2 Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, March 19, 2017. On this day in 1918 1918 Congress established time zones and approved daylight saving time as a cost savings measure in WWI. It saved nothing and still doesn't. This version was abandoned later because people hated it. Congress doesn't give a shit now.

27 "Just did 1.2 miles in eight minutes. I'mma go die now k?"

Bernard Montgomery took over a corps soon after Dunkirk. He was unhappy about the condition of some of the staff officers and decreed they all had to run or walk a 7 mile course once a week.

A fat old colonel came to Montgomery and said if he had to do the course he would die. Montgomery replied that if he was going to die it was better he die now when he was easy to replace instead of dying in battle, when things were chaotic. So the colonel could do the course and die. Apparently, he survived.

37 The federal budget slashing is awesome. Listened to a segment on NPR yesterday (it is really amusing if you put yourself in the right frame of mind). They were interviewing some "Economic Development" executive director that was running a $32M program in the Mississippi delta. His budget has been reduced to ZERO! They were spinning the whole thing to make it seem as if nothing could be done without the Feds bootstrapping various ecomomic development projects. I loved the line "$32M, that's as much as a mediocre shortstop makes in the majors". Like $32M is chump change.

The whining was epic!

40 Latest in the Fortress VIA rehab project.

Completely gutted the interior deck and subfloor area of the front bay window. Everything caulked weathertight, and the interior surfaces of the support structure lined with foam board, followed by re-insulating of the entire structure.with fiberglass. Deck subfloor of 1/2 inch plywood and the reclaimed 2-1/4 x 3/4 tongue and groove hardwood flooring is going in.

I hate doing molding and drywall, but it is beginning to come together nicely.

Of course, some of the lessons have been rather painful or time consuming. For example, the bay windows come together at a 30 degree angle to each other. Well my manual miter saw only cuts between 45-90 degrees.. So I spent over two hours trying to noodle out how to cut a 15 degree cut on a saw that only does 45-90. And then it dawned on me. There is a detent on the saw for 75 degrees. And if you subtract 15 from 90, you come up with 75. And after that, off to the races we went.

Yeh, when it comes to angles, I'm a Moron.

I'm slowly picking up some of the concepts, and am definitely improving at it.

And I have always liked to create things using my own hands.
But it's been a painful road, with seemly a lesson to be learned every step of the way.

Finally broke down and went to Harbor Freight (Yeh, I know. Cheap Chinese crap) and grabbed one of their pancake compressors with a coupon for $39.00, and a 34 degree, 15 gauge pneumatic nailer for about $60.00 with the 20% off coupon. Even if they both break down in 90 days, they will have paid for themselves in the elimination of having to swing a manual hammer driving fasteners into 70 year old plaster-board walls, with the subsequent damage from grant hammer strikes, and other problems cause by beating on walls with hammers.

If I recall correctly, the lead is even in the pipes that go to each house. What is the plan, to replace a bunch of old pipes? What a nightmare that's gonna be. I've been to Flint and the houses are old and not worth that much. We'd be way ahead to put them back on Detroit Water or even to abandon all those houses and move all those people.

I want to know the plan, and see if Democrats will still be in charge of the remediation. Their Congressman, Dan Kildee is a real POS.

Trim work in a perfect world should be easy. Square corners, constant angles, and such. As you and I both know - the real world ain't so easy.

Make you a deal - you take care of the trim and drywall, and I'll frame and paint.

Pretty accurate assessment.

But, there are some items which are worth the price.

A few years back I went to bed early because I felt like crap. Everything hurt, my hair hurt ,my teeth. I took some medicine, don't remember what I took, went to bed and got under the blankets. The weight of the blankets hurt.

77 10 While Shit-for-brains was President we had 30 countries who refused to take back their illegals who were criminals so Choom released them to the streets. And did nothing. I do hope Trump changes this.
____________________________

SCOTUS says you have to release or deport them once they've served their prison sentence.

Problem is, since their countries won't take them back, Obama just shrugged and said "okay, whatever." There was never any pressure applied to the countries who refused to repatriate their illegal alien criminals. The U.S. could refuse to issue new visas to them (which Obama declined to do), we could deny them aid, we could apply lots of types of pressure, but Obama wouldn't.

First thing Trump needs to do is let these a-hole countries (China, Cuba, etc.) know that if they continue refusing to take back their own criminals, no more visas will be issued to their students, wannabe tourists, etc., until they change their tune on the criminals.

A lot of these countries (especially China) depend on U.S. universities to educate their best students, so they won't like that. We have plenty of leverage, it's time to use it. The U.S. shouldn't be a dumping ground for other countries' criminals. It's long past time we put an end to this shit.

1 - FULL REPEAL of all 2,000+ pages but. . .
2 - Sunset coverage of all insured for 12-18 months
3 - At minimum, reinstate the status quo as of March 2010 but ideally allow insurance companies and other financial institutions to draft new policies based on market dynamics
4 - Allow freedom to sell to anyone any policy in any state. No more forced monopolies
5 - TORT REFORM, Malpractice abuse drives costs up.
6 - Monitoring (reform?) of Medicare/Medicaid fraud waste and abuse.

119 Portland Oregon is trying a pilot program to address its homeless problem: they are placing tiny modular homes in the backyards of willing residents, and allowing the homeless to live there.

Portland has bought four of the modular homes for the project (you must look at the photo of these shacks). The city paid a reported $365k in tax money, plus a charitable donation ($ amount undisclosed) for just 4 of these things (which seems like a huge waste of taxpayer money, since the things look like do-it-yourself garden sheds that somebody could build for less than $1k. Bet the manufacturer is a relative/big donor of one of the Dim city council members).

The homeowners signing up to have these things set up in their backyards are certain that it will be a great solution to Portland's homeless problem -- because the homeless people will appreciate the tiny homes! Bwahahaha.

The homeless are supposed to pay 30% of the rent for the tiny homes, with the government picking up the rest. After 5 years, the ownership of the shack transfers to the homeowner (the person in whose yard it is placed), and the HO can then rent it out to any tenants s/he pleases.

Can't wait to see how this works out.

There is a concept in Catholicism called "sedevacantism" (the seat is vacant), that when a Pope becomes heretical, there really is no pope heading the RCC (similar to the time in between when a Pope dies or resigns and a new Pope is selected).

Portland homeowner, proud of his tolerant, inclusive, "free to be you and me" moral superiority, gets his morning cup of coffee and walks out onto his backyard deck to gaze upon the sunrise and the modular home in which his new, formerly-homeless tenants live.

As he steps outside, he feels a sharp prick and looks down to see a bloody syringe under his bare foot. His looks around and sees that his deck is littered with empty bottles of booze and other garbage, and stained with various substances. He slinks back into his house, bolts the back door, and tells himself that if he just doesn't think about it, it will all go away . . . .

180 Saw "Passengers" last night.

Basically, a girly desert island romance set in space.

Mrs naturalfake enjoyed it. for what it was, I thought it was okay.

And man, did they spend big dollars on it. Everything looks great. Well acted.

Being a Hollywood romance, there aren't a lot of surprises. But, I think that's just part of the charm for the ladies- sort of like sitting down to a nice cup of hot chocolate.

SJW types got their panties in a wad over the plot mechanisms that led to the desert island situation. And that led to a lot of online screaming apparently.

It does ask some moral questions, but hey, Hollywood romance!!! And the SJWs must not have actually watched the movie because choices are given in the end.

Anyway, one for the ladies. Not horrible for the guys.

We rarely drink coffee at home so we love our Keurig. It does a find job for us the 3-4 times a week we use it.

There's a part of me that would love to get into the various ways of making fine coffee, but we drink coffee so rarely and my experience in expensive restaurants serving exquisite coffees is that the difference between wonderful coffee and tolerable coffee is not worth the difference in price and time.

Everyone else's mileage will likely vary. I can tell the difference between bad coffee and good coffee but if there's a gene for appreciating great coffee, I apparently lack it.

I envy those of you who are able to experience great coffee.

219 My boss buys store-brand ground coffee and makes it in an electric drip maker. I drink it at work and it's fine.

At home, I use a french press and buy whole bean.

But my taste buds are not all that great, and I honestly can't tell much difference. But it's fun to make it my way, and since I only drink a cup or two per day at home, it's not that much extra expense.

221 I've been a carpenter / contractor / cabinetmaker for almost forty years, and can promise you that, with few exceptions, you get what you pay for when buying tools. Bosch hand-held jigsaws are the gold standard; I paid $140 in 1984 dollars for my first one, and used it hard and often until it died in 2006. Paid $140 in '06 dollars for the one I'm using now. It runs like a sewing machine and with the right blades can cut almost as fast as a circular saw. You'll never regret buying the best first. I can also recommend, without reservation, the Bosch 10" sliding compound miter saw. Ditto the Metabo 6" angle grinder; there's a reason angle grinders are generically referred to as a "Metabo", like bandaids, tampax, and windex. However, I did buy a HF 4-1/2" angle grinder for $15 (about 1/10 the cost of the Metabo), and it's much lighter and easier to use. For light-duty, imprecise work, the HF tool is a great deal, and cheap enough to buy two (thin cutoff blade in one, flap disc in the other).

A lot of the power tools I use are old-school but I saw no reason to replace them for the latest laser-guided plastic crap from China, to wit: Rockwell all-metal 315 circular saw (also have several plastic-and-metal Porter-Cable 315-2 saws), Rockwell 127 Door plane (which no one has ever improved upon), various Rockwell/PC routers (also have a Milwaukee which is a great tool, esp the one-hand grip), a souped-up Rockwell 10" contractor's table saw which is now halfway to a Unisaw (paid $600 in 1982 money, but it's been a workhorse), and a bunch of others. I'm in love-love-love with my Dewalt 12v Li-Ion 3/8" drill and 1/4" impact driver; if you don't own an impact driver and spend any time with tools in-hand, get one.

My hand tools (planes, chisels, squares, etc.) are mostly garage sale finds, but topline stuff; Starrett and old Lufkin squares, e.g. Handplanes are all Stanley ('sweetheart" logo) from the 1920s or older (Stanley Rule and Level), from #3 to #8, plus some block and low-angle block planes. Paid $30 for the #3, lots less for the rest. Chisels, etc., are old Buck Bros, Stanley, TH Witherby, Butcher's, and others, bought for a quarter here, a buck there. Look for plane irons and chisels that rust to a black, not red; this is indicative of the
hardwood charcoal used in the steel production of the New England toolmakers. I buy paint-covered putty knives for a quarter, and often find great steel and Brazilian rosewood handles under the schmutz.

OK, I'll stop now.
