A Post That is Both Genuine & Credible (MJ)

A few years ago I attended a two week training class for executive development that centered on statistics and also the softer skills that are necessary to be successful in a global corporate world. Most of the sessions were related to math, stats and running big ass, soon to be over budget projects, but in addition, the Director of the American Shakespeare company in Prague flew in to help the group loosen up a little--like regular people. You'd be surprised at what tight ass phonies most executards are. Oh wait, no you wouldn't. It's every bit as bad as you can imagine.

So imagine a group of execudorks doing acting exercises in an attempt to be more relatable--silently laying on the floor with your eyes closed to just...be, taking giant deep breaths and sighing to release the tension, having the group tear apart your presentation and rate your body language as you fidget or squirm, standing across from a partner and looking them in the eyes while you compliment them on...something.

At one point the group had to list out a bunch of great actors coupled with their less accomplished brethren to flush out a core lesson. Jack Nicholson--great actor. Elizabeth Berkley--not so much. It was really trippy and weird and many of the execugeeks couldn't break character--or they really are boring, soulless automatons. You decide which is true.

It took a few weeks to settle in but the lesson of the good/bad actor finally settled in. The instructor, Guy, went on to talk about what makes actors great--they are both genuine and credible. Jake Gyllenhall might be a pretty good actor but there is no way on this godly earth he could pull off Colonel Jessup. It takes a Jack Nicholson to do that.

So I started applying this very simple lifehack to politics and used it to figure out who would win each little skirmish occupying endless loops on cable. It's not always right but in personal contests it's a good indicator of who will come out on top.

Would Obama beat Romney? Yep, he sure would because Romney simply wasn't genuine while Obama was both genuine and credible as President. Would Assad fire off a few gas bombs in an effort to win his civil war? Yep' he was gonna because Obama isn't credible as a guy who draws red lines and it was obvious that he didn't give a rat's ass about Syria. ESPN, baby. The second replay of SportsCenter isn't going to watch itself.

To test the theory I put together this chart to see if each President since Ike possessed both qualities going in. Surprisingly, there were/are Presidents that don't have both qualities.

GC1.jpeg

So how did they win? How is it possible that they could become President without being both genuine and credible? Simple: when compared to their opponents, they were both more genuine and credible or the one trait they could claim as their own outweighed the one they lost.

GC2.jpeg

You could quibble with a few of the assumptions but there are some that simply aren't debatable.

1. Eisenhower. Supreme Allied Commander. 'Nuff said.

2. Johnson could have beaten almost anyone in 64. Living embodiment of a recently assassinated President.

3. Reagan was the real deal.

4. Bush represented the continued Presidency of Reagan' who was truly transformative.

Was Trump more credible than Clinton? I'm not really sure about that. He was certainly more genuine but there was an impression that she could be President, it just wasn't worth it to put someone so disingenuous in the Oval Office. America chose to roll the dice. Trump wins.

Was Gore more credible than Bush? I'd say they were about even, but Bush was so much more genuine that it didn't matter. Close ass election.

You get the point. It's a fun thought experiment based on what I'm convinced are the only two characteristics that matter. If you're honest with yourself about who is more genuine or credible, you'll be able to bypass the bullshit polls, the daily horserace, and just enjoy the pure spectacle of an election or political fight. And besides, you've only seen the rerun of That 70's Show where Eric pulls down Donna's pants during a basketball game three times. It won't watch itself.

But Obama was neither genuine nor credible, except to people who can listen to NPR without laughing or shaking their head (i.e., ignoramuses). He looks like me, you've still never heard his name, much less see him as prez.

It's the electorate that's the problem, mostly, the focus on candidates lacks any persuasiveness when you compare the often ridiculous outcomes in different campaigns.

Posted by: Muldoon at February 22, 2017 08:36 PM (wPiJc)

30 Its an interesting analysis, but the last two two new presidents had another factor: change.

The American people are fully sick of the government status quo and the system as is. They're tired of being jerked around, ignored, and having things taken away from them more and more. Its not the kind of thing that makes you go berserk, its the kind that makes you grit your teeth and go "again? Seriously?" So that when you get a chance to really change things up and do things differently, you pull the trigger.

Obama represented change and a new try at things. McCain represented more of the same.

Trump represented change and a new try at things. Clinton represented not just more Obama, but more of the past we're sick of.

31 As one of those Execudorks that became very high ranking pretty recently, let it be known that I used my powers to wax about 75% of the HR "make me feel all good about myself" shindigs we used to have.

We now only will Annual Department meetings, quarterly Sales meetings, anything Federally mandated and training meetings. It had gotten so bad that we were in some meeting over half the time.

I have been here since becoming a lowly Sales guy in the late 80s. With the reaction from HR, I had better get security to check out my car before I start it.

113 I'll take over application of learned models for $500, Alex.

Just about everything fits in the 80-20 rule. Meaning that 20% is outliers.

Clinton v Bush is one of the 20 I think. Clinton could fake sincerity like crazy. But WWII pilot CIA head former VP 90% popularity after a smashing victory in Desert Storm guy wasn't credible?

Yeah no.

Someone referred to change, and Clintons election certainly hinged on that. And I note there is no comparo on Clinton and Dole.

Not to poopoo the whole thing. An interesting analysis but not necessarily a useful one. I mean, Seth Rogen is both genuine and credible as a stoner, that doesn't make him a good actor.

Posted by: rickl at February 22, 2017 09:05 PM (sdi6R)

121 I get the impression that we can't rule out how the mainstream media does its utmost to shape each candidate's image. They made Obama look genuine and credible by virtue of hiding things that the public, if they knew, would not trust about the guy. On the other hand, McCain acted like he just didn't want to win (the media ended up going full character-assassination on Sarah Palin when it turned out she did), and Romney acted wooden and unrelatable all by himself. I'm curious to see how to look at that metric. I think some nominees' apparent genuineness and credibility are affected more than others by the media's influence.

We could also apply it to the primaries. Take this year's primary: Trump have everyone beat on either metric, as he needed to beat them. Some candidates who were more genuine (e.g. Ben Carson) he beat by being more credible (i.e. sounding more like he knows what he's doing than Ben Carson did); others who were more credible (e.g. Ted Cruz) he beat by being more genuine (really, more genuine than all the career politicians). Wonder if other primaries could be compared that way too.

?????

And I'm not that interested in the "fighting" part - though it is highly entertaining, if a bit scary when one sees how shallow, stupid, or alien so many Trump critics are - I'm only really interested in the results part. If he achieves important goals with nothing but rainbows and sprinkles and cute puppy dogs, fine. Or whatever.

And, all of 4 weeks in, we actually have results to talk about, already.

Just pick any of several specific things that have been done. Take the roll-back, through an existing but unused process involving congressional votes, of pernicious regulations on coal mining.

In both process and substance, this comparatively small thing towers above almost anything that's been done (domestically) in ...... years and years and years. This alone should be the subject of much rejoicing. Instead? What you are seeing.

Credible (able to be believed; convincing).

I did my own share of corporate team building and HR touchy-feely exercises in the day, and I'm sorry, but this just isn't working for me at all.

We all know that there were two main reasons for Obama's 2008 win: 1) America was ready for a real change and exhausted with the GOPe and Clinton acts and 2) the black guy seemed like a nice guy and it could be a wonderful racial healing moment. It turned out that he wasn't the change we'd been waiting for and was anything but a racial healer, but the GOPe pushed yet another establishment guy with their rope in 2012.

More genuine that Romney? Probably. More credible than Romney? After four years? NFW.

For far too many, have their political views enmeshed with their personality to the point where they can't separate the two.

Further, I think the 'professional' right is in love with some kind of statesman-like ideal of a hero. If that form of hero isn't at the head of the parade, they screech like scorned banshees.

It's just too much for some that the Right doesn't have the perfect Hercules in a short tunic flashing those conservative calves on command.

Great observation. I was not enthusiastic about the NOTION of DJT as president, but I am loving the REALITY of President Trump. the thing is, he talks like a businessman, not a politician. But he also works like a businessman. It's results that count. And DJT is getting results. But there are areas where he has to play the long game, and so far I think he is doing that right as well. We just have to be patient.

306 For far too many, have their political views enmeshed with their personality to the point where they can't separate the two.

320 I think there's an old joke that goes: Nothing is more important than sincerity. Once you learn to fake that, you're all set.

Enough people saw Clinton fake it (and everything) that allowed Trump to be elected. I don't think Trump faked much if anything and what he said was only radical, or not credible, by the lights of the MSM and libtards. But I repeat myself.

Anyone who has been successful in sales or in making persuasive presentations will recognize the value of 'genuine' and 'credible' and the other acting exercises MJ mentioned.

Experiences vary, I guess. My exposure to the professional and corporate world has shown me that, in general, sucking up to the right people goes further than doing your job well or being loyal to the business.

324 @298 Interesting. Loyalty and longevity aren't valued much anymore. Now it's mostly about kissing the right ass.
-------------------

Usually depends on various factors. A lot of times, the people who start up a company value it more than the people they eventually put in charge.

The company I was working for a couple of years ago brought on a new head to lead the company at the end of 2014. By the end of 2016, they'd had two huge layoffs. And nearly everyone who was working there two years ago is gone. The first layoff (which was nearly half the company) had a pretty good financial reason (lost contract) at the time. But so far as I can tell the second one was pretty much sweeping out the old employees to bring in replacements. Makes me wonder if the first layoff really was only because of the lost contract, or whether the new head was just looking for an excuse to dump everyone.

327 >>You get the point. It's a fun thought experiment based on what I'm convinced are the only two characteristics that matter.

It is, but it's woefully incomplete. As a global executard myself who learned by doing it, it is far more complicated than just who is or who isn't genuine and credible.

When it comes to Presidential elections, look at our media. Look at the environment. Look at incumbency. Look at the friggin electorate.

Just a few of the factors that have an enormous effect on elections in addition to who appears genuine and credible, neither of which a significant portion of the country think the candidate on the other side often if ever is.

I don't know a single person on the right who thought that Obama was genuine or credible in either of his races. Yet he started both races with a majority of electoral votes as all recent Democrat presidential candidates do. And unless you were skeptical and hunted for news beyond the mainstream you thought he was a) brilliant b) accomplished beyond politics and c) ever successful. He was and is none of these things.

Incumbency is widely regarded as being worth 3-5 points. Obama had the media in his pocket in a way no modern candidate ever has, not Bubba and definitely not Hillary. And the electorate, which in relatively good times is pretty much status quo, is fucking pissed and polarized like never in my lifetime.

I don't see Trump as all that genuine or credible. I see him as a chameleon who more than anything wants to win bigly. Anyone who has seen him through the years knows that the positions he holds now are not the positions he held just a couple years ago and likely not the ones he will hold in a couple years. But once he does adopt a position, in the short run he fights like hell to win at all costs.

That's why I voted for him.

336 Genuine and/or credible. Hmmmm...

Back in the early 70s, I would have seriously considered voting for Pat Schroeder had I lived in her district. Although she was very, very left I was convinced that she had arrived at her convictions honestly.

To me, that's the nub of it: do you believe that this person is open to argument?

(Regarding Pat Schroeder, by the end of her 2nd term she had surrendered her brain to Teddy Kennedy. When she ceased thinking for herself it ended any further favorable consideration of her.)
