Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a giant food fight. Unless you've just gone off your diet.
“In a gambit you give up a Pawn for the sake of getting a lost game”This is the story of my life in chess. At one time I thought I would like to be a gambit player, but every time I tried this or that gambit, I would somehow never be able to recover the pawn. Or I would fritter away whatever small positional advantage the theory said I supposedly had. So I would go into the endgame down a pawn, and then lose because, well, I was down a pawn. So enough of gambits. They do not suit my temperament.

4.Kd2 Bg6 So, White's king doesn't have time to get over there and stop the pawn. Is there anything else White can do to speed up the defense? Yes. He can advance the 'e' pawn to open up the diagonal for his bishop. 1...b4

3. Bc1 And the Black pawn is stymied. So, knowing all this. Is there a Black countermeasure for the White countermeasure, that will prevent him from advancing the 'e' pawn? Yes: 1...Be4! Given that 2.fxe4 will gum up things in the center pretty good, White should look at alternatives. 2.Bg7 followed by 3.d5 looks promising, but now the bishop is within the Black king's striking distance: 2.Bg7 Kf7
3.Bh8 Kg8 And White will lose the trapped bishop. So 2.Bg7 is no good. White's king is still out of range, so this still won't work, either: 2.Kf2 b4
3.Ke2 b3
4.Kd2 b2 So all that's left is taking the bishop: 2.fxe4 b4
3.d5 Kf7 As in the earlier line, this Move prevents Bg7 by White. Black's passed pawn is now unstoppable. Play might continue: 4.e5 b3

One of the reasons I voted Trump is because I actually believed him when he said he would keep his campaign promises, even when he contradicted himself. I don't know but out of 17 candidates he came across to me as eminently credible and sincere and passionate about saving our country.

I'm not a fan of the left-turn petrol head thingie, but I saw a really interesting documentary about it this morning. Called "Perfect Storm".
NASCAR was a regional thing and no one had ever shown a whole race wire to wire on the teevee. (You'd get good crashes on Wide World of Sports, I think).
Someone convinced CBS that it was a Thing and they should show the whole Daytona 500. The weekend that it happened was the blizzard of Feb 1979 when the entire East Coast was shut in. No one could go out, there were only three channels, and one of them had car crashes and fist fights.
Thus was born the modern era of NASCAR.

I like Bolton, but he is another one that seems to think that Russian's who have not shot at us for 30+ years, are more of a threat than people shooting at us right now.

Japan's entire reason for being at war was south and west. Japan wanted the various resources that were found in the nations in that direction. Going north would have just gotten the Japanese a lot of frozen wasteland.
So there wasn't much interest in going north from the Japanese point of view.

Heh! Gods caliber indeed! I saw one of the but it was more than I wanted to spend and bigger than what I'm looking for. I also an Armscor 1911 with a 3.5 inch barrel that was reasonably priced. The only drawback was the iron sights. I'd like Novaks with high contrast marks.

Right now we are bending so many of our own rules, or rules that we signed onto (like the Geneva Convention, the UN Treaty)... that we don't have as much moral high ground as we used to have.
When you are sending Military assets, to kill a non uniformed person, combatant or not, in a Neutral Nation... when they are not in the process of actively attacking us.. it can get legally and morally very sticky.

If you are praying that a loved one stops using drugs, how is God going to answer that prayer? Interfere with the free will of the one using drugs?
It seems to me that if there is a God who is allowing people to choose how to live their lives, then he has to have a hands off policy, at least on Earth, to allow those choices to be made. But, if you believe in fate, then his affecting things would be compatible with that belief.
