Super-Light GAINZZZ Thread

I'm a natural night-owl, and I think it's because I dread the new day. Seriously. I think I have an aversion to going to bed, because I feel I didn't get enough done and I'm just not done with the current day yet.

But as you know, sleep is important, not just how much, but when. These videos from that guy I keep linking lately -- this on the importance of sleep, and this on how to improve sleep -- finally gave me the propaganda I needed to start going to bed by 12.

Note that it doesn't matter if this is true or not; whether true or not, it's still useful propaganda for getting me to do what I've long wanted to do (go to bed at a normal hour).

So the propaganda is this: For most people (it varies, but for most), the period of peak human growth hormone production is between 10 pm and 2am, if you're asleep during those hours. If you're not asleep, you missed out, and you'll just have to limp along with your sub-sub-standard HGH production.

Human growth hormone has so many absurdly positive effects on the human body that there's a black market in getting exogenous doses of it. It's called the "Youth Hormone" because it may slow aging effects, which is increasingly important to me as I contemplate, one day, entering my thirties.

So, after reading a lot about how to increase HGH (naturally) through stupid herbal supplements and crap, it turns out one of the most important ways is just to go to sleep at a decent time like a normal person.

I have been doing that (though I've been having sleep problems for unrelated reasons).

A point this guy makes in those videos is that there's actual sleep and then there's effective sleep. If you drink caffeine any time before bed (some people say you need to stop like ten hours before bed, which seems extreme), you may fall asleep, but you might cause yourself to have ineffective sleep where you just don't push into the deeply restorative phases of sleep very deeply or for very long. So if you go to bed with caffeine or alcohol in your system, your clock might say you got seven hours of sleep, but a more accurate measure, based on how long you spent in deep restorative sleep, might be more like six hours.

Oh and I mentioned this already, but thanks for the various tips on overcoming insomnia. One of the most effective things for me was putting a cold compress on my pillow to chill the blood in my neck and back. The body reads "cold" as "time for sleep," apparently.

Another thing I've been doing -- and given the weather, it's been pretty easy to do this -- is making sure I get real sunlight in my face soon after I wake up, to reset the body clock.*

Another simple thing which is harder to do that I'd've imagined -- drinking a lot of water. Which, yeah, helps GAINZZZ.

I think this might be a problem some have with getting enough water. I think this is my own problem. When you're dehydrated, your brain is kind of fuzzy, and you're low energy.

So what do you drink? Water? No, you're fuzzy-headed and you're low energy. You drink coffee, tea, or Coke Zero, Jack!

But of course those cause you to pee out more water, dehydrating you further. Making you more fuzzy headed and lethargic.

So what do you drink? Water? No way, give me another Coke Zero! I'm tired, baby!

So anyway, I think the message here is you just gotta suck it up a few days and really pound that sweet sweet water, Marco Rubio style, until you get properly hydrated and not tired and slow-witted and in need of constant caffeine.

A couple of weeks ago, when I was drinking water, I was feeling pretty good. Now because of low sleep, I've been having Coke Zero and not so much water, and I'm just dead tired and worse yet I'm getting cramps a lot. Almost like my body is saying, "Drink water, asshole."

So that's all I got this FriGAINZZZ. The two cheapest and most important supplements out there, which everyone ignores because they're trying to track down Distilled Tiger Breath mixed with Powdered Foot Fungus From a Shaolin Monk's Slipper from a black-market vitamin dealer in Kuala Lampur.

My GAINZZZ this week: None. Tired as shit. I didn't even expect GAINZZZ because I knew just by the way I felt that my body was pure crap. Happy I just didn't go backwards.

Broccoli Sprouts: Seems like a cheap way to have a constant supply of high-nutrient low-carb veggies.

Broccoli sprouts are loaded with anti-oxidants, with much more suphurophane by weight than broccoli.

And you can just make mason-jars full with a week or so's growing, in a mason jar inside your house.

I just got some seeds and the jars. Haven't actually started the process yet.

I know this guy is a hippie but hear him out.

* I forgot the point of this blather -- even though my sleep has been poor due to CPAP problems, I kind of like going to bed now because I kind of like getting up. So I don't dread the next day. I imagine I'll feel better about it once I get some good sleep.

6 I technically get enough hours of sleep but it's always in chapters. I have complete dream cycles - or at least the stories resolve themselves in Dreamland -- but I haven't had a solid night's sleep without sleep aids in years. I wonder what the cumulative effects of this will be.

11 I'm down 13 pounds in about 6 weeks. Not stellar, but I haven't been really as strict as I normally would be with limiting alcohol.

And I've really been playing around with the concept of a minimal workout. Basically a 10 pound kettle ball in the kitchen, so every time I go for coffee or water, I do a minute full range of motion (squat to calf extension, slightly bent back so the return works my abs). Follow it w/ half pushups against the counter, and some trap work with squats assisted by palms on the counter. Trying to engage the major muscles without taking a lot of time to do it.

It's been most noticeable in the fit of my clothes (particularly when going out w/ the sidearm with a IWB holster).

Finally starting to see definition again.

the breakfast thing is dumb. as for veggies, there are good lower-carb veggies like broccoli and spinach. Still can't have too much of them (like 5 carbs per hand-sized serving), but they are good for you. They say.

I'm doing moviegique's thing of making brocolli sprouts. Apparently they have like 100x the nutrients full grown brocolli does by weight. Or something. I'll add that video.

47 I only learned to drink water this year. I've been Uber driving late nights and I found that my traditional go-to, coffee, has spikes and troughs and that if I just drank water to stay hydrated I did much better over the long haul.

My other objection to water was that it doesn't get you high. I'd been drinking pretty much only distilled spirits for years but am now sober as a judge. So what to drink when booze is out of the quesiton? Coke? Yuck, sugar. Coke Zero? Yuck, carcinogens. (OK, I haven't actually got science for that, but I have to assume that anything that creates Coke flavor and apparent sweetness has to be made out of cancer).

So all that's left is green tea, which I'm out of, and water. Water is surprisingly good.

48 I did a cleanse with activated charcoal early this week, to keep the Dread Pirate Candida at bay.

Don't freak out, guys: I'm talking about the way it infests the digestive tracts of the entire Western World, due to our crappy diets and use of antibiotics.

If you have chronic headaches, carb cravings, gut flab you can't lose, nail fungus, brain fog, general lethargy..you have too much intestinal Candida.
http://www.amymyersmd.com/2015/11/10-signs-you-have-candida-overgrowth-and-what-to-do-about-it/

Wanna find out? Make a strong tea with ground cinnamon and drink a cup a day for 3 days. If you get the runs, you have a bad case of Candida.

Getting rid of mine (which is super simple with activated charcoal) was the best thing I ever did. I went from 2-3 headaches a week to 2-3 headaches a YEAR.
I'm super pissed it took me till my mid-30's to figure that out.

So no lifting this week. I've also been bad about eating carbs, although I've been good with keeping to a six-hour window to eat.

I've been working through the Duolingo Italian course for the past week and a half. I've also signed up for a blacksmithing class in two weeks, followed that weekend by a motorcycle rider class. Since my school schedule changed I'll no longer be able to go dancing on Thursday nights, but I'll find something else to keep me occupied. I think maybe I'll start back up with drawing and painting.

As someone who spent 5+ years and thousands of dollars chasing magical Growth Hormone gains, it's a waste of time and money worrying about it.

Unless you want to spend several thousands of dollars and find a doctor to write you a 'script, you will not be able to significantly manipulate your GH.

Yes DEEP sleep is very beneficial to recovery, growth. There is nothing better than getting a straight 8 hours sleep. At our age these events occur rarely. L-Dopa is excellent for inducing Deep Sleep, but nothing will work if you're schedule is erratic or you're stressed or whatever.

66 A very effective way to introduce water into your system is to drink it with Scotch.

Now don't do it all at once, mind you.

Just slowly put a few drops into a glass filled with Scotch and drink. Then, do it again but go up by like one drop. Over a period of about a year you want to reach a ratio of 5 parts Scotch to 1 part water.

Denver is like San Francisco. Sanctuary city, D governor, D mayor, 1/3 hispanic, 1/10 black, and the heat is on.

Can this guy get re-elected in 2020? Likely not.

75 Earlier in the week I was down 6 pounds for the month. Haven't weighed myself since then, trying to lose 3 more before month end.

Didn't make it to the gym this week though. Also had to stop getting shots for low T because when my insurance reset in Jan. 1 each shot went from $7.75 to $38.75, so I'm done with that. Don't have the money for that.

Also have trouble sleeping Rarely sleep more than 2 hours in a row regardless of what I do...drink before bed or not, read, work out, whatever. Plus I have to get up and go to the bathroom at least once or twice a night.

Last night though I took both ZMA and a pain med that makes you drowsy. Slept like a baby for 8-9 hours and didn't get up to go once. Might have to try that again.

Wash them, drain, pat dry, and cut stem end and add a small X incision in the fresh cut stem end. Toss in olive oil and salt only.

Roast high heat for 30-45 min, stirring/scraping every 15 min. When almost done (ie soft and getting brown all over), add a splash or three of balsamic vinegar. Stir/scrap and serve.

By Friday, the weekend is starting and I'm in party mode.

ace is trying to get you all out of shape. He's doing this by subtly push the rate of the gainz threads to less than one per week. He does a few Monday, then one on Friday, then skips a week, then does one on Monday, then repeats. It results in a rate of slightly less than once a week, with the aim of making you less fit.

154 I can't imagine how you guys get to down to 10 carbs a day. I average between 25-35 a day, and that's from nuts and veggies. Of course, I was probably consuming a couple of hundred grams a day before I went low carb, so even at 35 I'm losing weight.

I'm kinda tired of meat, though. Sheesh.

"drinking a lot of water."

There's a downside to drinking lots of water.

I used to drink 2-4 liters of (refrigerator-chilled) club soda every day (VERY much easier than regular tap or bottled water).

I had to empty my bladder very much more frequently, perhaps every 30 minutes. I could/had to get up 3 or 4 times during the night. My bladder said so. Clearly and unmistakably. This is a hint.

Driving and walking became ... things that needed to be planned ... carefully. I found that it was possible to be stuck at a light and suddenly have my bladder "inform me thusly".

I could be on foot and 1 mile from the nearest facility, and get the same message imperative ... and kindergarten flashbacks during a hard walk.

I'm down to 1-2 liters per day (mostly club soda, some canned tea-lemonade), and have less worries ... not none, just less. Planning is easier, but still necessary. See, occasionally a false alarm occurs. Actually, it's more of at 5 minute pre-alarm.

This is likely way-too-much information, and there may be other issues with drinking lots of water (you drown at the Rushing-a-Frat consumption level), but everyone should be aware.

191 This is about GAINZZ, so bear with me:

Last weekend I met up with an old friend I hadn't seen since October. This is a woman who has had to endure more tough breaks and heartache than most of us do. She was diagnosed with severe arthritis when she was still in her 20's and her hands are gnarled and misshapen and it takes her a good half hour to get dressed every morning. She married young and her husband was abusive, so she left him. She took in her sister's two small children when her sister died suddenly of an aneurysm and successfully raised them herself despite her own health problems. Her arthritis is getting worse and she has to take lots of meds to deal with the pain. Despite all that, she's funny and sharp as hell.

Because her condition makes it hard to exercise she's prone to weight gain. When I saw her in October, she was in despair because she was up to 235 - and she's about 5'4".

She went on a low carb diet - strictly fish, meat, veggies, and dairy - and started swimming at a local Y, although believe me, the last thing you want to do on a Wisconsin winter night is go out and swim.

She's down to 180. That's 55 freaking lbs. since the start of October. She told me she had been practically living on pasta and doughnuts and crap like Doritos and now she doesn't even put sugar in her coffee.

I was really stunned, after seeing her in October. And it made me feel ashamed. I haven't felt 100% since my knee surgery last year and I've slacked off. But here was someone with a serious chronic condition and she didn't say, "Oh, I have bad arthritis, my life is over and what's the fucking use, I'm a 60 year old woman, might as well give up and get a motorized wheelchair." No, she's fighting to be as healthy as she can be. She looks older than 60 - taking arthritis meds for 35 years will do that to you. But I admire her spirit and gumption so much.

Believe me, if she can do it we all can.

VX is a persistent nerve agent: both the attackers and first responders, as well as anyone who was exposed to the body, would be at risk, since it is both a contact AND vapor hazard.

not to mention the fact that the LD50 is some microscopic amount.

230 Ace, you might find you make a real dent in your insomnia if you exhaust yourself with cardio exercise daily, regardless of whatever other form of exercise might also be on your schedule. Past a certain point of physical exhaustion, not just temporary muscle tiredness, you body will no longer have the resources to support a chirping, spinning brain, and it will force it to knock off for a good while.

I've found it plenty easy to be bone deep muscle tired but still wide awake, mind spinning, but I've never managed to stay awake after I've spent my heart and lungs into exhaustion.

You just don't want to do so within four hours or so of trying to go to sleep.

I do not like sweets, although if a friend says, "here have this cookie", I'll eat it, and it isn't unpleasant, but it's not something I would voluntarily subject myself to.

357 Generally taken every 6 to 8 hours, the maximum dose of NSAIDs per day is 2400 mg which is 12 over-the-counter tablets. Liver-safe: Ibuprofen and other NSAIDS rarely affect the liver. Unlike acetaminophen (Tylenol) most NSAIDs are absorbed completely and have negligible first-pass hepatic (liver) metabolism. You may now continue.

367 I would recommend changing up your sprouts a little, Ace. They come with toxins, too. You don't want to over-do any one kind, especially alfalfa sprouts.

Anyway, you could start with broccoli, onion, radish and maybe buckwheat. There are others. I recommend pathogen-tested seeds meant for sprouting.

Red clover is probably less toxic than alfalfa sprouts, and the sprouts taste better. They have some hormonal activity, though. Might want to cook both alfalfa and clover sprouts if you eat them often. And cook bean sprouts.

388 THe max dose (and standard dose) depends on the particular NSAID. THere are a shit ton of them. WIth this damned RA, I've used many different ones, and that was only a fraction of the total number of them out there.

For example, for naproxen, the max daily dose is 1000 - 1200mg or so.

Now, one I took for a long time, and no longer can tolerate, is meloxicam (Mobic). Max dose is just 15mg for it, and 7.5mg per day is the starting dose. Except for me, where they started on the full 15mg.

There was a story I read just the other day. How Brussel Sprouts taste is a matter of genetics. Some people, and I'm one of them, can taste some of the compounds much better than others, and that makes it taste bitter. Very bitter.

396 Just to reiterate something I've noted before. Even dating back to the early eighties, there was an exact picture of the kind of unhinged, foaming at the mouth kind of liberal we see today: Rik, in the British sitcom, the Young Ones. He is too stupid to be reasoned with. He makes idiotic assertions and makes frequent irrational statements, such as that Neil, the pathetic hippie, is a 'fascist', in order to rationalize his hatred.

I think Rik could be resurrected as an icon for the right for all that is wrong with leftardism.

416 Actually, if you want to know why spinach is considered not just a super-food, but a super-duper-food, by so many so-called "experts"...

Yeah, Popeye did contribute a lot to that, to getting this mistaken idea out into mainstream pop culture.

But it was actually started by something we all know and scorn... government incompetence. A federal government study on the nutritional value of various foods back in the 1920s listed spinach as having way more iron than it actually has, because some bureaucrat put a decimal point in the wrong place on the final report.

Spinach was thus widely believed to have ten times as much iron as it actually has, putting it on par with beef as far as that particular metric goes.

429 A point this guy makes in those videos is that there's actual sleep and then there's effective sleep.

I drink coffee all day long. I drink it right before I go to sleep. I even wake up to go have some more coffee - I'm happy microwaving a cup that's in the pot. I sleep an average of 5 or 6 hours a night and I almost never feel tired.

I like being me ... but then, that's probably why I scored a 22 on the narcissism test.

446 I like cilantro in small amounts. I don't mind brussels sprouts; I'll eat them if I'm at a restaurant and that's the default side dish that comes with my entree.

The main vegetable that I will avoid at all costs is asparagus. I find it just absolutely disgusting, and I think it's for the same reason some of you folks can't stand cilantro and/or brussels sprouts; I taste something in it that a lot of people don't, due to some sort of genetic quirk.

Asparagus tastes like rot to me, like something that died and is decomposing. And that veiny texture doesn't help things, either; between the taste, and the texture, and the shape, to me it's like eating rotting severed dicks.

460 There is some interesting genetics with Asparagus. I love the stuff. But it makes my pee smell rank. And that's where the genes come in. There's a gene that allows you to smell those compounds from it you excrete in the urine.

No gene, you don't smell it. If you've got the gene, you can smell the hell out of it.

I think the distribution is such that a large majority of the population can smell it, and only a minority can't.

465 Pomegranates. Loaded with antioxidants and other essentials. Our new home has a mature pomm tree that fruits like crazy. But for this cheap source of pomms there's no way I would have found how much these things help. Blood pressure is lower and various other blood work numbers including lipids have dropped to healthy levels since I've started making these a big part of the diet.

468 51 Is there any way to make brussel sprouts taste good?

Posted by: Toad-O at February 24, 2017 07:58 PM (cct0t)

Just reading this. If you are still around, try this recipe--I've been using it this week, and it is delicious. I soak the brussel sprouts in water for 20 minutes first to hopefully get any sediment to drop to the bottom of the water bowl. Then, follow the recipe.
http://www.food.com/recipe/brussels-sprouts-in-garlic-butter-21761

Oh, also, I leave the garlic in; I don't remove it.

469 Water, is MUCH easier to drink when it's room temperature. I run mine through the Brita filter in the fridge, then pour it off into a big water bottle.

471 Ace - cramps? Gatorade. If you find the taste of it disgusting, cut it with water.

Just whatever you do, get that whore diet soda out of your life. Maybe it's the carbonation you like. There are machines for carbonating fluids. So many healthy juices available. Pomegranate, cranberry, blueberry -- combinations of them. Cut them with water too if you're on an ascetic diet.

But diet soda is bad chemistry.
