this pregnancy drags on the more likely there will be a bad obstetric outcome. That would be a shame.
Posted by: Little Orphan Muldoon at March 25, 2017 10:29 AM (wPiJc)

The "due date" was a guess. I don't believe they know for sure when Oscar successfully bred April, the two go out together, so no one necessarily saw the breeding that counted.

The zoo vets have said that unlike domesticated animals, such as cows, horses, etc. no one has been breeding giraffes and calving out babies for centuries, collecting data and amassing what usual impeding birth signs are considered correct for the species.

In other words, they are all just guessing.....

Hey I'll try to comment, my grandson decided that I should dine with him tomorrow - he's 4 and he asked if I wanted to go the pub with him - they have the best sausages he told me and he really, really needs to eat sausages on Sunday with me

This pub has plenty of big screens around so we can watch the race

However hopefully I might be home ...

Trump went from Hitler to incompetent because of legislative failure.

I did notice yesterday the MSM replaying, over and over, Trump making campaign promise to 'repeal and replace'.

257 Everyone loves to game out 6 dimensional chess with politicians. Well, we'll lose here but really we'll win because in 3 months we'll do this thing which will lead to that thing happening in 6 months and then in 12 months what we really lost today will become a win.

That's just silly. Politicians bribe each other to get shit they want. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. That's it. AHCA didn't work. It might in the future, it might not. But nobody planned for this to fail as a way for it not to fail in the future.

261 @247 If you have been reading Adams over time, he is NOT saying that Trump being thought of as incompetent is a promotion for Trump.

It is a promotion for POLITICS. The previous TRUMP IS HITLER politics were really hard. And we saw plenty of ill effects. I mean, let's be clear - Trump is not and was not Hitler. But that didn't change things. You would think that just not being Hitler would be enough to defeat it. But it wasn't. If people thought Trump was Hitler, then By Any Means Necessary is perfectly okay.

But if the new meme is Trump is a goof, well, no one is scared of a goof. And it is perfectly normal politics.
Hey, if he is a goof, he can be beaten my normal means.

Except the Trump is a loser meme is easily defeated. Because Trump is a winner. Adams predicts that turn, too, btw.

266 Looking at Trump's aprroval numbers..

Rasmussen was in the 50s up to about 2-3 weeks ago, not he's in the mid 40s.

Gallup on the other hand has stayed steady in the low 40s over the same time span.

Not sure what to make of that. Maybe Gallup was right all along? Maybe Gallup was wrong all along and now it's just right by accident? Rasmussen is all over the map?

Just goes to show once again how inaccurate polling really is.
