Trump Names New NSA, and It's Not Bolton. Sad!

I wanted to get this up fast. I will add what little I know about McMasters as I look it up on the Google machine.

44 Here is a pretty good insight on who General McMaster is via one of the military blogs I watch:

http://www.armywtfmoments.com/2017/02/20/ltg-mcmaster-up-for-national-security-adviser/

Additionally, he most known for his exploits in the Battle of 73rd Easting, where his Company engages and destroyed the majority of an Iraqi Brigade (an organization which is *vastly* larger than a Company).

Here is probably my favorite excerpt from the official report on the battle he made:
Lieutenant Gifford called me from the command post to
remind me that the 70 easting was the limit of advance. We
were already beyond it. I told him, "I can't stop. We're
still in contact. Tell them I'm sorry."

The full version can be found here: http://www.benning.army.mil/Library/content/McMasterHR%20CPT_Battleof73Easting.pdf

Pro
- Battle of 73 Easting
- His book Dereliction of Duty is credited with pissing off enough people that it almost ended his career.
- He's a forward thinker, militarily speaking.

Con
- He likes social soirees. I've heard that when he was the Commanding General at Fort Benning that his social budget, e.g. parties at Riverside (the CG's house), was much larger than any CG before or since.
- One of the guys I worked with considered him to be a "booksmart fucktard".

Posted by: fixerupper at February 20, 2017 03:10 PM (8XRCm)

87 NSC staff is mostly career govt. types on rotational detail from various agencies - has always been thus.

The "bosses" are political appointees - usually - with titles like "director" and "senior director" etc. (though those can also be career people).

I think the degree to which the NSC staff is drawn from the specific choices of an NSA varies with each crew. But it's always a mix.

I don't think this WH, or McMaster, for example, will have too many former campaign office drivers, or obscure English majors with no background, in senior positions of responsibility.

The degradation of the country and its most important institutions the last 8 years still astonishes, and the contrast will only become more stark with each passing day (in'shallah).

Yeah? Come over here and say that.

Posted by: Bobby Knight, Billy Carter, Billy D Williams, Billy Jack, Bobby Unser at February 20, 2017 03:11 PM (JO9+V)

92 McMaster has been banging the drum for a long while now -- quite correctly -- to the effect that the services in general and the Army in particular have become way too accustomed to counterinsurgency fights against irregulars. To where it dominates TRADOC.

And that unit competence and institutional memory in how to fight big maneuver battles against peer adversaries has perforce decayed and must be restored. Otherwise, he says, there's going to be a butcher's bill to be paid when those sorts of battles again occur.

109 Can any military general translate smoothly into being an effective advisor for national security?
------------------------------

I would think so, especially if you pair them up with a political adviser who is an expert on foreign affairs.

History is more than names and dates. It should also be about why those events happened the way they did. And now there are domestic political forces that have to be factored in when discussing national security. If we didn't learn that from Vietnam, then we didn't learn anything.

117 Recall that every NSA has a different function, weight, or impact in different administrations.

We have no idea if Trump will have an NSA-centric administration when it comes to foreign policy and defense, or one where DOD and State dominate their respective spheres.

Strong NSAs are mostly the exception since the post was created.

So it's pretty hard even to speculate intelligently on any NSA pick because we still don't know how which "model" will evolve or be chosen in this administration.

129 @81 (from my recollection) McMaster got passed over on his first look to BG (and I think he was going to retire), and then did not get the assignment he needed to make that promotion happen afterward. Petraeus came back from the CENTCOM AO to personally oversee the promotion board with the implication that it was to ensure McMaster was picked up for a star. He was.

McMaster is as I said mavericky and made the right enemies in the establishment. It is canon in the military that we actually won in Viet Nam, it was just hte politicians who screwed it up. McMaster's book Dereliction of Duty says, well not so fast, the military, and especially the Joint Chiefs, surely had a hand in our loss.

Now, why criticism of 4 stars in 66-70 would rankle 4 stars in 2005 is a good question, but establishments gotta establish, I guess. This is a quote from wikipedia:

...it is generally agreed that McMaster was held back because of his tendency to argue against the status quo.

Anybody who thinks McMaster is just book learned is talking out of their ass.

130 Off-topic, and per sidebar: Much as Ace surmises, writing only what you already know is limiting, and the best writers have always been willing to expand their areas of research. You have to write *who* you know, maybe, but *what* is possible to fix.

Dorothy Sayers was a good example of this, as she routinely researched things to the point of becoming an expert in a field (!) before writing a book covering that topic. Her mystery The Nine Tailors featured enough research into classical English bell-ringing that she was immediately among the leading dozen experts in the world, and that's even discounting her research on low-country canals and drainage for the same book.

Another example of already knowing "who" and researching "what" is Dick Francis, who always wrote about horse racing or breeding... with a twist. Horses, but now with glass-blowing. Horses, but now with ham radio. Horses, but now with private planes in the Keys. All meticulously researched, and with the *people* he knew - horse people from thugs to "toffs" populating the plot.

I guess what I'm saying is, some things are worth researching because they're rad, and writing about them works if you're interested.

151 McMaster has been banging the drum for a long while now -- quite correctly -- to the effect that the services in general and the Army in particular have become way too accustomed to counterinsurgency fights against irregulars. To where it dominates TRADOC.

And that unit competence and institutional memory in how to fight big maneuver battles against peer adversaries has perforce decayed and must be restored. Otherwise, he says, there's going to be a butcher's bill to be paid when those sorts of battles again occur.

He's been a steady persistent critic of current dot-mil thinking in other areas, too. He hasn't made a lot of friends in the flag ranks with his efforts, and his uniformed career was probably capped around the level he was at, so moving laterally into civilian-suited natsec makes sense.

176 RE: the side bar about writing.

They say "write what you know" which is good advice overall, but like all simple advice it only goes so far and has a lot of exceptions. I wrote a book about Werewolves and WW2, neither of which I can really know. Werewolves don't exist and while I can research my way into some level of knowledge of WW2, I have not served in any armed forces, am too young to have lived through the time period, and have never been to Europe.

Writers of science fiction and fantasy necessarily have to write what they do not "know" in any conventional sense; they're making it all up as the go along -- within certain boundaries of plausibility and reality.

Yet even a romance or crime writer has to write what they do not "know" in the sense of being a serial killer or falling in love with a super-rich BDSM fancier of elegant dinners.

And when it comes down to it "write what you know" is not so much about experiences or a collection of facts, but rather what an author understands and can properly express or pass on to the reader. You may not know enough about Chinese basketweaving to teach a master's class on the subject, but you can know enough about human nature, Chinese worldview, and interaction between people to write about it.

McMaster asserts that while counterterror and counterinsurgency missions are obviously necessary, ways have to be found to conduct them that don't needlessly exhaust and distort the force.

This is true not only with regard to his prior professional specialty in armor. My own example would be the habit of using B-1 and B-2 bombers to conduct strikes on Islamic State "bases" which are often little more than small clusters of foxholes. Not only using them, but using them up.

Irreplaceable intercontinental strategic air assets, meant for nuclear deterrence, enormously costly both to acquire and to operate per flight-hour, having the wings flown off of them for tactical ordnance delivery that a dirt cheap turboprop or drone could easily do in their stead.

(It's not as though the Islamic State has an air force of its own, or an integrated air defense network through which only a stealth bomber can slip.)

I didn't realize that they have been ignoring preparing our regulars for future conflicts against adversary Countries. I thought they continued to provide that training but transferred most of the responsibity to fighting irregular warfare to the various special forces.
------------------

The regulars got roped into it (by necessity) during Afghanistan and Iraq. Things like IED-resistant MRAPs are useful for counterinsurgency. They're not so useful if we have to defend an ally against an aggressive neighbor.

Or to put it in terms relating to a discussion I had elsewhere not too long ago...

I was on the forums for Battlefront, a company that makes 15mm miniatures for various 20th Century conflicts. The M113 ACAV is a very handy variant to have in Battlefront's Vietnam game. But it doesn't exist in their hypothetical 1985 Cold War goes hot game. The reason for that is while the M113 ACAV was great against Vietnamese insurgents (bulletproof with lots of .50 cals against foot sloggers with AKs and some RPGs), it would have been a target if fighting had broken out with the Warsaw Pact in Europe. A BMP would be nearly invulnerable to it, and would have no trouble killing it.

The current military has a lot of modern equivalents to the M113 ACAV. Given how the War on Terror has changed, we need to make sure that stuff is phased out and replaced with equipment that will be more useful against conventional armies that we might face in the future.

Oh, you mean like hollowing out the B-52 force over Hanoi?

I agree in concept with what you're saying. My take would be that you do it just enough to give the crews some real-world training (or as you can manage) but you don't wear the crews or equipment out doing it.

We have a military which, though capable, is ruinously expensive to run.

Governor Hickenlooper's neighborhood of Park Hill is littered with them. Same for Capital Hill and Congress Park and every other 'hood in town where the housing prices begin at $500k and go to $2mil and higher.

Meanwhile, the judicial coup continues into its second week, admissions to the country that were reasonably suggested to be suspended by the intel agencies responsible for evaluating the risk of such admissions continue, on the "authority" of an obscure district judge who cited no legal or constitutional grounds or even rationale for his order.

A blueprint - if not completely rebuked - for theoretically infinite and pernicious judicial lawlessness that could vitiate much of the good the new administration might accomplish in years to come.

I don't find anything funny or edgy about that. Just creepy.

I haven't seen the segment. But based on his explanation/apology and what others have said, it appears to have been some edgy jokes at his own expense (he was molested as a teenager), combined with some gay slang that sounds bad in the non-gay community.

253 Look I'm for edgy humor but joking about boinking kids? Even teenage kids?

It has to do with how British humor works; they joke about awful stuff because its awful. Its a way of dealing with it -- he was molested as a kid. But he went too far and it didn't work. That's why he apologized:

"I'm partly to blame. My own experiences as a victim led me to believe I could say anything I wanted to on this subject, no matter how outrageous. But I understand that my usual blend of British sarcasm, provocation and gallows humor might have come across as flippancy, a lack of care for other victims or, worse, "advocacy." I deeply regret that. People deal with things from their past in different ways.
As to some of the specific claims being made, sometimes things tumble out of your mouth on these long, late-night live-streams, when everyone is spit-balling, that are incompletely expressed or not what you intended. Nonetheless, I've reviewed the tapes that appeared last night in their proper full context and I don't believe they say what is being reported."

254 Milo was doing his usual British humor/pushing the envelope thing and went too far about having sex with underage kids as young as 13. He apologized and explained it but that's all the left will bring up from now until the end of time about Milo, to attempt to discredit what he says.

--

I used to work for the local Fox affiliate. I lost my job due to automation. In fact, I'd say that in the past 7 years, the station has reduced about 1/3 of their technical staff, probably more.

They are trying with every breath they take to automate as many humans away as possible. They are consolidating things so that instead of having three humans in 50 cities working an 8 hour shift, they will have three humans in ONE city handling all 50 cities. They are in the process of doing that now in what's called master control. Right there you've lost 147 high paying jobs. Then add in automated teleprompters, and fully automated cameras (each camera used to have a person, now one person operates many cameras robotically) you're talking hundreds of jobs nationwide in local tv news.

IMHO, people need work to feel good about themselves. If we allow industry to take all work away, what will happen to society? Will we be turned into a planet of anti-depressant taking losers who spend all of their days playing video games and masturbating?

There were similar concerns about what people would do when it looked like farmers were going to start using large tools and machines to harvest and plant instead of a bevy of people.

Very few people were predicting that there would be a large movement to industrial jobs at the time, and yet it still happened.

This doesn't mean that there's a guaranteed new horizon where most workers will go, but history does provide examples where there was large displacement of the working class, and they migrated to something else.

I think CPAC and--to a lesser extent--Breitbart are just uncomfortable with someone like Milo and are looking for an excuse to shut him out. Personally, I think he's good at taking it to the bad guys on their turf--something most of the CPAC crowd are evidently incapable of doing.

432 And now we Trump who while he has some conservative positions is a populist and most here seem just fine with that.

For me that's never been true.

I have never been a hardcore RedState anti-abortion type. It's an evil, but the extension of Federal authority to ban it utterly would be a greater evil. It's a state issue.

I support free trade but have never been a hardcore free-trader. Free trade is a basis for a trade policy but you cannot have free trade with countries that do not trade freely and float their currencies freely themselves.

I regard civil asset forfeiture absent a criminal conviction as a clear Fourth Amendment violation, and am concerned about AG Sessions' stand on this, but you cannot have everything and before I'd throw him under the bus you'd have to show me someone likely to be as strong on voter integrity and generally cleaning DOJ house as he's likely to be.

And the whole range of putative head-choppers Trump has nominated - Pruitt, Perry, DeVos, etc. - are a wet dream compared to what we could have expected from any other GOP nominee save maybe Cruz or Walker.

I place not my trust in princes, even when they own big comfortable hotels, but I'm also not willing to let the perfect be the enemy of the good enough.

Proper infrastructure -- that is, the stuff we need to function as a nation between states -- is constitutional and righteous government spending. The only reason its so huge a bill is because the last, oh, 10 presidents more or less blew it off.

466 Or in other words, true conservatism is about stopping the fucking social entitlement spending bullshit and shifting that to rebuilding our roads and bridges instead.

Back in the '50s and '60s infrastructure and defense was a huge (okay, yuge) driver of the middle-class.

You can pine all you want for the Coolidge approach, but the world we live in has little in common with that era.

The problem isn't infrastructure per se, it's the corruption of the processes (too much money going to contract managers documenting multi-gender honey-huts on site and the appropriate gender distribution of machinists, not enough to people on the line) and the Federal debt.

You could argue that unions have been a factor as well but they've ALWAYS been a problem in the industrial era, and my guess is Trump can co-opt them better than anyone else.

There's also a difference about where the funding is coming from.

If a state like, say, New York wants to spend a bunch of money to build a canal, then there's really nothing wrong with it. They did, and they still use the Erie canal 200 years later. They funded it intelligently and prudently, managed it well, and delivered a useful result, all without any funds from any other state.

I see that as fine. The New York state constitution, apparently, provided for the authority to take on such projects.

The federal government's enumerated powers in terms of internal improvements are very narrow, though. Postal roads, and an implied power to enhance interstate commerce. I'm kind of a purist and feel that that's going a bit far, but I understand if people disagree.

The Navy is allowed to wear only their top 3 ribbons on the daily service uniform which I always thought was strange. It is your resume and service record book and while some medals and ribbons mean less than others, you should display what you have been awarded.

McMasters seems like a fairly solid choice, I know very little about him, just his wikipedia entry and his book. It definitely pointed to the folly of containment as a strategy because it hamstrung a bunch of talented officers from executing an actual plan to defeat the North Vietnamese and the Vietcong. In Iraq, there was a system of thinking that became known as Effects based operations which rather than being a mere datapoint to the completion of operational objectives, instead became their own operational metrics.

In layman terms, if the tanks had to be killed before I could roll on an objective. The focus became, just killing the tanks, the actual objective got lost in the fog. General Mattis finally rid us of that horrid manner of waging war when he was at Joint Forces Command.

Not exactly. I have yet to see a leftist group that disavows pedophilia. It's why schools want to provide sex education to kindergartenders, and have 'try on homosexuality" days in middle schools. So revoking Milo's invite due to his video statements about under age sex partners should put him up a few points in the leftist column.

I appreciate the explanations and link postings in the last threads so I understand more about Milo.

However, he probably doesn't understand the discomfort his last couple of sentences cause to those of us who aren't homosexual lifestyle cheerleaders.

If I had a 16-17 year old at home, who was confused regarding his sexuality, I'm sorry, I am not eager to have some 35 year old queen with a variety of STD's and possibly drug addicitons, take him "under his wing" to introduce him to the gay lifestyle so he feels "better" about himself.
That older gay man is not interested in a relationship, he is interested in free , in his prime, sex with a perpetually aroused and stupid kid, who is going to end up further screwed up. It's no different than a 35 year old woman with a 17 year old HS boy. There is almost zero chance there is any kind of intellectual or even experience creating a bond in that relationship.

And Milo trying to excuse it as it being a good thing just wiped out all his cries of hating pedophilia.

Again, he has a right to his opinion, but I also have a right to feel his opinion is not one I want to endorse.

I heard the other day (and I don't remember where, but I think Hannity said this on his show) that you're right--Trump isn't always articulate. He talks (and I'm paraphrasing heavily, but you'll get the idea) the way a top NYC real estate business executive does at work, who is very busy and has very little time to explain every detail to everybody in the room, and has surrounded himself with people who don't need him to.
And I think that's probably right.
Trump alternates between that and talking like you would to your family in the living room. And people get that. He doesn't need to be Ronald Reagan to tell me there's too much illegal immigration, too much crime, and too many jobs being sent overseas. I understand him fine.

Posted by: blaster at February 20, 2017 03:20 PM (HV1LS)

Having hand in our loss largely because the Joint Chiefs were unable to get over their inter-service rivalries and so unable to put together a unified plan, much less a coherent one. He names McNamara & The Quantifiers as being in charge because, well, because there was no one else, with the Joint Chiefs continually battling among themselves. Gen. MacMaster was not particularly gentle about it, either.

510 Legitimate question:

Can any military general translate smoothly into being an effective advisor for national security?

Posted by: John Nada at February 20, 2017 03:10 PM (Rupsx)

Absolutely,They have mastered the arts of Courntey Masengil and will kiss the bosses ass to the ends of the world while demanding that those below them will kiss theirs, the original human centipede, interior segment. If you want a yes man you can never go wrong with an accomplished officer (not they they are all yes men, but can be among the very best if that is the requirement).

Posted by: Burnt Toast at February 20, 2017 05:19 PM (P/kVC)

511 McMaster's is a genius level flag officer who tells it like it is. He is another deep thinker, but also an operational sound doer. His main flaw is really threatening the go-along to get-along FOGO political animal.

He was masterful in combat, but was passed over several times for promotion. His brilliance led Gen. Petraeus to go to Washington from the Middle East to sit on a promotion board to ensure he was selected for general officer.

This selection is on par with Mattis as Sec Def.

515 85 Legitimate question:

Can any military general translate smoothly into being an effective advisor for national security?

Posted by: John Nada at February 20, 2017 03:10 PM (Rupsx)

Depends on the general. The NSC advisor's job is to coordinate the interagency process to give the best advice possible to the President. If he has good bureaucratic leadership and good executive/critical analysis skills, should be no problem. McMaster has a critical eye for bullshit, and people forget that the Army is also a bureaucracy, albeit a more mission-oriented one than most. Should be OK for him.

Also, he's not going to come up with the lowest-common-denominator, consensus solution. He will force the staff to produce quality. Nor will he allow them to do the standard Option-A nuclear annihilation, Option-B abject surrender, staff recommends Option-C bullshit.

Posted by: Hurricane LaFawnduh at February 20, 2017 08:10 PM (laMCB)

516 Let me say that LTG McMaster is a true warrior statesman. He is one of those rare strategists who has repeatedly proven his ability to "walk the talk". He will not roll over for anyone. If you need any elaboration read McMaster's Phd. thesis turned NYT Bestseller "Dereliction of Duty" where he excoriates the Joint Chiefs of Staff for their failure to stand up to Johnson/ McNamara, thus allowing for the great expansion of the war in Vietnam.

He is a true intellect of the first order, one of only three I've ever met. His character and commitment to give the POTUS the very best strategic guidance regardless of politics makes him a superb choice.

By way of explanation I served as one of his scout platoon leaders at the 73 Easting and again under 3d ACR (OPCON) in Tal Afar, Iraq as a Squadron S3. HR is the same gifted and morally grounded and person I've known for 27 years.

Posted by: Timothy Gauthier at February 21, 2017 12:50 AM (/OQQ9)

517 Then COL McMaster was my commander in 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment when we pacified Tal Afar, Iraq. He is an excellent choice for the job. Smart as hell.

518 Mr. Gauthier:

Remarkable to see you post here, sir. I came across your name just this morning, reading LTG McMaster's
article "Eagle Troop at the Battle of 73 Easting."

http://tinyurl.com/jqf8pxq

My hat is off to you, to Mr. James, and to several others here. I don't know the general but I was excited to read of this choice.
