Pence Delivers Trump's Message to NATO -- Honor Your Promise to Raise Spending for Your Own Self-Defense -- and NATO Agrees

There's been a lot of stupid talk on this point from liberals their allies the neocon nevertrumpers, who claim that a demand that treaty partners honor their side of a bargain somehow undermines the treaty.

Here's the deal. Suppose I'm a tough guy at school, like Adam Baldwin in My Bodyguard, but with even more GAINZZZ. Suppose I offer my protection to a bunch of pussies, and say I'll fight their fights for them, if they help me with the things they're good at, like homework, playing a female elf cleric in Dungeons & Dragons, and failing at life.

I might have a big precondition for the offer of protection. Such as this:

* Kid, you gotta train in the basics of fighting with me a couple of times a week and do SQUATZZZ so that you're not such an easy target. Not only does this help you, Kid, it helps me, because the more you can act as your own deterrent system, the less bullies will pick on you, and then the less I'll have to get into fights on your behalf.

* Furthermore, in case I wind up getting into more trouble than I can handle, I'd sort of like you to be able to pitch in here and there. Maybe grab one of his arms so I can get in a clean punch, maybe just hold my beer for me while I choke a clown out.

Not that unreasonable, right? Since the protection being offered involves risk to the one providing it -- Matt Dylan was supposed to be a tough guy because he like carried a pack of cigarettes in his rolled-up t-shirt sleeve, and plus I've got a sweet motorcycle I'd hate to see thrown in a lake --it's not unreasonable for the person offering the protection and back-up for the protectee to take modest precautions and employ basic deterrent strategies to reduce the protector's costs in the bargain.

That was the deal that was struck. The Cassandra Chorus of the neocon nevertrump rump party thinks it's "weak" to ask treaty partners to honor treaty commitments and harden themselves up against a potential aggressor. That is, it's "weak" to demand that treaty partners take the threat of Russian invasion kind of seriously if they expect us to kill tens of thousands of our own servicemen protecting them from that invasion.

I think they also consider it kind of "low-class" to take a firm position on our getting our side of the bargain, because, apparently, it's "higher class" to just give away the store for free with no considerations received in return. I think you signal your upper income level by showing off how little fucks you give about return on investment and repayment of loans and stuff.

There seems to be a deep undercurrent of that in all the complaints about the America First idea -- that it's all a bit grubby and lower-middle-class to be so concerned about petty things like money. Someone who is very comfortably rich doesn't have to worry about money, and can afford to think only in Ideals without any consideration of pricetag, and I guess we're all supposed to adopt that attitude of the comfortably rich, even if we're not personally rich, and even if the country is not particularly fat with disposable cash at the moment.

Anyway, Pence delivered the demand, and NATO is at least providing lip-service to the idea of not being such bully-magnet pussies in the future.

I doubt that will ever happen, but the CRISIS IN NATO is at least on pause for a few days, until the poor dears start exciting themselves up all over again, drinking sugared soda and getting all fidgety on gummy worms.

I can't help but notice that "conservatism" has been transformed by our alleged intellectuals into a "market-based" justification for endless obligations of welfare to third parties, and in which it's considered unseemly and gross to ask for anything in return for our own exertions on other's behalf.

We're supposed to do all of this peace-keeping and international-justice-seeking, precisely as liberals argue, without any actual self-interest to vindicated (having any self-interest in these matters makes taints them with dirty, mercenary greed), and we're always just supposed to do for everyone out of the overflowing munificence of our global citizen heart.

"What heart?" -- Tom, Miller's Crossing

In Progress: Milo has resigned (probably with encouragement) from Breitbart, and is now giving a press conference, carried in a livestream.

2. You get $0 from this point forward and get the hell out of the country.

Choose wisely.

7 Given that the left doesn't agree to the premise that countries have to act like people when it comes to their finances (i.e. having more debt than they have the ability to pay), I don't see why they'd agree to it when it comes to self defense, either.

The thing is, we've HUGELY reduced our footprint in Europe in the last 20 years. To the point that pretty much all that's left is air power, which isn't insignificant, but that's not the same deterrent as heavy armored forces.

For the most part, the Euroweenies have been glad to see us leave, but they fully expect us to come running if the shit hits the fan, even though they haven't bothered paying for their own defense.

The Frogs are the worst. They stayed out of the military side of NATO through most of the Cold War and afterwards, secure in the knowledge that when the US defended the rest of Europe, due to their geographic location, France would see the benefits, without having to lift a finger to help.

How dare we demand that European countries give the slightest fucks at all about protecting themselves? Don't you see that we are so superior that we can do that without any true cost to us.

55 This whole situation with NATO is eerie. Prior to WW II, when it looked like the Germans might invade Poland, the Brits and the French tried to bring the Russians over to their side. By this time Hitler had been saying all sorts of horrible things about the slavs, and had announced his intentions of "expanding" eastward. So the Russians were natural allies.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but the plan was somethign like this: If the Germans invaded, the Brits would commit their one (1) division, the French would commit their five divisions, and the Russians would commit their forty five divisions.

In other words, the plan was "let's you and him fight". Perfidious Albion would no doubt proceed to take advantage of a weakened USSR like they'd done in other theaters. Stalin, not being an idiot, threw in with the Germans instead.

I don't see any reason for the US to defend Germany and France if they're not willing to put in the slightest bit of effort. The German military, in particular, is a holding area for unemployable young men so the government can keep down the unemployment statistics. They have a handful of elite units, but the Russians would slice through the rest like a hot knife through butter.

The point, in the end, is social justice even if contrary to the plain meaning of the agreed upon words. This applies to treaties, immigration law, tax policy, the First Amendment, et cetera et cetera.

80 Back when it was Ivan v GI Joe, we would paper over the weaker sisters in the NATO alliance because it was better to pay their freight and keep them on our team.

Starting with Glasnost, we reevaluated the math. First, Mt. Pinatubo gave us the initiative to unass the Philippines, then we did it on our own with Greece.

Since Russian tanks aren't going to come down the Fulda Gap anymore, and NATO's big worry is much farther east, we would like people to meet their obligations.

And somehow that is upending 70 years of peace or some dumb stuff.

165 There's some key points missing in this. I learned this from seeing the presser with Pence and the NATO defense head (a straight shooter) during the weekend.

Quite recently, the NATO members agreed and committed to each other to spend 2.0% of GDP on defense. That was the deal. Only the US, Britain, Poland and Greece and one or two others are doing what they said. Germany is at 1.2%.

So what Pence and the NATO guy said was that the other members need to honor their commitments already agreed with each other. Questions from the press pack about what the "or else" will be. Pence was diplomatic: to be determined later.

Ball is in Merkel's court.

All part of Trump's Art of the Deal! Although MSM is portraying it as Pence and Mattis having to clean up another Trump mess.

As I said yesterday, I admire Milo's courage in his fight against PC speech silencing. I support him in that.

However, he did himself no favors yesterday when, in his explanation of why he was flippantly describing gay sex and it's predilection for young people, that for a 17 year old to be taken "under the wing" of an older gay man for sex and an introduction to the gay lifestyle was a good thing for the 17 year old because it made the 17 year old feel better.

1. It supported the notion that gay men are predators, looking for the young to sex and cement into the lifestyle

2. He thought this was a good thing. That a 17 year old should be cemented into the lifestyle and be used for sex by an older adult.

Neither of the above is considered acceptable and desirable in the heterosexual world, so why he thinks that 97% of the population who is hetero would smile and accept this in the homosexual world makes one question his judgment and world view.
This is one of those factoids that the majority of people despise about the gay lifestyle. And Milo thinks it's a good thing, so he shouldn't be surprised when the people, employers, etc. feel they can speak their minds and opinions and let him go.

After all, he rails against the PC world. A PC world would have soothed over his stance and kept him employed, because, you know, gay.
Breitbart is doing what they think is best for Breitbart, as did CPAC,( yeah yeah, I know).

174 @107 I do wonder if a massed tank attack is even an option anymore against a First World army. It seems to me they're pretty much where the mass infantry charge was in WWI. The defense technology would devastate an attack, or so it seems to me (in my ignorance).
-------------------------

Maybe, maybe not. Tanks are virtually immune to a lot of older manpacked HEAT weapons. And they're now mounting anti-missile defenses as well to deal with the newer stuff.

One reason why the Russians lost so many tanks in Chechnya is because they got lazy and left the reactive armor at home that would have helped to protect against the RPG ambushes the Chechens performed.

Interesting, but it also seems to me that it's a lot easier to build vast numbers of new missiles and disperse them, then it is to defend a target like a tank, which can carry only so many anti-missile missiles. Numbers will eventually tell and overwhelm the defenses. Couple that with autonomy and visual recognition software, so that you don't need to rely on a man keeping his courage in the face of almost certain death as the tanks roll towards him, and I don't see a robust future for massed tanks.

Again, just my thoughts, and again, I have no specific knowledge in this area.

The titles to articles have sometimes trended recently to rivaling TMZ or World News Daily. If you then read the article, most of them are pretty solid.
Today's lineup is pretty much in line with the article.

Noticed the article about the bowling alley riot that happened in Allen Park, a residential suburb of Detroit's "Downriver" communities.
Saw that on local news last night. A group of young black men got into a fight over some women who wasn't at the event. They were in a party room at the bowling alley(large modern alley that has hosted national championships) and the fight spilled out into the alley area. Then their girlfriends joined in and it was one big war.

Someone of course, took cell phone video and sent it to the local news station....

Putin himself has said as much - the nation simply doesn't have the funds to mount a conventional war against a peer; but they look for ways.

316 I think a lot of stuff with Trump is class oriented.

WASP types of both parties, don't "negotiate." They don't have to.

That's something blue collar peons-- the "tacky unwashed masses"-- have to do.

So when Trump does something like this-- or when he saves the taxpayers a BILLION on a jet-- they look down their noses.

Bargaining is crass and low class.

They're better than that.

And that's how we got Trump.

Because something is legal doesn't make it morally or socially acceptable.

It left me wondering if homosexuality is genetic in all cases; it seems to me that a traumatic incident inflicted at a critical point in a child's development could imprint him or her with a sexual orientation that differs from what would have been the case if the sexual assault had not occurred.

As the child grows into adulthood, this can lead to all kinds of dysfunctional thinking, such as it is OK for an older man to initiate a child into the joys of The Life.

Posted by: Jen at February 21, 2017 03:19 PM (cWhln)

We had a gay kid in our High School class. Statistics being what they are, I think we only had one or at least only one who was not deep in the closet (it was the late 70s early 80s.

Anyway, he had got desperate to the point of sending notes in the library cubicles to guys offering a blow job. His hormones were kicking in like most of the heterosexual kids who were getting hand jobs and blow jobs and screwing. He was about as isolated as you could get, unfortunately. He fairly quickly got a beat down from sending a note to the wrong guy, and became a pariah at the same time.

In that context I think what Milo said makes a fair degree of sense, more so than in the heterosexual world where sexual outlets with similar aged people are not all that hard to make happen, whether that's desirable as parents or society or not. I would imagine the main challenge for such a kid is finding another person, kid or adult, with the same orientation. Though that might be a bit easier today.

Ace noted that for vulnerable teens these relationships can be an issue. But then the same applies for relationships with people of the same age.

I was, at one time, a bit of an over committer. I didn't get burned by an older women, but I burned myself with girls and women my own age and got burned by some of my girlfriends who took advantage of that shortcoming. I had an older woman who actually helped me move towards a more healthy outlook (though I was in my 20 at the time). So, I don't reflexively recoil from the idea that a gay 17 year old with a male sex drive is necessarily all that vulnerable. We had a 17 year old in my basic platoon ready to kill and die for his country, FWIW.

Does that make any sense?

They tell her to fill out the credit app online. In the area that says "trade references" she puts "none" because she doesn't have any yet. The form doesn't accept that answer. Do you think you can get someone on the phone who can bypass that portion?

Fuck no.

The local rep can't even take an order that is prepaid without having this particular credit application filled out. Even though the last thing we need is credit to buy fucking sausages. However, those sausages are the ones her customers are used to, so that's what she wants.

Apparently, there is no check box for someone with tons of money and no trade references to click on.

My frustration level is at about eleventy-five.

Luckily the guy who brought the last batch of 180 dozen eggs from a local farm was happy to take cash. He apparently doesn't have a corporate credit manager to answer to.

They prevented a lot of bloodshed and destruction that way.

In the case of the sadly many women I know of who were molested as girls, it tends to have a very detrimental effect on their understanding of sexuality: they tend to either become oversexualized, "sluts" or extremely hostile toward sex, "frigid." Some become lesbians, but was that because of the molestation or their inherent inclination? Impossible to know without a time machine.

Either way, there's no question that sexual activity before a child is ready to deal with the power of it emotionally and mentally is very bad. No matter what the left tries to tell us.

I dated a guy who was somewhat bi; his first sexual experience was under the age of consent, with a guy. (Interestingly and sadly, that recent study from NY Presbyterian? Don't recall, said a large number of people who identified as gay had been abused sexually as a child.) The ex never characterized it as 'abuse', although there was a large age gap and he was 15 I believe. I always wondered if he just didn't want to plumb those depths or he just accepted it as part of his experience or what. The little he said on it in an odd way reminded me of what Milo said, although, again, poor choice to speak about.

382 Gay men are different when it comes to sexuality. They're promiscuous and tend to start young. If you're in the gay world, what Milo spoke about is no big thing.

Trouble is, he was starting to mainstream. He killed it on Maher. Can't have that
Posted by: Ignoramus at February 21, 2017 03:37 PM (SIY7D)

Yes he was mainstreaming which made his charitably chaotic stance on consent a deathblow. I don't care what the homosexual community thinks is normal because the community is perverted. Flip one of the sexes and no one would approve. People don't approve of 30+ year old guys having sex with 14 - 17 year old girls for a host of intelligent reasons. Just because it's man-boy doesn't suddenly make it okay.

because it would be Dubya Bush 2.0 That's what they want to back to. Trump though upsets the whole apple cart.

If in some alternate universe Mike Pence was our nominee and won, it would be the same basic Bush NeoCon platform with maybe a little more social conservatism sprinkled in.

I don't think he's the devil, but I guarantee you every Establishment impulse out of the WH comes from Pence.

385 A friend of mine told me he always plays the chicks in video games when he has the option. He explained that he can watch a big muscular dude running around or a (usually) scantily clad woman with the same abilities, and one of those seemed more gay to him. Seemed like an interesting point.

388 Again Milo has shown that the Neo-Communists are just a dirty and low rent as the Left. They will brand a man as a pedophile if he was sexually abused as a child and talks about it.

389 That he credits his ability to give blowjobs to a priest who taught him how when he was 13.

Posted by: JEM at February 21, 2017 03:43 PM (TppKb)

This is just tragic, for Milo and every other child who had to endure such a violation. Any kind of healthy intellectual and emotional development that the child was experiencing just goes of the rails at the moment he/she is raped.

Milo still needs to heal from that trauma. He probably thinks it's all in the past, but as a sex abuse survivor I know it takes decades to heal. I'm going to pray for him. I hope he'll come out of this stronger.

From browsing around on social media, it appears that he has a lot of support and the general consensus is this is a hit job.

Posted by: kallisto at February 21, 2017 03:51 PM (kD8Fh)

390 I haven't been following this whole Milo saga-except that he supposedly said something that some considered indefensible. What was it?

That he credits his ability to give blowjobs to a priest who taught him how when he was 13.
Posted by: JEM at February 21, 2017 03:43 PM (TppKb)

Fenelonspoke, the above quote is from a late night radio interview he did with someone I've never heard of. Milo's enemies found the recording and posted the quote along with some other flip, off the cuff comments Milo made in response to being egged on by the interviewer.

It is not unlike Trump's pussy comments although in this case, Milo knew he was being recorded. Stuff you wouldn't say to just anyone but might say as a one upper in friendly banter.

The problem , IMO, is he dug himself in deeper, when in responding to this "outing" of the comments, he went through a statement of his opinion that pedophilia is wrong, he despises it, etc. but then started explaining and backing the acquiring of young confused gay men at age 17(legal in Great Britain, not legal everywhere here) by older gay men who bed them and parade them around the gay community. He said he thought that was a good thing for the 17 year old because it helped them feel better about being gay.

Well, put an anorexic into a room full of anorexics with laxatives and toilets and they might feel better too. For a while until they realized how used they were.

I think he was more flippantly dealing with *what happened* and *why it happens*. He is a flippant person.

The whole "supports X" argument is *literally* just applying a maximally-hostile interpretation to what he said, and then treating him as if the hostile interpretation is true.

Basically, the left/establishment are turning the entirety of society into a divorce court.

401 Good example of the new style of warfare is what happened when the Russians moved to secure Crimea. Tanks and choppers, massed infantry? No. Quiet infiltration by anonymous forces who occupied key infrastructure elements, without firing a shot. First thing they did, though, was to cut comms and power for the area, recognizing that this would paralyze and confuse their opponents and keep them from bringing force to bear in time. They prevented a lot of bloodshed and destruction that way.

The thing there is that they had a base of of Russian nationals living in Ukraine prepping for a conflict for decades. Without that base, the Russians would have had a harder time at it.

412 The whole issue of funding for NATO is ages old. I have a bit of literature from the Dutch Embassy in my archives here from 1989 where the Dutch government was making the case that NATO allies DO in fact pay their way in the organization. I don't think there has been a secretary-general in the organization who has ever not had an issue on this topic. I think it would be better diplomatically to have held up the UK, Estonia, Greece (!) and Poland as examples as NATO allies who do pay the freight.
By the way, the very last thing this country needs to do is to strike any kind of grand bargain with Russia. Our government needs to make plain that NATO isn't going anywhere and that Russia just needs to suck it up.

414 Very good analysis, Ace. But I would add one very important thing.

The night that the air raids started Gulf War I, January 16th, 1991, I was at St. Bartholomew's Church in midtown Manhattan (this used to be Jackie Kennedy's church, so you get the socio-economics). As I was walking out with some friends and acquaintances, I saw the aerial bombardment of Baghdad on the security guard's TV. We were stunned, and the guard said, "The war has started!"

One of the women, a typical snot-nosed liberal, said haughtily, "Well, that's too bad. But at least WE don't know anyone who's in the military!"

My brother was an Air Force pilot, and I felt a hot flame of rage consume me. I got in the bitch's face and said, tensely, "You know ME, and MY BROTHER is in the AIR FORCE."

She was completely stunned, and with some embarrassment (hey, this was 26 years ago), she apologized.

But that's just the thing: "Liberals" of her type are blisteringly arrogant, cruelly contemptuous of those who fight and die to keep their sorry fucking asses in one piece. And they're also so fucking sure that everyone who DOES serve in the military must be a toothless redneck. [The "toothless rednecks," in many cases, are morally, and certainly patriotically, vastly superior to these assholes.]

So, you see -- Leftoids have No Skin in the Game. No Kin in the Game, either. They regard patriotic Americans who fight and die in our wars as their janissaries, and they are just as happy to see our boys die. [See Jane C**tface Fonda.]

There are no words to express my detestation of those types. My family's honor roll: Brother, USAF Captain; cousin, USN fighter pilot, USS Nimitz; great-uncle, brigadier general, Patton's Third Army, WW II; cousin, bird colonel, US Army; uncle, artillery spotter, Korean War; and on and on. All the way back to the French and Indian War. I'm fiercely proud of our MEN, but Leftoid scum don't know the meaning of Honor, or the meaning of American Manhood.
