Sunday Overnight Open Thread (2/19/17) Bare Bones Edition

sunday night.jpg

Leave it to the NYT for a puff piece obituary. Poor mistreated Blind Sheikh Abdel Rahman passes on.

Mr. Abdel Rahman, who was known as the blind sheikh, spent years in the most severe solitary confinement, barred from communicating with his followers, praying with other Muslim prisoners or even listening to Arabic radio. Failing blood circulation due to diabetes had killed the sensation in his fingertips, making it impossible for him to read his Braille Islamic texts.

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"If we are serious about the fight against Islamism and terrorism, then it must also be a cultural struggle." — German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel.

Quote II

“But the Church will not deny that God created us male and female. We will not confuse respect and compassion with capitulation to a tragic delusion>Most Rev. James D. Conley Bishop of Lincoln, NE

Quote III

There’s only one faith, for example, that kills you or wants to kill you if you draw a bad cartoon of the prophet. There’s only one faith that kills you or wants to kill you if you renounce the faith... obviously, most Muslim people are not terrorists. But ask most Muslim people in the world, if you insult the prophet, do you have what’s coming to you? It’s more than just a fringe element.Bill Maher

Gutless Asswipes I Am Muslim Too demonstration in NYC.

Too bad they don't put their time and energy into fighting Islamic terrorism.

Three months after an Islamic terrorist attack on their campus. Thee Ohio State University is fighting “Islamophobia.”.

Months before the attacker, Addul Razak Ali Artan, plowed his car into a crowd of students before launching a knife attack, he’d complained in an interview with his student paper about the media’s portrayal of Muslims as terrorists.

Lucky him – he didn’t have to worry about being considered a terrorist at OSU, of all places. The Rebel’s Faith Goldy interviewed a number of students after the attack, none of whom would call the attack an act of terrorism. One student referred to the incident as “a misunderstanding.”

Self-driving car race ends about the way you thought.

But self-driving race cars are another matter, as was laid bare by the first ever driverless car race in Buenos Aires. Roborace, a nascent self-driving racing series, hosted the first test of the vehicles in a race format on a professional course this week, and things didn't go quite as planned.

While one of the two vehicles completed the race—albeit at far lower speeds than human-controlled Formula E racers typically reach—the runner-up didn’t even finish.

Bald Eagle feeding frenzy.

Not as "Big" as Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair or Rowdy Roddy. But still a star in his own right. RIP George 'The Animal' Steele.

On this day in history, February 19, 1847, The Donner Party is rescued.

News of the stranded Donner Party traveled fast to Sutter’s Fort, and a rescue party set out on January 31. Arriving at Donner Lake 20 days later, they found the camp completely snowbound and the surviving emigrants delirious with relief at their arrival. Rescuers fed the starving group as well as they could and then began evacuating them. Three more rescue parties arrived to help, but the return to Sutter’s Fort proved equally harrowing, and the last survivors didn’t reach safety until late April. Of the 89 original members of the Donner Party, only 45 reached California.

Have you ever quit smoking? Have you ever lost weight and kept it off? Fought the bottle and won the battle? If you have, did you have will power? Will power is a dangerous, old idea that needs to be scrapped.

Ignoring the idea of willpower will sound absurd to most patients and therapists, but, as a practicing addiction psychiatrist and an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry, I’ve become increasingly skeptical about the very concept of willpower, and concerned by the self-help obsession that surrounds it. Countless books and blogs offer ways to “boost self-control,” or even to “meditate your way to more willpower,” but what’s not widely recognized is that new research has shown some of the ideas underlying these messages to be inaccurate.

Were you around in the 70s? Did you watch quite a bit of television? If you were and you did perhaps you saw these commercials.

Care to offend a Euro-Wienie? Here's how to do it.

The ONT Musical Interlude

On this day in 1966, Nancy Sinatra held the UK No.1 single position with 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin' in the UK.

On this day,1980, AC/DC singer Bon Scott was pronounced dead on arrival at a London hospital after a heavy night's drinking. Scott was found in the passenger seat of a friend's parked car. The official coroner's report stated that he had "drunk himself to death", after suffocating on his own vomit. viathisdayinmusic.com

Constructive criticism or tonight's Genius Award Winner.

An interesting story. The ONT is not certain if this company has earned The Feel Good Story of The Day. You be the judge.

34 Will power is a dangerous, old idea that needs to be scrapped.

That's why the 3rd step in 12-step programs is to turn over one's will and life to the care of a higher power. Whether you believe in God or Gaia or whatever, or whether you believe that it's a real higher power or your own subconscious determination, a big part of those programs is eliminating self-will. Willpower can sometimes, for a time, prevent someone from acting on an impulse, but it doesn't eliminate it.

59 I tried skimming the "willpower" screed.

I'm not sure what the point was. Is anybody out there saying overcoming addiction is only a matter of "willpower?'

No, of course not. The concept is not defined any one way, but many people overcome addictions and other harmful habits by sticking to a plan, in spite of urges.

I don't know what else one would call that. It better not be the only tool one has, but it sure does help to have it in one's arsenal.

Now, an article written by a pee-sigh-chiatrist is always going to be met by me with a dose of skepticism, but this one... it strikes me as particularly false straw-manning the topic.

Not at all.

In theory, there are territories, and they would like you to attend the church in your territory. Over the years, I have gone between my territory church and the church where I attended grade shool. I am back to the one where I attended grade school. Pastor is thoughtful, non-political and gives great sermons.

Territorial church? You hear about the pastor's vacations in Europe, he begs for money for improvements or you get the associate pastor who does not speak english. Plus... hippie music and lots of pauses that annoy me.

BTW, I did look it up online and you don't need any official permission to go somewhere else; the new parish just has to agree to sign you up. I'm in SE Michigan, which is awash in Catholic churches.

142 good evening everyone!
I have come here to give THE LIST OF THE DAY!!! (insert cool echo-y effect here)

today the list is top 5 most underrated guitarists...

#5. Rick Neilson - Cheap Trick okay, I know, dude is a dork, but he is rock solid, just doing his job throwin guitar picks and grabbing new ones without missing a note.
#4. Prince - the guy was known for dance pop, songwriting, purple stuff, whatever. He could still shred that shit hard.
#3. Brian May - Queen. He never gets the credit in that band. Yeah, Freddy had the most epic voice in rock music but he wouldn't have been as epic without the rocket scientist layin down some serious guitar shit.
#2. (breathe) Keith Richards - Rolling Stones. I know he isn't flashy, but damn! the guy is having a blast. Just playing like a boss, looks up, sees thousands of people screaming, seems surprised they are there, and gets huge grin on his face. He is still living because he loves what he does and is pretty damned good at it.
#1. Jerry Reed. Seriously, no one even thinks of the man as a guitar player. Singer, songwriter, Burt Reynolds sidekick, sure, but people forget he knew his shit with a guitar.

And that is the TOP(toptoptop)FIVE(fivefivefive) LIST(listlistlist)!
I have one for the most overrated guitar players too but I'm pretty sure calling Eric Clapton an overrated hack could start a fight.

146 You're probably sick of hearing me talk about it, but today's launch from LC-39A was a Big Fucking Deal.

That is one of the two most historic launch pads in the world. The other one is in Kazakhstan.

LC-39A launched all of the Apollo moon missions except for Apollo 10, which launched from LC-39B.

39A launched about 2/3 of the Shuttle flights.

Today's launch was the first from that pad since 2011. I am thrilled beyond belief to see it come back to life again, and SpaceX has big plans for it going forward.

189 Have you ever quit smoking? Have you ever lost weight and kept it off? Fought the bottle and won the battle? If you have, did you have will power? Will power is a dangerous, old idea that needs to be scrapped.

++++

Quitting a habit is different in kind than trying to moderate behavior. I quit smoking years ago. It was a 2 pack a day habit and quitting was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. But, if I had tried to just cut down on my smoking, it wouldn't have worked. Oh sure, I could have cut down for a while, but I would have crept back up to 2 packs eventually.

Obviously, you can't do the same thing with food. You have to keep eating something, and for almost everyone who tries to reduce their food consumption, they eventually end up back where they started.

As far as booze, most problem drinkers would love to hit that sweet spot: a few drinks so they are a little loose, but being able to not keep going until they are face down in the gutter. But, for those with that kind of problem, cold turkey is the only thing that will ever work.

Will power can work if it is used in an absolute kind of way. It is the balancing act that is impossible for most people with a bad habit.Trying to smoke, drink, or eat just a bit is where will power fails.

True story: when we moved into our house, the old guy living next door was the inventor of Panavision, and told us Tom Cruise used to live there (later proven by Scientology mail that came our way)

also, Joe Walsh has a house, one of many in the area, and LL Cool J, or whatever his name is, lives nearby. i often see somewhat familiar faces at banks, stores etc, but since i don't GAF about such things, i'm not sure who most of them are.

Resident Evil grew up in the same neighborhood awhile back, and went to school with the kids of that time period's stars... back then she says they were just folks, but the media frenzy these days has ruined all that, in both directions.

work

friends.

They say that to be really successful, you have to give up one.

To be super successful, you have to give up two.

Well, lately I've given up friends, and wow, my life is so much better! Most of the people I know are crazy ass liberal complainers with more issues that decades of National Geographic.

In addition to being the kindest, warmest, bravest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.

I can't speak to what kind of emotion he put into his playing, since I've only ever heard the studio albums and a few bootlegs, plus there's the story about how he came up with his solos by noodling around and then splicing the recording into the solo he wanted, then teaching himself to play it. Still, an undeniable technical master.

Then he did the trick with sliding the pick along the length of the strings on the Strat and working the Crybaby pedal so I could see how it was done.

Head asploded.

370 Fuck it, here I go anyway.

Being someone who played guitar for 45 years, I respect the dudes who have mastered their genre. The ones who hit the top level of ability in their genre. The ones who a very good live, they are hitting on all cylinders and not some studio queen. They are accomplished. There are many, many out there that fit in this group. These are the true masters, but may not be innovators. They are just really good. Having a signature tone or sound doesn't always mean "innovative" either.

then you got meh, the ham and eggers. Might be good performers, might put on a good show, or be in a good band, but ability wise are nothing frigging special at all. The kind of dudes where another guitar player of higher caliber can learn their stuff drunk off their ass. Nothing to see here, move along.

Then you got the true innovators. These guys are very...very far and few between, and I'm not talking about the ones that find some old trick and spam the fucking shit out of it till people think they invented it (EVH anyone?)

Most of the guitar players I saw listed here are just fucking good at what they do, and that's where the vast majority want to be.

Btw, Richards? lol don't make me fucking laugh

If President Trump meant a specific act and not just the general "Sweden now the rape capital of Europe", it was probably the rape broadcast on Facebook by the Moslem rapists although that happened around January 23rd.

He has no humility. That's about as simple as I can state it.

If you sat down with EC and told him how great he was, he'd explain to you that he is nothing more than a student of the greats. Then he would proceed to list all of those influences and provide reasons why they were so good and had such a huge influence on himself as well as on the history of the guitar.

The Edge. Not so much.

He said no, you're a musician because you play notes musically on an instrument.

I said yeah metal only, that's where I'm master and commander.

he said but you're still a musician.

I looked at him and said. "but these go to 11"

398 RE: The MSM, I think the problem is really simple.

They don't listen.

They've spent 8 years covering for the blumling stumblefuck and have just stopped listening. Utterly and completely. LIke your mostly deaf great Aunt Hilda.

Also... Trump can speak in sound bites, but he doesn't always do that. He tells stories, and the MSM just kind of extrapolates.

" you look at what's happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this. Sweden. They took in large numbers. They're having problems like they never thought possible."

He did not say there was a terror attack in Sweden. At all.

However, the MSM, who are collectively playing iphone games while looking for Tinder hookups, heard "Sweden " and "safe" and took from that "Trump said Sweden has had Terror Attacks."

Because they were not listening. At all. Even though it is their job.

And that's pretty much the Left. Every culture has a right to exist, except Western culture. Non-Western countries having homogenous cultures is fine, but we have to replace ours with diversity for its own sake.

This is cultural imperialism against the West, with the objective of utterly obliterating Western Civilization so that they can replace it with their fascist One-World Government.

452 Dear torabora:

My best friend's cousin finished her schoolwork in Germany because her school in Iraq is no more, and she was offered a scholarship there.
Texas A&M contacted her in Germany based upon her excellent reputation in the research field, and the dept wanted her to teach on a visiting fellowship.

Now without the visa she will return to a life in Iraq where her expertise will be ignored.

I wasn't asking for a GoFundMe for her, or a job, or a passport.
I was asking if anyone here knew about approaching a state rep about such matters.

The person in my life who I might've asked, instead of taking up your valuable time, died suddenly two years ago. My father was born in Iran, came here to go to school, met and married my mother after converting to Christianity, and spent 40 years at the same engineering firm, and 40 years at the same church, and 40 years being a tremendous neighbor, local civics leader, and cyclist. In his spare time he was the World's Best Dad, who taught me, among other things, the foundation of my conservatism.
In his spare time, he wrote D.C. on behalf of a few members of his Iranian family, so they were granted visas to come here and go to college. It's what my friend is trying to do now.

Wow, off-topic. What I meant to say: Suck my dick, you rude bastard.

Mots pathetic thing is you just know Obama instinctively took Argentina side because oppressed South America, colonialism etc... Except dipshit doesn't realize Argentina does not consider itself part of South America in that sense. They consider themselves far superior to their neighbors and look down on all that victim hood mentality. But the community organizer of course sides with them to show he is Down For The Struggle.

My inspiration, back when I played bass, was Bakithi Kumalo, probably best known for the slap bass solo on "You Can Call Me All" from Paul Simon's Graceland. The televised live show has a longer solo that's much better. I say "inspiration", because I wanted to sound like that, but I was barely competent on the bass even on the best days.

Oh, except my band in high school played the Yardbirds' "For Your Love" at the talent show, complete with a bass solo and a drum solo which we both completely aced. So that was nice. 1997 was pretty much the last time I ever made a bass guitar do exactly what I wanted it to.

471 Brian May is definitely underrated, and he does it mainly on a home made guitar he and his dad built back in the early 60s out of reclaimed wood, something from a mantle, something from a an old table top,I think there were even a few motorcycle parts thrown in for good measure. "The Red Special" I believe its called.

Same reason athletes or anyone else stops. It got frustrating and I didn't feel like I was getting any better. I hit a plateau, and it would take a lot more effort to get to where I would be satisfied with it, so I ditched it and sold the G ampersand L and went on to do other stuff. Cooking is rewarding and I can tell when it's going right. Programming too; I like going back and tweaking things I wrote years ago to eke a little more out of them. Music, I will never be as good as someone who's born to it, and while I'll noodle on a guitar now and then, it's not something that I feel I'll ever "get right", so I let it go.

Also crippling self-doubt and judgement. It's why I never tried graphic art like painting or anything; if I mess up a chord, it goes off into the ether like it never existed. If I fudge a sketch, I have to look at it forever.

507 Now without the visa she will return to a life in Iraq where her expertise will be ignored.

522 Coordinate with the A&M contact - you want to include A&M's request with yours, and vice versa, even if it's going to different congressmen. And, let's be honest - a rep will sit up and take notice at a request from an institution like A&M.

Ideally, she should have a letter offering employment in Iraq upon completion of her fellowship here, or be able to show she owns property or a business there.

525 And, at the risk of being a brutal cynic, she could just apply for status in Germany and wait this thing out. With appeals and all that taking as long as they do, she could be there for as long as it might take to get in here. And, in any case, it would beat Iraq.

Bingo. The article was garbage, for more reasons than one. My favorite thing about the article is it "proves" its case simply by asserting its case multiple times while filling paragraphs with faux intellectual gibberish and examples that sound like evidence but are instead just familial relations to the hypothesis.

This type of article has the ability to influence only the weak-minded, the disinterested, and of course the political brothers-in-arms.

I could set about proving the color blue doesn't exist simply by saying it every fifth sentence, while talking about every other color, how things absorb colors and only reflect what they don't absorb, how people's eyes can fool them (citing optical illusions involving color), how some animals can't see the color blue at all, how no one even agrees what blue is because sometimes it's more green and sometimes it's more purple, and maybe cite some times when the sky isn't blue. Like when it's cloudy, or night, or when you look from a different angle, such as from space.

All of this sounds really deep and all-encompassing, like I've really thought hard about this issue. Yet none of it proves blue doesn't exist. The author of the article would make a better magician than scientist.

He has classical music training in his past, which lets him work in other mediums such as keyboard.

Fuck yeah he borrowed; they all do. Maybe he's the Eastwood of Rock; never really recognized for the massive fanbase he has by TPTB, but he just keeps laying down hits.

I probably play his stuff more often than Zeppelin.

So the DNC is debating having Keith Ellison, Muslim, as its head and Chelsea Clinton attended an I am Muslim rally in New York yesterday. Interesting plan.

Multiple paths to 270 with that strategy. All of which require Muslims be on their very bestest behavior ever for three years and 11 months. I'm not a betting man, but if I was...

And that's why I hate the RINOs so much. Global prestige and 5 bucks will get you a cup of coffee-like product at Starbucks. Nations don't exist for prestige pissing contests, they exist to do right by their citizens. Ours is fucking up by the numbers, where that's concerned.

I'd be just fine with being just another country, and not even particularly loved, as long as we still had the strongest military. I wouldn't mind not being obligated to pay to put out everyone else's fires. "It's not my problem" and "no" are some pretty powerful words when you master their use.

Just a very odd image that doesn't appear to advocate for anything good. Noticed in coverage of various 'protests' that the printed signs don't get coverage and the so-called handmade ones do. Grassroots, ya know. Heh.

567 My new "get the USA to save your ass" policy would boil down to three questions.

1. Are you a major US ally, presently or historically, and are you still in good standing? (If the answer is yes, we help. If not, proceed to question 2.)

2. Are you a major US trading partner, and not the aggressor in this war? If the answer is yes, can we interest you in Lend-Lease equipment at reasonable interest rates? If the answer to those questions are no, proceed to 3.

3. Are you willing to sign up for US Territory status, upon being rescued from your impending annihilation or annexation? If the answer is no, there is no question four, piss off.

569 I suppose the best reason we saved the Europeans from communism was as a bulwark against aggressive Soviet communism and the sake of the minority of citizens that saw the danger. Well we won that but have been infiltrated by the left anyway. Should have just imported the decent Europeans, sent our leftists there and built the bulwark here. Maybe we should do this with the fight against Islam.

Yeah, I know we can't import tens of million Europeans. We can only do that for the third world.

Remember that those governing threw open their countries' doors in the first place because declining birth rates put their social welfare programs, particularly those for older citizens, in danger of financial collapse. They thought newcomers would assimilate and cheerfully take up the financial burden. The fact that those they threw open their country to would outbreed threm and exacerbate the financial rot by cheeing up resources from other social welfare state pillars never crossed the pols' minds.
