Overnight Open Thread (18 Feb 2017)

Raise your hand if you think Democrats will actually do this. Poll: Americans want Democrats to work with Trump. 73% in fact. I guess that Hollyweird "Resist" movement isn't quite catching on with the serfs.

Sleep

Note to self, don't get a court date on a Monday. Sleep-deprived judges dole out harsher punishments. Good info if you're a manager though.

Butt Pads

So this a thing now? The case for a bigger ass.

Cat Video

Rome, Sweet Rome

Kind of an update on that story about a Marine MEU traveling back in time to ancient Rome. Sounds like it is still in developmental hell but I'd still be interested in seeing it. It would probably play better as a mini-series on a cable network.
Edit: I missed that this is a 2011 article. My apologies. No real update on this project.

Aircraft Animal Strikes

I've hit my fair share of birds in flight and just missed a pack of wild dogs crossing the runway in Aden, Yemen but thankfully have never actually hit a deer or other large animal on the runway. How often do airplanes hit deer?

Summer Ride

You know, this should be required at the next moron meetup.

The Media

Sorry MSM, it is going to be a long time, if ever, that you'll regain the trust of the American people. With one tweet, Chuck Todd reveals the truth about the mainstream media.

People like Todd have become so convinced of their importance; they forget what is they're supposed to do. Reporters and news anchors have the duty to report the news. They need to gather the info, check facts, ask questions and then provide the information to the public who digest and make decisions based upon what they have seen or read.

Chuck Todd's tweet is indicative of the condition he and other journalists suffer. They are no longer content to report. They believe it is their mission to tell people what to think.

Mosquito Repellent

Well, Spring is right around the corner. Probably. Want to ward off mosquitoes? Candles and bracelets are worthless.

Lies

When President Obama's National Security Advisor lied, the media laughed.

Submarines

Japan goes back to the future with lithium-ion battery powered submarines. Hopefully they won't use Samsung batteries.

39 One reason the Dems have to keep focusing on bullshit trivia like "Russian Hackers" or Melania's fashion line is that all the really substantive objections to Trump's policies are that a lot of them are swiped from the Democrats. They can't really argue against protectionism because that's been part of their rhetoric since forever. The same for his populist anti-corporate talk. He's saying the same stuff Dems have been saying for a generation, so they can't call him out on it.

136 OT - Update on puppy Whiskey for those who were around yesterday:

Vet did a bunch of tests and all came back negative, including Giardia and Parvo (thank God!) Put him on
an IV for a bit because he was somewhat dehydrated. Also gave him
something for upset tummy as well as an antibiotic--just in case.

Vet
thinks it's probably due to eating a holly berry or leaf and is feeling
positive about full recovery because Whiskey's condition seems to have stabilized and he
was able to get him to eat a little of that Hill's Prescription Diet.

He's been eating a lot more today and is definitely a whole lot better. Things are looking great. So relieved.

The content makers demand it. They all have separate deals for distribution in different countries. VPN lets users obfuscate what country they are in and get product that they aren't supposed to be getting.

Of course, as the end user, your only recourse is to withhold your business. If enough people do, it still goes up the line. If Netflix has less subscribers, they are turning over less money to the producers, so maybe they will motivated to change the rules.

How much is anyone willing to bet that the next Star Wars movies suddenly involves the Empire being opposed to alien "immigrants"?
----------------------

Immigrate from where? The Empire already controls the known parts of the galaxy.

In any case, Lucas's shortsightedness in casting has already been used to claim that the Emperor was biased against non-humans. And people have since expanded it to say that he was also biased against non-whites.

As for Marvel, the films are separate and distinct from the comic books. The people doing the comic books have no say over the films. So the stupidity that the printed stuff has been up to lately hasn't leaked over yet. And the people doing the films have, so far, kept a fairly close eye on ensuring that the content isn't overly controversial.

Consider - Captain America: The First Avenger was a non-ironic patriotic film.

I'm not saying they won't screw it up in the future. But they've been smart about it so far.

178 Netflix in Canada offers HALF of what they offer in the United States; movies and television shows alike.

Most of Europe is lucky if they get a third.

There's a reason why there were literally dozens of VPN companies explicitly advertising their services as a means to circumvent regional licensing restrictions.

Netflix turned a blind eye for years, but eventually, VPN traffic reached a point that content providers and distributors began threatening to pull the plug.

For the the retail mail box places (Mailboxes etc) you use the street address of the mailbox business, (1200 Main street, suite 1205 for example.)

To rent one, you have to supply a previous address, and Identification with that address.

201 Mortimer, you do understand that Netflix has to collect payment in order to buy or produce content, right? If they deliver to a VPN there is no way to keep you from reselling the stuff they stream to you to someone else when you aren't using it. Like someone on the other side of the planet, or just someone you know who has an opposite work schedule.

Plus, the actual movie folks want feedback on where stuff plays well and where it doesn't, and VPNs cut that off since they could be anywhere.

217 Seriously , there is NO legalre requirement for content providers like Netlfix to prevent VPN use.

Particularly when the VPN user is inside an "approved" country. There is no violation of law , coptright or otherwise.

You shouldn't have to give your street address to get a PO box.

Again, privacy was the first victim of tyranny.

Posted by: Mortimer, Finish Her! at February 18, 2017 11:01 PM (KgpWR)

++++

Couple a things:
1. With a VPN, they can't tell what country you are in. You could be in US or Europe or anyplace else as far as Netflix can tell.
2. No, there is no legal requirement for Netflix to deny VPN traffic, except perhaps licensing agreements. But, the content producers - Hollywood - have no legal requirement to license their product to Netflix. Whether it is a written agreement, or merely an understanding, If Hollywood tells Netflix that they are not going to get the licensing deals unless they do something about VPN traffic, then Netflix doesn't have much of a choice. They don't have enough of their own content to be able to tell Hollywood to go pound sand. If they did do that, they would lose a lot more subscribers than just the VPN users. Since they can't say no to Hollywood, they say no to VPN.

Lawyers have nothing to do with it. If streamers want to stream Moana, and Disney wants to put contractual limits on who the streamers can stream it to, that's between Disney and the streamers.

Lawyers are only involved in making sure that the agreed upon terms end up in the contract that everyone signs.

No.

It's not.

HULU then Netflix had payment records from me . With a US address. They decided to cave in to pressure that MIGHT come from content providers.

MIGHT.

No one took any legal action, they just pussed out.

They cut me me off mid-subscription. And when I complained they told me that I was using " criminal tools" and that they had "caught" me. That went over really well with me.

272 And ... to continue with the streaming/content bullshit, HDMI is a total piece of shit. They have convinced people that it's around to give better resolution but that's a crock. HDMI is nothing but a protection scheme. Happily, it can be broken with something as simple as a $20 splitter ... but the fact remains that the jerks pushing HDMI are probably the same people who were trying to foist those insane dongles on us all back in the 80s and 90s. What the content people are trying to defend are ridiculous prices. Sure, it's their right to try ... they can try to sell digital books for more than people used to pay for paper books. But, at some point, people are going to look at that and say, "Hey!! That's fucked up!"

Guess what ... it's fucked up. And they're fighting a losing battle, anyway. I mean it's really laughable. And they think that trying to make things as much of a hassle for people as they can - to defend their cash box - is going to work out in the long run with a product that costs nothing to store and nothing to dupe a million times. 323 Netflix to stop blocking TV shows and movies across Europe as EU orders it to stop geo-fencing content
Netflix will be required to open up its catalogues in Europe following a ruling from the European Parliament.

The online streaming service regularly uses "geo-fencing" to limit certain shows and films to certain geographical locations .

However, bosses in Europe have demanded the US-based technology company allow people to access their online media wherever they are on the continent.

It would mean that French viewers could watch their favourite French shows whether they are staying in Germany, Italy or Spain.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/tech/netflix-stop-blocking-tv-shows-9823660

Of course, this only applies to the EU, not the US. But, since there is pushback against "geo-fencing", they may eventually relent regarding VPNs.

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at February 18, 2017 11:54 PM (R+30W)

324 And I would add, the content providers, at the moment, are about the equivalent of the long-distance providers of the 1990s. People could see that you could talk long distance for nothing over the internet but the phone companies still held the ground and were charging ridiculous amounts for long distance. They did this for as long as they could (with help from governments, too) until the idea of nearly free long distance (since one was already paying for broadband) finally made its way into the general population.

This is the current state of music and movie retailers. The last gasps of $5.72/minute long distance charges while it is clear that the real cost is close to 1/10th of a cent a minute.

EU will allow Netflix to continue geofencing and region blocking based on billing addresses.

You're right. And I fell for their misdirection. This piece explains it better, but short story is they will continue to sell different libraries in different countries of the EU. The only change is that if you are traveling, you can access your regular subscription when you are traveling within the EU.

349 @337 The original, "long" run of Poirot was 1990 to 2001. Producers and scenery changed after that. Some liked it better, but, not as many neat cars for Hastings to drive his leetle grey cells around in.

I was also just wild about the theme music.

@355 All the regular episodes from the first ten+ years are the original run. There were several two-hour sets in there. People who comment on such things say that the re-runs are carved up to allow for commercials, so if you can find those years on a fully-licensed and permitted recorded format of the original broadcasts instead of some cheap cheating international cartel of back-alley video screenings, you'll likely enjoy them more. 378 Holy moly, even cat videos can't bring peace!

Yes, horseshoes were a poor analogy. Ideally films and tv shows are more like artwork, and the price for art varys wildly.

Yes, distribution costs are very low, but not zero. Yes, there is something of a monopoly now, but Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and others are changing that due to the sheer volume of content that is being produced by them and paid for by us. And the market will work out the unit pricing through competition.

The way I get to purchase content right now has some suckage, but it is getting less sucky every day. I dropped cable because I didn't want to support the liberal channels and I can't buy individual channels. Cable, Dish, Netflix, they all extract viewing data and use it to make money, so that is gonna go on no matter what.

My point was simply that shows cost money to produce, and good shows cost a lot. I don't agree with Hollywood's world view, but I do want to reward the folks that put out the few good shows that I enjoy. Movies can't change the way that the music industry changed, there is no way to see a live version of The Terminator, for example. You can see your favorite actor in a play, but it is not as close an analog as seeing your favorite band live.

Have I made a copy of a friend's CD? Sure I have.
Have I ripped a DVD for a friend? No, too time consuming and too much quality loss. Would I share my streaming connection with a neighbor? No, because the cost is low enough that they can easily get their own, and at the end of the day somebody's gotta pay for this stuff or people will stop making it.

My dad hated cats, too. So I never had them growing up. I asked him about it, but he never gave me an explanation other than he hated them.

Fast forward to me at age 42, when I adopted a pair of kittens (loooong story). I soon discovered that I was allergic to them. Waking up in the middle of the night unable to breathe was my first clue. But I was so in love with them by that point that I would have sooner had my lungs removed than give them up.

I worked with my doctor and tried several different medications until we hit on one that worked well. I used it for years, then noticed that I needed it less and less, until I finally stopped taking it altogether.

I think I actually built up an immunity to the cats.

I forced myself to stay through the whole rest of the show and I've got got some bad news for you guys (in case you didn't already know all of this stuff). The left really and truly believes, with all their heart, beyond a shadow of a doubt, no ifs ands or buts, case closed, that: 1) Trump is a clown/buffoon and completely insane and also dangerous. 2) The Russians completely changed the outcome of the election and got Trump elected (the how and why are never ever mentioned). 3) Trump is so dangerous for America that the entire intelligence community has decided together that they must break any and all laws to take him out... in order to save America, and they are OK with this. 4) This is the biggest scandal in the history of the country eclipsing all others in every possible way, much much bigger than Watergate, Lewinsky, Teapot Dome, Iran-Contra, Whiskey Ring, Sally Hemmings, Credit Mobilier, Petticoat Affair, bigger in fact than all of them combined.

It's absolutely terrifying to see so many people spoonfed an obvious narrative from NYT/WaPo/CNN and they just accept it at face value, never ever looking into anything themselves.

This really and truly is America's Second Civil War. A Cold War. For now.

435 I liked "The Accountant". Imagine if Raymond Babbit was raised by Gunnery Sargent Hardmann.

The showdown with the villain was a mess, but the rest of it was pretty cool, as far as super hero thrillers go.

I'd much rather have seen Edward Norton play the lead role (Ben Affleck is an insufferable ass), but it was an interesting enough premise to make me want to believe it is remotely possible. And I was willing to watch Ben Affleck.

There's nothing to worry about.

Ask yourself one simple question : What Voters are the Democrats trying to reach with this behavior?

The answer, laughably, is there are none.
There is not a single vote they NEED to sway that they can hope to sway with this behavior.

All they are doing is digging a hole deep enough to bury themselves.

508 There's only 1, really. At least, as far as I know

I don't see you playing with Skid Row.

So, now I know you...and I am/was a fan.

Depending on when you split, I probably saw you a few times as well!

509 For playing what has been done so many times before?

That is the music from three Iron Maiden songs, with some meh lyrics.

Right? people who believe we're actually going to tell the earth what to do can't believe we can fly to the moon.

I still think Sebastian Bach and Blair from Facts of Life are the same person.

520 Probably already noted several times by now, but one of the photos in the linked WWII history article (first 1,000 bomber raid) shows B-29s, while the caption describes the aircraft as RAF.

Pretty sure the RAF didn't fly B-29s prior to the surrender in Europe.

And with that ridiculous trivia observation, off to read about the pathetic state of Soviet forces in summer '41 when their German partners came calling.

521 Then again, the one I was in never made a hell of a lot of money either, especially in the very beginning, my era. I still talk to them, not sure things improved drastically. They make a living, but they aren't driving Ferraris, that's for sure.

They got so much fucking airplay for that 1st LP.
They were all over MTV, playing everywhere with everyone for 3-4 years afterwards...

I would have thought they were doing really well. Weird shit that record biz.

Oh, sure. But I think it's worse than that.

If the deal you inked isn't a fair one, you are constantly underwater.
And, I don't think many bands are as worried about the details of their first deal as much as just getting a deal.

Posted by: garrett at February 19, 2017 03:02 AM (p+Qx5)

1-2 years, left during the writing of the first album. My influence was in a few tunes. I just wasn't liking the show they wanted to do, it wasn't fitting the music at that time. I did get to play with them again about 15 years ago when they were needing guitar players yet again, but the ones leaving ended up staying, so that was a month of prep out the window. Tell you the truth, I never really like the music all that much, was lighter than I like.
