MSM Steps On A Rake. Again.

Trump media clowns.jpg

Here is what Trump said:

"Here's the bottom line, we've got to keep our country safe," Trump said at his rally Saturday. "You look at what's happening in Germany, you look at what's happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this. Sweden. They took in large numbers. They're having problems like they never thought possible."

So, what did the MSM do with this?

What they did was focus like a laser on the phrase "what's happening last night in Sweden" and ran with it. In their blind zeal to come up with a "gotcha" moment, they looked for one specific incident that happened the night before in Sweden, couldn't find anything, and then started crowing about how Trump doesn't know what he's talking about, is making stuff up, and is a idiot.

Normal people with normal language comprehension skills don't do this. Normal people would figure that if nothing specific happened in Sweden, then Trump probably meant something different, something a bit more general, and in any event, I shouldn't let my expectations dictate how Trump's words should be understood.

This is how normal people behave. But we're not talking about normal people, we're talking about the MSM, which consists of "27-year olds who know nothing" (according to Obama advisor Ben Rhodes).

As it turned out, Trump did have something specific in mind:

Here's the clip he's referring to:

The MSM would do a better job with Trump if they took a cue from voters who took him seriously but not literally, instead of literally but not seriously, which is how the MSM insists on playing it:

The public -- also known as "customers" of for-profit news outlets -- sees Trump's words differently than journalists do. They, or at least the members of his winning electoral coalition, see Trump not as a politician but as a businessman. They know, and even value, the fact that his words have not passed through a gauntlet of spinners, prose smoothers, and fact-checkers.

They may have met other real estate professionals in their own lives and they know better than to take the words of ad hoc marketing seriously. These supporters are not giving Trump a benefit of the doubt. They recognize his professional DNA,and journalists are overdue to recognize this discernment by their own audiences.

Which is why they continue stepping on the rake.

So, the result of the latest brouhaha is more winning:

1. The massive problems caused by immigrants in Sweden is now being talked about openly, whereas in the past, the MSM were sympatico with the preferences of the Swedish government, i.e. ignore it.

2. In their rush to find something to hit Trump with, the MSM have kind of boxed themselves in having to defend the proposition that everything in Sweden is just peachy-keen, ducky, and smells like roses. Because if they don't take that line, then they're in effect agreeing with what he said at the Florida rally, which destroys the whole "gotcha" moment they were trying to trap him with.

3. Once again, everyone can see what a pathetic bunch of clowns the MSM are.

And again I wonder if this somehow PDT is doing this on purpose.

And OM, I don't think there's a chance this is some sort of intentional 13-dimensional chess by Trump. As noted in the rest of your excellent post, he just talks this way.

Having spend a lot of my life actively participating in the Beltway word-parsing and word-crafting and message obsession and seeing the appallingly poor communication skills of most public figures, I can't stop laughing at Trump's delivery and style.

Laughing because it's so refreshing, it's (largely) so effective, and because it's so honest. "Honest" seems like a strange description, but it's true. Even when Trump is wrong about some nit or factoid - or even a bigger policy question - it's usually pretty clear it's what he really, actually thinks.

No packaging (exaggeration or showmanship, but that's different). Just what he thinks. This still penetrates the indifference, cynicism, or programmed but shallow hostility of many Americans. I think it will continue to do so.

Yeah, it's possible. He certainly knows how to play the media.

But at this point I think the main thing is that he's just found a bunch of politically-winning issues, and he talks about them as much as possible. And from there, it doesn't really matter what the media does. As long as they're talking about the issues that Trump wants to talk about, he'll be fine.

Chris ... I think it's simpler, on a certain level ... than that.

Trump thinks he's right.

See ... if you're right - things kind of explain themselves. When I'm right at work - which is early and often - I'm not scared to say "We should do it like this and if we don't then this bad thing will happen ... but by all means, knock yourselves out."

I can be like that because either You Listen to Me and Learn I'm Right ... or You Don't Listen to Me and Learn I'm Right.

I don't have to convince you. Events will prove me right either way. So fuck pursuading you. Life will pursuade you. Either by how you prosper or how you suffer.

I think Trump sees shit the same way. And for all their gumb-bumping ... I don't think Traditional Republicans ever have.

46 C Taylor, completely unaware of the shift you refer to.

The winning will come with results. One more thing Trump tapped directly into - people are sick of or unimpressed with words (esp. people who see the country has sliding quickly downhill in important ways). They want actions and results.

Trump himself is not a word guy, but a results guy, by nature and background.

The winning is fine for the moment, with the exception of the judicial coup that is in its second week, with no action from the administration, and not even a word from the AG, who appears to have been kidnapped and is being held in an undisclosed location.

82 49 Sometimes a culture seemingly just wants to die. Does Sweden even want to save itself?

Either way ... the very worst most God awful thing we can possibly do ...

... is run in and save them.

Because we've spent way too much national time and treasure preventing comfortable people here from seeing the fruits of their piss-poor damn decisions on the six o'clock news.

Yes ... seeing Muslims running through the streets of Stockholm raping pretty blue-eyed, straight blonde haired women would be an ugly sight. Doesn't pair well with anything made in the Green Egg on the patio.

Yet ... exactly what ought to be seen. Every evening for a while. Maybe mix it up with the skirmishes in the No-Go zones in Paris - just for a little variety.

There's a Swedish show called Wallander that surprisingly gives some insight to the Swedish mindset on racism. There was one episode where a few migrants killed a Swedish woman, yet Wallander (the detective) was unable to count them as suspects, because the very idea of even thinking a migrant could do something untoward was bigoted and racist, and it crippled his ability to do his job. It took the entire episode for him to overcome his fears of being racist and let the evidence dictate his investigation, resulting in arresting the guilty parties (hint: they were migrants after all).

Terry Pratchett talks a little about that mindset in 'Jingo'. Sam Vimes *knows* that all of the evidence that the crime was committed by a Klatchian foreigner is planted in order to make the Klatchians look bad.

Ironically, it turns out that he's right. A Klatchian special agent found out that his government was up to no good (but using locals to do the dirty work), and adjusted the evidence as necessary in a (failed) attempt to get Vimes to identify the Klatchians as the bad guys.

Posted by: josephistan at February 20, 2017 07:41 PM (ANIFC)

I don't think they're trying to make up for anything, it's more cultural. There's an old word and concept "lagom" which roughly translates to "enough", "sufficient", or "in proper measure". Having a big house or a fancy car e.g. is not in their nature. Instead of "I earned this, I deserve extravagance", Swedish culture is more inclined to "I have enough, why would I need all that?". They don't envy their neighbors for having expensive stuff, they think it's tacky and greedy.

So when they have all they need, and "impoverished refugees" show up, lagom says "we're not using it, they need it more".

150 At root, all caused by the failure to fill the void left by the demise of the State churches in Northwestern Europe - the Lutherans, the Anglicans to some degree.

Well ... yeah.

Mind you - I'm not a religious guy. Not anti-religion ... but certainly not as pro as most here.

But I've always said this ... and I've heard it echoed somewhat here by some ... but I'll boil it down to an ugly, lowest common-denominator as is my wont ...

MOST PEOPLE ARE SIMPLE SHEEP WITH A HOLE IN THEIR SOUL LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TELL THEM WHAT TO DO TO FILL IT !!!

Knowing that - Religion is a pretty decent way to occupy their time. Does some harm - but way more good.

I'm in an honest, foul mood.

282 Every one on earth would be willing to pay more per channel -- a lot more -- to get only what they want. I guarantee it. If my cable bill was unchanged but I only got the 10-15 channels the household actually watches instead of the 600 we don't? We would call that a win.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 20, 2017 08:06 PM (39g3+)

Just put the whole cable universe onto a pay-per-view basis. You could watch any channel free, for five minutes, to see if you wanted to watch it through, in which case, you'd punch an "agree to pay" button, and the cableco would bill your credit card. If you wanted to bail out of a program, just punch the "I'm done with this" button, and they would refund you the unused balance of the program fee.

287 It doesn't matter what Trump says or tries to communicate, they will always find something wrong or talk about Russian ties. They just can't understand why he isn't backing down like regular Republicans, it is un-nerving to them.

Posted by: Africanis at February 20, 2017 11:09 PM (+2Gki)

288 Trump leaves them breadcrumbs to follow which lead them into the light which exposes them for what they are and forces them to talk about things which have been hidden.

The media's main power is to not cover things. He is destroying that.

Posted by: geoffb5 at February 21, 2017 12:33 AM (d3wbb)

289 It's on purpose. Strategic carelessness is a thing. If you know that a trend is in a certain direction, then you don't need to look up the specifics; even better if you don't. if you don't want men in dresses in locker rooms with little girls, just say something like "Trannies are a hundred times more likely to be sex offenders!" Then the preening peacocks in the press will be all "Aha! Gotcha! Trannies are only ten times as likely to be sex offenders!"

What they imagine their audience is thinking: "Holy isht! SciVo is a liar!" What they're actually thinking: "Holy isht! Trannies are rapey!"

P. S. I'm pretty sure that someone right now is grinding her teeth over how if she plays a gotcha over how it's really just x.y times, then she'll be playing right into my hands.
