LA Times Continues Serving as Clinton Family PR Unit: Chelsea Clinton Just Never Gets a Break!
Also: Backdoor GAINZZZ Thread

Hmm, poor little rich girl doesn't have to do anything but sign checks people give to her nothing at all, and she doesn't even have to sign them -- she has People to do that for her.

She gets $600,000 from NBC to do a couple of almost-unairable puff pieces.

And then she gets "Impact" awards for having successfully managed to be born.

But poor her anyway.

You can read a bit of this author's previous work here.

By the way, Chelsea Clinton's big job today was tweeting out this story, which, coincidentally, also appears in the LA Times that just puff-pieced her lame ass, and which claims that global warming will cause greater (wait for it....) diabetes.

If the average temperature rises by 1 degree Celsius, sea levels will rise, crop yields will fall and vulnerable species will see their habitat shrink or disappear.

And, a new study suggests, the number of American adults suffering from diabetes would rise by more than 100,000 a year....

Researchers thought they might find a link between rising temperatures and diabetes for a completely different reason -- the activity of brown fat.

Also known as brown adipose tissue, or BAT, this fat kicks into gear when temperatures are low and the body needs heat to stay warm.

A 2015 study of eight adults with Type 2 diabetes found that after spending 10 days in moderately cold weather, their metabolisms improved and they became more sensitive to insulin, reversing a key symptom of the disease.

I was reading about this last part recently, about the effect of exposure to cold in spurring weight loss. White fat is harder to burn; brown fat burns more easily. As one gets older, one has less brown fat and more white fat (thus making it harder to burn off weight as one ages).

Brown fat is claimed to be activated by cold temperatures -- it might be fat specifically sequestered for hibernation or for burning to fight off winter cold.

So of course people are now seizing on this to claim that global warming may cause less brown fat to burn.

Of course, they don't mention the other part of the speculation on brown fat -- that simply taking cold showers might activate its burning.

While white fat stores excessive calories which can lead to obesity, brown fat burns energy off.

Both are in our bodies and white can be converted into the good brown fat.

Dr Lee has just returned from two years at the National Institute of Health in Washington which delved into the theory that cold exposure increases brown fat activity.

"We invite individuals, healthy individuals, and expose them to cold temperatures from 18 degrees Celsius all the way to 12C until they shiver and measure the hormones levels in their body," he said.

"And we found as the temperature dropped, the individuals started to shiver and two hormones in the body increased."

The two hormones they looked at included FGF21, found in brown fat, and irisin, which is produced by muscle.

These are also increased during exercise.

I keep thinking about taking cold showers for two weeks as a GAINZZZ experiment but 1, cold showers are kinda unpleasant, and 2, this would require me to shower in the first place.

However, maybe I'll try it. Cold showers (or baths) at night supposedly cool down your body and thereby prime it for sleep (as the body considers cold temperatures to be a prompt for sleeping), so I guess with two reasons to try this, maybe I will.

BTW, I've tried cold showers before. It makes it more bearable if you start with the shower cool but not cold, and then gradually lower the Hot fraction of the water down as low as you can bear. Walking into an ice-cold shower is too much of a shock.

And don't tell me "When I was in the Army, we used to consider an Ice Cold Shower the height of Luxury!" Because if you want to go Four Yorkshiremen on me, I am ready to go tragedy for tragedy with you.

But anyway: Global Warming bad, Chelsea Clinton good.

Backdoor GAINZZZ Thread: Well this is already sort of a GAINZZZ thread, so I guess let's make this a GAINZZZ thread.

I've been stupid lately. I've had very high carb days -- like, totally off any kind of diet, just eating tacos and donuts (seriously) -- and then figured, "Eh, in four days I'll be back in ketosis."

Which was true. But then, five days after the carb binge, when I was just getting back into light pink ketosis, decided to go off diet again and have Pie.

So my GAINZZZ are shit, and I know why they're shit.

I've been exercising, though, so at least I'm continually getting into better shape. (I can also brag that I've been exercising injured and in pain.)

Not real fat loss though. I continue flirting tantalizingly close to being a Not Fat person, but can't quite cross that line.

How yo' GAINZZ doin'?

21 But, if warmer temperatures cause more fat people, when they drive their cars the increased weight will increase the perceived air pressure in their tires, and we all know that increasing the pressure in your tires improves your gas mileage, resulting in a smaller carbon footprint, thereby reversing global warming. It's a self-fixing problem.

Correlation doesn't mean causation.

With AGW they don't even have correlation, as there's much evidence that increased CO2 lags temperature increases, not the other way around.

Which makes perfect sense because the oceans will give up CO2 as they get warmer.

65 No, it's not the cold shower any more, it's the hot bath.

At Loughborough University we investigated the effect of a hot bath on blood sugar control (an important measure of metabolic fitness) and on energy expended (number of calories burned). We recruited 14 men to take part in the study. They were assigned to an hour-long soak in a hot bath (40C) or an hour of cycling. The activities were designed to cause a 1C rise in core body temperature over the course of one hour.

We measured how many calories the men burned in each session. We also measured their blood sugar for 24 hours after each trial.

Cycling resulted in more calories being burned compared with a hot bath, but bathing resulted in about as many calories being burned as a half-hour walk (around 140 calories). The overall blood sugar response to both conditions was similar, but peak blood sugar after eating was about 10% lower when participants took a hot bath compared with when they exercised.

80 What is missing here is the 600 pound gorilla on the couch. In order for anything to "cause" global warming first there has to BE global warming. What we have is a cycle of global temperatures like an elongated sine wave. We have temps going up for a few decades, then turn-around temps going down. We have been cooling since 1998 and they have been hiding it by fudging the numbers. I suspect with Trump that is about to change.

90 This really is comical - global warming will make people fat, so we can destroy civilization, or,, turn down the fucking thermostat and maybe get outside and walk a bit on a cold day.

The latter involves taking personal responsibility and leaving others alone.
The former, however, allows you to keep nice and warm, and rich since you expect the other people to sacrifice. It also allows you to boss and tyrannize others. Millions may die in third world countries, but your neighbors in Palo Alto will be sporty, so lets do that then.

Warming lengthens the growing season, opens new areas for farming, and increases the amount of moisture in the atmosphere and Earth's surface.

Cooling shortens the growing season, reduces farming area, and locks moisture in the icecaps which expands deserts.

By the way, a commenter mentioned ab vacuums as a good exercise to reduce waistline size:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDx1xfSobG4

I think it does work. Certainly one can't argue the theory is implausible -- if you train your ab muscles to pull in tight, they'll tend to be better at keeping tight.

I used to think "sucking in your gut" was kind of cheating, but I think now you're supposed to have strong enough ab muscles that they generally keep sucked in (and keep your core tight) most of the time, not just for those three seconds when you're getting a picture taken or trying to look good for that waitress at Applebee's.

A fundamental problem here is that at places like the University of East Anglia, notorious for the "Climategate" e-mails, the boffins haven't just fiddled with the historical temperature record to produce a new data set which they use in place of the original.

They have instead _overwritten and destroyed_ the historical data sets in their entirety. Said data can now no longer be relied upon in any way. Nor, given the slapdash, ad hoc, undocumented nature of the tampering, can the original data be reliably reconstructed by backing out the successive algorithmic modifications.

In fairness, when I was in the Army and deployed, a cold shower was considered a luxury. I still hate them, however.

I do notice that I feel better after one. I think it's because I like REALLY hot showers, to the point where I'm almost overheating.

Mai gainz have been shit lately. I've been pretty good about IF, but not low carb. Usually I manage a couple of low-carb days a week. I'm trying to get back onto a regular schedule, but the main problem is that I eat out a lot, since I'm in class from about 2pm to 10pm. I'm going to try and cook more on Sundays to make enough meals to last a week.

Exercise wise, I've not been to the gym in weeks. I tweaked my back a while back, and then my knee started to hurt. I've been limiting myself to push ups, overhead presses with two 30lbs dumbbells, and sprints about twice a week.

For mental gainz, my italian study has stalled due to increased classwork. On the other hand, I'm trying to get out and do a few things that I've wanted to do for a while. I took a blacksmithing class a few weeks ago, and a motorcycle rider's course last weekend. This weekend I plan to try and go tango dancing tonight and tomorrow so I can be social and get some light cardio. The goal is to make it a weekly or bi-monthly habit, along with the blacksmithing and going out to see a monthly live-band burlesque show.

183 It dawns on me that I haven't reported my GAINZZZ for awhile.

To catch up, I suffered a fall and a moderate traumatic brain injury/subarachnoid hemorrhage back in November. Then I was following the low carb high fat thing along with exercise and hit my target weight of 180. Woot!

Unfortunately, after recovery/rehab and such, along with not being able to exercise, I had gained ten pounds over the intervening months. I'm finally back on my feet and looking to get back to my target weight.

Incidentally....part of my treatment was involved in telling doctors of my diet, and not a single one said it was bad/evil/whatever. So there's that.

He has done some bizarre things in regard to expanding the ability of the human body to endure cold. He does stuff like climbing mountains wearing nothing more than hiking boots and shorts.
You can also look at a book called What doesn't kill us (with a lengthy subtitle) by Scott Carney. The theory is that cold weather increases brown adipose tissue, which helps burn the white (bad) stuff.
He also believes modern comforts have cost a lot of things, including the ability to adapt to cold.

The best part of hitting a heavy bag is the realization -- after you've done it a couple weeks -- that you can take just about anybody in your weight class if it ever becomes bare knuckles.

Nobody outside of a gym rat who also hits the heavy bag can possibly be in the kind of shape to last more than a minute or two against you. Their heart will explode first. So many muscles, so much dancing around, arms above heart. It's wicked exercise.

303 >>>>A fundamental problem here is that at places like the University of East
Anglia, notorious for the "Climategate" e-mails, the boffins haven't
just fiddled with the historical temperature record to produce a new
data set which they use in place of the original.

They have
instead _overwritten and destroyed_ the historical data sets in their
entirety. Said data can now no longer be relied upon in any way. Nor,
given the slapdash, ad hoc, undocumented nature of the tampering, can
the original data be reliably reconstructed by backing out the
successive algorithmic modifications.

SCIENCE, BITCHES!!!
.
.
.
.Yep, all of the original raw data has been rendered useless intentionally. At this point I doubt their is any original temp data out there for anyone to use.

NASA uses this excuse on why they don't use raw data:

Q. Why can't we use just raw data?

A. Just averaging the raw data would give results that are highly
dependent on the particular locations (latitude and elevation) and
reporting periods of the actual weather stations; such results would
mostly reflect those accidental circumstances rather than yield
meaningful information about our climate.

So basically they are saying actual temp readings are inaccurate and accidental. That makes no sense what so ever and sounds like a bureaucratic made up statement.

324 Ace, I worked on the heavy bag from time to time when I first started working on GAINZZZ. I had a coach from work help me get started. He told me to ALWAYS wrap my hands, either regular or gel wraps. I bought Ringside gel wrap gloves, which fit like half-finger gloves with padding on the knuckles. They fit tight enough to keep the bones in the hand from rattling all around during impact. I then bought a set of bag gloves to wear over the gel wraps. The glove cushion my hands, the wraps keep the bones secured. Never had a problem with knuckle/hand/wrist issues.

I had tried bag gloves only but was still in pain. The gel wraps alone weren't sufficient. But both together worked really well.

344 232 Ace: "in the shorter term I try listening to some of the italian pop songs I heard in The Man From UNCLE."

Check out an album by Mike Patton (of Faith No More) called "Mondo Cane" (an Italian expression meaning "It's a dog's world"). It's Patton, singing Italian pop songs from the 50s and 60s, backed up by an orchestra. No crazy Faith No More / Mr. Bungle screaming, just passionate singing in Patton's fluent Italian.

Saw him perform this stuff live at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in SF a few years ago; it was a lot of fun. Get lyric sheets and it'll definitely help your Italian learning.

I wish I had some Italian movie and TV show recommendations. I'm into the Neapolitan-mob series "Gomorrah," based on Roberto Saviano's reporting, which also spawned the movie by the same name. Season 1 is on Netflix, season 2 starts on SundanceTV in late April. Only problem is that the dialogue is almost all in the Neapolitan dialect, which is hard even for northern Italians to understand, but I can pick out some words here and there and have a sense for some of the different words and pronunciations that they use in Naples vs. "official" (i.e. Tuscan) Italian.

Do people have superpowers? Is this a reverse world like the Twilight Zone episode where beauty was considered unappealing?

If you are trying to sell Chelsea Clinton as unlucky, you don't need willing suspension of disbelief, you need to take disbelief into the parking lot and put a bullet in it's brain! If you are seriously trying to make this sale, I think you need an origin story first. Maybe get into the Chelsea is "unlucky" in the sequel...or perhaps the super-team team-up.

I tried that but could not make myself obey. I went back to drawing like a stupidass as I have always done.

Adam Carolla had this great and insightful semi-rant about one's "natural form." He was pointing out that one's "natural form" at anything -- swinging a baseball bat, throwing a pitch, throwing a punch, drawing, anything -- is always wrong, and always shit, but people just don't want to give up their shitty "natural form" and learn proper technique.

People resist learning. Especially UNlearning. When the first step is "unlearn the crappy 'natural form' you've been using," people won't do it, because they feel like that's a step backwards or something.

it's a real psychological hurdle. I know the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain technique is CORRECT, but I just can't take the advice.

(This happens in foreign language learning too where a huge hurdle is people insisting on clinging to English for pronunciation, syntax, etc., instead of letting go those unhelpful rules of the English language.)

379 For bag training:

Do knuckle push-ups as part of your training regimen. They'll toughen your knuckles up and help you train yourself to keep your wrists straight.

Keep your wrists straight when you hit the bag. Your arm from your elbow to the two first knuckles should be a straight line. Bending the wrist at impact is a fast trip to tendinitis and possibly fractured carpals.

Don't let your knuckles slide across the bag. Hit straight on and don't drag when resetting. Try hitting the bag without gloves periodically to get the feel for this.

You can further condition your knuckles by punching harder objects, like a kime bag or makiwara board, but start off easy to avoid injury.

Lol at your drawings and everything you need to improve (there is always a lot)... then pick ONE and figure out how to practice just that. So if it's just making smoother lines, do that for five minutes. Then do another. If it's copying something accurately, do it repeatedly and check your work in between. The thing that's so frustrating about drawing is how many things there are that can go wrong, so even if you get better, it still looks like shit.

You need to tighten up one thing at a time. The improvement is relatively quick, and satisfying.

hah, it's funny, I don't remember that detail but I do remember reading all this meticulous detail about the exact breakfast bond ate and the exact calisthentics regime he did every morning.

The shower thing was probably in that section. It was probably Casino Royale.

Refined sugar became common only about 150 years ago. Prior to that most sugar would have been in seasonal fruits and honey.

Posted by: E Depluribus Unum at March 24, 2017 06:40 PM (ZFUt7)

We were on the boxer's side. We got him and his wife out of there and said we had no idea who he was. The guy that was beaten up, his face looked terrible, just awful.
The boxer guy hit him in the face with both fists about 10 times. It was bad.

412 It was something like, "Three cups of turkish coffee, black and unsweetened, one cup of greek yoghurt [he spelled it that way] and ten cigarettes of is personal proprietary blend from his tobacconist's."

And it was like ten cigarettes. For breakfast. (Ian Fleming was a chain smoker and died of lung cancer.)

Then he did his push ups.

Well there's cocaine, and there's crack cocaine.

There's sugar, and there's high fructose corn syrup.

Virtually orders of magnitude worse in both circumstances.

There are certain aisles, the inside aisles, in grocery stores that are filled with HFCS in every product. In some cases now, sugar plus HFCS. Because people think foods taste better with that stuff.

418 i couldn't find the citation for bond's morning meals but his exercise regimen is so:

His morning routine consists of 20 slow press-ups, "enough straight-leg lifts to make his stomach muscles scream," 20 toe-touches, and a series of arm and chest exercises combined with deep breathing.

...

hey it was the 50s.

apparently when he was in training to fight Mr. Big in Live and Let Die (the book -- and I have no recollection of why he was preparing for a fight with him, like it was a scheduled event), he cut his smoking down to ten cigarettes per day.

421 I'm still moving forward with my Low BLOS Life Diet (see URL link). There may be a way to have your Low BLOS Cake and Eat it...or something like that. Identify your Processed Carbs that have added inorganic sulfur (sulfates and sulfites) and switch to Processed Carbs without inorganic sulfur. Reduction in dietary inorganic sulfur should reduce Blood Oxidative Stress (BLOS) over time (few weeks), which may improve health.

Okay, but what kind of knockout?
Concussive knock out?
Nerve knock out?
Hell, just spend $40 or $50 on a 1M volt stun gun.

423 I get sick if I eat bad carbs now (anything that's not green). I throw up. My body and mind loves the high fat Hugh protein diet. The high fat is definitely helping muscle growth, strength and recovery.

I eat a pizza with extra cheese every 2 or 3 weeks. I'll do a 48 hour fast. Helps kick meridian back in.

I strongly suggest investing in a home gym called the Tower 200. Keeps the injuries down. Grows and strengthens the smaller stablizer muscles. Able to do complex exercises or basic. Also add high reps with that. All you need is a door.

Been taking a old bottle of Force Factor from GNC. Night and day with mental focus, energy, and vascularity. Any Nitric Oxide pre workout blend is key.

Water Water and more water. I drink 120 ounces a day and 3 32oz Powerade Zero's. Also black coffee throughout the day.

Sleep is super important now that I'm my post age 35 range.
I started measuring my urine at night. I don't give a Fuck how it sounds. I per in the large mouth Powerade 32 ounce bottles at night. I'll fill up between 2-4. That's between 4 and 8 pounds of water stripped from the time I go to bed to Anne I wake up. Serious fat shredding and muscle growth overnight.

I've gone from a 44 inch waist Thanksgiving to a 35 inch waist this morning when I measured.

I lift throughout the day. An hour main workout before my one meal a day at night. An 10-15 minute high rep every hour or 2 hours with the back, shoulders, legs, chest. Been doing this for a month. Strength is up 300%. Crazy fast. Rows on the Tower 200 are your friend.

My goal is strong lifts went from 5 months from now to a month to 6 weeks.

I appreciate the GAINZZZ Thread. I was a wreck and doing crazy good swing fast results. Thanks Ace, Rons, and Ettes.

435 On the plus side, Ace, there are some studies now that say carbs help stave off dementia; so you can use that as justification. ;-) You're just ahead of the curve!

Didn't fast this week, busy with taxes and all sorts of nasty shit, and by the time I got to thinking about supper and planning the night to drink broth early and go to bed early, it's was already late, or had to run and pick up the man. =| But in defence, I've had fish twice this week and signed up to start yoga again on Sunday, with an old teacher I really loved. Also started my food diary again and did the stair master and worked in pull ups.

Haven't lost anything, *might* be up a pound. So I consider it a win.

It's Friday and we're going to have STEAK. We spring for a piece of Wagyu periodically and split it. Straddle the line between rare and medium rare in the infrared broiler. Tasty tasty! Can't wait. If you have a Trader Joe's nearby, give the fire-roasted frozen veggies with balsamic sauce a chance. They are AMAZING- pearl onions, roasted peppers, tomatoes and green beans in tangy balsamic; perfect with a rich steak.

Happy Friday, my dear, dear morons. =)

3 months consistent daily workouts on this. You will strengthen large, small, and stablizer muscles. You will still get the muscle pump. After the 3 months add weights at the gym. Use both. Best 60 bucks you can spend. Add 20 for the straight bar. You only need a door to be on your way to orgasmic muscle pumps daily. Good Luck!

446 The only GAINZZ I have, are that I've stuck to my resolution to make it to the gym once a week. (I know that's pathetic; but once per week is way better than once a season!) I've started trying intervals on the exercise bike - rather than 30 leisurely minutes, I warm up at 60 rpm for 3 minutes, then crank it to 80-90 rpm for one minute, back to 60 rpm for a minute, back to 80-90 for a minute, and try to make it all the way to 30 minutes that way. Also trying to challenge myself to increase the weights I lift, carefully, since I've had lots of joint issues in the past. I'm having trouble modifying my eating, so no weight loss yet. But spring/summer is the season for lots of garden work, and lots of fresh vegetables, so hopefully that will help with both increased activity/less sitting here at the computer, and improved food choices.

Under LEARNZZ, I'm learning to do cursive writing with my left (non-dominant) hand. Seriously, how the heck did I ever learn to write cursive as an 8-year-old kid?? This is HARD! Trying to get the upper loops of letters like b, f, h, l to be parallel, all the same width - ditto with the lower loops of letters like f, j, y, z - trying not to alternate between straight-up and slanted-right - spacing the letters, and the words, evenly - and making dots on the i and j that actually look like dots! I've been using pangrams to practice, since pangrams are sentences including all letters. (The other fun is creating my own pangrams:
Five human wizards opt to query six black jaguars-
Just carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, quicksilver, wolfram, platinum, zinc-
Knights love mint syrup - cold queen prefers topaz jewel box.)
