Well, spring is here, and that means it's time for spring sports. Baseball? Perhaps, the US is in the finals of the World Baseball Classic for the first time. ETA USA just went up 2-0 Around here, however, spring means lacrosse, and the season is in full swing. Here's a nifty trick play from the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (who were crushed by my Towson Tigers a week and a half ago-YAY!).I hate the Hop, but I'll give them their due, they've been the gold standard in lacrosse for a long time now. Hey Horde! We're back from visiting Joyce, Hubby and Daughter.
Joyce continues to improve physically: she's able to use a walker to walk 10 or so feet at a time (she did this several times while we were there - truly a miracle).
She's also able to use her right hand extensively: to eat and gesticulate, very wide range of motion. Also wonderful, but her right leg/foot remain problematic.
She's speaking more in complete sentences, but is still frustrated that she's getting names wrong and having trouble finding words. However, her vocabulary *has* improved: she said "paranoid" and "fascinating."
Hubby cooked several dinners for us, including a wonderful skewered-chicken recipe that was both tender and delicious (Aside to CBD: Jamie Oliver's Chicken Tandor). Joyce (and Daughter) tell me he's becoming quite the gourmet chef.
Joyce is now completely off her chemo and radiation in preparation for scans early next month.
On April 3rd she'll have both an MRI and an MRI Perfusion to determine whether the treatment has been effective.
*Please* continue to pray for courage and strength for Joyce and her family.

Yeah. I made a W->E transatlantic (no vulgar jokes, if you please) crossing in the aftermath of a very grim E->W crossing. Passengers had sustained broken arms from falling. A ship's bell display item, which was on a hanger in a grand stairway, had swung back and forth so hard that the framework was beaten up.
I had a little conversation with the captain about it, and he acknowledged that it had been a rough trip. "Not as bad though', he said, "as the time that we encountered a 90 foot rogue wave". That one caved in the foredeck, and the ship had to be put in for repairs before sailing again.
Later I looked it up, and sure enough, the incident had been well-recorded.

Speaking of computers and chess, Roger Penrose (physicist and mathematician extraordinaire) has come up with an interesting puzzle. Penrose (and while I don't really know enough to really have an informed opinion, I agree with him) believes there is something special about human consciousness, something that current physics can't really explain. He (and others) think that consciousness, the true self-awareness, the "I am" involves quantum phenomena. There are those who think this is nonsense, of course, that no macroscopic system like the brain can exhibit such properties.
Well, I'll get to rambling too much, but he's come up with a chess problem that no computer can solve. But he says a human can, and it's devised to show that human consciousness is indeed showing "quantum properties".

This has nothing to do with whether it is moral or not - one would think this would trump the question of convenience...but it does not, primarily because enough people just don't want to think about it.
Of course there are a substantial number of liberals that support abortion for a different reason. I've found on numerous occasions that if the abortion supporters believes me to be one as well (and I am good at pretending to be a liberal when I want to be), they will eventual opine that the real reason "we" need abortion is to stop all those brown people from having kids. Why, they are virtual human weeds that won't stop reproducing!

Here's a brief history of the early years of The Three Stooges, just the parts that illustrate what I'm saying about Shemp...
It began with Moe and Larry working in Ted Healy's vaudeville act. They later brought in Moe's little brother Shemp, and The Three Stooges were born.
Healy later got pissed at the Stooges for taking on movie work without his approval, and they quit his act to strike out on their own. This when they signed their deal to make shorts for Columbia Pictures.
Moe later made up with Healy, and they agreed to work together again.
Shemp, however, was not having this. He really didn't get along with Healy, and refused to go back to work with him.
This is when Moe's other little brother Curly was brought in to replace Shemp. Shemp, meanwhile, struck out on his own for a fairly successful solo acting career.
Later, Ted Healy died as a result of getting in a fight with Wallace Beery and Albert Broccoli in the parking lot at a bar where Healy had been celebrating the birth of his baby son.
Fast forward a few years... Curly died from a stroke. Shemp gave up his solo acting career to return to the Stooges, because his brother Moe needed him.
It's worth noting, here, that The Three Stooges had a really shitty contract with Columbia. Shemp could've actually done better for himself on his own. But he came back to work with Moe, because Moe needed him.
Shemp gave up a chance to do better for himself because his brother Moe needed him.
So, yeah, I sort of resent it when people refer to Shepherd Smith as "Shemp Smith". Shepherd Smith isn't fit to hand-wash the jockstrap of a quality human being like Shemp Howard.

Columbia was a shitty movie company; pretty much the one thing they did well was pulling the wool over the Stooges' eyes and convincing them they weren't nearly as popular as they actually were. The Stooges basically kept Columbia from going bankrupt in the '50s. Columbia's movies were pretty much all terrible, but they were marketed as having the latest Three Stooges short bundled with them, and that's why Columbia survived that decade.

I was off frying up the best potato pancake I've ever made. Roasted some potatoes, an onion and a bunch of garlic erarlier. Passed all that through a food mill, added egg, butter scallons and s&p. Fried patty up in more butter - the only thing I'm missing is sour cream.
Awesome midnight snack (at 2 AM).

I never understood why they are even allowed to vote in primaries. If they aren't allowed to send any electors in the general and have no federal offices they can elect then they really have no business doing anything in the primaries. But ... some people and some courts decided, at some point, that people who have no say in the general should, somehow, be able to effect things in party primaries. "Strange", to put it mildly.

My feelings are mixed. These remakes tend to grab people by what they fondly remember, whether they offer more of what was good.
The 1995 movie had a good story ... but that isn't what makes the movie exceptional. GITS has amazing animation. The backgrounds as good as any animated movie ever made. It's really outstanding, as explained by Nerdwriter.

Once I read that, I dropped the self-imposed guilt trip from a certain December-to-April two years ago. I just put together such charmingly themed Christmas trees, that year it had seemed a pity to box them up after a month.

he's apparently convinced i'm just another drunken, drug addicted vet who needs to be dried out and shown the error of his ways. which is funny, because i've never asked anyone at the VA for pain meds. as i told someone there the other day "i live in Los Angeles, i'm married and i come to the VA for my healthcare.... of COURSE i drink."
he sent me in for an abdomen ultrasound the fryday, and, when i had my blood w*rk drawn the other day for a dose change in my hypertension, he slid in a drug screen too, which the jerks at the lab didn't mention, not that i GAF about them drawing it, but since i asked what all they were drawing for, which i always do, for safety AND curiosity, it means they lied to me. i'll be taking that issue to Quality Management.
well, he sure had reason to drink when he got all the results back, 'cause, other than "canibanoids" the drug screen was clean, and the radiology report says my liver is normal size and, other than a small area of fatty infiltration, everything is fine.
F you, Dr Alphabet. i TOLD you my liver is awesome!
