Secretary of State Tillerson: Our Policy of "Strategic Patience" on North Korea Has Officially Ended

Red lines?

"Efforts toward North Korea to achieve peaceful stability over the last two decades have failed to make us safer," Tillerson said. He added, "Let me be very clear, the policy of strategic patience has ended. We're exploring a new range of diplomatic, security and economic measures. All options are on the table."

Read Sexton's post. North Korea is again demanding the world pay attention to it by threatening its southern neighbor, and even the South Koreans -- usually very reluctant to antagonize their insane psychotic little brother because he'll destroy Seoul if he spazzes out enough -- are talking about escalation being inevitable.

8 Note, the NORKs would go with unlimited warfare, and use thousands of Artillery pieces to fire on Civilians...

They would then get their ass kicked by the South Korean Army...

What we, and the South need to do is make SURE that everyone in North Korea knows that shelling civilians IS a War Crime... and they will be held accountable personally if they do so.

11 Serious Moron Question here.

the Nork's population eats sawdust for sustenance..

How much of a force would it take to roll right through that country and take him out?

Obviously any Allied build up of forces would need to happen under the cover of darkness and surprise the NORKs that way.

42 If we wait much longer to resolve this, a war with North Korea will mean trading the destruction of cities in the USA for the destruction of the North Korean regime.

The idea that China would step in and take out the North Korean regime and install something more stable because of the concern of refugees crossing the border is nonsense. China would just mow the refugees down if necessary. Remember Tiananmen Square?

North Korea was enabled for years, especially by Bill Clinton in order to kick the can down the road and off of his watch.

It's unbelievable the amount of shit that has been dumped on the Trump administration to clean up by Obama and previous administrations going back to Bush I.

45 We just put a missile defense system in. I assume it'll work.

So here's a scenario. NORKs launch another missile. Do we shoot it down? What if it's aimed toward Japan, or crosses over South Korea?

If shot down, Un is humiliated, no? What does he do?

Do we have an Ohio Class parked offshore? We don't want to go nuclear as a last resort, but we can let Un (and China) know that if provoked enough we'll use cruise missiles at select targets in the North. Un's favorite things. Even known places where Un is known to hang out.

75 It would be great if Trump and Tillerson would forcefully make the following points to the public:

(a) Bill Clinton signed a deal with the Norks which Clinton said would eliminate any chance of Pyongyang getting nuclear weapons. The Norks ended up with nukes anyway. Because the deal was absurdly weak and unrealistic, and allowed them to easily cheat.

(b) The deal with Tehran cut by Obama and Kerry, which again was billed as one which would eliminate any chance of the counterparty getting nuclear weapons, is BASICALLY THE SAME DAMN SETUP as had previously failed in the case of North Korea. The Iranian antinuclear deal was in fact negotiated by the VERY SAME INDIVIDUAL, highly trained social worker and Democrat apparatchik Wendy Sherman.

(c) Given the plain proofs that deal (a) was a raw deal from the start, and hasn't worked at all, what rationale is there for continuing to pretend that deal (b) is still viable and worth honoring? Make the case to the public. Lay out the hard facts.

In someways North Korea is useful, because most people rightfully see
this as China's child. This will be a good excuse for Trump to nail
China with tariffs if they don't do something about their little

.China owns this entire mess as there would not be a North Korea if they had stayed out of the conflict in 1951. MacArthur had the war won until China got all nervous about having a US Ally on their border and sent in over 1,000,000 soldiers to stop that from happening.

So whatever occurs, China is directly responsible.

"Certainly there are some people in the Democratic Party who want to maintain the status quo," Sanders told the New York Times Magazine when asked "if he thought the Democratic Party knew what it stood for."

127 "We just put a missile defense system in. I assume it'll work."

Chancy assumption. Very chancy.

The last President to regard ballistic missile defense with any degree of seriousness was Ronald Reagan.

When the country-club Eastern-establishment Poppy Bush arrived, he almost immediately began slashing away at the Reagan defense buildup he had inherited, including BMD. Poppy's successor Billy Jeff of course was quite happy to not renew those contracts and programs.

Dubya Bush then panicked after 9/11 upon being told by the Pentagon that, well, no, sir, there really isn't a BMD capability to speak of. What we've got is an underfunded, undertested research program with only a few vehicles.

Dubya immediately ordered that this scanty number of interceptors be officially decreed operational, despite their poor reliability and lousy performance in testing. He wanted also to have the Navy Aegis system declared fully mission ready for BMD intercept, which was again a serious stretch from technical reality.

Obama was utterly disinterested in the entire subject.

So here we are in 2017. Where ballistic missiles and nukes to go on top of those missiles are proliferating madly. Including into the hands of literal madmen. And the ability of the USA to shoot them down is still highly questionable.

The last I saw, and who knows if it's true or just propaganda games, a guy high enough to know about this stuff defected and said that Il is rushing ahead with a nuclear test and that the Norks do not know what they are doing and there is a strong chance that the test will fail as in blow themselves up and then all hell will break loose as the survivors flee pell mell to get away. Running the risk of getting shot by China is nothing compared to being irradiated.

Again, who knows if that's true but North Korea setting of an accidental nuclear detonation up by the Chinese border is all kinds of bad bad bad.

Meh. In the 1980s there was a wave of leftist dupe "Students" who supposedly hated the USA too.

But the vast silent majority of South Koreans? Grateful we are there.

There were and still are frictions about the soldiers and the bar girls, but frankly, any place you have soldiers, sailors or airmen, you will have "camp followers" nearby. That goes stateside and in Europe as much as it does in Korea.

250 The NORKS don't need to have developed nuclear capabilities. They can be used as a proxy for EMPs. It will take years, if ever, to find out who gave them the materials and who used them as proxies. Our subs across the globe would have to launch a strike against many countries after an attack. The loss of life in this country after a year would be 300 million and the world would be several billion.

This is not good for the world. This is why the NORKS must be dealt with.

The Chi-Coms, though vast in number, had no nukes and no strategic bombers or ICBMs (although we only had the B-29 at that time and the BUFF was only just approved for production in '52). And the Russkies only just exploded a Rosenberg-stolen nuke.

We had them both by the short hairs and Truman wimped out. Then again, it might have given the green light for the Russkies to nuke Europe and roll in. And the Islamo-Nazis were still on the horizon.

I don't see the Rooskies or the Chinese using an EMP. They want the natural resources and destroying our grid makes their actually getting those resources a PITA. Much easier to disable the grid via cyber in a manner that it could be much more easily resurrected after conquest.

The Norks and Iranians OTOH, aren't thinking any further than Death to the Great Satan.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) implied in a recent interview that the Democratic Party is like the ill-fated Titanic, adding that some Democrats want to go along with the "status quo" and sink with the ship.

"Certainly there are some people in the Democratic Party who want to maintain the status quo," Sanders told the New York Times Magazine when asked "if he thought the Democratic Party knew what it stood for."

"They would rather go down with the Titanic so long as they have first-class seats," Sanders continued.

The dirty little secret... the core of the Iranian development / research program is in Nork-land, and safely beyond the reach of the Mossad & the IDF.

The only thing happening in Iran is the processing of the needed materials, and they had 8+ years to harden the infrastructure.

The stakes are far, far higher than you realize... if you think a chubby psycho waving nukes is scary, wait until you have to face the Twelvers in Iran with nukes, and EMP devices.
