Study: Millennials the most narcissistic generation ever.

The real division in America is between those on the inside and those on the outside.

Reynolds: The panic among the nation's credentialed elite is due to the realization that the rest of the country has figured out they're not elite.

Night!

9 Millennials is just another way of saying people younger than you that are stupid and should be shot in the fucking face.

That was the Oxford Dictionary reading anyway.

Posted by: John Nada at February 21, 2017 06:44 PM (W9dvU)

10 As an older millennial let me suggest that, while yes there is some narcissism, there's a lot of desperation. My generation grew up during the eighties and nineties, especially the late 90s/early 00 tech boom. Our parents mortgaged themselves to the hilt to pay for nice houses, vacations, push us into college, etc. And they told us the whole time that if we did X,Y,Z then we'd be successful.

Combine that with the human nature to compare yourself to those around you, and the explosion of social media which means that you're not only comparing yourself to the Joneses across the street, but everyone on instagram, facebook, etc., and you get trapped into pretending that you're wildly successful and happy and cultured because everyone else is pretending the same thing.

11 We MUST take EVERY opportunity to use the word "millennial" BECAUSE IT IS THE COOLEST WORD EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (It's just another buzz word to be used to divide people and pit them against each other - this time by generational classification. Individuality is a disgusting thing THAT IS NOT TO BE TOLERATED in this country.)

14 I see the elites are forming up to object to Trump's use of Gitmo to house American terrorist detainees.

Another instance of Ace's observation about the elites considering it low-class and grubby to worry about the cost of things.

I mean, how much have we spent on facilities at Gitmo to make it a suitable detention facility meeting the standards of the Red Cross, the ACLU, the terrorist lawyers' bar, and so forth?

Are we not allowed to make use of it, now that we have paid so much for it?

IIRC, wasn't there a soccer field put in for the prisoners at Gitmo that cost something like $2 million?

26 Willowed:

I'm in agreement that Trump's delivery is an asset.

The professional Republican politicians that spend hours agonizing over every word in order not to deliver a soundbite that can be used against them fail. They are playing the left's game, and are censoring themselves in response to the faux outrage machine.

Trump won't play their game, and delivers direct, nearly unfiltered comments. The media howls in outrage, BUT, they then quote, verbatim what Trump said in order to roll their eyes at how unsophisticated he is.

But note, they are delivering Trump's message with minimal editing, because they think it is laughable.

The rest of the country hears what Trump said, and understand what he meant. The country didn't elect a politician. We don't expect a politician.

38 What Obama was doing was filibustering.

He had to hold occasional pressers, for the sake of appearances, but didn't want to actually have to answer a bunch of questions, so he would take just a handful of them from friendly journalistas, and then rhetorically meander off during each one.

From Torquewrench last thread, but didn't want to lose it

Great point and very true. President Obama wouldn't really answer questions and didn't want to have to be bothered. He just would kill time and lecture, then leave.

Not to mention the total immersion in Leftist philosophy in the school system.

Starting in kindergarten, where the kids whose parents bought them school supplies have them taken away and put in a communal pile to be doled out to the kids with shitty parents.

No fractures, but there is a lesion or tumor on my spinal cord. The doc has no idea what it is or how it got there. That's kind of unsettling when he's supposed to be the best spinal/brain surgeon in Virginia.

I have another MRI in three months. If the thing grows, I get to have spinal surgery to remove/biopsy it. Two more weeks of the neck brace, and then back to living the dream!

I've just observed a very strange phenomenon this afternoon, and I'm hoping some of ya'll can help me out, 'splain it to me, Lucy.

The roof on the folks house needed a little patching. I decided to use my leather nail bag/apron thing I had, which is good for holding nails and has loops for one's hammers and shit.

I hadn't worn that thing in years, probably over 15 and putting it on, I noticed the strange thing. It had shrunk somehow, and the damn thing wouldn't fit around my waist. I had to let it out, and I'm not going to tell you how many holes I had to let it out by.

It's strange how that webbing just shrank so much, and I'm wondering what matter of process does that.

Close, But it's between those in The Borg and those who aren't. The Borg -- the unholy alliance of BigGov/ Deep State, MSM and Academia, which is melding. Some BigBiz industries are already a part of the this, and are increasingly aligning with the Cultural Left. Many media outlets are owned companies already part of The Borg. They can't seem to get it through their fat heads that Trump is not a politician so it's useless to cover him like one, i.e pick apart his every sentence like he's an English professor at an academic conference. He's a salesman, for pity's sake, can't they see that? Salesman are mostly bluster and exaggeration and, at the least, very inexact in their speech. So they made fools out of themselves chasing their tails over his "something happened in Sweden last night" remark, chasing down a terrorist act that Trump never claimed happened.

85 As much as I have come to dislike Tom Brokow (and his commentary), I nonetheless appreciated the details of 'The Greatest Generation'.

An excerpt:

"...he remembers his mother telling him the story of the day Gordon Larsen came into the post office where she worked. Larsen was typically a cheerful and popular member of their community, but that day he had stopped in to complain about the rowdiness of the teenagers the night before, which had been Halloween. Brokaw’s mother was surprised at his tone and asked him good-naturedly, “Oh Gordon, what were you doing when you were seventeen?” Gordon looked at her squarely in the eye and said, “I was landing at Guadalcanal.”"

The "greatest generation", said the consultant, wanted stability and continuity and job security above all else. The yuppie boomers wanted paths of personal advancement. Generation X wanted flexibility, plentiful time off, and casual dress standards.

The millennials? They want all of those things, combined, simultaneously, contradictions be damned. Plus they'd like to receive huge compensation packages and to be CEO of the firm within a year of being recruited.

It's a snarky nickname for Sean King, white guy and self-styled Black Lives Matter activist.

Malcolm X, nee Malcolm Little, was a early leader in the Nation of Islam movement of the sixties/seventies that advocated for black separatism and some degree of reprisals against the US government and white establishment.

Some histories suggest that Malcolm X backed off from the extremist positions of the Nation of Islam's black supremacist ideology and was assassinated as a result.

Talcum powder is a form clay mineral powder used for personal hygiene and was often included in some 'baby powder' products. The commercial product has a stark white color.

And yes, take the quiz. It's a hoot. And a little scary, to think that there are people in the world that actually think that way.

Thanks. She got sick suddenly Sunday morning, and I knew she was dying. I prayed she would die at home. Husband went to church, and I sat by her side and our other kitty lay next to her. I couldn't take her suffering, so as soon as husband came from church, we took her to the 24-hour pet ER. I held her as she was put to sleep. When they brought her to me, she looked up and started chattering the way she did when she wanted to go home from the vet. Husband, son and I kissed her head and said goodby and she went to sleep. She's buried in the back yard under a crape myrtle.

I grew up on the TX/LA border area. We would drive over and pick up alcohol for the weekends. I think they changed the open container law the same year they finally raised the drinking age. Until then, so long as the driver wasn't imbibing, everyone else in the car could. Made for some fun road trips.

Grew up in Vegas. Since both parents were alcoholics, I didn't drink -- but all my friends did. They'd go sit in casinos, play nickel slots, and get free booze from the cocktail waitresses.

I learned to count cards and started playing blackjack at 17 (legal gambling and drinking age in NV then was 21). Never got carded when I was losing, but as soon as I'd start winning ... out-the-door I was tossed.

You may not be able to get that foot on the ladder in the manner in which you were told you could, but that doesn't mean you cant get on the ladder, or that your journey up the ladder will be as easy or as fast as you were promised. In short, you're not faced with anything someone else before you hasn't overcome.

275 Hmm, BFD I don't think we agree on what Fenelon is describing with people who don't always ask how things are with you. There's more to it.

I've known any number of people who didn't "pry" into the details of your health and family -- often, I think, people who'd seen enough of hopeless health and family situations that talking about it would not help. Kind of a foreign concept, now.

Those were the same people who, if they found out your ass was in a sling, would be at your place the next morning with the truck, the tractor, the toolbox, whatever was called for, just do what you needed to keep going, give you a nod and leave. It's another kind of prayer chain altogether.

I'm not a perfect judge of people's situations, but in the cases where I've helped like that instead of talking and hugging, the effect has been good.

The last two weeks Spanky was "suddenly" diabetic one day, and hypoglycemic the next. We were back and forth to the vet, and they said her vitals were good.

And then Sunday she was having trouble walking, and was drooling, and let out cries like a person. She crawled up next to a plant in the living room, and I sat next to her, and the other kitty curled up next to her. I tried to comfort her, and could tell she wasn't comfortable. Called the Pet ER (and thankfully, a tech on duty is the daughter of dear friends who is a good friend of our son), gave me her cellphone number and said to bring her in when I was ready. As soon as my husband came home from church, we left, and son met us at the ER. They took her to the back to give her oxygen while we waited on a "euthanasia room." That was the worst part. She was alone for an hour, and I was beside myself.

I will always miss her. I called her my "angel on earth in a little cat suit." My mother loved her, and I'd like to think she and my dad welcomed her and are giving her chin scratches.

Ah.
I guess I've assumed that my kids would learn responsible drinking by example..since a half glass a few times a year is as far as it goes around here, which was also my experience, growing up.
My parents never said a word to me about alcohol, but it just never appealed to me, anyway.

Bureaucrats. Can't live with 'em, can't shoot 'em.

My driver's license had "Under 21" emblazoned on it until I was 23, when I lost it.

The first time I ever went to a place where they checked ID's at the door (I was 22), the bouncer did a double-take and asked why I hadn't gotten an updated one.
"I've never been anywhere it got checked before: it didn't seem worth the trouble." I shrugged.

He just about fell over. The fact that I had no tattoos, nothing pierced except my ears, and my skirt came alllll the way to just above the knee should have been a clue that I wasn't the type to rush for a new licence the day of my 21st birthday.

402 This video looks to me like a parody video from The Onion but it's real. Keith Olbermann is so serious here... Trump just made a mistake, a fatal mistake that now has inevitably doomed his Presidency. That mistake was: a Tweet that the press are the enemies of the people. It's all over, folks; Trump can never walk this one back.

Because Lenin once said something very similar, and all the voters know about this, and words are super important, and the parallels to Lenin are damning, and every Republican leader will be forced to publicly repudiate these words. Oh, and with this Tweet, Trump has shown that he has betrayed his oath to uphold the Constitution because First Amendment.

His closing words: "Resist." *raises hand with open palm* "Peace."

I laughed out loud about a dozen times during this video.

However there is one that I have tried watching and I don't know why I can't stand them. They're called Pretty Good Gaming. You can see a video by them here:

https://youtu.be/qTCKCU7P0EM

Can someone figure out why I can't stand them, or if you get the same dislike I do? Its not that they're brits, I watch plenty of other Brit youtube game channels and they're fine. And its not even that they are complaining, (and they complain a lot), because that happens in a lot of game channels I watch and that's fine.

Is it maybe that they are taking themselves way too seriously?

431 Here is something I have been thinking about.

The elites feel they are elite for a very good reason. They spent a lot of time and hard work. A lot of money, getting a degree from an elite college. And before that getting good grades in high school, and good SAT scores.

In a former age, they WOULD be elite. That is, not many people could afford college, or even to have read very much. Now most people read, go to college, and with the internet, all that skill and knowledge, and degrees from fancy colleges, has been devalued.

And they don't like it. Not one bit. They were promised that if they got a BA Degree in journalism from Columbia, five years, and $250k, they would be part of the elite. The decision makers. The top dogs. They would have their opinions respected. they would be admired and listened to, just like dear old Uncle Walt. They sense that something is seriously wrong here.

And they are pissed about it. Just like the blue collar person, who lost his job to china, or a robot. But they are not smart enough to realize, it isn't us, the unwashed masses, that they should be pissed at. They are pissed at the same forces of globalization, or change, of technology, that everyone is pissed about.

In their anger they lash out. With more and more venom. "I spent my entire life training, and a quarter mill$ for this? To have this buffoon Trump make fun of me on national TV? To have people challenge me, dismiss me, ignore me?!" They are trying to re-assert the elitism they were promised their entire lives. But it is just...not....gonna....happen. That era is over.

That is the fight we are having, between those promised a seat in first class for a transatlantic flight and the rest of us.

440 Bigby, I have a trick for curing morning sickness: I didn't throw up once with my last pregnancy, and I'm usually sick as a dog. (with a girl pregnancy, and this last was a girl.)

1/2 tsp (fresh!!) baking soda stirred into 8 oz water, drunk immediately upon waking. If she can keep it down long enough for it to work, it'll work.
It also helps to take a brisk walk ASAP, to get the blood flowing to areas other than the stomach.

480 According to my copy of The Fourth Turning, the generation that fought WWI would have largely been the "Lost" generation, the one before the one they call the "G.I." generation which was later labeled the "Greatest." The very first couple of years of the G.I. generation would have seen action in WWI as well.

The Losts line up with the "Thirteeners" who got re-named to Generation X, the generation preceding the Millennials.

I remember growing up in the late 60's / early 70's and the saying was "The Wet Head Is Dead." Think it was a commercial for some men's hair spray called "The Dry Look" or something.

Wonder if anybody ever defined the point at which the wet look died, or patient zero of the dry look ...

GI 1901-1924
Silent 1925-1942
Boomer 1943-60
Gen-X 1961-1981
Millenial 1982-2004
Homeland 2005-

I don't think the actual Fourth Turning happened in 2005, however. I suspect it's either happening now or will happen in the next 4-8 years, and instead of the Homeland Generation we'll have the Trump Generation (the Yuge Generation?).
Posted by: filbert at February 21, 2017 09:06 PM (s5o+q)

The Fourth Turning or "Crisis" began sometime in the 2000s and we're definitely in the middle of it now. 9/11/01 was probably too early in the timeline. That can be seen as part of the "Unraveling". I think the stock market crash and Obama's election in 2008 are a better fit for a starting point.

I don't get it. Most of the reason to get a buzz cut is so that you don't have to even think about your hair.
Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at February 21, 2017 08:52

Around here in the 60s a buzz cut was different than a crew cut.

Learned than before my aunt's wedding in 1965 and brother and wanted crew cuts, previously mentioned uncle-to-be-had one, another uncle.

Dad took us in and we got buzz cuts, just head shaved. We were mortified to be in the wedding that way.

When I went in the Navy in 68 there were plenty of WW2 vets still left, crusty old bastards we called 'lifers'. We were ignorant hillbillys who did not realize we were in the company of the lifeblood of the Navy. Little did I know I would be a lifer too, but that was later. Sorry to hear.

I never recommend political discussions with family. But if you find yourself in the middle of one, look up the Socratic method of winning a debate.

In short, just ask uncomfortable questions and smile.

EG
"Is there any unique set of ideals and ideas in the founding of the US?"

"Is the concept of Free Speech a universal ideal?"

"If America is a bad country, why would you want to encourage people to emigrate here?"

"How would a recent immigrant learn to love the US if the US is the source for all racism, sexism, homophobia, and hatred?"

"There are 10,000 of your ancestors from your father to the earliest inhabitant of Africa; are you wiser than all of them? Which one was wiser than you?"

Is it true? Not sure but it sounds like excusemaking to me. Jeffrey Wells also talks at length about how Polanski's victim forgave him a long time ago, which also seems a bit of a strange argument to make re why he should be "let go" per se.

My dad retired about a decade ago after maybe 30 years and now has an enormous beard and hair down past his shoulderblades. I bailed around the same time and have had the same daily shave and #2 clipper cut tapered up that I had when I was in. Mostly because I'm way to lazy to deal with that much hair, and also I'm balding on top. If you have a beard and long hair in a ponytail and you're balding on top, you look like a guy with a beard and long hair in a ponytail who's balding on top. That's not something I'm ready for. 716 This isn't my "let's all criticize Milo" moment.

But Milo is in denial over a few things. He *was* a victim when grown adults had sexual encounters with him when he was in his early teens. The fact that he's convinced himself that he wasn't a victim doesn't mean he's allowed to espouse a "let them be predators" attitude towards the interactions of early-teen homosexual males. That's how his message is coming across, even if in his own (victimized as a teen) mind he sees it otherwise.

Because I think genuine belief makes many people even happier-full of love, joy, peace patience, kindness, gentleness an self control. I'm not using myself as an example (because I spend too much time on politics boards which tends to decrease my happiness somewhat and I'm under various physical challenges at the moment) although I am happier with faith than i ever was without it, but I will use bluebell and grammar winger as examples. These kids constitute a generation for whom the promise of upward mobility is a lost dream. How many parents are supporting their millennial children with housing or income because even with solid degrees in engineering and such they are unable to find a footing in the prevailing economy? I don't know the actual numbers, but my anecdotal observation is it's a bunch. Will these kids ever be able to marry and raise families? For most, it's not in their near future--if ever.
