Quotes of The Day

Quote I

We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle. Winston Churchill

Quote II

People crushed by laws, have no hope but to evade power. If the laws are their enemies, they will be enemies to the law; and those who have most to hope and nothing to lose will always be dangerous. Edmund Burke

Quote III

Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties. Helen Keller

Put the federal government in charge of student loans and higher education and you get this: In 18 years, the cost of a college degree could approach $500,000.

Sorry I've forgotten my password. Civil Rights dilemma.

The US Third Circuit Court of Appeals today upheld a lower court ruling of contempt against a chap who claimed he couldn't remember the password to decrypt his computer's hard drives.

In so doing, the appeals court opted not to address a lower court's rejection of the defendant's argument that being forced to reveal his password violated his Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination.

Our maple syrup swilling, ice skating friends to the north aren't so friendly after all. Canadians want illegal aliens deported.

Nearly half of Canadians want to deport people who are illegally crossing into Canada from the United States, and a similar number disapprove of how Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is handling the influx, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Monday.

A significant minority, four out of 10 respondents, said the border crossers could make Canada “less safe,” underlining the potential political risk for Trudeau’s Liberal government.

Our country's environmental Nazis and do-gooders are battling private property owners in the SCOTUS. A WI family cannot sell it's land.

The Murr family owns two pieces of property on the St. Croix River in Wisconsin. They attempted to sell one of their waterfront lots (called “Lot E” to finance improvements to a cabin they own on the second plot (called “Lot F”. The value of Lot E had been assessed at $400,000. Environmental officials blocked the sale for violating conservation rules. A county board further declared that state law required the two lots be merged into a single piece of property that could not be broken up and sold in smaller parcels.

The ONT is not a big fan of FDR. Tomorrow March 22, 1933 FDR implements sin tax on Valu-Rite.

On this day in 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Beer and Wine Revenue Act. This law levies a federal tax on all alcoholic beverages to raise revenue for the federal government and gives individual states the option to further regulate the sale and distribution of beer and wine.

10 abandoned underground factories of WWII.

With the terror of aerial bombardments instilled in everyone, many of the factories at the time were built deep underground, where the enemy’s aerial armada couldn’t reach them. A number of abandoned underground factories of World War Two are still crumbling to dust some 70 years later, reminders of one of the darkest chapters in modern human history.

Rogue municipalities flaunt immigration laws. It is about time they paid a price. If they don't want to obey Federal Law perhaps they should have their Federal funding cut off.

Is Feminism a mental illness? 20 reasons why modern women are unstable and unhappy.

But in spite of it all, women today are actually less happy than their ancestors whom the feminists perceive as having been “oppressed,” and furthermore, many are becoming increasingly unstable, violent, and toxic as they poison themselves with the toxic ideology that is feminism.

The following points will show how feminism actually damages today’s women rather than help them.

Did you know there are 2,124 ways in which children annoy their parents. 1931 Child Research Centre research.

Back in 1931, Dr. Mandel Sherman, director of the Child Research Centre, wanted to find out the exact number of ways in which children annoy their parents. He came up with the oddly specific number of 2,124 different ways.

He arrived at this number by having a group of parents carry notebooks around with them for a week and record each time their child annoyed them.

Your humble Cob pleads the 5th.

Reason 2,125 in which a child annoys it's parents. Lesbians file lawsuit over annoying mix race child wrongful birth.

So when beautiful Peyton was born she did not have blonde hair or blue eyes. She was very obviously a mixed raced baby girl. The sperm bank had mistakenly picked the sperm of a black man instead.

Among Cramblett’s many nonsensical complaints she stated that now she would have to move to a community of people that were more diverse than the town she live in, in order to address Peyton’s needs.

82 Really interesting article about feminism and unhappiness.

Quite a while ago, I read that the real reason that women were forced into the labor market after WWII was for cheap labor. Companies realized that they could pay women less, and that worked for them in the long run.

In the meantime, women kind of got screwed. To get-- and keep-- a man, they were and are forced into working when they wanted to stay home and raise their families. It seems that outside of the upper classes, all women must be working women, which doesn't suit all women or benefit their husbands or children. In the meantime, many are falling apart, as evidenced in the article linked.

I certainly don't know if working outside of the home or "feminism" is to blame for this mental illness, but it makes one think.

I remember looking at some data on the Fed's FRED data system, and I noticed something about the labor participation rate. They had broken down by men and women.

Back in the old days, before we had women working much, the labor participation rate for men was very high, maybe 90%, IIRC. Women was very low, maybe 10%.

Then we had the revolution. The female participation rate started increasing steadily. The male rate starting coming down. It didn't come down as fast, but it was coming down. This meant the total participation rate was increasing.

And then it hit a wall, sort of, and the male rate started declining. The crash of '08 really did a number on it.

I had to look at the data again, but IIRC, I think there's sort of a natural participation rate. That is, you can have all the men working, and not many women. Or you can make it equal and that means more unemployed men.

I remember making that observation, and getting crucified as sexist on another forum one time.

Going to the census source document, they finally admit on about page 20 that they make no adjustments for regional cost of living differences, and don't count non-cash bennies in the poverty rates. Thus, food stamps, Section 8 housing, and many more etcs. doesn't get counted. It's a flat income level metric.

Feminists killed chivalry and dating - systems that protected them and supported their chance happiness in a lot of ways. The Tinder/hookup culture is not only emotionally unsatisfying, but gives men no incentive to stick around long enough to fall in love, consider any type of commitment and all the associated thing that go with that, such as marriage and kids (which factor into happiness). Naturally, being an an unpleasant feminist shrew also does that.

When I went to college we had a dining hall. Everyone got the same meal. Only one upperclassmen dorm had air conditioning, and the only academic building that had AC was the science building. It didn't bother us in the least. As for the administration, there were a hell of a lot less then than there are now, and the enrollment has only gone up about 15% in the last 30 years.

165 Instapundit often mentions that a big contributor to college tuition goes to administrative bloat. That's where the real cutting needs to happen.

I've also read that some student loans are used to cover living expenses, such as purchasing the latest iPad/iPhone, awesome spring break vacations, etc. So a number of these kids are borrowing money to pay for a lifestyle they have no hope of attaining on their own salary (especially if they have one of those silly degrees). Just think of those OWS tools with their latest tech and expensive clothes whining about student debt. I don't want to forgive loan money that was pissed away by the students living the high life while in school.

175 Alrighty, then. Here's my 2 cents. You know those old marriage vows that everybody decided were out of date? Turns out they work just fine.

Love, honor and OBEY. That's what women are supposed to do. Doesn't make you a doormat, or even an oppressed person. In fact, it frees you tremendously and leads to a great deal of happiness.

Don't get me wrong--my husband is NOT always correct nor does he have all the answers. He can't order me around or act like a tyrant, but by God, he is the head of our household and his word is final.

The pressure is all on him, not on me. Unless you try it, you won't know the freedom and complete lack of stress it entails. He asks my opinion, and I freely give it, and he usually is smart enough to take it, but he is the final arbiter.

I know this sounds positively medieval to some folks, but it works. When he screws up, he gets to fix it. I don't have to spend time or brain power determining our next move. I can just get on with life and all that entails, and it also guarantees we work as a team.

Sometimes being a woman and being smart mean not listening to our shrill and nasty feminist neighbors. I should hope most of us are more intelligent that that.

I've been deeply immersed in computer shit for the past few days. I got in the mood to update my Linux installations, which I had even booted in a while, and doing that, noticed the SMART tools showed a hard drive was getting iffy -- sector reallocations were increasing, and some other indicators. It wasn't near imminent failure, but I decided to replace it. That meant cloning all the partitions. Carefully. And getting all the windows and linux installations set up to use it. A tedious process.

And while doing that, I read that Windows 10 had a new Linux subsystem. It's similar to the old POSIX subsystem, and the SUA subsystem add-on they replace it with. But the difference is this one actually runs real Linux ELF binaries. There's a kernel driver that emulates the Linux kernel, and some NTFS tricks are done to give the subsystem a very Linux like file system picture. Very cool, so while I was doing all that, I did a Win 10 install.

And boy, was I creeped out. The good news was the Windows 8.1 key still worked and allowed a "free" upgrade activation. But the damn privacy shit... My God.

I had to fight it to create a regular old local account and not the MS "LIve" account it wants to create. Then carefully turn off all the data collection shit. Several pages of it, and I was seriously getting creeped out at what Microshit is doing.

And then Cortana, the voice activated "assistant". I had to turn that off. I have no microphone plugged in and thank God. If it sneaks and turns itself on, it can't hear anything.

But you ought to read the fine print on what Cortana does if you enable it fully.

When I was a little kid, I thought the Star Trek voice activated computer was so cool. Wouldn't that be great.... Well, no more. It's the creepiest damn thing to me now.

And even put aside the privacy shit, I cannot make myself talk to a damn machine/software. It's just the most uncomfortable thing to me. And I don't really understand why fully, but I don't want to talk to no damn computer.

Sure, it's not new. However, I would imagine that there's a higher % of people who are actively hooking up vs. dating today. I've been out of it for a few decades, so I'm only basing this on my own observation and what the media/entertainment shows (and stats on people marrying later, etc.), but it sure seems like it's more the norm than dating. Especially since feminism convinces women they must establish a career before settling down. Seems to a be a hostility toward things like marriage and kids more than in the past, and that must factor into how interested people are in dating vs. hooking up w/some random from tinder or your friend w/benefits.

When I spent a summer drink- er studying at the University of London, the digs were spartan. Hard cots and a desk. No private bathrooms or showers. You had to feed a meter with 5p pieces to get heat from the radiator (and in England in the summer, you frequently need it). A cafeteria with shit food. Want to relax and hang out? Go to a pub. From what I understand, European universities are still like that - and many of the students live at home and commute.

I've told college students who go on about "free" Euro unversities that they'd scream if they had barebones accommodations like that. I didn't mind, because my own place in the states was all milk cartons, boards and bricks and Goodwill furniture. But today? It must be a huge letdown when these kids graduate and get their own places and find they're not nearly as spacious and luxurious as their old college dorm room.

The constant rush to have sex earlier, with fewer attachments to the sex partner is real. Technology is helping to speed it up even more.

A decade or so from now, assuming no concerted effort to change course, we WILL be debating as a society whether or not it's wrong for adults to be having sex with children.

Were I not a decent human being, and not taken-aback by this? Things would have gotten complicated very quickly. I mean, damn. I was in my late thirties, early forties.

I had a sixteen year-old girl grab my ass while her Mother waited in the front. I told her, "You do that again and I'll give you a refund and ask you to leave."

I mean, Holy Shit?!?

I regret not telling her Mother about it. But she behaved in a proper fashion from then-on, because she knew I was pissed.

But today? 305 The two space thing was a product of the old typewriters which used monspaced fonts (such as we would call them now). Skinny letters used the same amount of space as a wide letters, and thus there would be visually close to one space in between letters sometimes. Using two spaces at the end of a sentence made it more readable by giving a wider space.

With proportional fonts, it's not a problem. Before the advent of the typewriter, I think printers/typesetters had standardized on one space, but their fonts were proportional. It was just the typewriter that brought monospacing to the forefront.

381 O.K. OT-So it's "Mr Hyde" son tonight who was up at 11;45 p.m EST. I said "Why are you up? You have to get up at 6:00 tomorrow" . He said "Because I took a nap this evening." I cannot watch him all the time. If he comes home tired out from running track and then having a cello lesson, he's bound to be at to some ridiculous hour. And he was having a problem with something he was trying to do for school on the computer Then he said "EFF off" and turned the light off on me. Spouse had gone to bed. He did say "Goodnight. I hate it when he says that ." I'm too sensitive sometimes, I guess.

The dorm I lived in was built in 1820, so creature comforts were a little different.

There was an attic in the dorm that you had to sneak into. When we were up there we saw a bunch of what looked like huge shelves. We found out later when we were talking with a lady that was the curator of the school museum that those shelves in the attic were actually the living quarters for slaves that belonged to students. Kind of creepy that they were still there 120 years after slavery ended being used for storage.

405 It's futile to nage adolescents about sleep hours. Their bio-clocks are wired to stay up late and sleep in - one reason highschools have moved to later start times and one reason high-acheiving homeschoolers look so well-rested to their public school equivalents. Since they really can't help the urge to stay up, its a a source of irritation, frustration and conflict. The sassing isn't ok, but I wonder if conflict doesn't have some side benefits, as in an increased tendency to separate from Mom and Dad in the optimal time-frame.

Fenelon, I believe my Mom would have informed me that I would not speak that way to her while I ate her food and lived under her roof and wore clothes bought by her.

This would not have been out of vanity or pride on her part, but because she felt there were appropriate ways to be and she didn't want me not behaving in that manner.
She would have also pointed out that in her opinion I was clearly overworked and needed to do less so I could focus on important things like schoolwork and respect. She could handle discipline like a scalpel.

That's a difference that I cannot relate to, but I was just a jackass kid. Perhaps saying "Your words matter", like my Mom did won't be enough.

She knew how to break me down and if I was being particularly obstinate, my Dad would take everything away from me that he could.

He would break me down further and tell me that I just insulted his Wife. Nobody, including snotty little jackasses did that.

420 And I'm not feeling too sanguine at the moment because I "just: within the past two weeks realized that someone I had been friends with for a year is a narcissist. They're not the malignant kind They' can be a very charming and talented person (as narcissists often can be) but I'm apparently around to make them laugh and inspire them and make them feel good about themselff, but this is now twice when I've had big medical issues and they're never acknowledged it or that I had been in the hospital. That would be true of narcissisist-They're impatient with illness in other people. Plus I have just realized things which they're said are really questionable-not about me, but about relationships in general "God is not your pal" (I agree with that. The hymn says "What a friend we have in Jesus " and it means he can bear our sins. Others can't) However, then the friend said, " Jesus in not your find whom you can't just have them around when you want them." I don't feel that way about my friends. It's not really that I want them around when i want them. W're just busy people and we drift in and out of each other's lives." Anyway, it's a bunch of stuff that I've put together and it hurts that I wasi so stupid not ton realize this before.

423 For those nostalgic for a manual typewriter or those who want to try one, there are plenty out there is you look. Ribbons are also available. I happen to think that they are one of the best tools for first drafts of creative writing, whether fiction or non-fiction. Get all your words on the paper and don't try to make corrections or edits. Just write and correct the text later. It takes getting used to the keys after years of computer keyboards but it isn't too bad.

I am no touch typist but I type faster and more accurately on a manual than with a computer. I also find them more comfortable to use for long periods.

And yes, I use two spaces after a period.

Narcissists are really hard to have in your life. I dated one for a short period, and it pretty much emotionally wrecked me. I also have to deal with a diagnosed narcissist in my job.

They are very much wolves in sheep's clothing. They seem like wonderful fun people and will do things with and for you. And then BAM! They're making your life really, really hard.

The work narcissist is still around; I only deal with him via email, and am trying to set boundaries.

I'm so sorry you're having difficulties with your son. I can't imagine how hard it is to raise a teenage boy, let alone one on the autism spectrum.

442 I'm sure long ago noted, but MisHum, "flout", not "flaunt" - a very common switcheroo error.

And to tie the ongoing judicial coup into the topic of punishing/changing "sanctuary" lawlessness: if the "courts" can casually, and with impunity (i.e., they are not repudiated) pull their audacious, lawless, baseless, indefensible, ridiculous usurpation of executive authority on immigration admissions, what makes anyone think they'll have any trouble completely negating anything Trump does to restore rule of law on "sanctuary" idiocy?

Someone ought to start a pool on when the legal establishment finally reaches the epiphany that "chaos" is what we have right now, "constitutional crisis" is what we have right now, it's not some distant hypothetical.

447 Fenelon: It never rains but pours. Naturally, your son acts out when all heck is breaking loose. This is life.

However, stop making excuses for him. He said something unacceptable, and needs to be held accountable. Some things require more than an apology, and this is one of those things. Men who disrespect women find life very difficult, eventually, and it starts at home.

I agree that this is a man to man talk that needs to take place, with consequences, whatever form that may take.

I'm put in mind of what my mom said to me. She told me she prays for me every night, but said she wouldn't tell me WHAT she prayed, precisely. Depended on my behavior. Yipes.

The good news is that, while it takes longer to grow up a boy child than a girl child, the can, eventually, grow up and move out.

Fenelon, have you ever read the book Emotional Vampires?

I highly recommend it. It's about personality disorders.

Even if a person is not a malignant narcissist, they are still extremely difficult to deal with. They are masters of disguise, and it's easy for us to care about their false self.

Becuase what they are presenting is a false self. And when you call them on it, they simply bail on you and move onto the next person in line. It's what they do.

Regular people are nothing but narcissistic supply to them, and that's something that's really hard for normal people to understand. Because it's not normal. These people are psychologically disordered. They are functional, but they are still disordered. It's not you; it's them.

All people with personality disorders are hard to deal with; the former boss was a diagnosed passive aggressive. He admitted that early in my employment- which is really inappropriate for a boss to disclose. I didn't think that meant anything until things started getting difficult with him. To this day, I suspect that he consistently lied to me about a lot of major things. I'll never know of course.

LOL. The one I have to deal with at work admitted it to me, and claims that he is "cured."

FYI, it can't EVER be cured.

He also has depression problems, might be slightly bipolar and at one point told me he was going to commit suicide. The boss was VERY unhappy about that, since he considers those sorts of threats abusive.

Which they were.

On the positive side, I've managed to gently glide the boss way from the Narcissist, and we have a lovely gentleman in Germany who is doing much of his work. BTW, the guy in Germany is much better at the job and easier to deal with.

Also, I've grown tired of inspirational quotes about grabbing your own happiness. There are too many people today who walk all over everyone else in their quest to assert their happiness and not enough trying to bring some of that joy to others. There's a reason why "You is important" was LAST on the list of things for Abileen in _The Help_ to remember in life, and "You is kind" was FIRST.

You is kind. You is smart. You is important.

Consider others. Use your intelligence to do that and other great things. Remember to care for yourself.

You're preaching to the choir.

I know way too many people who either have full disorders or border on them.

Many are very good at hiding it, and when their disorder rears its head, you go into shock, which I think is what happened to Fenelon. Then you blame yourself for not seeing it earlier. But they hide it from you, so many times you can't see it. And you brush things off and blame them on a person being stressed or quirky. Then they manipulate you and make you feel bad when you try to escape.

All of which is why my significant other is a cat.

478 gNewt, Trump also has plenary authority (basically unlimited, total discretion) to control admissions to the US on national security grounds.

Five judges just ripped that power from him, without a shred of legal or constitutional basis, at all.

So, no, the judicial coup now going unchallenged gives the judiciary plenary power over anything they choose, if they have the will to pursue it.

And with something like withholding appropriated federal funds from municipalities because they don't honor "detainers" from ICE, the courts probably wouldn't have to do anything as audacious and outrageous as their coup regarding admissions into the US.

I'm confident they could find some pathetically sophomoric, unpersuasive, bad faith "reasoning" based on existing law and precedent, judging by what passes for legal reasoning for some time now (from one side, that is).

People with personality disorders blame everyone around them for any interpersonal issues. They are perfect; everyone else is in the wrong.

You had luxury.

I only had a bunk bed, two desks, a large closet divided into 2 and a sink with mirror. The bathroom stalls, with locking doors, were down the hall and on the backside of the shower room. That shower room was like any high school gym locker shower room, an elevated concrete floor with a drainage ditch around the edges and maybe ten shower nozzles, five per side, without any walls/barriers. The pay phone was down the hall in a booth. In our room, our cook source was not a microwave nor a toaster oven but a popcorn popper. Cooked popcorn and heated soup in that thing. The mini fridge could hold beer, cheese and other minor essentials requiring refrigeration, although in the winter we hung the beer cans in a mesh laundry bag out the window. Cheese and crackers were a common late night study snack.

My Mom and I used a code on that pay phone so as not to pay for passing on info. When I drove the six hours to school, I'd call Mom collect if I got to school okay with no car troubles. She'd get a collect call from me, and it being collect knew I was okay and deny the charges. If I paid for the call, she knew there was a problem.

I lost a handful of "friends" when I got married. Being happy, I had nothing in common with them any longer. Then, of course, as things heated up politically during the Obama years, a few more sloughed off (liberal drama types). My hubby's death pretty much ditched the rest since I was no longer available to participate in their woes. My own were an enormous event horizon that they fled from.
It hurt at the time, since I was already feeling a great deal of self-pity. But I prayed a lot and "forgave" the selfishness and unkindness of certain individuals. Since there's nothing I can do about their behavior, all I can do is work on my own reaction. With God's help I made a lot of progress.
Now, my decks are more or less clear for a new start.

511 The underground factories link was very cool. As a teenager, I had one of those R1155 radios made in the Plessey factory (although mine may well have been made in Canada). It was a darned good receiver in its day. They were commonplace in surplus dealers in the early '60's.

512 And maybe I expect too much of people. The friend said that to me, "I have decided not to expect too much of people. That way I avoid disappointment. "which I think means, "If they do not immediately agree with what I you say and do it the way they want" you think they're hopeless. This friend has been high leadership positions. They're used to telling people what to do. It doesn't work so well inn a church.

We always pray in the morning. It's a wonderful time and in our time of thanksgiving. We do the ACTS method of prayer Adoration of God Confession in silence or if we;done something hurtful to each otherThanksgiving and Supplication. In the thanksgiving time I always express the ways in which I grateful to God for my husband. We really miss this time when we don't have it. We also spend a couple of minutes doing the Jesus prayer "Lord, Jesus Christ have mercy on me" with four breath in and six breaths out for a about three minutes. It's a wonderful tool for relaxation. i would find it impossible to be married to someone who did not share my faith.

Books don't need to; the typesetting process takes care of that. Two spaces after a period is a rule for typewriters. Good word processors should also make a slightly longer space at the end of a sentence.

522 so when i was playing catch-up, i found one of JJ's articles from this morning labeled: Once Again, Zero Evidence Showing Trump/Russky Collusion or Stolen Election
which was a dailywire story titled: There's Just One Problem With Those Russia Collusion Charges: No Evidence
(great article, you should read it) and in there was a line recapping the current narrative 'The Russians ("The Russians?") decided the entire election.'
and where it said "The Russians?" was a link to a clip from a movie: "Burn After Reading" and as a pretty big Coen Brothers fan i had to ask myself "how on earth did i miss this one???" just finished watching it and found it amazing 11/10.

David Hunt is a complete fraud.

That wasn't always the case.

Charles Nelson Reilly was on Match Game, and the old Hollywood Squares was a hoot with that cast of characters they had.

If obama had his FBI spy on Donald Trump, what do you expect the FBI director to say when asked about it?

Of course he's gonna deny it!
Even if Comey had nothing do with the spying, he can't admit he's incompetent and not in control of his bureau.

obama's FBI was up to ALL KINDS of illegal nefarious activity -- all of obama's federal departments were.

Comey is either a liar or a fool, but most likely a liar.

No. He used a poor source and got nailed for it. Righteously.

His ideals of a Representative Republic based upon Originalist ideals of the Constitution and Libertarian values were never "fake".

592 Mornin'

Covering an early shift this morning so I'm up and swillin' coffee.

One of my favorite childhood shows was SWAT. Cancelled after 1 1/2 seasons because the "violent" show had attracted a huge audience of pre-teen and young teen boys, like me and all my friends.

My parents had moved into a new subdivision, so there were always 4-5 houses under construction at any given point in my childhood. After the construction guys had left for the day, my friends and I would take over a site to play "SWAT Guys". Crashing through windows that had no glass in them yet to imitate "Deke" in the show's classic opening, crawling along beams, hang dropping from rafters... it was a blast.

But our toy guns weren't black SWAT rifles (with the thing that goes up.) We all had wild-west stuff, so we made for some odd 70s SWAT guys with our toy Colt pistols and Winchester rifles.

But we sure kept our quiet suburban 'hood safe from crazed 'nam vets, hippie drug cult leaders and international terrorists, I tell ya!

I have both DVD sets, for reliving my childhood.

596 WWW, that's a cool story about your loving SWAT. you reminded me how me and the kids in my little town would play Cat Ballou and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, especially, on this old railroad car forgotten on an unused siding. we'd climb up on top of it, and if our parents had known, we'd be in so much trouble.

But I guess they were busy living their lives. we were free.

so sleepy...good night all.

599 One reason our little subdivision was so safe:

The two largest houses on our street were directly across the street from each other. One belonged to the town judge. The other belonged to a well-known Mafia capo. (And two houses down from him lived a parole officer.)

Damn right our 'hood was safe.

Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at March 22, 2017 03:50 AM (ul9CR)

600 But real life LCN don't have their "associates"over to their houses all the time like on the Sopranos. They have safe houses for that. Around here they use houses way out in the country. The capo and his fam were just like any other family in the neighborhood. Never a hint of trouble out of that house.

My dad always warned me not to even think about dating his daughters though.

602 I didn't play cops and robbers as a kid. I played lots of cowboys and indians. I also loved the tv show Combat!. We would play 'kill the Krauts' with our toy WWII replica guns, with heavy wooden stock and metal barrel. Ah, the joys of being able to own such realistic toys when I was young. If I had that toy gun today, I could cause serious cases of 'getting the vapors' if I went anywhere with it and if one was butted with that rifle, like in the tv shows and movies, it really hurt. That thing weighed at least a couple of pounds. Didn't shoot any projectiles, but the bolt action worked and pulling the trigger made a distinctive metallic click. And no neighbor ever called the cops on us.

605 FYI Judy Collins, of Suite Judy Blue Eyes fame, has an amazing voice. Joni Mitchell is fantastic and her evolution to jazz is wonderful. She owns Both Sides Now where as before she merely sang it well. As for Supertramp, the logical song describes the warehousing of children that passes for education and predates Pink Floyd's anthem some years later. Breakfast in America remains a brilliant album.

Does this mean I have the last word?

God, family Sunday dinners, siblings who actually sort of get along, cops doing the right thing for the right reasons?

The most wonderful thing about it is how my 81 yo mother watches it, and the re-runs on cable, every time it's on. Ms. BC and I have now started having "family" dinners on Sunday for all the relatives. Not all show up (some are out of towners), but that series is amazing. No wonder the lefties HATE IT.
