NBC News Pissed at MSNBC For Keeping Tax "Scoop" Secret from Parent Network, and Then Totally Clownf***ing Themselves on Live TV

It's embarrassing to them. Rachel Maddow held up a mirror to the media, and they didn't like what they saw. Because it wasn't a mirror, it was just a mirror's frame with the mirror removed, so they were looking at Rachel Maddow's cashew head rictus.

"[MSNBC president] Phil Griffin was trying to undermine [NBC News president] Noah Oppenheim. There was never a conversation. They overplayed their hand in a huge way."

Host Rachel Maddow teased the story on Twitter, then withheld the story till later in her program, revealing in a big anticlimax that Trump paid $38 million in taxes in 2005. "It's their cable network, but it's still NBC News. [NBC] did not appreciate being kept in the dark... To hype such a big story and not really deliver is a bit embarrassing. Airing a story you’ve hyped 20 minutes into your broadcast makes it a lot less of a 'breaking news' story."

These people have very distorted conceptions of themselves as "reality based" and seeking only "empirical truth" and not "alternate facts." They like pretending themselves to be this way even as they eagerly speculate about this conspiracy theory or that hypothetical scandal.

But when one them goes to far and reveals them for what they are, they feel a collective prick of their inflated egos, and have to distance themselves from that person, to maintain the fiction that they're different than that.

They're not different than that, of course. Check out Andrew Klavan noting how the rest of the left-wing media is eager to relay the same sort of silly fictions as Maddow.

But they do like preening.

Let's say a media company had gotten copies of someone's returns for verification of tax compliance as part of a contract negotiation, and then 12 years later released them without permission from the tax payer.

This is not a violation of federal statute, but in civil court, what sort of penalty would this lay the media company open to? Is it merely based on the contract as to the confidentiality of this information, or is there an implicit expectation of confidentiality of this information?

114 "The only real "news" in the whole thing was that someone had illegally leaked Trump's 2005 tax return."

Rachel pushed the story that the 2005 1040 pages showed a Russian connection because Trump had made something like a $50 million profit selling a house to a Russian oligarch. (Apparently that sale was actually in 200.

She also showed a 2016 picture of the oligarch's plane on the same tarmac as Trump's (who was 60 miles away). She even used the word "tarmac" with no sense of irony.

So, you see, we need all of Trump's tax returns to get to the bottom of this. "National security is at stake!" because Trump may be a puppet.

She was deranged. I think she actually believes this.

"It shall be unlawful for any person to whom any return or return information ... is disclosed in a manner unauthorized by this title thereafter willfully to print or publish in any manner not provided by law any such return or return information."

Brian Williams (and others) said that the press can legally publish but that's totally wrong. SCOTUS Pentagon Papers case was about government stopping the presses, not liability afterwards for running the presses.

Trump can authorize disclosure, which is why Rachel led with "maybe this came from Trump himself" to create wiggle room, but she could be indicted and convicted.

190 Ignoramus, my understanding is that this is only for information held by the IRS and to agencies that share information with IRS. The IRS requires this condition on sharing tax information. This can include state tax agencies and law enforcement at times. Information disseminated by the IRS is protected as Federal Tax Information.

This is specifically due to the obligations on the IRS to keep this information confidential, so they have penalties and jail time and cost of prosecution.

Should the information be disseminated by the tax payer, that is different and may be handled by statute, but probably is dealt with under civil rules.
There may be rules for tax preparers and banking institutions by the way but I don't know.

Anybody that remembers how is dead or long retired. Today's news outlets including Fox is info-tainment at its to best propaganda smearing at its worst. Folks like to blame Ted Turner for this when he introduced the 24 hour news cycle, but, the truth is that it was long gone before that.

Anybody can point to the fact that Rush Limbaugh became very rich just by telling the truth and immediately doing a correction and an apology when he got it wrong. All everybody wants is the truth, so even people who hated Conservatism found themselves listening to Rush because it was so refreshing to hear it.

289 "any person to whom any return or return information .. . is disclosed in a manner unauthorized by this title"
Posted by: Ignoramus at March 16, 2017 07:49 PM (SIY7D)

the IRS trainings themselves state this is for information sourced from the IRS, and the IRS only releases this information subject to memorandums of understandings and the requirement of specific security requirements - and trainings.
The recipients of this information are prohibited from disclosing this information to third parties, and must safeguard it in specific ways.

A taxpayer can disclose tax information to a third party directly; that doesn't come under these IRS regs or US code. However, if the third party discloses that information without consent it may come under civil statutes.

290 "the IRS trainings themselves state this is for information sourced from the IRS, "

Wouldn't the statute read "in a manner authorized by this title thereafter willfully to print or publish in any manner not provided by law" for this to be true

instead of

"in a manner unauthorized by this title thereafter willfully to print or publish in any manner not provided by law"

i.e. you got it "unauthorized" and then published

Before it's all said and done, Barry and George Clooney will have a go on the Riviera. Mark your calendars.

294 Didja see this? After Amy Schumer's craptastic comedy spectacular, Netflix abandons five-star rating system in favor of thumb up or thumbs down. They use a modified Madcow defense, our viewers are too damn stupid and lazy to use the five-star system, but, as they say, I question the timing.

295 My heart bleeds for these jerkoffs. I can hardly figure out who I dislike more between MSNBC, NBC, and Rachel Madcow. Some decisions are just too hard to make. Guess I'll pass it on to the Great Buffalo--or maybe Fauxcahontas. One of them can decide who's the biggest jerkmeat of the three.

People think it would be fun to be a bird because you could fly. But they forget the negative side, which is the preening.

Supported by stats and facts, Silver explained how associating only with people like yourself leads to GroupThink and confirmation bias. My reaction: No, duh. But, to me, the most interesting line in the article was this: "The best hope for a short-term fix might come from an attitudinal adjustment: Journalists should recalibrate themselves to be more skeptical of the consensus of their peers."

The attitudinal adjustment that would do one of these "journalists" the most good would be to regard his or her peers as blithering idiots and then resolve to improve ones game so as not to be likewise.

Why did none of you tell me this?

yeah, it was an uncredited cameo as The Force, Brian Dennehy lost the coin toss and had to play the Death Star.
