Snowflakes Melting: Huge Rise in Personality Disorders Among Millennials

Psychologists are especially worried about a huge increase in I Just Can't Even Syndrome.

Look, I don't want to make fun of people suffering serious mental disorders, but it is kind of my job, so....

If you were to come across someone who cried in the streets, who saw the world in terms of black and white and made death threats against strangers, who cowered in a special room and made public displays of naked self-harm and blood letting, you might conclude that they were suffering from a personality disorder.

All these symptoms can be found in the High Conflict Personality Disorder category known as Axis II in DSMV, including Anti-Social PD, Histrionic PD, Paranoid PD, Narcissistic PD, and Borderline PD.

Alternatively, you might reason that these are the everyday behaviors of the modern Social Justice Warrior (SJW).

Of course, not every SJW has a personality condition, but sufferers from High Conflict disorders are often drawn to extreme beliefs and behaviors under the illusion that they are acting politically.

How many times have I said this is not a politics, but a pathology masquerading as politics to reassure itself?

And how many times have I told you to click on my obvious rickrolls so I can have some enjoyment in my workday?

NOT ENOUGH TIMES, I guess.

A 2016 UK survey found that, since 1990, rates of depression and anxiety among the young have increased by 70%, while the American Counseling Association has reported a “rising tide of personality disorders among millennials.”

That such disorders appear to be an acute problem with this generation may be an unintended outcome of the unprecedented experiment conducted in the 1990s and 2000s by progressive parents.

In 2014, a survey of 100,000 college students at 53 U.S. campuses by the American College Health Association found that 84% of U.S. students feel unable to cope, while more than half experience overwhelming anxiety.

I can only recommend reading the Lukianoff/Haidt article on perverse behavioral conditioning.

Therapeutic behavioral conditioning trains people how to de-trigger themselves from triggers that cause panic, anxiety, depression, or bad behavior (drinking, etc.) That sort of behavioral conditioning teaches people to be mindful of their triggers, to understand that the trigger is just a tic with no real world purpose, and to train themselves to associate the trigger not with an adverse behavioral pattern (being in crowd triggers claustrophobia-like panic) but to train the trigger to lead to some other more benign consequence (being in crowd triggers recitation of the Ode to Joy).

The idea is that your brain has miswired itself to connect an input (too many people close to me) to an undesirable psycho-somatic reaction (heart racing, extreme anxiety), and that it takes a determined attempt to reprogram the brain and untangle those wires so that the triggering input leads first to a benign output and, ultimately, no particular output at all.

This works. Allen Carr's How to Quit Smoking the Easy Way taught me how to re-wire the trigger (the anxiety/stress one feels when one's 45 minute nicotine clock runs down to 0) into a different behavioral pattern (go outside, gulp in some fresh air, pace around a little bit like I used to do when smoking). It also taught me that the stress of not smoking was irrational, and that it would be helpful to view the addiction as a malignant parasite inside of me trying to manipulate my brain into keeping it fed while it ruined my body.

Works.

Anyway, Lukianoff suffered from some kind of triggered anxiety (I forget which), and underwent cognitive behavioral therapy, and cured himself of it

He realized that the process could be reversed. As brains with bad triggers could be un-triggered to be healthy, so too could completely healthy brains be deliberately taught to be triggered by harmless things and bring about various mental ailments, panic, anxiety, irrational emotional outbursts, a compulsion to violence, tantrums, etc.

And he brought this theory to a social psychologist named Haidt and asked him "Is this possible?" And Haidt said, "Damn it, not only is that possible, I think you've hit upon a very real malapplication of psychological techniques -- we're psychologically training an entire swath of the population to be crazy."

Okay, he didn't really say that. But that's kind of the gist.

Definitely read it.

There's no great mystery to what's going on. People who train themselves to be cool and clear of mind will find themselves becoming more cool and clear of mind.

People who train themselves to go to pieces over every damn thing will find themselves getting better and better at going to pieces over every damn thing.

When you valorize a mental disorder and turn it into a virtue to be cultivated, guess what you're gonna get? More mental disorders.

I don't want anybody to try to prove it, but if you're insane enough to try to prove it, pick a common trigger, like driving over a bridge. Every time you drive over the bridge, make yourself hyperventilate and imagine a terrible car crash. Also focus on all the things currently causing you genuine anxiety so that you will associate the bridge with your actual anxiety reactions.

Attempt to instill in yourself a sense of fear (you can actually do this -- you know what fear feels like in your body and brain, you just need to simulate it a bit). You can raise your pulse and blood pressure by hyperventilating and tensing up.

Do this 40 or 50 times and you won't have to pretend to have a phobia about driving over bridges anymore. You'll have actually created in your brain a direct trigger from the stimulus (the bridge) to the reaction (hyperventilating, anxiety, panic), and none of that will be a simulation any longer. It will now be real, and you now you will have to spend six months or a year (or more) trying to cure yourself of it.

I urge you to not actually attempt that experiment on yourself and just accept that this is how most anxieties get made. This video explains the basics: your brain is smart, just as smart as you are, and it's also lazy. Kind of like you are. It wants to use the least higher cognitive ability possible for any kind of task, because cognition bandwidth is premium bandwidth and it wants to keep that clear for important stuff. (And because it's lazy -- it doesn't want to burn energy unnecessarily.) So anytime it spots actions that are usually taken together, like putting one foot in front of the other, shifting the wait forward, then putting the other foot forward -- you know, walking -- it automates that process so that the higher cognition parts of the brain don't have to tediously go through each step with direct conscious control.

So if your brain keeps noticing that every time you drive over a bridge you start (deliberately) hyperventilating and tensing and thinking about horrible car accidents, it's going to say "Hey, I can save a bunch of processor power here if I just make an automatic neural linkage between input 'bridge' and output 'irrational panic attack.' If I make it all unconscious and completely automated, that frees me up for important things, like daydreaming about Kate Upton's magnificent rack."

And it thinks it's going to be doing you a favor with that, and often automation of basic routines is a huge favor (no one really wants to think about each step while walking), but when it does it with a bad habit or a hysterical reaction, it's deploying a useful process towards a counter-productive end.

Social Justice Warriors begin by feigning outrage and emotional upset because they've been instructed that this makes them "educated" and "enlightened" (and it's easier to cry like a baby than, say, cultivate a basic understanding of a subject or an appreciation of an art).

But at some point, this stops being feigned. They've now taught themselves to take the input "something about Trump" and produce the output "hysterical crying fit and panic attack" for real.

And you could even de-program of this over six months or a year of effort... but doing that would require effort, which they've been taught doesn't make you a good person and probably just shows your #Privilege, and doing that would require they actually want to quit the bad behavior -- which, of course, they don't.

And there's really no way around the fact that you have to want to quit an unhealthy behavior to actually quit it. You gotta admit you have a problem before you can fix it, and, as I'm sure they'll be the first to tell you, they're already perfect in every conceivable way.

And Here You Go: A gym has banned mainstream media news from playing on any of its tvs due to fears about the emotional safety of its members.

A YMCA in Scranton, Pa. has banned mainstream media television channels from playing in the facility due to concern for the physical and emotional safety of its members.

The Greater Scranton YMCA's board of directors sent a letter to its members regarding the facility's new politics-free zone policy.

Mainstream media channels such as CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News are now banned from the facility due to "raised concerns about the safety, both physically and emotionally" of the members.

"Members said the ban came after some political discussions in the locker room turned contentious," the New York Post reported on Monday.

To be honest, I don't think I want to see news when I'm out in public myself. The country is too divided. I don't want to see MSNBC, and I trust the snowflakes don't want a full face of Tucker Carlson either.

But still, I gotta think the people having problems here are the people who have been told by their Media and Academic Mind-Lords that freaking out over trivial things makes you a smart person who may one day join the Media and Academic Mind-Lord class.

Nightmares, panic episodes ... the whole range of disorders. I think the UK establishment was proud that their propaganda was having an effect.

35 O/T

Middle America is going to die with the Yellen rate hike next week. The rate hike is purely anti-Trump, nothing more.

I just surveyed a healthy portion of it.

Oil prices are cratering--the rate hike is going to create a stronger dollar, which is going to drive oil even further down.

The strong dollar is going to drive US agricultural exports down. We're already seeing drought and a migration away from grain consumption. This is going to accelerate to collapse.

Housing is going to be nudged to make the cost of borrowing more expensive.

There is very little real inflation and tepid growth. This is the tipping point...we're starting to see abandoned homes in the nicer neighborhoods.

Because so much of our experience and mechanical thinking relies on neural pathways, which are formed to build relationships to experiences and reactions, these pathways also can serve to railroad us into unwanted mental and physical responses.

Learning to disassociate anxiety or depression from their neural relationships (which is really the de-triggering you mentioned) works exceptionally well.

Attempt to instill in yourself a sense of fear (you can actually do this -- you know what fear feels like in your body and brain, you just need to simulate it a bit). You can raise your pulse and blood pressure by hyperventilating and tensing up.

Or just an example from an important person in your life can get you this reaction. My Mom hate hate hated to drive and communicated that hatred to me, making me an anxious driver. I've had to put a lot of effort into deprogramming myself and I'm still kind of tense about it. It's about, "I am abnormal, inferior, and my only unique quality is my total inability to function in society and predilection to let my freak flag fly. So, everyone else must accept that they are fucked up and I am the only normal person."

No one can ever explain to me why millions of people need to alter every aspect of their existence to better accommodate 1 person who refuses to make any effort whatsoever to function effectively in society.

I don't care what you do, who you really are, etc. I don't have any opinion on you whatsoever. That goes for everyone. You have a simple choice: we can make our best effort to function together by standards that apply universally and have existed as long as humans have attempted to function as a society, or you can run off on your own and do your own thing. Your choice does not matter to me at all. The only thing that matters less to me is your self serving demands on me.

131 I have induced OCD about brushing my teeth that's taken many parts of my 29 years to attempt to break.

Why do I say induced? Because I went through about five years of extensive dental work that required that I brush my teeth immediately after consuming anything but water. This is an actual physical need to prevent infection.

You know what my brain did? Eating = brushing teeth. It got to the point that I was brushing so frequently and so vigorously that I was wearing down the enamel.

It took (and still takes) an act of will to put down the toothbrush and look up into the mirror and say, yes, many times out loud "It's okay not to brush my teeth just because I ate some pretzels. I can wait until before I go to sleep." It's training, pure and simple.

I dislike medicalizing the other side because I don't like it when it's done to me but there are absolutely people who think they are passionate about politics when what they are is crazy and politics is their polite way to express it.

Posted by: baldilocks at March 08, 2017 01:25 PM (VlyWV)

That's certainly a big part of the issue. That and a severe lack of perspective. The life of a modern child is so hemmed in "for their safety" that they don't know how fortunate they are because they don't know that anything beyond their experience is not just possible but the norm for the rest of the world.

Add the constant drumbeat that life is unfair because it is imperfect and you're a long way to creating a person completely unable to cope with even the most minor setback.

222 118 I hate when the news is on, anywhere, in public. One time I was in a McDonalds that had CNN blaring at high volume, so I took my food into a section they had roped off as "Closed". The manager came over and told me I couldn't sit there. I told him I wasn't going to sit where I had to have my meal disturbed by the TV. We argued a bit, so I picked up my tray, walked over to the TV, turned it off, and sat down next to it. He was fuming, but finally compromised by turning it on, but muting the volume.

I admit I should have just kept that thought to myself but some anti Israel , middle eastern descent guy over heard me and started to run his mouth. Posted by: Furious George at March 08, 2017 01:18 PM (j+dfT)

I've got no issues with self esteem, per say. In a more rational age, self esteem was rooted in honesty and personal responsibility.

Where it went off the rails, IMO, was grading on curves, etc. and the entire idea of "fairness". It's been a death spiral from there on.

I cannot, for the life of me, comprehend the confusion. Life isn't fair. Period. No exceptions. There are two, very simple choices:

A) Freedom. The upside of freedom is potential limited only by your abilities. The downside is you are equally free (and more likely) to fail. Failure is not a bad thing. Ask Thomas Edison about inventing the light bulb.

B) Socialism/ Communism. The upside is everything is "fair" and "equal" (excepting your rulers, because some people are more equal than others). The downside is everything devolves to the lowest common denominator and everyone gets an equal share of scarcity.

There is no middle ground and, no matter which system you choose, you will always have want, need, disease, and terrible things that happen. Only one of these choices has ever resulted in a reduction of the negative aspects of life for anyone at at (and, usually, a large majority along with the "rising tide raises all ships" principle)... and it isn't choice B.

326 Reconditioning the fear response:
I cured myself of the fear of snakes this way, when I was a child. Whenever I came across a garter snake, I forced myself to handle it, knowing that it was harmless and therefore fear of it was irrational.

Flash forward 30 years: I'm the person the neighbors come to when they need a snake removed from their property. The 4 ft black snake in the neighbor's woodworking shed was a blast. It tried to escape behind a corner cabinet and I had to grab it by the tail and whip it back out like a...whip. My husband and the neighbor retreated so precipitously before the shocked and wildly lashing snake that if there hadn't been a doorway right behind them, they'd have made one.

I carried it around the corner and let it loose in the back 250: it never came back to that workshed.

(Disclaimer: I only use my powers to safely remove harmless snakes from proximity to frightened humans who would otherwise try to kill them.)

328 Wish I had time to read the piece here, Ace.

Personality disorders are kinda my thang.

One thing I like to point out: Pee-sigh-chiatrists have a real hard time with personality disorders, precisely because they don't really have a drug for it. They can't prescribe something to get rid of your symptoms, so often they act like the disorders don't exist.

Or they only apply them to clients who are "non-compliant" with treatment.

And yes, they are very much on the rise, and with all the pressure we have culturally to accommodate the snowflake population, watch this to become much much much more pressure applied to mental health providers to disregard personality disorders. To essentially pretend they don't exist, because it takes courage in some mental health systems to even point out that people have them, and it's not that they're depressed or have experienced trauma (EVERYBODY EXPERIENCES TRAUMA!!!), or otherwise deal with anxiety or substance use problems, etc.

No, your client is borderline, or histrionic or narcissistic or some combination thereof. And any explanation otherwise is bound to fail, as a treatment option. But you'll keep trying. Oh yes you will.

Personality disorders are one of my interests as well.

The books I've read admit that they cannot be cured; the only real success is to have the healthy people navigate around their issues. Which works just fine for those who have the disorders, but not those around them. In the past year and a half, I've had to deal with a diagnosed Narcissist, Histronic and someone with huge passive aggressive issues. All three were nightmares.

I've found the best remedy for those individuals is to get them out of your life completely and have no contact. It's harsh and obviously not applicable to everyone , but it works.

As for the psychiatrists, why would they ever admit something incurable? They need to keep up the payments on their Swiss chalets.

374 >>> "In 2014, a survey of 100,000 college students at 53 U.S. campuses by the American College Health Association found that 84% of U.S. students feel unable to cope, while more than half experience overwhelming anxiety."
.....

Just for fun, let's take this at face value.

2 Questions: What is the cause? What is the solution?

My opinion: Cause: 84% of U.S. students have absolutely no business being in college. I agree. They can't handle it. They are not suited to it. No amount of federally guaranteed debt that will never be repaid will change that because everyone has different talents and abilities. Very few have talents and abilities that will benefit from and be enhanced by higher education of any kind. There is no mystery to this, since likely 100% of that 84% had poor grades from K- 12 and have never demonstrated any ability beyond average, at best.

Solution: Immediately terminate every college recruiter, advisor, and shutter every government education agency. Tear down every poster and ridicule anyone who blathers anything resembling "People will college degrees earn X time more than...". Shoot anyone and everyone who works in HR and eliminate ever last certification and set of initials that people tack on after their last name, with the exception of MD. It's all a bunch of bullshit.

Want evidence? Remember all the Robber Barons who created business that raised the wealth and well being of the world more in 20 years or so than the world had ever see previously or since? None of them had any initials after their names. Several of them had little if any formal education of any kind.

Want more evidence? Abe Lincoln is regarded as one of the wisest and best Presidents and most decent and knowledgeable people in history. He never went to college and had virtually no schooling at all.

Want something more recent? Pick any of current top 10 most valuable companies in the world that started in the last generation. Almost none of them, especially the STEM and tech companies, were started and built by college graduates.

By all means, if you excel in academics and you choose to pursue that path, go for it. If you don't, what makes more sense? Going into tens of thousands of dollars of debt without any income and get stressed out and discouraged by shit you simply suck at or going out and having SOMEONE PAY YOU while you learn stuff that you might be good at and even enjoy doing?

Well, the Soviet commies really did engineer the psyop stuff. Supposedly they spent much more on psych' warfare than weaponry.

It sure seems Soros has figured out how to weaponize the derangement syndromes, or just to create a market reaction, like when he "broke the Bank of England". Many cases exist where money/power comes from manufactured crisis. "Pump and dump" is a stock market scheme, "pump and dump on deplorables" is the political version perhaps. The left pumps up the SJWs, then dumps their problems (projection) on the deplorable irredeemables.

The PC Religion is designed by cultural Marxists with intent of conquering. So we have to take back the schools and teach fundamental Americanism, controlled pathways for the good citizen to lead a full life.

424 used to be that kids were taught the virtues.

And were taught to practice the virtues.

And were taught that mastering the virtues leads to success, happiness and even more . . .

If you have children in the grade school years.
I highly recommend the "Education in Virtue" system. Set goals, have the kids accomplish those tasks. Show them what virtue they practiced, reinforce with a playing card for that virtue. Let them collect them to a certain goal and then reward after. It even works with special needs kids, because it is concrete. Each card has a personal story of an actual person - a saint and what they did. Yes there are repeats but repetition is good. I have a large supply of "obedience" cards, because that's what my kids need to work on.

The educators manual explains the virtues and the corresponding negative traits that are opposite of each virtue. Explains in detail the complementary gifts etc. etc.

if you are strongly anti-Catholic, this is not for you. It is explicitly St. Thomas Acquinas based old school Catholic teaching. The only thing new is the method and reinforcement system, which absolutely makes a difference.

If you are stuck in a public school and wish your kids could learn values. "Truth in the Heart" - is religious education DVD's grades 1-5 available. Taught by Dominican Nuns. Again, YMMV but my special needs kids, watch them and ask to watch them. But the get to eat popcorn while the do . . .

Kids today need to be told no. They also need to see the benefits of following the rules, and denying their own appetites for long term good. However, your KID will follow your example a lot more closely then they will EVER follow your advice.

If you have kids, straighten your own Sh!+ out now - if you want your kids to have any chance!

That is the end of this public service announcement. To any offended . . . ask yourselves why not?

451 My opinion: Cause: 84% of U.S. students have absolutely no business being in college. I agree. They can't handle it. They are not suited to it. No amount of federally guaranteed debt that will never be repaid will change that because everyone has different talents and abilities. Very few have talents and abilities that will benefit from and be enhanced by higher education of any kind. There is no mystery to this, since likely 100% of that 84% had poor grades from K- 12 and have never
demonstrated any ability beyond average, at best.

The problem is with the outdated notion that if you go to a four year college and get a bachelors degree, that that per se will result in happiness and prosperity.

That was universally true back when colleges were for the most intelligent. A degree would in and of itself demonstrate intelligence and competence. State, religious, and free colleges were founded so that anyone in society had a chance to get a degree if they were smart enough without worrying about being from a poor or middle class background.

This is not the case today.

Today a bachelors degree is like a high school degree used to be: A minimum level of competence that excluded the very stupid, rather than exalt the very smart.

Beyond that, a degree is worth it if you are getting a STEM degree, or if you can use the alma mater connections to network. But only then.

573 What do you have against nurses (RNs), dentists (DDSs or DMDs), and veterinatians (DVMs)?

Posted by: Basement Cat at March 08, 2017 02:11 PM (3C9q2)

Nothing in particular.

Let's use RN as an example.
Option A) Person X wants to be a nurse. Person X pays tens of thousands of dollars (cash/ debt/ other) and has zero ( or negligible and, mostly likely irrelevant) income for 4+ years. They graduate and on their first day of work, being training to learn whatever their supposed to be doing.

Option B) Person X wants to be a nurse. They go out and find a doctor/ hospital/ whatever that they believe provides good service, is knowledgeable, and they respect. Person X says, "Hey, how about you pay me some small amount of money while I do all the things necessary to be of increasing use to you over time. If I cant keep up, fire me and you got your bedpans emptied for cheap for a while. If I deliver, pay me more in accordance with the value I add over time or i will take what I've learned and sell it to someone who will.

In 4 years time, which is most likely to be a better nurse? Which one is better positioned to succeed for the long term (particularly considering debt and income)? Which has greater potential value for the next 4 years, assuming both are equally successful in their chosen path?

The only difference I see is that Option A has 4 years of debt without income and must demand an entry level job at a higher rate of pay because of it... and they think that they are too good to empty bed pans because that is what LVNs are for.

Shorter, simpler example: who do you want working on your car (or your body, or anything else) on their first day of work? The person who read books about it for 4 years under the guidance of someone who personifies "those who cannot do, teach" or someone who has worked their way up under the one-on-one guidance oracticing professionals for 4 years?

Yes, This is oversimplified. I'm aware of internships, practicing medical college, etc. but the base point remains. One actually got paid and had to earn their value and position over time or got fired. The other paid people and is as likely to have skated by on Ds and Cs and beer pong for 4 years as they are to have actually learned anything.

Initials do not demonstrate competence. They only demonstrate that someone's check cleared. When someone chooses to pay you for years instead of firing you and replacing you with someone else or going without anyone at all and saving the expense... that is a demonstration of value and competence.

The premise was simple: People go to our website/ social media, etc. and tell us, "So and so needs to be bitchslapped" and gives us their story (free content, web traffic, etc.= ad dollars= mailbox money). We pick the most worthy (least likely to result in litigation of some sort), drive over, bitch slap said offender, and post the video on our website/ social media.

586 I have to say that this explains a lot of the behavior of many of the people I deal with in my business. So many of them are on trigger alert all the time and react with extreme hostility. They do not know how to respond to disagreements other than combat. That they go immediately to being offended also proves your point.

As others have pointed out, they see victimhood as proof of personal virtue. I have seen some of them actually compete in who was victimized worse; it was a pecking order matter for them and their claims of victimhood were mostly quite trivial (the rest of us call those events "real life").

I am sending this column to many of my colleagues.
