Attempt to Bully Wegman's Grocery Chain Into Dropping Trump Wine from Racks Backfires: Wine Sells Out, and Wegman's Stands Up to Bullies

Corporations always seem to think these pressure-groups are powerful dragons.

They're not. They're shadow-puppets on the wall, made by small, weak hands.

The most important political idea that no one's exploring is forming a 501(c)(3) which would have three missions:

1. To spread the idea that tolerance for ideas you don't like is itself brave and virtuous and absolutely fundamental to a free and functioning republic;

2. To criticize and condemn the social justice bullies who wish to bully people into shutting up or ostracizing others; and

3. To stick up for and praise people, institutions, and business that stand up for the right of citizens and businesses alike to go about their daily lives without being bullied every five seconds.

When the bullies go after institutions and companies, there's usually no one on the side arguing "A person shouldn't be fired just because he has political views some pressure group doesn't like" or "A company's first business is just serving its clientele's commercial needs, not pandering to the manifold needs of cultural and political affirmation."

It's not that there are so many people who are zealous bullies. There's a number of them, but this number is not overwhelming.

It's just that there is no damn organized resistance to them.

If ten weaklings show up to pick a fight and there's no one else there to fight back against them, then the ten weaklings win the fight.

You can't beat something with nothing.

This 501(c)(3) would have to be bipartisan and defend left-wingers whose scalps are hunted by right-wing mobs as well as those harassed by the left-wing mobs. However, this is no terrible thing because:

1. People with truth on their side should have no need of coercing people into accepting it, and

2. Rightwingers just don't do this as much as leftwingers, which is probably because

3. This almost never works for the rightwing scalp-hunters anyway, because the entire leftwing media rises up to defend the targets of rightwing scalp-hunters.

So we're giving away nothing at all, even for those people who like the idea of hunting leftwing scalps. You never win in your scalp-hunts; wouldn't it at least be nice to have an organization providing a defense against scalp-hunters, as leftwings do from their friends (and lovers) in the media?

By the way, this always comes up, so let me say it again: Yes, of course private businesses have the right to fire whoever they like, and people can boycott any business they like, and etc.

These are rights. People can do these things.

But in these censorious times, wouldn't it be nice to have an advocacy group dedicated to making the moral/socio-political case that people shouldn't inflict major economic damage on people over political tiffs?

And wouldn't it be nice to have a single advocacy group dedicated to pushing back against the many, many left-wing pressure groups who spend all their time hunting right-wing heretics?

Do you want the left to be the only player in the market for branding what is Forbidden and what is Mandatory? Personally, I'd like to see some vigorous competition in that market.

I'm proposing a sort of a FIRE for people who aren't in college.

Most of the time the people it advocates for won't have any legal right to demand a company not f ire them, but I'm sure they would at least appreciate a professional organization making the case for personal freedom of thought for them on TV, and arguing against the scalp-hunting mob's demands that the heretic must be burned at the stake right this moment.

Most of their work would not be legal in nature, but simply hortatory, persuasive: We must stop this vicious culture of scalp-hunting if any of us are going to keep our heads intact.

And it would be nice to shame the shamers in return -- to point out how militant, dogmatic, zealous, and cultish they are.

And how hateful.

And how petty. And stupid.

And cruel.

***

We don't all have to agree, but we must agree on this one point: that we have the right to disagree without mobs seeking to punish us into conformity.

That way lies -- and I do not mean this metaphorically -- war.

A people can only agree to be ruled by a ruler not to his liking if that rule is relatively light-handed and does not extend into every corner of his life.

If the rule by an antagonistic king is to be heavy-handed and dictate our every choice and utterance, then I'm afraid that we will not consent to be ruled by an enemy king, and that we will have to instead agree to divide our peoples and our lands into separate states.

It is the state of man that he must suffer under a number of masters -- his boss, his customers, his obligations to provide for his family, his own limitations, his own tendencies towards sin and self-destruction -- that place a claim on 16 of his 18 waking hours per day.

No man should permit himself to be controlled by 100,000 masters who lay claim not just to all his waking hours, but his dreaming hours as well -- these pagan cultists even want to control the little fantasies you indulge yourself in books, movies, and videogames too.

And he should act with dispatch and grim seriousness of purpose if one hundred thousand such villains come forward declaring themselves to be his new masters.

Jim Geraghty writes about the growing social-media threat to your ability to express yourself, but I should note, his post is descriptive and he certainly doesn't endorse or even hint at the prescriptions or warnings I do in my post.

He makes a lot of points I've made since years back: the real threat to your right to expression comes not from the government (mostly -- thankfully), but from pressure groups telling your boss to fire you or your customers to desert you or there will be consequences.

We need something to push back against that, and not just a few articles here or there making the point. We need an advocacy group with a troupe of paid on-call lawyers and advocates who can go on CNN and Fox at a moment's notice to make the case for more social latitude for heterodox thought and less social coercion that we must only repeat the same approved hymnals from the same weird leftist bible of thought-control.

Dullards hate the interesting and unimaginitive -- different ideas unsettle and frighten them, and perhaps make them feel a bit self-conscious about their own dimness -- and will stop at very little to destroy those who oppress them with new (or forbidden) ideas.

Most of the so-called "Twitter armies" are no more than a dozen or so people armed with algorithms to make it look as if there are tens of thousands of them.

If this shit was exposed. And if people stood up to and told Jesse Jackass to go screw off instead of cave to his extortion racket.

If only. If only.

From Last Thread

------------------------------------------------------------

On same-sex marriage, McMullin said in 2016 that he believes in the "traditional marriage between a man and a woman" but he "respects" the Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges (which found that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry) and thinks it is "time to move on" from the issue.[46] McMullin's mother is in a same-sex marriage, having married another woman after separating from his father, and McMullin has said that "As far as my mother's marriage is concerned, I believe in the sanctity of traditional marriage. It is an important part of my faith. My mother has a different view. That is OK. I love her very much."[5]

Recall the ACLU defending the KKK and American Nazi Party as they marched through the heavily Jewish neighborhood of Skokie back in 1977.

If we conservatives really are "Nazis" and "Klansmen" you'd think the ACLU would be rushing to our defense today as steadfastly as back then.

86 We don't all have to agree, but we must agree on this one point: that we have the right to disagree without mobs seeking to punish us into conformity.

++++

I have no problem with boycotts. If the people that despise Trump want to avoid putting money in his pocket, I can't fault them for that.

But, secondary boycotts are retarded. I am currently boycotting Target. I was a pretty minimal shopper at Target anyway, so my boycott hasn't had much effect on either me or them, but as long as they want to pursue their offensive bathroom policies, I will not spend the few dollars I would have in their stores. With other people doing the same thing, who knows, it might make a difference in the long run.

But, I do not make it a point to boycott every manufacturer that has a product in their stores. If they sell Hamilton Beach crockpots, I'm not going to chase after Hamilton Beach, demanding that they too honor my (virtual) picket line. If it was a Hamilton Beach crockpot I was looking for, I am happy to still buy it at someplace other than Target. Target still doesn't get my money.

It is the demand that everyone else honor their choice that makes what the Trump boycotters are offensive. You don't want to buy Trump stuff? Fine. You want to tell everyone else not to buy Trump stuff because of how awful Trump is in all the ways? Again, fine. But, when you decide to start punishing everyone else who isn't on board with your protest? Not fine. Take your groupthink and stuff it.

97 Actually, despite the fact that people are employed at will and can be fired for any reason, once you PROVIDE a reason, then you're open to more litigation than you probably realize.

For instance - ESPN and Curt Schilling. Now, Schiling (his horrendous foray into video games notwithstanding) is generally well off and not wanting for income from pansy organizations like ESPN. BUT. The idea that his off-hours opinion is grounds for dismissal given the ON-AIR left wing social justice warring, is ridiculous.

Normally, you say, ho-hum, double standard. The one place I know the courts don't look at double standards like "ho-hum" - employment law. You dismiss employ A for doing X, you damn sure better not have employees B, C, and D doing the same damn thing. It's a pain in the ass to sue, but in a case like that, you would most likely win. So, in this case, I'd say a 501(c) or whatever, could be useful in paying for cases like that where individuals wouldn't have the resources.

This is what companies need to figure out. These groups are loud (largely because they set up multiple accounts to mass blast social media) and obnoxious but small and meaningless. They not only lack the discipline to make anything really happen, they are too small to matter.

Consider the Dump rush guys. There was like what, 6 real people and 500 accounts? And they got one company to drop Rush, which added up to his yearly Tic Tac budget.

119 The most important political idea that no one's exploring is forming a 501(c)(3) which would have three missions:

I think such an enterprise would be doomed to failure before it ever got off the ground.

If you start out as "non-partisan", the progressive termites will burrow in and turn it into yet another progressive advocacy organization, using the "non-partisan" declaration in the by-laws as cover. (cf. O'Sullivan's Law)

If you try to escape the inevitability of O'Sullivan's Law by being explicitly and self-consciously conservative, you'll not be able to call yourself "non-partisan."

Problem here. Big Media wants spectacle. They want outrage. They want hysteria. It's the easiest copy they'll get short of a car chase, shark attack, or kid down a well.

Moderated, rational thought and temperance is simply not in their wheelhouse anymore. They pick the Social Justice Warrioring to be displayed and promoted. They omit that which rejects it. It's part and parcel of the propaganda machine that is the US media.

So in an ideal world, a 501 you describe would be useful. Alas, the last place they'll be invited to display their wares will be on Big Media.

180 Ace, I like where your head is on this, except for one thing: I don't think companies want any defense in most cases. In many cases they actually want to be coerced and want to fund the left. To many of them, it's just marketing. Even more to the point, we actually have businesses bullying government like Apple, PayPal, the NCAA, Amazon, etc.

When good companies are set upon by SJWs, for the most part the sensible in the nation actually respond organically without the need for counter protest or talking heads. Chik-Fil-A, Hobby Lobby, and even cake bakers and pizza shops actually have the normals rally too their aid because the attacks piss off their patrons to the point of buycott.

Additionally, it's hard for me to feel sorry for the side-swiping of media celebs like Paula Dean or Milo because, lets face it they are truthfully only victims of the degenerate entertainment industry that they feed from. You can't help build a monster and then be shocked when at some point in time it eats you.

I need to figure out a better straining method though, as we strained that stuff over and over and over through multi-layered cheese cloth inside a sieve and STILL ended up with some particulates.

Use a clarifying agent. Gelatin works, for example. It settles to the bottom, with the particulates, so then you decant off the wine from the sediment.

They don't do much any more in terms of advertising and publicity, you are expected to do that yourself unless your name rhymes with Teven Ping or Dames Matterson. They do tend to get shelf space preference, but a best seller gets out front no matter who publishes it.

Side-bar thing about Bannon and the NSC. Whole thing sounds very wrong. NSC has statutory members, also has discretionary "members", or people who attend at the president's request or discretion.

Impossible to imagine that Congress would have any say, or seek any, over micro-managing non-statutory member participation in NSC deliberations - so the whole story just sounds off.

And the DACA thing. It's not a "trade-off", there's nothing being traded, there could be no commitment from anyone (and none is being sought anyway) to do/not do anything in the future that would be of any value. Also, DACA is or should be sued out of existence, and Congress pressed to yet again reclaim its clear rightful power over all law-making and rule-setting in all such matters.

Proper technical and political strategery on recreating rule of law in immigration are obvious, always have been. Pursue deportation-ready serious criminals first (check), broaden focus to deportation-ready abusers of social welfare or other govt. programs (check, sort of happening now), get with major industries notoriously reliant on illegal labor and give them a time-line and glide path to end their criminality (with cooperation to start, and extermination via fines and punishment at the end of the rainbow if they don't comply).

These things will change the water temperature. A few more steps should be added by the time these above steps are in full swing. After a while of this, and border security being put in place ...... and many of the "dreamers" will leave anyway. It's the smallest and most politically risky (though that risk is greatly exaggerated by most here) identifiable aspect of the problem - leave it for last or close to last.

IIRC, from my days of cooking moonshine in Sweden, the filtration stage takes place before the addition of water, and during each filtration, the charcoal absorbs a certain amount of alcohol. Hence the hesitancy to filter beyond the minimum. They want maximum yield.
