Cornard Wood, near Sudbury, Suffolk
Thomas Gainsborough

There is a mildly goofy self portrait that Gainesborough did in 1754 that amuses the hell out of me. His portraits are, for the most part, marvelous and serious, but this one has a touch of whimsy that tells me that he had a sense of humor, especially about himself.

Poke around his works and you will quickly see why he is considered one of the great British artists....he was a grand landscape painter, and an equally accomplished portraitist!

Nice, evocative painting.

The thing is though, and I suppose this is true of most portraits, all his paintings of the rich gentry seem to feature faces that seem to ooze money.

Prior to the mid 19th-century, paper was made from cloth rags. That's where "rag picker" comes from. The pages from books of that era don't yellow or get brittle, which is the case with paper made from wood pulp.

60 that creek is going to flood that road in the rainy season.

Too much geography and features there, really. You got fog and roads and woodcutters and hummocks and creeks and small hills and jackasses and ladies and trees, but they are all infilled as it were.

I wonder about that. Remington and more modern painters did a lot of open space and sparse features, where the older landscapers liked to cram everything in short of the elephants and the column of elk in the distance, like some sort of rococo altar covered in landscape.

Granted, Georgia O'Keeffe's landscape with one giant floating skull would seem a bit spare to a Georgian landscape buyer, but they seem to want to celebrate the broad experience of the countryside by cramming it all together on one canvas.

104 I love happy trees, BigJames. I adore happy trees, I am ecstatic about large groves of mixed oak and beech!

But the majesty of a summer woods is in the stillness and solitude, its expanses of meres and hummocks of reeds and grass gently soughing to the wind, its peace broken by the twitter of a bird and distant clop-clop of the laborer chopping wood, not by battalions of elk and mules and suspicious looking peasants clogging up the place as they gather around random glacial deposits and pools that barely would qualify as a water feature in your back yard.

119 CBD, Thanks for this one. I could look at this painting for hours enjoying the palette and slightly romanticized image. I wonder if he influenced some of the American painters of the Adirondack School in the 1800s. These colors and gentle contours of the natural world are so comfortable to view. Very nice.

I like Gainsborough's landscapes better than his portraits even though the portraits are what he is best known for. Go through a chronological series of his paintings and it is interesting how quickly he improved. Portraits from the 1740s are rather wooden and stylized. They remind me a bit of "American Gothic". Five years later his models are noticeably more natural and certainly more complimentary. A short time later he is at his peak with "The Blue Boy" and others. And he didn't become static in style. He continued to develop, or at least experiment, and the results are clear even to my amateur eyes.

I should see if there is information on the paints and palette Gainsborough used. They are seldom garish even when bright.

131 Over 100 so OT-

Here, by popular demand in the earlier thread, I present the story of my father's foray into the exciting world of danger and profit that is 'Worm Farming'.

So, Dad retired from the Army after thirty years creditable service. Settled back onto his 20 acre apple orchard and lived the life of a gentleman farmer. Casting about for new ways to bring in some money he had seen ads in the backs of magazines for "Worm Farming". Figured he was smart enough to make that be profitable. Researched it. Read everything he could get his hands on about the subject. Sent off the payment (?? $100 ?? $200, who knows) for his Worm Farm Starter Kit™ and built an elaborate series of worm boxes on racks out in the barn. Like deep drawers. Plywood, maybe 8 inches deep, 3' by 3' dimensions, filled with soil and I suppose some sort of special worm food.

Anyway, he seeded the boxes with the starter worms and settled back to wait for the dough to start rolling in. He tended the worms regularly (not sure if that included exercise and grooming or just feeding). The deal was that the company would buy back the worms when they reached a certain length (let's say 3 inches for the sake of the story).

The good news was that the total biomass of the worms in his boxes probably increased ten-fold.

My dad was a really good farmer.

The bad news was that those worms, in captivity, at least, multiplied very readily but did not grow any bigger than about an inch and a half. So he had a couple million worms but none big enough to sell back.

After several months, he realized this, dumped the entire kit and kaboodle out in his vegetable garden and went fishing.

He was also a really good fisherman.

134 Here's why Trump allowing the Dreamer act in place is a YUUUUGE mistake:

http://www.campusreform.org/?ID=8814

Yup. That's right CA just eliminated 20+million in financial aid for middle and lower class American students and gave it to "Dreamers" i.e.. illegal aliens to the tune of roughly 88 million.

"Dreamers" are literally stealing money which could be used for American citizens to better their lives.

So, the whole "Dreamers" thing is just another weapon by Our Betters to destroy the middle class and the American Dream for Americans

who are-

the very people who voted for Trump.

Way to shoot yourself in the foot.

I knew Trump would do things I wasn't totally on board with, but I didn't care and still don't.

However, this is a great way to lose the support of his voters- esp. middle class voters if they can't afford college to keep their kids in the middle class, while some "Dreamer" with worse grades gets a full ride.

Sad.

I just had a former colleague from work pass away this past weekend at age 60 due to pancreatic cancer. When first diagnosed, he was given 4 months to live; he lived for 17 months and agreed to take part in clinical trials of aggressive treatments (that last was so like him).

If we're in our sixties, isn't what we're experiencing passing away-wise the approach to "max expiring" in the normal curve for life expectancy?

The perception of an improving economy, improving corporate profits (which filter down to the stockholders as dividend payments), both create an environment where stock values rise, day after day.

The perception of a decaying economy will create an environment where stock values plummet suddenly.

He was always more of a pet liberal than a hard core , evil one, as far as I'm concerned. You could get irritated at his arguments, and if you watched long enough, you could see him laughing at himself when he was arguing for something even he knew was ridiculous. He was also always kind whenever a conservative was ill, died, etc. as a decent human being should be.

Funny, the stories I've read have only highlighted refugees of the single, male variety trekking into Canada. I think the logic goes like this: the only planet that we know that supports life is Earth-sized (because it is Earth), and it has liquid water on it, which is a necessary condition to support life as we know it. Hence, other planets that maintain similar conditions might support life, as there don't appear to be insurmountable obstacles to critters like us living there.

I think the reasoning goes like this:

Life as we know it requires air and water to exist.

You can only have liquid water on planets that orbit in the 'goldilocks zone' of their suns.

So let's focus on the earth-sized planets in the GZ. Not that life couldn't exist in some form elsewhere, but the GZ planets offer the most promise.

By the way, I don't give a hoot about intelligent life on other planets, if any. What I do give a hoot about is habitable planets for mankind to go to and explore. Because I'm a hatin', rapin', exploitin', colonizin' white man.

It's less that we're saying "life has to look like us" so much as we're saying that "life like us most likely exists in places like ours" and "we know that life like us exists, because we exist, but we don't know if life vastly different than us exists" so if we're looking for life, it's easier to look for things that are familiar to us at least at first.

Apparently, Ellison's past is not just filled with other people saying racist things, but him saying racist things. He's also got a reputation as a great organizer, but that reputation is built on shoddy electoral numbers that don't really suss out.

I think he's the Windows Millenium Edition of Obama.

But I'd be a bit disappointed if we find life on other planets and they're too much like us. I want freaky aliens with lasers for arms that breathe pure gamma radiation, damnit!

Best season is season 5 of Voyager.

Worst overall series is Enterprise (although it's not really bad, just very poorly conceived).

(Can't quite figure out how to paste just that one tweet, but you should be able to find it if you google him or look for JB Pritzker's Twitter feed.)

I doubt anyone will take him up on his suggestion, but I almost wish someone would as it would only serve to prove exactly the point that us normal folk are trying to make about transgender bathroom mandates, which is how easily they can (and will) be abused. #thisishowyougetmoreTrump

It's the one show that understood basic storytelling the best.

Plus, with the advent of the Roddenberry Rule at the start of TNG that said that citizens of the federation weren't allowed to have conflict between each other, a lot of the drama in each series ended up hanging on guest stars instead of the main characters. DS9 went around that by filling the cast with non-Federation characters (from Bajor, Odo, and Cardassians) that allowed for a lot of basic drama that was missing from literally every other show save TOS.

I think it's a little early to be assigning gender roles yet.

519 512 Seems like TNG crew spends a lot of time "charting" regions of the galaxy, and doing "diplomatic missions."

Overall, that was the governmental Enterprise, while TOS was more like a "Lewis and Clark" Enterprise.
Posted by: shibumi, a rational single white female and kitteh servant at February 23, 2017 11:39 AM (J5mC3)

====================

That's a good way to put it.

TOS was very much inspired by shows like Bonanza, action and character at the forefront. TNG was when Roddenberry got a little nutty with his vision.

The visions of the future in TOS and TNG actually don't match up particularly well.

522 I finished my long trek through Star Trek last week.

I had already seen all of TNG through syndication, so I started with DS9 a couple of years ago. Got through that, watched Voyager, TOS, Enterprise, and The Animated Series.

Best series is probably DS9.

Best single episode is in TNG (The Inner Light).

Best season is season 5 of Voyager.

Worst overall series is Enterprise (although it's not really bad, just very poorly conceived).

Posted by: TheJamesMadison at February 23, 2017 11:31 AM (vur0q)

DS9 was killer. Sisko didn't take any shit. There were really good character bonds.

Enterprise was doomed the minute you heard the gay singing over acoustic music. A linguistics chick who didn't want to be there. A captain who mulled over every fucking decision and then checked with his Vulcan handlers in the end anyway. Then you had a ship that wasn't quite armed enough to win, and not quite fast enough to escape. A security dude with daddy issues. Trip was the only normal one. The first warp 5 ship loaded NOT with type A personalities, but a bunch of dysfunctional rejects.

543 Mars has an atmosphere;
Thin. No magnetic field to sheer off radiation. Exposure without pressurized space suit time to death -- seconds.

Venus has an atmosphere; Runaway CO2. Punishing pressure. Exposure without pressurized space suit time to death -- split second.

Posted by: E Depluribus Unum at February 23, 2017 11:32 AM (ZFUt7)

Both could be made habitable, given the will to do it, and enough cheap energy.

Mars; pelt it with redirected icy comets, or chunks of ice filched from Saturn's rings. Get enough water on it, and the water vapor alone will thicken the atmosphere, and help warm it up. Clearly, Mars did have liquid water at one time.

Venus; maybe a metric fuckton of big-ass hydrogen bombs to blast most of its atmosphere off into space, or perhaps chemical reduction plants, floating on ballons, that use solar energy to dissociate CO2 into elemental carbon and oxygen?

=======================

If I had been in the writer's room at the beginning of Enterprise, I would have pitched it this way:

Instead of Vulcans holding humans back by not giving warp technology, they're sabotaging human progress because we're going too fast for them. We would have reached warp 7 by the start of the show, but Vulcans have been doing things to actively undermine the progress for decades (without human knowledge, of course). Vulcans are getting desperate to keep us from going too far, so they decide that they're going to fake an explosion in the new Warp 5 engine, but they get caught.

Humanity is outraged. Archer is outraged. So outraged that instead of insisting on not taking up Enterprise as his next command because he's really a test pilot at heart and wants to test the next Warp 6 engine, as a giant Fuck You, he pushed Enterprise out of space dock as early as possible and shoots off into space.

The show would then have a captain who realizes that he doesn't want to do what he's doing after a few episodes, but he can't back down from it, so he pursues his mission aggressively.

I'd also cut down on the alien contact. Space seems really crowded on that show.

The very fact that he is in serious contention is not good for them.

I believe the current media blitz attempting to smear Trump as an anti-semite is related to Ellison's strong showing in the DNC race. It's a calculated deflection from the fact that the Dems are seriously considering a known "anti-Zionist" (*wink*wink*) for the chairmanship.

There is no other explanation for this particular line of defamation against Trump. The charge is too ridiculous --- and yet they are running with it. WHY?

Trip was cool. The doctor was cool. Shran was cool. The set design - exposed pipes and conduits and wires like a contemporary ship - made it accessible and recognizable as a prototype ship, like something NASA might build in 80 years or something.

But you're right about the rest of the characters. The weapons officer was a complete whiny sad sack, the interpreter was more of a grad student than an officer, the Captain and the Vulcan minder were utterly forgettable, and the helmsman is either a horrible actor or was struggling to make a really awful script believable.

588 You can blame the Ridged or Rippled Klingons on Roddenberry actually getting a budget for the first movie. Then they had to do a lot of hand waving and mumbo-jumbo to explain it away.

589 And completing the trifecta of "Illinois is totally screwed" news today... members of the largest state employee union, AFSCME, have voted 81% in favor of authorizing a state employee strike. Of the 38,000 state workers represented by AFSCME around 30,000 are not legally forbidden from striking (i.e., they aren't prison guards, cops, etc.). The union may now call a strike at any time with 5 days notice. Stay tuned.....

590 I think Brannon Braga was the showrunner for Voyager, the guy who came up with "warp drive is destroying space!".Kind of a turnoff.
Posted by: steevy at February 23, 2017 11:49 AM (r/0kC)

yeah that warp 5 ban was theee most stupidest thing to ever infect star trek. Whoever came out with that should have had their ass removed. That was just more of the bullshit social messages that plagued TNG.

Didn't Christopher Lloyd play a Klingon?

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at February 23, 2017 12:01 PM (VeUrT)

595 I always thought Klingons were "black" although I never realized they were played by black actors.

Last night, on the original series, there was a white Klingon in a bit role.
Posted by: shibumi, a rational single white female and kitteh servant at February 23, 2017 11:57 AM (J5mC3)

Well they're not all played by black actors. Gowron was a white guy. Martok is a white guy. The guy that played Kang is Syrian born. Also Christopher Lloyd played a Klingon.

I've definitely looked into it, but it's not available on any streaming service. Ease is a factor.

I'll get to it, though. I'm tired from all the Star Trek.

I'm gonna read for a few months now.

603 599 Yeah,couldn't remember his name .

Posted by: steevy at February 23, 2017 12:06 PM (r/0kC)

604 Ansara - Day of the Dove?
Colicos think was Errand of Mercy
Campbell who played Trelaine also played the main Klingon in The Trouble With Tribbles I think

605 604 All correct,I think.

It was a wimp free zone. It ran 5 seasons and the entire series was pretty much written before it aired, so it stayed on target. It seriously fired on all cylinders. It was dark, it had its comedy, it had great characters.

Posted by: Berserker- Dragonheads Division at February 23, 2017 12:09 PM (aMlLZ)

607 "A security dude with daddy issues."

But you have to give him credit for the Reid Alerts. Lasted all the way through the other series.

And all three reprised their roles in DS9 with full Klingon makeup. Colicos had multiple recurring appearances afterwards.

I think you can see a lot of them on you tube.

610 Why did they not follow the Captain Pike storyline in the subsequent movies? Did that piss off the Trekkies?

613 Finally, a decent painting!

The large tree in the middle is probably a red oak. Those are possibly walnuts over there on the left. He has one tree coming out of the margin of a pond in a way I mistrust though. That just doesn't look right. I'll complain to the appropriate authorities.

A cabin would look good over there on the left. Cabins are always nice.

614 Though very late: for dirtiest tree name, I would go with butternut, although any hard wood will suffice.

615 Far right one on the right could be an elm.
