Saturday Morning Weird News Dump

sat.jpg

Good morning Morons. I hope your week went well and that your weekend goes weller, gooder, better for you. Your humble Cob will attempt to amuse you with some weird stuff.

Here are a few things that didn't get too much attention here at the AoSHQ.

  • Hey Honey, let's move into a bus.
  • Weird? Talk about insecure.
  • Wanna bet they are Hillary voters?
  • Honest guy? Sure, yeah, whatever.
  • More proof that Nickelback sucks.
  • 2 is good, 3 is better, 4 is a no-go.
  • Hey, where did that chunk go?
  • Weird animal sighting in Australia.
  • Maybe donuts will endear him to the Cops.
  • Chocolates for your sweetie?

Chew on these stories. Or whatever is on your mind this morning. It is an open thread after all. Just remember the golden rules, no running with sharp objects and play nice with others.

One take-away from this whole "Curios Vic, and a stay at the hospital" is great respect for Mrs. Vic.

11 NASA TV is covering the SpaceX launch, scheduled for 10:01 am Eastern.

    https://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html#public

This is their first launch from Launch Complex 39A, one of the two most historic launch pads in the world (the other one is in Kazakhstan). It's the first launch from 39A since the Shuttle was retired in 2011.

I remember watching the first launch from that pad, Apollo 4, in November 1967. It's thrilling to see it come back to life again.

20 I used to rent a house to two big, fat nasty lesbians back in the day. They both were easily 300 bills each. One was crazier than the other and had an old school bus which she would store all her hoarder crap in. The city would chase me down and demand I relocate the school bus. The two aforementioned bull daggers used to fight all the time and when I told them they needed to make the school bus disappear the crazy one started crying like a baby and the "man" one started whopping her ass for bringing the school bus to the house. Needless to say the school bus got moved and so did the rugmunchers.

I always wonder why all the lesbians I see on TV don't look like those 2 twisted sisters.

40 I first visited NASA at the Cape in 1976 (or thereabouts. I am only 29 after all). Everything was closed up for touring, the explanation at every stop was "being refurbished for the Space Shuttle."

Next time I went was 1996. July 4th, actually. Boarded a bus for the tour, the video starts off with "welcome to Cape Canaveral, where we are proud to be the home of 13 endangered species!" Fucking Gore. Big thing then was "Mission to Planet Earth." My comment - I don't know if anyone has noticed, but we are already here.

Lucky you. I've never been there.

SpaceX signed a 20 year lease a few years ago, and has been making extensive modifications to the pad to support their Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles. They built a new hangar next to the pad, and of course they had to completely rebuild the launch mount which had been used for the Shuttle.

They don't use the VAB or the crawler. They roll their rockets out of the hangar horizontally and erect them on the pad using the strongback.

Just great. EJ's voice is still excellent, even if it appears he can't hit those high notes, cuz he doesn't try.

Sterling musicianship. Interesting jams built around old favorites. And a couple of surprisingly deep cuts, like "Indian Sunset" from "Madman Across the Water".

Though if he's going that deep, I wish he'd've played something from "Tumbleweed Connection" (my fave of his albums. Not a bad song on it.)

Anyway, pony up the cash and check it out.

60 I love the "Tiny House" article. The press is so cute when they talk about how cleverly people dealt with a problem, while completely ignoring any surrounding factors that might be the reason rent is sky high. Not to mention the article briefly mentioned "student loan repayment."

I wonder if the husband's employment matches his degree? Best guess, no, because "he had to work overtime to pay the rent." Last time I looked, blue collar jobs are where most of the overtime is, not white collar jobs.

63 On FB some local news type (I think she was a reporter not an on air personality) was saying that "America First" was scary to people because it was a thing in the 30s, and that the America First Party became the American Nazi Party, and so, scary.

I replied "You know not one thing there you wrote was true, right?"

I mean, you can look it up. The America First Party was not formed until 1940 - and it was disbanded just after Pearl Harbor. The American Nazi Party wasn't formed until 1960, and that wasn't by America Firsters but Klansmen (who were Democrats but who's counting?). I said she was probably thinking of the German-American Bund, which was backed by the Nazis, and the only kinda sorta link between the Bund and America First was Charles Lindbergh, who got an award from the Bund, and made speeches for AFP.

She was totally unfazed by being shown that every single thing that she had said was false, and said, well people are scared (meanwhile other rabid lefties were cheering - you know what else happened in the 30s? Hitler and lynchings!)

So I asked, do you really think that people today who are claiming that they are afraid of Trump are really remembering something from 80 years ago, or do you think that they are being told a false narrative that they should be afraid?

To which she replied "it's a good question, I will think about it," and promptly disappeared.

My mom met a retired NASA seamstress while touring Cape Canaveral a few years ago when she and my dad were there for a launch (the Orion). Get this: not only were the space suits hand sewn, but the ship's interior is handsewn - 12 stitches to the inch, through many layers of material, including coated fire-proof material. And those tiles on the outside of the space shuttle? Each one of those were encased in a handsewn fabric sleeve (also flame-proof coated materials). Each tile was marked w/the seamstress' name, so when the Columbia shuttle was rumored to have been caused by a tile there were several NASA seamstresses worried to death they had caused it.

When you think of modern space shuttles you assume it's all hi-tech, modern manufacturing - but there was still some very precise, handcrafted parts that helped the program succeed. Very cool!

Yea, the work we were doing was specifically on the the crawlers, there were two of them. I heard they were moving them to South Carolina or something as they were no longer needed since we were getting out of the rocket shooting business.

Funny thing, the technology we were selling them was originally developed as part of the old Soyuz program. Now that's full circle.
Posted by: JackStraw at February 18, 2017 09:24 AM (/tuJf)

The VAB and crawlers were designed specifically for the Saturn V, and were also used for the Shuttle.

The Russians have always moved their rockets to the pad horizontally, and then erected them at the pad. SpaceX does it the same way. Horizontal assembly buildings are cheaper than vertical ones, and the workers can use ordinary commercial lifts to move around rather than specialized equipment.

Maybe. But the crawlers were one awesome piece of machinery. There was a ton of very sophisticated engineering in those things.

The combined weight of the crawler and the rocket was so heavy they had to regrade the special "road" they built for them every time they moved a rocket to the pad.

Memory is gone, but seems like a few years ago, one Air Force commander (humorously) banned some music from the clubs on the base.

Best I can remember, it was because every time music got played, something unfortunate would happen (like a broke inbound aircraft).

Can't find anything on it though, maybe just bad memories or a duffel blog post.

The racist characters in the movie are unhistorical additions. I could handle it if the movie stuck to the fact that the women played an important role but weren't some sort of secret driving force of the space program.

My mom is a quilter, which is how she got into such a great discussion with the woman. Since my parents were at the launch as guests of our local science museum (they held a lottery for volunteers), my mom got the woman to visit the museum and give a talk about it. What's really great is that the woman had been a big fan of the space program (and a quilter) and when she discovered that they employed seamstresses she studied up on everythng related to it, learned all about the special material they used, etc., and then watched closely for job openings. She was hired because she was so familiar with the programs, the material, etc. Great story of having a very specific dream and making it happen.

In Michigan we have an old airport from WW11, and it was built for making bombers. Since most of the men were in the service, women were hired to build the planes, and turned out the planes at a rate of 1and a half per month.

I always am impressed by all the knowledge on this blog, and get slightly intimidated, but like to share anyway!
BTW, the old airport is Willow Run and they have a really interesting museum on it all about the women and building the planes.

No, the second stage is also LOX and kerosene. They sacrifice some performance in order to reduce cost.

SpaceX discovered an entirely new way to blow up a rocket back on Sept. 1 on LC-40. They have been using superchilled LOX for awhile in order to increase capacity and hence performance.

They use helium tanks mounted inside the LOX tank to pressurize the LOX tank. Those helium tanks are composite overwrapped pressure vessels, or COPVs, wrapped in carbon fiber.

That day, they tried loading the helium faster than previously. This caused the LOX trapped in pockets under the carbon fiber to turn into *solid* oxygen.

Solid oxygen in contact with carbon turns out to be extremely touchy.

210 Resentment is one of those important "tells" in a dispute. The very term indicates an acknowledged imbalance of power in the relationship.
Think on it, have you ever seen someone who is an equal with equal status being resentful? It is something someone who is in a subordinate or subject position feels against someone with greater power over him.

That notation is easy to parse, but that's no longer an issue. We have had things like yacc for decades that make it easy to parse the more familiar forms, which are easier (for most of us) to read.

I'd use a gun, but I would hope that the guy who was trying to mug me would reflect afterwards, "it was wrong to try to mug people. Maybe I should reform my ways". Not "The system is rigged against me! I'll bet that guy is a racist who oppressed people to get where he is! I'll show him, someday!"

222 Several Rutgers Business School students were barred from entering their annual career fair last Friday at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick for dress code violations.

Rutgers Business School sophomore Tyler Farnsworth said he was unable to enter because he wore suede shoes, and that a majority of students prevented from entering were wearing blue shirts, blue suits or brown shoes. He estimates that about 40 students were turned away from the fair for dress code violations.

This year's career fair dress code flyer tells male students to wear "clean, polished dark dress shoes," but no sneakers or boots. Men should also wear black or dark gray professional suits. This flyer is linked on the school's career fair web page.

235 lindafell, I saw your comment about the ISS going by. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but there are free apps that you can download for both android and iphone that show its path. Believe it or not, it goes over your head around every 90 minutes or so, give or take (and by over your head I mean within some huge number of miles within your vicinity).

With these apps, you can look ahead for about 10 days or 2 weeks to see when they will be visible in your area, and you can set an alarm for it to alert you. The apps have a compass built in to show you where the ISS will appear. No math involved!

You don't need binocs or anything to see it if it's a clear night. I actually have two on my iphone, ISS Spotter and ISS Finder, because I like different things about each.
