Bridge To The ONT Thread

This is a test. Can you resist commenting? I doubt it, but there are some who think you have some semblance of self control.

I'm not one of them.

Can you last 15 minutes? Inquiring minds want to know.

Saw a great video of that in my college physics class -- self-destructing owing to resonant frequencies caused by wind (kind of like the GOP Congress).

20 The only casualty of that bridge collapse was a dog inside a car in the middle of the bridge. When the bridge started swaying wildly, the owner abandoned his car and ran for his life. He tried to get the dog to come with him, but the poor thing was terrified and refused to budge.

I understand that a legal defense fund's been set up, but the pressure may be on him to knuckle under and bend the knee to Eichenwald by accepting a plea deal.

Posted by: Huckleberry Hound at March 23, 2017 10:32 PM (UsCnO)

65 Yes, same engineer as the Golden Gate, and the Golden Gate suffered from the same problem. The resonance-induced swaying grew to a point that they had to close the bridge for a month. Then they installed a stiffening trussed understructure, which cured the problem. The need for such under structure is one reason double-decking suspension bridges became common - if you have to build the stiffening structure anyway, you might as well get some use out of it.
