On this day in history. When men were men.

Today in history, we have men Snowflakes.

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive. Elbert Hubbard

Quote II

If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month. Theodore Roosevelt

Quote III

Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views. William F. Buckley, Jr.

Tuesday night we covered the fact that drinking is a No-No in outer space. If NASA wants to explore and/or inhabit 7 new planets they claim could support life. Lighten up on the Valu-Rite restrictions. Amirite?

Scientists may have come just one step closer to discovering another life-supporting planet in our universe.

NASA announced at a press conference Wednesday afternoon that the Spitzer Space Telescope has spotted the "first known system of seven Earth-sized planets around a single star. Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water."

Ham Radio operator and the Boston Marathon 2013. h/t Miria F via Twitter.

There will be a new awareness about being able to communicate when cell phones don’t work. I was lucky enough to be one who could communicate clearly, even with someone around the world, when tens of thousands of people couldn’t.

I was lucky enough to be in a position to help many who needed help. That’s why all of us ham radio operators volunteered to be in Boston along with the thousands of other Boston Marathon volunteers.

Believe me, we’ll be back.

Where is the Fake News Media now? Milo is crucified, George Takei not so much. h/t Phoenixgirl.

The Left and its hypocrisy.

Also check out The Dystopic who discusses three or four Alinsky tactics in his piece entitled The Media Strikes Back:
Did Milo defend pedophiles? No. Evidence exists that he did the exact opposite. He has exposed multiple pedophiles in the past, including the aforementioned Nyberg. Salon, one of the publications attacking Milo for this supposed behavior, has published many articles defending pedophilia, calling it a sexual orientation (something Milo has absolutely never done). People like Meryl Streep have given standing ovations to convicted pedophiles, like Roman Polanski. Do you really think any of this is based on principle? That the media has suddenly developed a conscience when it comes to molesting children?

They don’t care. They want Milo gone. And by extension, they want Trump gone.

Built like a brick shit house. Built like a shit shit house.

1973 saw the debut of Envirite (aka Glass-Dung, Manure Glass, or Pasture Glass), a promised-to-be revolutionary building material made out of glass and cow manure.

It actually seems like it was a pretty good idea. The concept was that you could take old glass bottles, combine them with cow manure, heat both together in a furnace, and the manure would act as a foaming agent fusing the glass together into a versatile building material. So you'd be repurposing two waste products (old glass and manure) into something useful.

Manly Man who doesn't know where he is at, stops and asks for directions.

This is not a hilarious story but was shown by the video below that spread through the social media.

According to the Kazakhstan Ministry of Defense the helicopter (carrying four rocket pods) was involved in a “planned visual orienteering exercise,” in which trainee pilots were told to determine their location “including by means of human survey.” According to the statement, cited by the local media, the exercise was a “success.”

Norway is picking the winners and losers of automobile sales.

Norway has been incentivizing the use of zero emission vehicles since the 1990s. These include exempting EVs from value added taxes (VAT), thus making conventional automobiles significantly more expensive in the country, low annual road tax, and no purchase and import taxes. EVs also park for free in city centers, get access to bus lanes, and don’t have to pay road tolls.

How do you create a Special Snowflake? Well, the first thing you do is to keep them inside school.

A mom in New York tells me she’s in a fight with her kid’s preschool. You might think she’s unhappy with the zero-tolerance policy for Kombucha? Too much enrichment? Not enough? In fact, it’s none of the above. Her fight is over the children playing outside. The mother wants her kid to be outside more often, while the preschool is of the opposite opinion. The director’s latest excuse is that it is “illegal” for the kids to be outside when the temperature is below 32 degrees.

Recess is a healthy part of childhood.

Dude makes John Wick like action film at home. Something tells me that this guy handled temps under 32 as a child growing up.

Immigrants who come to this country and wish to become citizens must pass a test. The Civics test, can you pass it?

Applicants must answer 6 out of 10 correctly to pass. The questions include:

What is the supreme law of the land?
What is freedom of religion?
What stops one branch of government from becoming too powerful?
The House of Representatives has how many voting members?

87 My Surabachi story. My dad, was an Army tanker in the Pacific, had lots of friends that were combat vets. Which was natural since so many men served during WW II. One friend served on a destroyer. I remember they would swap humorous but nothing about the fighting itself.

One day they were talking and Iwo Jima came up and out of the blue his friend said, "you know, I watched the flag being raised." This took dad completely by surprise because after 30+ years of friendship his friend never once mentioned he was at Iwo Jima. Apparently, the friend was on watch at the time and literally saw the flag rise.

95 A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a man below. He descended a bit more and shouted,

"Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man below replied, "You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You are between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude."

"You must be an engineer," said the balloonist.

"I am," replied the man, "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help so far."

The man below responded, "You must be a manager."

"I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know."

"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is, you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it's my fault."

That's possible. In that case then we will end up with no recess at all. Put a hundred kids on a school playground and there will be injuries.

My sister works as an aide in a public school in Michigan. School employees hate having to go outside with kids in the winter. The smart employees dress for the cold and move around a lot. The lazy employees stand still and gripe about how cold it is.

Those kids are very lucky to have your sister caring for them. Most teachers, sadly, seem to be like the ones who don't want to go outside. Recess is vital for learning-the kids need to burn off energy, and allow the lessons to actually sink into their brain, which takes place when they are doing something active, and actually put those things to use. Then they can go back to their desks, and learn something while they rest from the playing. It certainly helped with the ADHD kids back before they were drugged up.

Sorry, this is a huge soapbox for me. I don't mean to rant.

That is exactly how it works.

And the description of the Norway thing doesn't sound any different than the US for EVs. We subsidize manufacturers directly, we subsidize the purchase with tax incentives, allow them to go in toll lanes free....

And out West they want to move to tax by the mile to make up for the revenue lost.

153 So I read the sidebar article about the Philadelphia soda tax, which included Mayor Kenny's statement:

"I didn't think it was possible for the soda industry to be any greedier," Kenney said in an emailed statement. " ... They are so committed to stopping this tax from spreading to other cities, that they are not only passing the tax they should be paying onto their customer, they are actually willing to threaten working men and women's jobs rather than marginally reduce their seven figure bonuses."

The level of arrogance and economic ignorance in that statement is staggering.

He's outraged that the "soda industry" is passing the cost on to wholesale distributors, who pass it on to retailers, who pass it on to customers.

Somewhere Leftists have gotten the idea that "greed" means the desire to keep what you earn, and not the desire to take by force what others have earned.

Of course, the people who voted for Kenney agree with him wholeheartedly. And many of them pay for their soda with EBT cards, so they don't give a damn what it costs.

There really does need to be some kind of intelligence test for voting. Allowing idiots to have any kind of say over the lives of rational and productive people can only lead to ruin.

So I found out there was a sale on Walmart's website for Gotham Season Two in DVD or Bluray, $17 or so. I drove to a Walmart and there they were selling it for $30.

I showed the cashier the website, and they sold it to me for $17ish.

APPARENTLY that is allowed. So, don't let Walmart stores bend you over if their website offers a lower price.

Exact same job (different photos but same layout) cost me $20 the prior year, at the same store. Went back & forth with the clerk & she insisted that that's the only price they charge. Got the manager involved and then figured out that the prior year I had placed the order online, which is a cheaper rate. I politely pointed out that that's a BS policy since the job is exactly the same, printed on the same machine, with the same amount of labor (save inserting the thumb drive into the computer).

Finally, the manager relented and allowed me to re-submit the order online (I had my laptop with me) so I could get the lower price. Of course they just gave me the prints they had already made.

Ironically, the reason I had brought the job in in person was that the prior year they got the job wrong, twice, and thus had to print it 3 times. I felt sorry for them having to waste so much time and having to eat the costs of the reprints. I thought if I brought it in on the thumb drive and went over the job with them in person, it could save them money and save everyone some headache.

162 Speaking of recess, I went to a Catholic school where most of the teachers were nuns. One winter the principal had the older boys haul buckets of water outside to create a skating rink. We could spend noon recess ice skating. Other winters we played "King of the Mountain" on the snow hills created from plowing the parking lot. Yup, kids shoving each other off the snow mountains. It was pretty much survival of the fittest. They don't let kids play like that anymore.

163 josephistan, probably already answered, but both of Clint's Iwo movies are worth seeing.

Though both were great disappointing, to me.

"Flags" just couldn't possibly be as interesting and powerful as the book - and it wasn't. Pretty dumbed down and hollywoodized. One of those books - real history - that just didn't translate that well to the screen.

"Letters" was the last atrocity of the Pacific war. Not that bad, of course, just exaggerating, but lots of disappointing parts. Mostly that the brutality of the Japanese military culture was under-stated, and there were some ridiculous scenes.

When I ws a kid we used to love playing outside. We would be out sledding and having snowball fights all day. Then we'd come in as the sun set and sit around the fireplace to warm back up.

Nowadays, the places that we used to sled have banned it (great hill, it was). A kid can get a police record for throwing a snowball at someone. And fireplaces have been almost stamped out of existence.

My nephew wears shorts to school even in the dead of winter. He, being the smartest person who has ever lived, explained to me that it's warm enough in the school. I told him that he'd find himself stuck outside for 20 minutes one day and that would be the end of his fantasy about always being able to stay inside when he wanted.

No. Well, yes, but I'm using 1084 for the current project....I do have a tomahawk head made from 4140, but all I did was file the commercial casting to a slightly different shape and heat-treat it.

I'm trying to get a muzzleloading rifle barrel or two, and I'd prefer something better than the 12L14 screw-steel stock that is pretty standard these days. They don't seem to blow up, (literally tens of thousands out there and very few documented failures, mostly from one company that stopped making barrels back in the 80s, I think) despite the metallurgy that says they should, but I'd prefer something stronger just for my peace of mind. Problem is, the options are limited and there is virtually no real info out there...4140 barrels aren't available, 1137 barrels are (but the metallurgist I've been talking to just said 1137 isn't good, apparently reversing his opinion from what he's said earlier), and a couple custom barrel makers that either use 8620 or 86L20. Very, very frustrating situation.

Back in the early years of the 20th Century, insurgents in British India made gun barrels from the steering shafts of automobiles. Good tough steel. And they made smokeless powder from chipped-up celluloid movie film.

What about car axles for barrel blanks? They are made of tough forged steel, and can stand up to tremendous torque. I mean the inner axle shafts of a rear drive car or pickup.

The 86xx are low-alloy steels developed to conserve nickel & other alloys during WWII. They're tough, with good wear resistance. Bandsaw and circular saw blades often use them, particularly the higher xx versions. I've got a ulu I made from a circ saw blade.

The L version would be a little more machineable.

What kind of barrel profile are you going for?

The 86xx series low alloy steels were developed during WWII to conserve nickel and other alloying elements. Greco knives uses them. Overall, tough steel, good wear resistance, used in circular and bandsaws.

It depends, really. It depends on how elastic the demand for the product is. There are certainly many cases where the taxes are taking profit from the companies because the market just won't stand the increase in prices. Government can drive companies out of business, this way, and often do ... or at least drive away the ones that can afford to relocate.

Not true. e.g. a generic product made by two different companies that are taxed differently, the consumer will pay the same price but the owners of one company will pay the difference.

How is added cost to the consumer to feed fedzilla irrelevant?

Posted by: Willy J. at February 23, 2017 11:41 PM (W6Ch1)

326 All taxes are figured into the price of any product and paid by the consumer. The fact that products exist that have high profit margins does not change that fact.

Posted by: Willy J. at February 23, 2017 11:35 PM (W6Ch1)

What are you trying to argue? A company can make 5 million on sales of 1,000,000 units a year and then the government assesses a tax of 10 cents on every unit and the market will only bear an increase of 3 cents (for the same revenue - a local max, though a bit reduced volume). So the company has to eat the 7 cents of taxes. It comes out of the company's bottom line.

This ain't rocket science.

And look, if the company could have sold the same amount for 10 cents more each then it probably would have been selling them at that price, originally. Companies try to price their products for maximum returns, which means that there is little leeway. When a government creates a new tax that is a major disruption for the company that has priced its product at the outside of the envelope for maximum profit ... and a good deal of those new taxes are going to come out of the companies bottom line. The company is not always going to be able to just raise the price by the amount of the new tax and sell the same number of units. If it could have then it would have before the taxes.

329 Hi Anna.

No news or new script pages, but still waiting for feedback from Mike.

As I mentioned, he's a liberal. I did go ahead and unfollow (but not unfriend) him at FB a few weeks ago, because I was tired of reading some of his anti-Trump stuff.

Well since then, I haven't talked to him, and what's a little strange is that just tonight I messaged him to ask if he got my email containing the script pages. According to FB, he *saw* my message... but didn't respond.

Who knows. I don't address him personally or post stuff on his page, but I *do* like and comment on a lot of stuff from far more conservative friends at FB. If Mike wants to write me off and forget about me, fine; I could still write some more scripts, turn Make America Free Again into my own creation, and hopefully eventually show it to an agent, along with other scripts I've written.

At this stage, I'm rather happy just to finally be writing. For so long I've *called* myself a writer but haven't written. I finally decided to stop calling myself that, until I have a library I can actually show people. I just turned 50 and feel like the clock is really finally ticking. I need to get serious.

354 And I have evidently solved my ongoing problem with the Triumph TR6. Distributor cap apparently had a short to ground in the tower for #2 cylinder. Engine running, I could pull the wire for #2 plug out of the cap, and insert a screwdriver, grounded with a clip lead, into the tower, and see ZERO spark. No visible carbon tracks on cap, either. Weird. Substituted another Studebaker six cylinder cap, and it drove just fine last evening. Bought brand new one today; ten bucks and change.

You can still get Studebaker parts at O'Reillys. Triumph, not so much.
The distributor in this car is, it's safe to say, unique in all the world. Base is the original Lucas, with the tach drive gear. I machined off the upper body of it, and left a stepped flange. Upper body is from a cast-iron Autolite distributor from some Studebaker Champion engine. I chose that, because a) I had it, and b) it's also CCW rotation, like the original Lucas.

Instead of using the Autolite points and condenser, I installed the reluctor wheel and pickup from a '70's-vintage Dodge slant six distributor, also made by Autolite. The pickup drives a remotely-mounted GM HEI module, which in turn runs the orginal Lucas coil. The whole mess works, and puts out a lot of spark.

387 Milo could redeem himself and capitalise on his situation if he were to remould himself as a vociferous proponent of age-of-consent laws...

Given the alarming spectre of "gay" and "transgender" children we see being paraded before the press these days and the absolute silence of gay-rights activists on the matter of AoC, there's a need for this sort of advocacy. He could be the first and only prominent homosexual to address and denounce this poorly kept secret about the gay subculture...

Posted by: Zettai Ryoiki at February 24, 2017 12:00 AM (kP16F)

Well, he did state that, in his opinion, that age-of-consent laws were "about right", which is a defensible statement. No matter where you set the legal age of consent, there are going to be some precocious youngsters that willingly and knowingly want to have sex with older people, and also some people of "legal" age who are naive and/or foolish and who get shamelessly exploited by older predators. The trick is to set the legal age of consent such that the sum of both "tails" of the distribution is held to a minimum.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 24, 2017 12:07 AM (WDdjT)

388 The AoC laws are quite clear. He could start from there! (I might mention that gay-rights groups in Canada and the Netherlands are openly lobbying for repeal of AoC laws...)

Hadn't realized it was such an old emulsion......

Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine. Glory to Kekistan! No Longer Accepting Harem Applicants at February 23, 2017 11:45 PM (lutOX)

May I respectfully, dissent?

Tri-X was an ASA-400 film. At least it was when I used the hell out of it in the 1970s. Plus-X Pan was ASA 125, while Panatomic-X was a very slow ASA-50.

But none so slow as the original, Kodachrome ASA-25, color transparency film.

And my favorite photo enlarger for 35mm film, is still the Omega B-22 XL, with Dichroic Color Head.

Fit it with the insanely sharp Fujinon 50mm f/2.8 enlarging lens, and good things are in store.

live has slim margins. Added taxes no matter where they land in the
chain always hurt the consumer.

405 Ace was talking today about panic, anxiety and airports.

The cold war had a particular kind of stress for Europeans because they had no volition or control over the situation. Kind of the opposite of the airport. And now I think about the benefit of tedious unpleasant air travel giving you small tasks until you arrive.

Thank god that liberals are only passengers at the federal level ... or will be soon. But their psychological problems will be the country's issue for a long time to come.

Nobody loses, when Trump wins, except for the porcelain rice bowls in Washington. Liberals don't know that, and they might not learn ever learn it at this rate. They don't know that the middle class was on a path to extinction. They see that a lot of people went out and voted, and went to racism as their faithful explanation for everything.

I played the hot sauce video for one liberal on Facebook, and it's actually pretty useful. I should have follow up by asking if they can imagine Trump being so tone-deaf.

As I recall from the book (Flags), Joe Rosenthal, the photographer who snapped the famous photo (still one of the, if not *the*, most reproduced photo in history, I think), almost missed the shot.

The cameraman who took that film that one can see playing on other sites today (today the cameraman would be Combat Camera, I think, back then it had a different name) nudged Rosenthal, who was looking down at the landing beaches, and told him a good shot was coming up as he saw the Marines getting ready to raise the pole.

As I recall Rosenthal turned around just as it happened, and so the famous photo truly is a snap-shot, taken in haste. He almost missed it.

The colors were so bright as to force a sad man to smile.

I was, and still am, a human light-meter for Kodak ISO-200 Kodacolor print negative film. And I can compensate on the fly, for the contrastier Fuji 200 counterpart.

Same for Plus-X Pan, B&W at ASA-125.

Bit grainier than the Agfa counterpart, but with more exposure range in the bargain.

In medium format though, the Agfa was a Zone System shooter's best friend.

My experience though, with Ilford B&W stuff, was mixed, at best.

While Tucker Carlson still employs "funnel-tactics" in his on-air discussions, he lets the Leftists hang themselves by simply offering them enough rope.

Ask a Leftist to "please explain yourself" and you'll get the totalitarianism that you expected.

Fuji is still huge in the broadcast TV lens world. But for consumer grade cameras? Do not know.

500 Thanksgiving was the big breakthrough with him. He'd seen my kids with shashkas and kindzhals, and - because he's a man who gets ideas - the Colonel thought it would be fun to carve the Thanksgiving turkey with a shashka, so I brought mine for the occasion. Out in the back yard, he was sort of goofing with the thing when #1 daughter came out to show him how to hold it and how to 'flankirovat' (manipulate) it. He was like a kid in a cnady store, and it wasn't long before my kids were teaching him lezginka, etc. Needless to say, for Christmas, he got his own blades, as my angel reported he'd been 'practicing' with a stick from a tree. He even got a papashka from her for Christmas. The man was and is fascinated by the culture, and has expressed his admiration for the fac that I have taught my children how to fight. having four daughters, he understands why a man would do such a thing.

Tough as nails, that man, and I'm proud to have earned his respect and the love of his daughter.

524 Palp, the "sourcing" is the least of his problems.

Note - "Democrats outraged".

Thirty years ago, depending on the Democrats involved, that might have had some credibility, or been of some interest. Today? We're talking North Korean Defense Ministry-level of credibility.

And hmmm, lessee. What might the topic be? Oh, right. Bizarre, apparently untrue allegations that Trump campaign officials had contacts with "senior Russian intel officials" - oh, this being based on felonious revelations of classified intercepts of "US persons" (if such contacts occurred, which is implausible).

So - pressing for a statement from the FBI (if that occurred), in that context, would hardly be outrageous, nor obviously would it have any impact on any actual investigation.

The "news cycle" can be about anything the cretinous Dems and their press mouthpieces want it to be, so long as the action is getting done.

And on that front, things look pretty good, with the huge and critical exception of putting down the judicial coup. Would be thrilled to be wrong, but feels/sounds like that coup will be accepted by the admin., which is a disastrous large additional ratchet turn towards lawlessness.

I think that Milo would agree with that, based on his rather long Facebook post of a couple of days ago. I think he also said that the homosexual community at large disagreed with AOC laws, putting them at odds with the rest of us.

And if you had actually watched his press conference towards the end he talked about Germany's Age of Consent law which is 14, and he said that was too low. So that likely really does put him at odds with a lot of the LGBT agenda pushers.

Hmmm. Well, first of all: I'm a chick.

Second: You don't come of age during the hostage crisis, seeing people selling t-shirts that say "Fuck Iran!" without understanding the divide between your native land and your father's.

Third: I know a sliver of a side of my friend's neice's troubles. There's your "veracity", Uncke P, for what it's worth. I've been banging on to her for the past year that it might come down to this -- because, The Way of Things.

I wasn't complaining about it. I wasn't asking for, or whining to get, special privilege for this young woman. I'm sorry now that I brought it up.

But I did. I saw someone dear to me in despair, and, anxious to be of any help, came running to the first place I thought of, where so many know so much.

Uncle P pretty much confirmed the path I'd told her to take last year. I was relieved and grateful for his words. Still am.

Was I wrong to ask for help about this? Wrong to admit to a heritage? I'm used to being trolled in my profession about being an (R). I've never gotten used to being trolled because of who my dad was.

Title IX specifically allows for gender segregation with regards to bathroom facilities. So this nonsense about not allowing mentally disturbed children to use the bathrooms of their choice violating title IX is bullshit.

557 Just read that DeVos strongly opposes allowing the states to decide the tranny bathroom issue. Concerns about bullying etc... She has directed the DOE Civil Rights Office to get involved and stay vigilant for cases of bullying and harassment.

WTF? First, she should be looking for ways to get rid of the DOE Civil Rights Office since there are about 20 others spread through the fed. govt. Instead she is going to use this agency, undoubtedly filled with SJWs, to harass local schools using the pretext of bullying. Sounds like something a lib would be doing.
