Tuesday Overnight Open Thread (2/21/17) Workin' Edition

Paid family leave: Paid leave for fathers, too, please.

Fathers are much more likely to report wanting to work full time than mothers, but they are also twice as likely to report that they spend too little time with their children. If men are serious about wanting to play a larger role in childcare while earning a decent income, they need the workplace flexibility necessary to tend to both work and family needs. Paid paternity leave can play an important role here. Fathers who take time off work at and around childbirth are more likely to be involved in childcare later in the child’s life. Children whose fathers are more involved in their early years perform better than those with fathers who are less involved on a variety of measures, including improved language skills, cognitive test scores, and social development.

The ONT would like to know how this will affect productivity and who is going to pay for this leave?

Quotes of The Day

The whole secret of life is to be interested in one thing profoundly and in a thousand things well. Horace Walpole

Quote II

If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end, it would probably be Labor Day Weekend. Doug Larson

Quote III

The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. Vince Lombardi

President Trump revokes Obama rules on coal mining.

The bill quashes the Office of Surface Mining’s Stream Protection Rule, a regulation to protect waterways from coal mining waste that officials finalized in December.

The legislation is the second Trump has signed into law ending an Obama-era environmental regulation. On Tuesday, he signed a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution undoing a financial disclosure requirement for energy companies.

While you are at work, do you get kicked? Spit on? Meet paramedic Jennie.

The drunken monk was more or less non-violent, but not every patient is. Cubitt has been kicked, punched and bitten on the job. She has suffered black eyes — she refers to them as enduring eye “make-up” — split lips and had her private parts grabbed, more than once, including by a man she was administering oxygen to.

Paramedic Jennie might have a tough gig. But, it's not one of the worst jobs, evah.

In case you are a Never Trumper and want to leave. Can you pass the Australian citizen test?

So you think astronauts have a cool job? They do except for one small hangup. No Valu-Rite in outtaspace.

Travelling thousands of miles above the Earth, into the great inky unknown, is hard work. It’s stressful and scary. So why shouldn’t astronauts treat themselves to an end-of-Earth-day cocktail to unwind?
Unfortunately for space explorers looking to wet their whistle, consuming alcoholic beverages is widely prohibited by the government agencies that send them to places like the International Space Station.

Winter is coming to an end in the Upper Midwest. Pipelines in North Dakota to commence. Who will blink first, the protesters or The State of ND?

As dawn breaks over an encampment that was once home to thousands of people protesting the Dakota Access oil pipeline, a few hundred holdouts rise for another day of resistance.

They aren’t deterred by the threat of flooding, nor by declarations from state and federal authorities that they must leave by Wednesday or face possible arrest. They’re determined to remain and fight a pipeline they maintain threatens the very sanctity of the land.

The anti-gunners are angling for your guns in a different way.The new public health issue. Suicide.

Because both criminal violence and gun rights have become contentious political topics, research on the health and safety aspects of gun ownership in the US is barely funded. In fact, many have questioned whether it should be studied at all. But Northeastern University's Matthew Miller used a talk at the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science to argue that there's an area where the data shows a clear link between gun access and public health and that this topic reveals some hints as to how to better manage safety.

The issue in focus is suicide.

Accountants, enrolled agents and bookkeepers. Your jobs may be in jeopardy. Robots on the march.

More than 2 million people were employed as accountants, bookkeepers, and auditors in 2015. Until now, these types of information-oriented professions have resisted automation because they require managing unstructured data emanating from the real world, making judgments, and dealing with actual people. What’s different now, however, is that artificial intelligence’s perceptive capabilities have improved. Machines can now handle images, sounds, and text in a way that enables them to ingest and analyze data at high volume, without making costly mistakes. Between accounting professionals and truck drivers alone, about 4.5 million human jobs could be ceded to robots over the next few years.

If we are to eliminate those jobs, The ONT would prefer to see the flat tax implemented.

38 Also there is no rise in anti semitism.

What there is is a coordinated effort by the ADL and the media to actually start reporting anti Semitic incidents much like the media reporting of homelessness when Republicans are in office.

This is coming from the ADL and the holocaust commission both of these organizations are led by former Obama administration officials Johnathan Goldblatt and the infamous Ben Rhodes.

Well, that's easy. Those of us without kids. One of the reasons I took retirement was that I was working to support everyone else. If you have a moderate, not large, salary and no dependents you are working to pay taxes. Around April I would calculate approximately how much of my pay was going to taxes. I added up federal income tax, state income tax, social security tax, fica, property tax, then guessed at sales tax and gas tax. It made me sick.

I figured "to hell with it", and adjusted my budget to live on my pension.

62 Why Astronauts Are Banned From Getting Drunk In Space?

++++

I saw this linked someplace, with the above headline (the actual headline of the piece) as the teaser. I wanted to know. So, I clicked and read.

"Alcohol is not permitted onboard the International Space Station for consumption," says Daniel G Huot, spokesperson for Nasa's Johnson Space Center. "Use of alcohol and other volatile compounds are controlled on ISS due to impacts their compounds can have on the station's water recovery system."

It messes up the water recovery system. OK. How? They can take the urine and other waste water and make it drinkable, but only if there is no alcohol in it? I don't doubt that it's true, but it would be nice if the article that purports to tell us why it is a problem would give us a sentence or two telling us why. Instead, the piece blathers on about jet pilots and car drivers and other trivia.

I hate "reporters".

81 Every female in my office take all five sick days during the year whether they're sick or not. They tell me I'm crazy because I don't. Most companies now have changed to flex days instead of vaca days and sick days because of it. The total flex days are a few days less than the previous combined sick and vaca days. Many have also done away with carry over or pay back for vaca / sick days. Of course government jobs / unions let you bank years of vacation .

Who the fvck are we to stop people acting on their suicidal desires?

We don't stop them from mutilating themselves with hormones and
surgery when they have the psychotic delusion that they are the wrong

Why should we stop them from killing themselves?

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 21, 2017 10:01 PM (rF0hx)
I hear this a lot from libertarians, and it makes me want to scream with frustration, because the reason is obvious. When people kill themselves, they generally don't ensure that the resulting carcass is properly bled and disemboweled. The meat spoils quickly and is unsuitable for human consumption.
Think, people, think! Unanticipated consequences!!

The only time I've noticed when drivers dont do this and force you to go around them in the passing lane because they are driving too slow was in NY and, yep Colorado.

This might have been the case in California too but I cant remember.

96 "some companies are moving to unlimited vacation"

Mine just did that, but it was driven by the bean counters, because it makes good financial sense to the company. First, it takes a huge liability off the books. Second, because time off is no longer an entitlement, managers are no longer required to grant it, only as permitted by project schedules. Third, because it's no longer use-it-or-lose-it, there's no pressure to burn off accumulated time at the end of the year, so many employees may actually take less time off. And finally, there has to be, at least subconsciously, a perception that employees who take less time off are more dedicated.

Under our old system I could roll-over days to the next year, up to a point, and then take a whole bunch of time off that year. But now that there is no accounting, and no entitlement, it's much less likely that I'd be able to take a month or two off.

Posted by: Bacon Jeff at February 21, 2017 10:15 PM (VSenK)

97 I haven't taken more than a one week vacation at a time since I entered the work force. Most of it was because I hated to dig out of the work on my desk that was waiting for me on my return than I did the vacation time. Should have been a union crane operator or a fireman.

Shoulda coulda woulda.

Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at February 21, 2017 10:15 PM (IDPbH)

98 And conversely if a company won't give me more than 2 weeks vacation, there are plenty others that will. I have 25 PTO days. It's not because my employer loves paying me to not work. It's because they know the guy down the street will gladly do that for me if my employer decided to cut back on vacation or pay or whatever. It's this whole weird free market for labor thingy.
Posted by: #neverskankles at February 21, 2017 10:08 PM (APQfM)

108 There are people where I work that have over a month of vacation time. Plus the 32 hours for sick days. You used to be able to carry all of that over. They changed it last year and have made it mandatory that you must use 40 hours of vacation through the year. You can carry over up to 40 hours vacation to the next year. Anything after that will be paid out. And for the 32 hours sick pay if you didn't use it that will be paid out as well.

I'm pretty ok with this. Since around May, I'll have 40 hours vacation to carry over, 8 hours of vacation to be paid out and 32 hours to be paid out as well. So an extra week's pay.

Otherwise...this is what we call "snowflake" behavior---in short, there was/is a severe personality disorder that was exacerbated by the election---it isn't PTSD."

OTOH, children whose fathers are not involved at all in their early years are much better at basketball.

I love logical fallacies, and will put this one into my collection. Children whose fathers are still in the picture are likely to have higher IQs, because Dad - and Mom too - probably had higher IQs, at least sufficiently high to plan effectively.

The statement above invites the conclusion that children perform better because their fathers were more involved. I very much doubt that that's true.

Exactly. These are business decisions that a corporation makes. My niece and her husband are both engineers working for a big tech company. They have all kinds of great perks, including maternity and paternity leave. It's a business decision. I think it depends on the town. One of the things I really liked about Colorado Springs is that I'm 10 minutes from everything I'd take for granted in NY. Just love being close to Natural Grocers AND Trader Joes and 5 different supermarkets.

Although personally I think I might like Woodland Park better, it's even more conservative and it has more forestry as opposed to the arid east side of Pikes Peak, and just enough amenities to keep me from going crazy.

Going further than that though and I start to get uncomfortable. I go to Buena Vista and I start panicking because I can't find the nearest City Market. Been too spoiled by city amenities unfortunately.

My brother lives right on Denver/Aurora line in fairly new development on the site of the old Stapleton airport. And thanks to an influx of Somalis in Aurora, Stapleton has become the go-to place for theft (no more furniture on porches, working in your garage w/the door open, etc.). 249 I love logical fallacies, and will put this one into my collection. Children whose fathers are still in the picture are likely to have higher IQs, because Dad - and Mom too - probably had higher IQs, at least sufficiently high to plan effectively.

The statement above invites the conclusion that children perform better because their fathers were more involved. I very much doubt that that's true.

Posted by: NaCly Dog at February 21, 2017 10:19 PM (u82oZ)

Thanks! I'm glad you got to see it.

The landing site was the old Launch Complex 13, which was built for testing the Atlas ICBM and used for missile tests and satellite launches from 1958-1978. The pad was abandoned after that, then leased by SpaceX a couple years ago and converted to Landing Zone 1, or LZ-1. This was the third Falcon 9 landing at the site, and the first one in daylight.

The most famous of the early Atlas pads was LC-14 just to the north, which launched the manned Mercury flights including John Glenn in 1962. That pad is also abandoned, and there are a couple of monuments at the site.

Mothers who can breast feed are up the socioeconomic (i.e., cognitive) totem pole far enough to get their way. Partners in law firms can breast feed, and accommodations will be made for them. Workers on the Perdue chicken dressing line, not so much. The example I used to use: "children with trust funds (or driven around in Mercedes) are brighter than others, so we need to give every child a trust fund, or every child's parents a Mercedes."

The fantasy genre has been around for a while now. Tolkien made it big...but it was around long before him

Science Fiction is rather younger but it goes back at least 100 years.

But who came up with idea of combining the two genres? For example, the "Fantasy" novel where you find out their world is a space ship or magic is high technology, etc?

298 The ONT would like to know how this will affect productivity and who is going to pay for this leave?
-----

So I could see this being AEI trolling. Stay with me.

The whole "equality" thing needs to get discussed honestly. Start with Jack Welch: There is no work-life balance, only work-life choices, and you make them, and they have consequences.

Women may want kids, and want a career, and that sucks, because the two will inevitably conflict in highly competitive fields, or really any fields that require you to work outside your home seeing as our beloved teachers unions still don't feel like working "holidays" that no private actor takes off, or summers. I digress. Some men want this too, and other people invariably want other non-family things that also conflict with their jobs. Not fair.

But life's not fair. Sucks, but it's not. Scarcity and competition are real things. These are the choices, and all producers or providers, not just women, face them.

This whole "equality" movement is fraudulent because it's premised on feels equality, subjective weighting and black box SJW calculus (lol, SJWs can't do calculus). The actual result is entirely unequal. Equality needs to be equality.

So, perhaps by agitating for equality with the new privileged female status on behalf of males, AEI is actually subtly pushing to eliminate all special treatment.

While individual market actors may hire or fire in accordance with their preferences, the regulations and laws constraining freedom to contract should not care whether time spent away from work is spent with family or playing erotic tentacle video games. A meritocracy compensates people based on their achievement, which in the market is value created, which is a function of time invested, end of story.

Could AEI be using this kind of silly platform as a crowbar to pry the broader discussion - that true equality is meritocratic? Maybe?

Nah.

But their argument could be an interesting way to goad progressives into either admitting they in fact seek INequality, or have them double down on the bluff and blow up their privileges by having to bestow them on the protected class of everyone.

314 I didn't take early social security. As far as I'm concerned, if the social security administration gave me the money I paid in for 38 years, I'd be satisfied. They won't do that and I expect something back for the decades that they took money out of my paychecks. If Trump decides that the way to save social security is to slash it, I'll be fine with that.

There you go again, making perfect sense.

You can't be an astronaut, a fireman, a police officer, a doctor, a major league baseball player, a scientist, and a soldier. To pursue some directions you necessarily close off others. This is called, I believe, adulthood. If you try to do more than one of them (at any competitive level), most likely you'll make a mess of all of them.

So what's it going to be: mother, or CEO? At the margin, ONE of them has to give. You'll either be a shitty mother, or a shitty CEO, or if you're especially unlucky/lousy at time management, both.

And no, having Lupe raise your kids does not count as you being a good mother.

Colorado bat shit crazy involves the micromanaging types that want to tax the crap out of you and destroy the middle class. There's either 1%ers and everyone else trying to maintain their sanity and pay the bills.
Idaho (North) bat shit crazy involves the complete lack of any managing types that don't want to tax you while offering little or no government services...like plowing snow or a functional school or even a police force. No building codes are awesome, until you see the shithole houses all over the place. And Californians come here to buy any home they can get their hands on, which drives up the price of shithole houses. There are 1%ers here, too. Most are retirees, who don't need to drive to work and don't have children in school. They love keeping property taxes down and pushing most of the tax burden on the working class. Lots of welfare recipients up here FYI. Just my 2 cents.

Actually...that pretty much covers most feminist arguments now that I think about it.

For example, a common feminist argument is that most, if not all, prehistoric societies were matriarchal.

Now there is some evidence that some were. If so though, they were universally replaced by patriarchal ones. And the prehistoric societies seemed to be awfully comfortable with things like human sacrifice. Overall that doesn't really sound like a recommendation to go back to matriarchal civilization - "Almost able to stop the local neighborhood boys from killing or raping us! Well, the people we don't sacrifice ourselves first!"

And now, he lets me work from home and I make it into the office once a year. He told a coworker that he'd wanted to do something for me when my husband died but didn't know what to do. Garden variety French were perfectly happy to collaborate. Even the Nazis were astonished at how eagerly they helped to round up Jews.

The Resistance was basically the French Communist Party, to a good approximation. They went from pacifist (Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact era) to bitterly anti-fascist (starting, oh. about 22 June 1941) in the blink of an eye.

Rather like Hollywood, in fact.

Women tend to be less aggressive. At one time people thought that women might start to dominate as jockeys. A jockey needs to be small in size, while being physically fit. Women seemed perfect for it.But it didn't work out that way.

Except that being a jockey is also very dangerous. They need to be aggressive enough to push into high risk positions. A split second and the person can be trampled. There are some women jockeys, but proportionately not that many. There just aren't that many women who will risk death or serious injury for the crappy pay that they get if they lose.

I have no idea where McMuffin came from, but the whole thing just screams "Soros!".

He was a 3rd party candidate that got more attention than Johnson or Stein, two candidates that were on the ballot in all 50 states, and were running "national" campaigns. McMuffin was on the ballot in a handful of states, and it appeared was only really hoping to siphon off enough votes from Trump to give Hillary Utah or to actually win Utah and maybe hand the election to Hillary.

The guy won 725K votes nationwide. 0.5% of the votes.

There is another place where liberals try to make a similarly stupid argument. They try to say that there are gay animals, therefore homosexuality is moral. Well, mice eat their young. Lions kill all cubs sired by other lions when they take over a pride. Are liberals really saying that *just because and animal does it* therefore it is automatically moral behavior? 413 A cruel and sad dilemma afflicts the reloading community, yet AFAIK there are no NGOs, or colored ribbons, or fund-raisers, or Academy Awards acceptance speeches, or public demonstrations devoted to this problem.

When one drinks, one cannot reload. Pretty simple and obvious.

So one work-around is to just do brass processing (decap/resize, clean, maybe trim) when drinking. You get a little reloading stuff done, you drink.

But then there comes a point when one runs out of brass to clean, or resize, or trim. When all the brass you have is ready for loading.

So you're stuck. No drinking - or, no reloading. With every imaginable injustice, and some unimaginable ones, and even quite a few imaginary ones, getting so much righteous attention from the compassionate among us, it's a disgrace that the reloader's drinking dilemma remains unaddressed.

So now, even accepting their spurious assertion, we're looking to failed, no longer extant, societies for guidance. I love liberals pointing to primitive tribes with bones through their noses (not talking about Seattle, Portland, or Berkeley here) for tips on how to live.

426 The company I retired from had one of the dumbest/strangest sick day policies ever conceived. We did not get "sick days" at all. It would be an unpaid "occurrence". Too many in a year and you could be terminated.

However, if you were out one day or out 5 in a row, it all counted as 1 "occurrence". They also had a Short Term Disability Plan, that did not pay you for your first day off sick, but did pay you at eighty percent for days 2, 3 and 4. After that you had to have a doctor's note.

Since the company adamantly refused to give anyone an excused, unpaid absence for a Monday or Friday what ended up happening was people would say screw it when they merely wanted a 3 day weekend and they'd take Wednesday off without pay and collect their eighty percent for Thursday and Friday.

Really dumb management. No understanding of human nature.

******************************

Crap I just saw this now and noticed I screwed up my description.

No, if you're on the interstate with multiple lanes, and you're driving in the passing lane, and there's somebody behind you driving faster, I think it's common driving etiquette to pull to the RIGHT LANE and let him pass.

I noticed nobody does this in Colorado, similar to NY. In other words, it's common for me to get stuck behind somebody driving 45 fucking miles an hour in the goddamned passing lane where the speed limit is 75, and hope in vain he sees me blinking my lights and pulls over to the right, just like every goddamned driver does in every goddamned state except apparently this one (and New York). I've seen that here in California. Driving back from, e.g., Arizona, it's apparent that the problem only arises in the more densely traveled coastal areas. Thirty miles from the coast, no problem.

Your theory would fail, thusly.

Pit any random 1,000 U.S. Army Combat Arms troops, against a like number of the most Elite of the Female MMA sorority.

The win/loss ratio won't favor the MMA ladies.

Now, if you pit a like number of 1,000 U.S. Army cooks.... maybe a draw?

Weight, bulk and strength, still favor the unskilled, against all but the most highly skilled, lesser opponent.

We think of a 200 lb. Army cook, as a slow, lumbering dolt of a Shrek.

In reality, that 200 lb. Army cook has unbelievable stamina, as anyone who has worked in a commercial kitchen would know.

Those 50 lb. bags of flour, sugar, beans and rice, don't throw themselves, you know.

And the twelve hour days to feed the troops? Nah, no high-effort workload there, either.

I have to grant that I-80 in Ohio has the best service plazas ever. Never too far apart, clean bathrooms, food court with maybe 4 restaurants (with names you've actually heard of), gas stations, car washes, even a little info desk and a gift shop. All the other states I've been through (if they have more than just a parking lot with some sad-looking charcoal grills) have shacks with flickering lights, a vending machine, a coffee machine that doesn't work, and dim bathrooms that you expect Barney Frank to be loitering in trying to look inconspicuous.

The thing is, suicide is not a major social problem. It's a tragedy for the family, of course, but not for society at large. Gang bangers blasting all and sundry, however, ARE a major social problem. But gun control legislation has surprisingly little impact on people who are happy to murder other people because they're wearing the wrong color clothes.

511 I would expect most people who live in NJ don't like having someone else pump their gas for them-except maybe a few women who don't like to do it-and of course people doing what you said are obnoxious-whatever state they've come from. I'm from NJ and I don't do that. I've been in other states where other drivers have.

I had a friend visit from the Chicago area. I was taking her and her daughter down to the jersey shore. We stopped for gas, I shut the car off and just sat there. My friend asks me what the hell I'm doing. Just then a dude comes up to the window, I tell him to fill it, and then I turn to her and said, its jersey, we got servants here. lol

I would rather pump my own gas though.

My favorite is clowns talking about how people in California don't know how to drive in rain/snow.

Ninety percent of the assholes here recently CAME from the Northeast or upper Midwest, where rain/snow is the norm. Did they forget how to drive in them when they crossed the state line? Then maybe with luck they'll remember again when they cross back over, going home.

529 Well, the drought and its spawn, the wildfires, have conspired with the "atmospheric rivers" to create some truly shitty situations out here in California. We have a little cabin in the Big Sur area in the lower Palo Colorado canyon. If you remember the Soberanes fire that burned for 3+ months last summer, all of the 57 homes burned were in the upper PC canyon. Being in the lower canyon, our property was unaffected by the fire, however the fire lines did come within 1,000 ft. of the cabin.

Now the little Palo Colorado Creek that runs about 20' from our cabin is a raging, muddy monster due to runoff from the burn scar. It's taken out the road and bridges in several locations and only threatens to get worse as a new storm is brewing for Fri-Sat.

Don't know how our cabin, or our footbridge from the road to the cabin has fared because we haven't been down there since the storms started. I probably won't be able to get down there for at least a week.

While I'm concerned about our property, naturally, I'm more concerned about the people further up in the canyon, many of them trying to rebuild after the fire, now completely cut off due to road washouts and downed utility lines.

Of course, there are elevated risks living in the mountains, but this one-two punch could have hardly been anticipated. Also, plenty of people in CA and elsewhere in the country have been devastated by the wild weather this winter, probably some members of the Horde...

This global warming sucks

Anyway, prayers appreciated for some meteorologic mitigation, and for those having to dry out, dig out, and rebuild.

I had to drive on 295 last Sunday evening about 8:00/ It was n nightmare. I am not really familiar with the road from where I was coming from and it was impossible to get into the right lane because there were two many cars. I was going 65. The guys on the right wouldn't let me in and the idiots behind me on the left were cutting in front of me with only a car length behind them. It is one of those times when I have prayed continually to make it home alive. Another place I do that is one 78. I think my car has pickup problems because i couldn't seem to go any faster than 65. So i wasn't purposefully trying to annoy people. That's just the way it was. ;^)

Blocking is their job, and they're measured by their performance at that.Same thing with pitchers. No one bitches out a pitcher for having a low batting average. Hitting isn't their job. Pitching is. No argument here. I mean, if you're physically incapable of doing the job, or capable but out of shape and lazy, then yeah, you shouldn't be in that job. If you can? Have at it.

I think my broader point that I've been trying to get across, without being articulate enough to express it properly, is if she can't do that job, well maybe she'd make a killer QM or IT or something. If she can, I don't see any reason to exclude her. Yeah, here in the US Robbie was a flash in the pan, but in the UK he's an all-time superstar.

Another good example is Lulu. She only had one or two hits here in the US, but in the UK she's still a yuge draw. Sort of the British Cher.

If the painted parts are metal or wood, methylene chloride is the answer. If plastic, caustic soda.

Found the big rust hole. It is in the top of the left rear wheel well, and looks like it might have been caused by something corrosive soaked into the carpet. It will be an easy fix.

I accidentally listened to some FM "rock" radio playing in the shop here in Southern Ontario on the day after the defeat of Hillary Clinton, who will never be President of the United States, and it was the same sort of unhinged baffled insanity that one would expect of NPR, Olberfucknuts, and Evan McMullin.

The gabbling shitf*ck faux-DJ polluted the airwaves in a near-apoplexic state, baffled that the Divine Right of Clinton was not allowed to perpetuate on this green Earth.

I laughed, and laughed again as some ignorant dumbass in the shop whined about the electoral vote.

Yes, fucknuts, elections in many democracies are not founded on simple majorities.

If any Canadian in your acquaintance smirks, as is their wont, about the American President not having received more than 50% of the popular vote, remind said ignorant shitstain that their beloved halfwit homunculus Trudeau Jr. carried 51% of the Parliamentary seats with less than 39% of the popular vote, so who's the Fucking Undemocratic Fascist now, thank you very much.

We have a new shower pan that is bigger than our old shower, and we've already removed the offending tub, so today I framed in the new shower pan and moved the water lines. Harrumph. This level of factual idiocy is why I quit the space program.

The Interntional Space Station (ISS) is in what is commonly referred as a Low Earth Orbit (LOE). It orbits with perigee of 249 mi, apogee of 255 mi. The average speed is around 17,200 mph.

Math. Numbers matter, if people live.

Yeah, but the earth, in order to orbit the sun in 365 days every year must be traveling at close to 20, 000 miles per hour. That's math, too.

So why doesn't it run into the space station? Answer me that smarty pants.

Hire Maduro as consultant. California fits the Venezuelan model of moving from wealth to poverty brought on by hubris. The Norks have poverty exacerbated by batshit insanity,

674 Wrong about the speed. Here we go:

The full path of the Earth's orbit is close to 600 million miles (970 million km). To go around this immense circle in one year takes a speed of 66,000 miles per hour (107,000 km/hr).

So why, Mr. Math and Engineering Guy, when you travel through a school zone, isn't the speed limit 66, 015 miles per hour?

692 Some idiot on our neighborhood news was blathering about the deportations and wonders of diversity. Then goes on to brag the 65 languages are spoken on her daughters school.

1. Her daughters school sucks, largely because of illegal immigration and everybody knows it. Anybody that can is fleeing it, as well as the surrounding schools that suck for the same reason.

2. How many of those 65 languages has your daughter learned to enrich her life? I absolutely certain none. And a couple simple phrases like "Hello" and "My name is..." do not count. Oh, I guarantee those students that speak all those wonderful foreign languages will be receiving admission and hiring preferences over your daughter. But yeah, benefits of diversity...

I know he's not that popular around here, but Ben Shapiro has some pretty good videos on how to refute this nonsense. In one he's arguing with a college student, and asks her, "How old are you? 20? Why can't you identify as being 60 years old?" She had no clue as how to respond.
