Monday Overnight Open Thread (2/27/17) Yup. It's Monday Edition

Monday

Monday is the day of the week between Sunday and Tuesday. According to the international standard ISO 8601 it is the first day of the week. The name of Monday is derived from Old English Mōnandæg and Middle English Monenday, originally a translation of Latin dies lunae "day of the Moon".

Day of the Moon? More like day of the suck.

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Writing is not necessarily something to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterwards. Robert Heinlein

Quote II

Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality. Edgar Allan Poe

Quote III

There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed. Ernest Hemingway

The plight of the parasites.

In modern America, government is a form of workfare for the most part. There are roughly 2.8 million Federal workers, not including uniformed personnel. When you add in state and local government, there are roughly 22 million people employed by government in the United States. The labor force is roughly 150 million so that means 15% of the nation’s workers are employed by government. Of course, literally no one knows the size of the contract workforce. The best guess is about 5 million, but it could be much more.

Toxic-Countries-World-Map-Full-Width-Tall-1580x538.jpg

The world's most toxic countries.

To create their map, The Eco Experts scrutinized data for 135 countries on carbon emissions, air pollution levels, and energy consumption, along with how much the countries draw on renewable energy. They also considered how many people have died from poor air quality. Bringing together all the individual rankings, The Eco Experts determined which countries are most damaging the environment and risking public health.

The difference between WHISKEY and WHISKY.

A classic Manhattan wouldn’t be the same without whiskey—or is it whisky? You might have seen the liquor spelled both ways on a bar menu and thought that it was just a typo, but there is actually a major difference between whiskey and whisky. Let’s get to the bottom of the barrel.

The spelling depends on the whiskey’s—or whisky’s—country of origin.

The ONT Musical Interlude

February 27, 1977, Keith Richards was arrested at Toronto’s Harbour Castle Hotel, after an ounce of heroin was found following a raid of his hotel room by 15 Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Richards, who was charged with possession with intent to traffic, faced seven years to life in prison. Bail was set at $25,000 (£14,705)via thisdayinmusic.com/

Australia at ends battling carp. Let's introduce Herpes to wipe them out.

Australian wildlife officials have been dealing with the common carp for years. The aggressive, invasive species does some $500 million AUS in damage every year to regional Australia, especially to places along the Murray River. They’re tried trapping and commercial fishing and exclusion. Not a single approach has worked especially well.

So they’re turning to herpes. Seriously.

This ought to work out well. (Sarcasm dripping)

President Trump strikes again. He snubs White House Correspondent's Dinner.

Headed to Germany on official business? Don't plan on eating bratwurst or schnitzel or any other piece of meat.

Germany’s environment minister Barbara Hendricks announced earlier this week that meat and fish would no longer be served at official functions held by the Ministry of the Environment. Because animal agriculture creates such a toll on the environment, and plays a significant role in climate change and degradation of water and soil, Hendricks argues that the German government needs to do the responsible thing:

“We’re not telling anyone what they should eat. But we want to set a good example for climate protection, because vegetarian food is more climate-friendly than meat and fish.”

Tom Perez beat Keith Ellison for DNC chair. Who is Tom Perez?

llison's appeal to Democrats was in his openly deranged radical extremism, he was billed as the outsider, the upstart, the new wave to freshen up the stale party that had lost so badly last November. Perez was somehow declared the moderate by default. Fact is, he was just as extreme in his views, but less noisy than Ellison. Instead of Ellison's cacaphony and creepy associates, Perez had a actual track record. It could be summed up as one damaging-to-democracy act after another, all in the name of advancing he Democratic Party's partisan interests. What it means is that he places party over state, same as Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez did.

A fool and his money are soon parted. Government's stupid wasteful spending continues.

The National Institutes of Health is spending nearly $400,000 studying transwomen in Uganda.

A new grant worth $163,996 was awarded just six days into the Trump administration, continuing a project that was initially awarded in April 2016.

Leading researchers on the project say it is "problematic" that there is an "almost complete lack of research examining the HIV risk of sexual minority women and transgender people" in the African country.

Quote from a 60 year member of our church on why members resign from the board after a year of service routinely: "Its like making sausage. Once you get in their a see how it's done, you'll never want to eat it again."

The burgers at those places are $10, plus there is the issue of tipping and time to sit down and wait to be waited on. Then there is the thing of feeding the kids. Machines have already been invented that can do fast food prep from start to finish. They just cost too much to be cost-effective right now...

But as technology grows and idiots push ill-conceived labor laws, the cost of the robot is getting lower all the time where the cost of labor is perpetually rising.

It's inevitable that the machines will take over the food service industry eventually, but it'll happen a whole lot faster if they keep up with the $15/hr stupidity.

162 For clarification, servers and bartenders still have to make at least minimum wage.

If the company pays you $2.13 per hour as a tipped employee, you still must make enough reported tips to achieve minimum wage or the restaurant must adjust your hourly rate to achieve minimum wage.

In other words, if I work for a base rate of $2.13 per hour in a state with a $15 MW and make only $20 in tips in two hours, the company would half to raise my base pay rate to $5 per hour to achieve the $15 minimum wage requirement.

I'm surprised it won't go up more. Fast food is very labor intensive.

They have been trying for years to cut the number of staff down, and it has shown up in the places. Salad bars? Gone, too labor expensive having one to two people cleaning and maintaining it. Drink filler? Why not put the machine out in the dining area and let customers fill their own? Plus, the customer thinks they are making out on the deal by getting "free" refills.

199 Baby Sister Update

Sorry for the hiatus, but there hasn't been much to report (which is actually okay). However, got this today from Hubby:

"Joyce's visit this morning with Dr Tran [chemo doc] went well. He says that her motor function improved especially in right arm. On the other hand, she's developed diabetes from steroids and will need to start metformin to combat that.

She also got a second dose of Avastin today. Overall Joyce seems improved.

One other interesting note: gene sequencing of the tumor was ordered today. This will help identify mutations that may be receptive to treatment. We don't expect results for several weeks. I have been very impressed with Dr Tran. Sometimes the coordination of ancillary staff is less than optimal, but not in this case.
"

I was also impressed with Dr T when I was down there a few weeks ago.

So, 3 steps forward, 1 back. All things considered, think I'll take it.

A factor a lot of people don't control for is just how much it'll raise the cost of every good and service across the board.

Because those of us who make significantly more than minimum wage but would get swamped by the minimum jumping to $15 aren't going to suddenly be content making as much as some kid that just walked into a McDonalds for his first work day.

People will demand proportional raises.

You double the minimum wage, and I guarantee that the cost of goods and services will come close to doubling once the new wages are all set and built in.

Bernie was sent out to make Hillary look like a "moderate" when it looked like the GOP candidate would be coming from the conservative portion of the party. Let's face it, Cruz and Rubio looked damned right wing when compared to Romney/McCain/W./Dole/GHW. It was the old Clinton tactic of "Triangulation", make it seem you are in the middle and not beholden to the far left or the right. Worked in 92 and 96, so they thought it would work in 16.

Except, it didn't work out that way. Bernie gained traction like Obama did in 2008, and Hillary had to scramble all the way through the primary to get ahead of him.

Don't forget, both Obama and Bernie did what they did against Clinton with Hillary having the heavyweights of the Dem machine in her corner. Her churn rate on her campaign cash was huge when it came to salaries because she paid to have everyone on her staff.

That's part of it. It's also a ponzi scheme to increase the pool of taxable income to pay for unfunded government pension plans.

This is why fiscally conservative states lie Tennessee and Florida that have no state income tax, but instead depend on sales tax and user fees for state funding have no pressure to increase minimum wage standards.

Yes. Which is why I referred to it in a cynical aside.

Someone who works in the press, and who didn't realize that you're not supposed to commit the sin of practicing actual old-school shoe-leather journalism, asked the question, hey, is it normal for that part of that garment to rip away as trivially as it did? Is that cup normally held in place by mere snaps?

And they tracked down the fetish clothing maker who had originally made that particular corsetty garment, and asked them about it, and whether they'd originally designed and made it in such a manner, and the response from the firm was, are you kidding? No way.

The NFL halftime show had bought it off the rack from them and then extensively retailored and modified the article to produce the "accidental" reveal.

356 @236 And that's the real purpose of raising the minimum wage.

Union wage increases > more union dues > more contributions to Democrat candidates
-----------------

Actually, here in California, right after the unions successfully got the new minimum wage laws passed, they then turned around and lobbied the same governments to try and get exemptions carved out for union contracts.

In short, the goal was to make union workers appear to be *more* affordable to employers than non-union workers.

Well, howdy-do to you too!

Geeze, I'm glad Tucker turned up.
A few weeks ago, while walking Sophie The Dog, we found a dead cat by the road. It was as though the animal was just curled up asleep. Looked, and seemed perfectly okay, but, expired. Looked very healthy, and no evidence of trauma.

I did not recognize the cat, but it had a flea collar, so it certainly belonged to someone. I thought about putting up a poster, but did not feel up to telling some relieved owner who thought their cat was found, that their cat was dead.

I argued with myself about it for a while, but finally brought the cat home and buried it in the 'pet cemetery' with our others. I think I felt almost as badly about it as if it were my own.

Losing a pet is not the same as losing a friend or family member, but there is something about their innocence and absolute dependence upon us that makes it an especially hard thing.

In those dark times, the term "Little Ice Age" was just expanding to cover a longer period. Today, it describes the whole period from the Medieval Warm Spell until the late 19th century. Back then, it applied only to part of the 18th century. 1750 was when it started to warm up.

The joke is, the weather of those years was taught as evidence of human impact on climate. A fairly fast increase in the use of hot fuels, dry wood, charcoal and coal, just before 1700, had caused a lot of smoke and a lot of clouds, which reflected and blocked sunlight. After a few years, it got cold as hell.

The Thames started to freeze most years, mail coaches got stuck in snow drifts, and house chimneys always had smoke coming out -- unlike the normal weather of England for the preceding several hundred years. All the stuff you see in romanticized winter scenes, a la Currier and Ives, were news pictures at the time, since it was all so shockingly new to everyone.

This is a long way of saying that Bill Nye is no climate "scholar," let alone scientist.

Funny, as soon as I got to the 1750 part I was thinking wtf is Nye serious? The mini ice age of that period is legend among luthiers because the wood from the period had tighter growth rings, which translated to more lines per inch in the tops used for most stringed instruments, which theoretically makes for better tone. They say part of Stradivarius's magic was that he was using wood from that period during his golden era.

Not sure wtf Nye is talking about, it was frigging cold in that period.

It's a tough call whether to seek the owner in a case like that. Almost the exact same thing happened to me many years ago. Found a young, healthy cat dead beside my driveway (I lived on a busy street). Unable to find the cat's owner, I spent a good half-day digging a grave and giving it a proper burial.

I struggled with what to do, but kept thinking that if my own beloved cat had met such a fate, I would want to know. So, when an ad appeared in the lost-and-found-pets section of the local paper accurately describing the unfortunate kitty I'd buried, I called one of the two numbers listed. A man answered.

It was hard to find the right words, knowing that I was about to dash some family's hope of a happy reunion with their pet. The guy seemed mad at me for calling--accused me of being the one who'd run the cat over, told me he wished I'd never called, and added that he had no intention of ever telling his family what he knew.

By time he was done, I, too, wished I'd never called. I learned that the "right thing" isn't necessarily the same for everybody.

i went over, but he was too spooked for me to get him, but he let Resident Evil approach and grab him when she got home from w*rk.

An awful lot of people don't care about who's carpet they're on. It's the internet, open to the world.

But the real reason I lurk so much here is that most posters do respect and love Ace and his place.

Hugs to the Horde. And Ace and Cobs. Bless you all.

483 new toy update: got my Carcano Type I home today (Italian made Arisaka) and it's as close to cherry as you can ask for a rifle made in in the late 30's.

light dings, etc, in the wood, strong clean bore w/ no visible pits to the naked eye, once i got the potatoes out of it. haven't cleaned the bolt yet, but if there's a "primer ring" it's faint, and the serial number "A1846" likely indicates it's one of the first made... (they apparently ran A-N, from 0001 to 9999, although accounts vary)

pretty much SFA in the way of markings that i can see in a cursory exam, and, unsurprisingly, no imperial seal.

still a kewl bit of oddball history for the toy chest, to join the others.

*sigh* Agreed. What is it with these people that they can't just do whatever it is they're good at--sports, acting, whatever--and leave their genitals out of it? It's way too late to have any shock effect; I don't give a flying rat's ass what you do with your genitals. And if what you do with your genitals is your big claim to fame, then go into the pron biz where someone will appreciate having it thrown in their face.

You've got a point that I've wanted to make for a while now. Why does a person's sexuality have to be their defining characteristic?

At some point, we need to have a sexual counter-revolution where we go "alright, keep it in the bedroom already."

Everything is sexualized now. I'm f-ing tired of it. It's not the only thing in life that matters!

And...the cobloggers are less tolerant, in part to keep Ace from having to deal with the worst of it.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Trump has misled the

yet, Pelosi said, because "many of the president's supporters are not
ready to accept the fact that their judgement may not have been so great
in voting for him."
