Trump Bans Carrying Electronic Devices on Flights From 8 Airports in Majority-Muslim Countries

The airports named include one airport in Istanbul, which lies of course in Turkey, and is a NATO ally, or, maybe, "ally."

Here's the why:

Intelligence obtained in recent weeks found that an al Qaeda affiliate was perfecting techniques for hiding explosives in batteries and battery compartments of electronic devices, according to a US official.

The discovery that al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula was looking to exploit batteries and their compartments in laptops and other commercial electronic devices led the US and UK to ban devices larger than a cell phone from certain flights, the US official told CNN.

The new security restrictions, announced Tuesday, require airlines based in the Middle East and North Africa to prevent people flying from eight countries from bringing any device bigger than a smart phone on board their aircraft. Instead, those electronics need to be stored in the cargo hold.

The intelligence was discovered "in recent weeks?" Hmmm, why does that ring a bell?

U.S. special operations forces gathered valuable intelligence on the al-Qaida affiliate in Yemen in a raid last month, including data on the explosives they're manufacturing and the types of threats they're developing, a senior U.S. official said Tuesday.

President Donald Trump, in a speech to a joint session of Congress, sought to rebut the notion the raid didn't yield valuable information. Trump said he'd been reassured of that fact just before his speech by Defense Secretary James Mattis....

The U.S. official said a list describing the broad range of intelligence gains from the raid fills more than three pages. It includes information on al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula's training techniques and targeting priorities, said the official, who wasn't able to discuss details of the classified military operation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Such intelligence gives insight into the group's attack planning.

The UK and Canada are also ordering the ban on carry-on electronics from these airports. So they must be convinced as well.

I guess claims that the Yemen raid produced no significant intelligence was just more media/Deep State #FakeNews.

But this is all so anxiety producing. Let's have a bit of slapstick comedy to lighten the mood:

Interesting dilemma for the leftist judges now:

Their reasoning (or non-reasoning) for blocking the travel ban -- that Trump's EO was lawful but comments made by Rudy Giuliani proved he was animated by an impermissible discriminatory purpose -- applies equally here.

So: Do they permit it, and thereby undermine their travel ban decision?

Or do they dare strike it down -- knowing the entire judiciary will be discredited beyond repair should an Al Qaeda bomb take down a US-bound flight?

21 Ninth Circuit said that Trump had a Bad Heart and so upheld Seattle's knocking down the Old Travel Pause Order. Hawaii judge says the same thing about the New Travel Pause Order, ignoring the changes that were made, because Trump still has a Bad Heart.
So the Hawaii judge addresses, well, what must Trump do to not have a Bad Heart, so that he can do what Congress has already authorized him to do.

Answer is in footnote 17 of his opinion. Translating from High Legalese, a heartfelt public and abject apology by Trump to Muslims everywhere is required. And he must bring the judge a shrubbery

If the jihaidis can get enough explosive into a laptop to threaten a passenger jet, they're going to be able to get that laptop smuggled by ground to an origination airport outside of this short blacklist of origins.

At some point we either have to extirpate jihad entirely, or we go to the Israeli air security model.

(I've read an interview with one of the architects of said model. He points out that the security scheme we now use combines long delays and high cost with abject ineffectuality at stopping actual threats. The worst of all possible worlds.)

At some point we either have to extirpate jihad entirely, or we go to the Israeli air security model.

Deng also had affairs with Google exec Schmidt and Tony Blair, so she seems to be in all the right Lefty circles. I hate the idea of someone like Deng influencing Trump via Ivanka, but that's just pure speculation on may part, since I don't really know Ivanka's politics, either.

Will have to wait and see what influence, if any, she has on her dad.

SHe has constructed a Chinese wall inside her own mind (yes, experts at Chinese Walls can do that) to separate her civilian personality from any expertise on Chinese Walls that one of her other personalities might possess. 273 Gorelick is an attorney in private practice. She doesn't have a "government job" in the Trump administration. She is the legal advisor to Jared Kushner, Ivanka's husband and guided his divestitures in order to meet government rules and requirements regarding conflict of interest of government officials.

She has advised Ivanka in the same manner, which is why Ivanka is getting an unpaid job(like Kushner, in order to avoid nepotism charges) and an office in the WH and a security clearance. She is an advisor to her father, as she has been practically all her adult life. Since her husband works for the administration, the potential for charges to be laid by the Democrats that Ivanka was getting secret , classified information from her father and her husband was a very real risk.

I would remind you all of Anthony Weiner and his laptop full of Hillary emails via Huma Abedin.
As that case goes forward, one can easily see how a spouse who is the adult daughter of the president could be accused of being given classified information.

Gorelick is not there to advise policy to Trump or to Ivanka, She's serving as legal counsel to both Ivanka and Jared.

We can question the quality of that legal advice, but it's stupid to be carrying on about Ivanka pushing left wing policies through or Gorelick creating policies as an outside private attorney. That isn't what is happening.

Trump and family have been extraordinarily cautious about creating any conflict. Ivanka has removed her image from her own company and only acts as an advisor to it now on major business decisions, all day to day decisions are now up to the CEO and administration she left in place there. Those decisions have been advised by Gorelick. I believe, although I can't remember for certain,, that Gorelick advised Eric regarding closing his charity for St.Jude, even though he has no role at all in the administration, other than being Trump's son.

Here is Gorelick's bio and resume at her law firm,
Wilmer Hale. We can rightly complain about the policy she advocated of building a 'wall' between law enforcement agencies, but she is an acknowledged expert on legal ethics.

Noro is highly communicable, and (there's no delicate way to put this) it will swiftly have you spraying at both ends. The outcomes have been highly unpleasant, but not really dangerous.

325 309 SPeaking of ships, do they even have "ocean liner" service any more? That is, a dedicated ship designed for transoceanic passengers voyages? Cruise ships are just that, and they aren't built as tough as the old ocean liner standards were.

Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at March 21, 2017 09:30 PM (aKqWT)

Some of those cruise ships look incredibly top-heavy. I don't know how they would fare in a serious North Atlantic storm.

332 >>I listened to a Member of the Freedom Caucus today, and he did have a reasonable objection to this strategy. That is, the pendulum will swing the other way, and a Dem appointee could wipe out any changes. This was his argument for doing this with legislation instead of via the Secretary.

And that would be phase 3 as has been stated for about a year now.

It's the hardest thing to do because repealing legislation in the Senate takes 60 votes unless they nuke the filibuster. But they can gut Obamacare, which everyone who isn't a far left partisan already acknowledges is collapsing and removing the taxes and mandates will only insure it so the idea that they are some how propping up Obamacare is just stupid.

They are doing what they can in phase 1 through budget reconciliation which is exactly what they said they were going to do when they did it a year ago. But reconciliation can only be done for budgetary items and it therefore also can pass the Senate with 50 votes.

Conservatives in Congress either know this and are playing politics or they are fucking idiots. This was announced by Ryan as the plan when they put a similar repeal bill though Congress and to Obama's desk where he vetoed it last year. It's the same reason that Trump has wrapped his arms and tiny hands around it. It kills Obamacare all but in name only and that can be dealt with later in a much more difficult fight.

Win and move on. Make it perfect later.

It might be stupid but it's true. They aren't repealing shit.

Repealing BarkyCare is FAR more important than the Senate filibuster. FAR, FAR more. I can't believe anyone would even hesitate to kill the filibuster in order to actually repeal BarkyCare.

Not much if the ship's designer is competent. The last time an aircraft carrier (high freeboard, huge sail area) capsized in a storm was when?

352 201 We visited some friends in Temple, TX last May. They're trying to recruit us. The people are incredibly friendly, housing and the cost of living are dirt cheap compared to CA, there are relatively few progs (although the big city Austin is lousy with them, of course). After a week of 95% humidity, flat, and 90+ degrees every day, we decided that we couldn't take it.

Why can't Texans just swap states with CA? Hell, it could even be a hostile takeover...with no right of return.

357 JackStraw thanks for the detailed post on the O care situation. It's difficult for people who have never been involved in getting legislation passed to understand how it normally gets done. We haven't had a normal legislative process in Congress for eight years people forget that it has stages and processes. The Dems just rubber stamped their legislation then blocked most Republican efforts.

358 The judiciary is violating the separation of powers enshrined in the Constitution. If one of these people exploits the loophole they've created and ends up killing Americans, the responsibility can only be rightfully, squarely laid at their feet.

Of course, we're still too chickenshit to do anything about it, aren't we? Except for opining on the interwebs, of course.

359 From personal experience;

While they certainly should be tightening up security at some of these airports (particularly Kuwait, at which security is a joke), I'm shocked that they included Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is a USA preclearance airport. You literally enter US territory at the airport; USCIS customs, global entry, TSA, etc. The facility is to notch, and exudes professionalism.

It is especially goofy because of how bad security is at some of these other airports, and US flag carriers fly through other connecting hubs; I can get a united flight from Kuwait through Frankfurt, and carry a laptop on that won't get inspected at all, but if I fly Etihad through Abu Dhabi, where my laptop would get turned on an X-Ray'd, that's not good enough?

Weird.

The US should reward its allies that comply fully with directives, such as Abu Dhabi/UAE, while punishing wayward facilities that only pay lip service to security obligations.
