de la Pole.jpg

Anne, Lady de la Pole
George Romney

Imagine how long it must take to paint the folds and imperfections and shimmers of that dress! My guess is that Romney had quite an attention span, and probably didn't even have his phone in the room when he was painting. No texting at work for him!

136 I wasn't familiar with Romney's paintings but this caught my attention. As CBD pointed out, The detail and sheen in the gown is wonderful. This is clearly a romanticized approach: flawless skin, edenic background, and classical Greek sculpture posture. His technique keeps the figure sharp and distinct from the less precise background and foreground, which focuses the viewers attention on the woman. I know certain paints were more expensive than others. I wonder if he saved those for the figures in the paintings, using cheaper paints for backgrounds, and passed the savings on to his patrons. :-)

Beyond that, there is a hint of sensuality in the pose. Her casual, comfortable stance, even the outline of one leg under the gown, invites the viewer's candid gaze. I find it subtle but effective.

Take a look at some of Romney's other paintings on his Wiki page. There is humor, deep emotion (The Magdalene), sometimes classical allusions in many of them. I especially enjoy the series he did with Lady Hamilton as Circe, Shakespeare's Titania, and as a bacchante. Somebody was having fun.

Thanks, CBD.

The foxglove on the lower right is nicely done, if vague.

war is inevitable, but bad.
I am of the opinion that the key to dealing with war is to make it so horrific and damaging to the people who lose it, that it makes the people propagating it think seven times before starting one again. So let's extend the analogy: dynasties are inevitable, but bad, so we should PUNISH the FUCKERS who try to start them with electoral FUCKING death, every fucking time.

Electing the right one is impossible, however the ones you listed, many are no longer involved much in politics. Elections are the corrective to any dynasty because the sins of the fathers tend to get visited on the children (and how!) and the necessary talent doesn't flow evenly from generation to generation.

Has there been a "right" dynasty in America?

The Adams were both terrible presidents (both great men, and Quincy was a great member of Congress).

The Harrisons are largely forgotten (the first having died after 30 days, of course). Was Benjamin a good forgotten president?

Probably the most "successful" dynasty is the Roosevelts, but I don't think we really like how that worked out.

The Kennedys went on forever (and still trying to go), and they were generally terrible.

The Bushs could have been a whole lot better, but they may be the most successful dynasty in American history, and that's kind of sad.

Electing the right one is impossible, however the ones you listed, many are no longer involved much in politics. Elections are the corrective to any dynasty because the sins of the fathers tend to get visited on the children (and how!) and the necessary talent doesn't flow evenly from generation to generation.
Posted by: *Mikey NTH - The Outrage Outlet Swears Never Gonna Give You Up, Never Gonna Let You Down at March 21, 2017 10:50 AM (hLRSq)

What Mikey said.

Dynasties stagnate because a comfortable upbringing is poisonous to competence. The Persians had a good riff by sending their princes out to be raised in the frontier, taught to ride, shoot the bow and always tell the truth. But even they tottered and fell.

Refreshing the pool of talent via elections is better than any aristocracy. And you need to keep refreshing that pool with outsiders, weirdos with orange hair, soldiers, tailors, tinkers....

I was driving the other day and listening to Brian Kilmeades show on Patriot. Tucker was on being interviewed by Kilmeade and was asked what interviewing Trump was like.

Tucker said he has interviewed Trump a couple of times and said Trump is his most difficult interview because Trump "gets the better of me every time". He said he has always been able to control the interviews(as is evidenced by how he destroys his daffy leftist guests) but he cannot control Trump. He said every time, Trump will nicely take control of the interview and totally disarm Tucker and move the interview in the direction he wants it to go in.

Tucker said he is so impressed with Trump's ability to do that and is somewhat distraught that he cannot stop it.

If they were a figure from the past, that might be excusable, but what is the moral ramification from conjuring up, say, Captain Janeway's image for a cruise through the wormhole?

Now on to serious matters:

The commenters who talked about federal term limits, I think, are on to something but I think it should be a limit on the cumulative term limits of all offices held and be 18 years. Something like the following would be good:

I. No person shall hold any federally elected office, or any combination of federally elected offices, for a cumulative period of more than 18 years.

II. In addition, no person shall be eligible to run for any federally elected office if the total term of that office shall cause the person so seeking that office to be in violation of section I of this Amendment.

This means three term as Senator is enough - and it would also stop someone from gaming the system if, say, they are appointed for two years at the end of one Senator's term, then get elected twice (so cumulative 14 years) then run for another term (so cumulative potential of 20 years) and resign at 18 years letting their party pick a successor to stretch it to 20.

The full quote.

"That is the entire purpose of costume, to accentuate breasts. Observe the first costumes of TNG, with their perfect conformity to every curve; Tasha Yar was in danger of poking eyes out. Counsillor Troi's regular cleavage shots, which would have worked too if she wasn't beaten with an ugly stick. Than there's Major Kira's "See this butt? Touch this butt." costume. And then, of course, Seven of Nine's "Who the fuck needs imagination?" threads, which proved that the nacelles weren't the only thing on the ship that lift and seperate. Yes, Star Trek is all about the female form, and we haven't even started on the old miniskirts...."
