Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Ted Cruz Grills Neil Gorsuch on The Ultimate QuestionKind of amusing, in a geeky way. The left is freaking out because this is obviously an effort to "humanize" Gorsuch and make him "relatable." That, they believe, is a dishonest strategy, because it takes away from their own strategy of dehumanizing Gorsuch and making him unrelatable. I mean, when Al Franken was attempting to prove Gorsuch's deep partisanship based on his knocking on doors in support of his mother's bid for local minor office when Gorsuch was 8 years old, that was plainly a line of questioning just based on facts and evidence. So much so that Gorsuch rolled his eyes at the unfunny former TV monkeyclown. But Cruz's attempt to distract from Gorsuch's campaigning-for-mom scandal was just out of bounds, wasn't it?:
President Trump signed a bipartisan bill Tuesday that funds NASA programs and maps out a plan to send a manned mission to Mars. The NASA Transition Authorization Act, which was co-authored by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., distributes $19.5 billion for the space agency’s 2018 fiscal year (beginning Oct. 1). The bill also calls for NASA to draft a plan for a manned mission to Mars in the 2030s. The bill closely aligns with Trump’s $19.1 billion budget proposal for the agency. Money will be delegated for deep space exploration, refining the International Space Station, commercial partnerships, and planning for the mission to Mars. The bill also "authorizes a space technology program" the White House said in a statement. "It is the first time in seven years we've had a NASA authorization bill," Sen. Cruz said, joking with President Trump that he could now "send Congress to space." "We could. What a great idea that could be," Trump responded.I'm sure CNN's Jake Tapper will be hyperventilating about Trump "threatening" members of Congress with being space-keelhauled. First, we don't need to dick around in space, Glenn Reynolds and other science groupies notwithstanding. We've got better uses for the money right here on Earth, such as paying down some of our massive debt. Second, speaking of dicking around in space, NASA has obviously gone all-in on that. I've heard rumblings that there have been averted WMDs attacks for example - where they caught chemical weapons and in one case a dirty bomb in the ports (the latter supposedly caught in San Diego port). He overplayed being Jesus-y in an appeal to Evangelicals especially in his bid to win the early Southern primaries.
People say this, but the truth is, if you listened to his speeches and comments he didn't actually bring it up much. I'm reminded of a story Billy Graham once told. He said he was in a Pro-Am golf tournament paired with a big name golfer at the time. At the end of the round, they shook hands and parted ways and he later heard that the pro was grousing at the bar later. Someone asked the pro how it was to golf with Graham and he snarled "it was lousy, he wouldn't shut up about Jesus." Eventually, the pro admitted that Graham hadn't said a word about faith, Jesus, the Bible, or God. He just had shot a lousy round and was angry. And maybe his own conscience was bothering him by hanging ou with a minster of the Gospel. Other people talked about Cruz and God a lot, especially Beck, and they brought up stupid crap about God's choice. But Cruz himself? not so much. That's very honest of you. Thanks. Speaking from my perspective as a Christian, all Christians struggle with this. We all of have people who just did some really bad things to us and it's hard to forgive, and we all know some of the people in power have done some incredibly bad things,. Forgiveness/love for enemies is a process . The fact that you are praying to God to change your heart is a really good start. My suggestion is twofold. Stay in love with God: and do those spiritual disciplines like quiet time, breath prayer, "Lord Jesus Christ; have mercy on me a sinner." reading scripture, devotional reading, attending a prayer /accounatbality group. Pray that the people you hate may have a conversion so that they are filled with the fruit of the Spirit along with asking God to increase the fruit of the Spirit within you. Also, ask God to help ou to see them as God sees them: Here's another really practical suggestion. It's not one I'm good at myself, but I'm better at being more loving through God' grace when i do this. Get off the computer for a while. Don't read the newspapers Don;t watch news and pray, pray, pray and engage in listening to music which is uplifting. I plan to of this starting Saturday through until Easter: here are some other thoughts from an article on the internet: http://tinyurl.com/lae7tvv This Christian stuff is really hard sometimes, Pray for me too that I become more loving and I will pray for you Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 23, 2017 05:08 PM (fDdVG) 168

Posted by: Ignoramus at March 23, 2017 05:02 PM (SIY7D) First, agreed on the PR aspect, which is kinda what I was ranting about. Second, true enough about the benefits of pure research, but I doubt that NASA is doing much of any in pure research in space any more. Yeah, there used to be questions about what would happen if you did various biological experiments and such in zero G, but I expect that those questions have pretty much been answered by now. Third, we need a cost benefit analysis. A research grant to a PI here on terra firma would typically last three years, come in under $1 million, and potentially bear meaningfully on life here on earth. One million dollars is probably what NASA pays for the toilets that let astronauts crap in zero G without ... uh ... repercussions. Manned space flights are not only much better for information gathering, but dealing with emergencies. When an unmanned device goes bad... its just space debris. "If that's the tone and content of what you've got, I'd say that says more about you than Ted Cruz or his campaign."
If you run your campaign with an emphasis on appealing to co-religionists "vote for me, your faith is my faith" you risk alienating those who aren't of your faith. Cruz's strategy was to take this risk in the hope of winning a lot of the early Southern primaries. It didn't work because most Evangelicals saw through it. Had it worked, and Cruz gotten the nomination he would have gotten killed in the general. You seem to be saying that's not what Cruz did -- that he didn't make a big play for Evangelicals -- but that's belied by the facts. I mostly like Cruz but he has limited appeal as a national candidate. He got suckered by the Romney gang who played to his vanity and got him to turn Evan McMuffin for a few months. OT, sorry, but from a Bloomberg dispatch citing anonymous WH source, the WH "final offer" to "conservatives" on the House bill reportedly has language "repealing the so-called essential benefits requirements in Obamacare for the individual market only, not for employer-based plans".
Two "WTFs?" here. WTF No. 1: if this - which is the heart of the matter, the meat, the idiocy that has destroyed the individual market and driven premiums out of reach - can be repealed via reconciliation, then there *must* be some WH/Senate plan to muscle through any "germaneness" problems (parliamentarian's ruling on whether language fits within Budget Act rules for such a bill). Which also means *anything* could be put in this bill. WTF No. 2: why repeal the disastrous stuff only for the individual market, and not for employer plans? Again, this is the key poison driving hyper-inflation of premiums and worsening of other basics (deductibles etc.). Heartening to see that some "hold-outs" (apparently) were looking for immediate relief for the devastated individual market, but puzzling, overall. Fucked up situation. The guy had a dream. And his dream (a very cool one) was using a cannon instead of rockets to sent things into space. He developed some absolutely amazing artillary in Barbados, then the CIA arranged for him to sell some to South Africa (which they used to great effect against Angola). Then the CIA threw him under the bus, and he was arrested and jailed for selling arms to South Africa. After that, he couldn't get any western country to fund his space cannon. But Saddam was floating on oil money, and though he had only passing interest in using a cannon to put things into orbit, he did need a very smart guy to improve his scud missiles, so that was the deal. Then Israel decided they couldn't have Bull improving Saddam's scuds, so they murdered him in Brussels. Posted by: Rusty Nail at March 23, 2017 06:19 PM (S2VsH) 351
