Let's see if anyone can tell the difference! SPRING! Well, spring is here, and that means it's time for spring sports. Baseball? Perhaps, the US is in the finals of the World Baseball Classic for the first time. They're playing Puerto Rico for the championship (which is just wrong. Puerto Rico is part of the United States, why should they have their own team?), and right now the score is 0-0 in the top of the 3rd. ETA USA just went up 2-0 Around here, however, spring means lacrosse, and the season is in full swing. Here's a nifty trick play from the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (who were crushed by my Towson Tigers a week and a half ago-YAY!).I hate the Hop, but I'll give them their due, they've been the gold standard in lacrosse for a long time now. That makes Towson beating them two out of the last three years even more sweet. NEWS And now for the weather, from our intrepid meteorologist, Elmer Sklue. Elmer? EVERYTHING'S BIGGER IN TEXAS Even hearts. Texas Farmers, Ranchers Overwhelmingly Answer Call to Aid Panhandle Wildfire Victims Last Thursday, after half-a-million acres were ravaged by wildfires that claimed four lives, state officials announced 4,200 large round bales of hay were needed to feed displaced livestock.Stories like this just convince me that I'm right in my belief that we don't need government to “help” us out by taking over, we can do just fine on our own. Even in a disaster the size of Katrina (which was exacerbated by the failure of local government), the evil Wal-Mart corporation had semis full of relief supplies on the road from Arkansas before the rain even stopped. FEMA, of course, didn't know what to do with them when they arrived and shunted them off into parking lots. Gee fellas, thanks a lot. ARTS AND CRAFTS The Lady in Blue Interesting story about recreating the dress found in the grave of a 10th century Viking woman. They used traditional materials (and some modern tools, such as a Lendrum spinning wheel. My wife has one of those) to recreate the dress. It's fascinating what we can discover about day to day life from mundane discoveries. In fact, it was the discovery of a stone drop spindle in Newfoundland that gave the first tangible proof of a Viking presence in the New World. (At L'Anse aux Meadows, which is a long, long, LONG way away from anything. If you're ever in Newfoundland, however, it's a must see. I was there last summer and it's FASCINATING. One of the rangers there told me a funny story about Leif Erikson. It seems that after the Vikings left L'Anse aux Meadows, he returned to his native village in Iceland, he found that he had been taken off the village rolls. He couldn't participate in the governance of the village, he couldn't even vote! He went to the scribe who kept the records to complain. The scribe researched the matter and came back and told him “I'm sorry, I must have taken Leif off my census.” ) VACATION, ALL I EVER WANTED If Newfoundland isn't your thing, how about a cruise? Modern cruise ships are a luxury to behold, but no matter how nice they are, they still have to set out into King Neptune's realm. Most of the time, that's a walk in the park. Sometimes it isn't. Baby Sister Update:
Hey Horde! We're back from visiting Joyce, Hubby and Daughter. Joyce continues to improve physically: she's able to use a walker to walk 10 or so feet at a time (she did this several times while we were there - truly a miracle). She's also able to use her right hand extensively: to eat and gesticulate, very wide range of motion. Also wonderful, but her right leg/foot remain problematic. She's speaking more in complete sentences, but is still frustrated that she's getting names wrong and having trouble finding words. However, her vocabulary *has* improved: she said "paranoid" and "fascinating." Hubby cooked several dinners for us, including a wonderful skewered-chicken recipe that was both tender and delicious (Aside to CBD: Jamie Oliver's Chicken Tandor). Joyce (and Daughter) tell me he's becoming quite the gourmet chef. Joyce is now completely off her chemo and radiation in preparation for scans early next month. On April 3rd she'll have both an MRI and an MRI Perfusion to determine whether the treatment has been effective. *Please* continue to pray for courage and strength for Joyce and her family. Thank you! Posted by: ibguy at March 22, 2017 10:00 PM (vUcdz) 21

Trump accused of hysteria about migrants from Guetemala and El Salvador, two of the most crime-ridden cesspools in the world. Once I was a sentimental thing,
Threw my heart away each spring, Now a spring romance hasn't got a chance Promised my first dance to winter, All I've got to show?s a splinter for my little fling! Spring this year has got me feeling like a horse that never left the post, I lie in my room staring up at the ceiling, Spring can really hang you up the most! Morning?s kiss wakes tres and flowers, And to them I'd like to drink a toast, I walk in the park just to kill lonely hours, Spring can really hang you up the most. All afternoon those birds twitter twit, I know the tune, "this is love, this is it!" Heard it before and I know the score, And I've decided that spring is a bore! Love seemed sure around the new year, Now it's April, love is just a ghost, Spring arrived on time, only what became of you, dear? Spring can really hang you up the most! Spring can really hang you up the most! Spring is here, there?s no mistaking Robins building nests from coast to coast; My heart tries to sing so they won?t hear it breaking, Spring can really hang you up the most! College boys are writing sonnets, In the "tender passion" they're engrossed, But I'm on the shelf with last years Easter bonnets, Spring can really hang you up the most! Love came my way, I hope it would last, We had our day, now that's all in the past! Spring came along a season of son, Full of sweet promise but something went wrong! Doctors once prescribed a tonic, "sulfur and molasses" was the dose, Didn't help a bit, my condition must be chronic, Spring can really hang you up the most! All alone, the party's over, Old man winter was a gracious host, But when you keep praying for snow to hide the clover Spring can really hang you up the most! Cruiseliner hit by 30ft waves and 150mph winds
--------- Yeah. I made a W->E transatlantic (no vulgar jokes, if you please) crossing in the aftermath of a very grim E->W crossing. Passengers had sustained broken arms from falling. A ship's bell display item, which was on a hanger in a grand stairway, had swung back and forth so hard that the framework was beaten up. I had a little conversation with the captain about it, and he acknowledged that it had been a rough trip. "Not as bad though', he said, "as the time that we encountered a 90 foot rogue wave". That one caved in the foredeck, and the ship had to be put in for repairs before sailing again. Later I looked it up, and sure enough, the incident had been well-recorded. Speaking of computers and chess, Roger Penrose (physicist and mathematician extraordinaire) has come up with an interesting puzzle. Penrose (and while I don't really know enough to really have an informed opinion, I agree with him) believes there is something special about human consciousness, something that current physics can't really explain. He (and others) think that consciousness, the true self-awareness, the "I am" involves quantum phenomena. There are those who think this is nonsense, of course, that no macroscopic system like the brain can exhibit such properties. Well, I'll get to rambling too much, but he's come up with a chess problem that no computer can solve. But he says a human can, and it's devised to show that human consciousness is indeed showing "quantum properties". Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at March 22, 2017 10:44 PM (aKqWT) 291

Abortion is primarily legal because it is a convenience.
This has nothing to do with whether it is moral or not - one would think this would trump the question of convenience...but it does not, primarily because enough people just don't want to think about it. Of course there are a substantial number of liberals that support abortion for a different reason. I've found on numerous occasions that if the abortion supporters believes me to be one as well (and I am good at pretending to be a liberal when I want to be), they will eventual opine that the real reason "we" need abortion is to stop all those brown people from having kids. Why, they are virtual human weeds that won't stop reproducing! Posted by: 18-1 at March 22, 2017 10:45 PM (aZq03) 303

Tennessee gets extra credit, I think for having "Rocky Top" as its state song:
Wish that I was on ol' Rocky Top, down in the Tennessee hills; Ain't no smoggy smoke on Rocky Top; Ain't no telephone bills; Once I had a girl on Rocky Top; Half bear, other half cat; Wild as a mink, but sweet as soda pop, I still dream about that; Once two strangers climbed ol' Rocky Top, lookin' for a moonshine still; Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top; Reckon they never will; Corn won't grow at all on Rocky Top; Dirt's too rocky by far; That's why all the folks on Rocky Top get their corn from a jar; I've had years of cramped-up city life Trapped like a duck in a pen; All I know is it's a pity life Can't be simple again. Chorus Rocky Top, you'll always be home sweet home to me; Good ol' Rocky Top; Rocky Top, Tennessee; Rocky Top, Tennessee. If that ain't the Moron Lifestyle, I don't know what is. It's difficult to take a high road about immigrant terrorists in London, because London is no stranger to terrorism, but most of its terrorism came from the whites across the Irish Sea. Many cities can claim (rightly) that terrorism didn't arrive until the Mohammedans did, but that argument just doesn't work in the UK. Posted by: Rusty Nail at March 22, 2017 10:52 PM (S2VsH) 351

#194: Please, don't refer to Shepherd Smith as Shemp. Shemp Howard was a real stand-up guy, a quality dude. Shep Smith isn't fit to scrape dogshit off of Shemp's shoes.
Here's a brief history of the early years of The Three Stooges, just the parts that illustrate what I'm saying about Shemp... It began with Moe and Larry working in Ted Healy's vaudeville act. They later brought in Moe's little brother Shemp, and The Three Stooges were born. Healy later got pissed at the Stooges for taking on movie work without his approval, and they quit his act to strike out on their own. This when they signed their deal to make shorts for Columbia Pictures. Moe later made up with Healy, and they agreed to work together again. Shemp, however, was not having this. He really didn't get along with Healy, and refused to go back to work with him. This is when Moe's other little brother Curly was brought in to replace Shemp. Shemp, meanwhile, struck out on his own for a fairly successful solo acting career. Later, Ted Healy died as a result of getting in a fight with Wallace Beery and Albert Broccoli in the parking lot at a bar where Healy had been celebrating the birth of his baby son. Fast forward a few years... Curly died from a stroke. Shemp gave up his solo acting career to return to the Stooges, because his brother Moe needed him. It's worth noting, here, that The Three Stooges had a really shitty contract with Columbia. Shemp could've actually done better for himself on his own. But he came back to work with Moe, because Moe needed him. Shemp gave up a chance to do better for himself because his brother Moe needed him. So, yeah, I sort of resent it when people refer to Shepherd Smith as "Shemp Smith". Shepherd Smith isn't fit to hand-wash the jockstrap of a quality human being like Shemp Howard. Much of the "wiretapped" "controversy" from the left seems to come down to:
http://tinyurl.com/lokwl6j "Trump said I blew my nose on a Kleenex when everybody knows I use Puffs." As for the "Incidentals" I'll repeat links on a couple of willowed comments of mine. http://tinyurl.com/lxcsrup "U.S. communications increasingly travel across U.S. borders --- or are stored beyond them. For example, the Google and Yahoo e-mail systems rely on networks of "mirror" servers located throughout the world. An e-mail from New York to New Jersey is likely to wind up on servers in Brazil, Japan and Britain. The same is true for most purely domestic communications. Executive Order 12333 contains nothing to prevent the NSA from collecting and storing all such communications --- content as well as metadata --- provided that such collection occurs outside the United States in the course of a lawful foreign intelligence investigation. No warrant or court approval is required, and such collection never need be reported to Congress." http://tinyurl.com/mfwtsnq "... NSA's upstream collection -- the latter of which pulls communications directly from domestic internet backbones. The upstream collection has no targets. Instead, it grabs everything it can (including audio communications) and sorts through it for targeted terms, as well as anything related to the targeted terms NSA analysts add to the filter. #453: I hadn't heard about that, so I won't comment on it. I just know that going back to The Three Stooges was a sacrifice on Shemp's part, and he did it because he loved his brother.
When the Stooges first signed their contract with Columbia, they were paid $50,000 for each short they produced. Guess how much they were making for each short 30 years later when they parted ways with Columbia? $50,000. Columbia was a shitty movie company; pretty much the one thing they did well was pulling the wool over the Stooges' eyes and convincing them they weren't nearly as popular as they actually were. The Stooges basically kept Columbia from going bankrupt in the '50s. Columbia's movies were pretty much all terrible, but they were marketed as having the latest Three Stooges short bundled with them, and that's why Columbia survived that decade. And as Ra's barge enters the third hour of night, a great door opens. Here Osiris judges the dead. Anubis challenges the recently dead to confess. The deceased recites from the Book of the Dead denials of any wrong doing. There is a giant scale, on one side is placed the heart while the other side holds a feather. As the heart sinks with all its sins, Geb sits waiting. If the heart dips far enough, Geb will devour it thus condemning the deceased.

They didn't know what to do with Harding so they let her skate ... and she broke a lace and cried and begged the judges to skate over (which I think they let her do). If I remember correctly (and I might not) I thought that was the Olympics where the rampant ice skating cheating was going on between the Frog and Russkie judges. Maybe that was a different Olympics ... who knows. I pretty much stopped watching the Winter Olympics around then. The last summer games I really watched was Seoul, which was a disgrace and a half. I never understood why they are even allowed to vote in primaries. If they aren't allowed to send any electors in the general and have no federal offices they can elect then they really have no business doing anything in the primaries. But ... some people and some courts decided, at some point, that people who have no say in the general should, somehow, be able to effect things in party primaries. "Strange", to put it mildly. Between Chesley Clinton, Kamala Harris and Keith Ellison, it's like they are TRYING to give us the next 8 years. Let's hope we can do something to reverse the rot in that little bit of time. The first five minutes of ScarJost in a Shell
https://youtu.be/HlXuACzsPcw My feelings are mixed. These remakes tend to grab people by what they fondly remember, whether they offer more of what was good. The 1995 movie had a good story ... but that isn't what makes the movie exceptional. GITS has amazing animation. The backgrounds as good as any animated movie ever made. It's really outstanding, as explained by Nerdwriter. https://youtu.be/gXTnl1FVFBw Posted by: BourbonChicken at March 23, 2017 03:03 AM (VdICR) 745

Bourbon Chicken, that is the problem with this live action movie. They are merely remaking the first movie with the gynoid Geishas from the first Standalone Complex episode with a bit of 'you don't know who you are!' being yelled at Kusanagi along with the originally manga deleted lesbian scene apparently.
And Adam Savage proves he's a fan-boi with no real appreciation with this clip of Weta's work on the movie. Someone has decided the gynoid Geishas should be a bit weird. Instead of Uncanny Valley uncomfortable, the decision has been to go horror movie kinda. How else to explain this giant two-prong power cord sticking out the the mouth of one. Or to represent the FUTURE another of the gynoid Geisha face opens like a flower to reveal gears and cogs more fitting with an Automata from several centuries ago. https://youtu.be/KosBvDyWgnA Posted by: Anna Puma at March 23, 2017 03:54 AM (/ONEL) 755

Posted by: Miley, the Duchess at March 23, 2017 03:37 AM Carrie Fisher kept a fully-decorated tree up year 'round. Once I read that, I dropped the self-imposed guilt trip from a certain December-to-April two years ago. I just put together such charmingly themed Christmas trees, that year it had seemed a pity to box them up after a month. Of course, I was also in the grip of a terrible depression, and the trees managed to lift my spirits. Knowing something of Carrie's own battles, I venture to say, her reasons were the same. now i'm doing the happy dance...
my new PCP at the VA us a whiny Thai dude with an addicition fixation... he apparently did a rotation at the Big Stone Mother (LAC-USC) where he spent time with the end of the line Skid Row types, which apparently traumatized him. he's apparently convinced i'm just another drunken, drug addicted vet who needs to be dried out and shown the error of his ways. which is funny, because i've never asked anyone at the VA for pain meds. as i told someone there the other day "i live in Los Angeles, i'm married and i come to the VA for my healthcare.... of COURSE i drink." he sent me in for an abdomen ultrasound the fryday, and, when i had my blood w*rk drawn the other day for a dose change in my hypertension, he slid in a drug screen too, which the jerks at the lab didn't mention, not that i GAF about them drawing it, but since i asked what all they were drawing for, which i always do, for safety AND curiosity, it means they lied to me. i'll be taking that issue to Quality Management. well, he sure had reason to drink when he got all the results back, 'cause, other than "canibanoids" the drug screen was clean, and the radiology report says my liver is normal size and, other than a small area of fatty infiltration, everything is fine. A long time ago I was working a temp job at a well-known tire manufacturer that rhymes with Shmunlop. I got a full-time permanent job and was working out the last 2 days at the tire plant when my supervisor informed me: "You've been working here 3 weeks and I haven't sent you for your drug screening yet. The bosses are on my ass big time. You have to go on Friday."
I said: "But as I told you days ago, Friday is my last day here." He said: "It's red tape. I could get in trouble. You get paid for it. Just go in the morning and then come work out the rest of the day." I said: "OK, cards on the table, I'm going to fail it for weed." He laughed and said: "They won't have the results back till after you're gone for the day. " So, I had to go take this completely meaningless drug test on my last day at a temp job because of corporate red tape. On Monday I came home from my first day at my new job to find an ominous message on my voicemail: "The is Lab, please call us immediately concerning your drug screening." Because they have to inform you that you failed. I just laughed and deleted it. Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at March 23, 2017 05:40 AM (ul9CR) 780

Our first of many Regent Seven Seas cruises was in the Mediterranean. The overnight haul to Venice on the Adriatic ran into high seas and 90 MPH winds. We laid in bed at a cant eyes glued to ship telemetry all night. After seven cruises, that has been the only challenge. This isn't an endorsement of Regent. They've since been taken over by Oceania, mainly a Euro-focussed line with way too big ships. So, don't know if Regent has been downgraded or not.
