went to the toy store this afternoon, in the Fing pouring rain no less, and paid of my Italian Arisaka... it comes home on the 28th, because i don't want to be in Valencia after 3PM, trying to get back into The Valley at rush hour. WOOT.
stopped at the other toy store, where they had the Carl Gustav for examination, and the upper of Resident Evil's PTR-91, which we need to render featureless this year, along with a few others.
i brought them home as they can't do anything about the rust on the front sight of the CG, and have no $$ for a muzzle break this week, and thy needed the room in their storage, as it's filling up with featureless builds for other customers.
all in all, time well spent, but the drive home on surface streets from the north of The Valley to the southside was more than a little wild.
unexpectedly, when i looked in the LA river when i crossed it, it was only a few feet from the top of the channel.
yup: it's been raining like a mongolian rat bastard all afternoon long.

Sometimes its pride in what you do. I'm an insane perfectionist in what I do, be it guitar building, the music, or the Harleys. But that's also rooted in a lesson from murphy's law where there is never time to do it right, but there is always time to do it over. I hate doing shit a second time.
For me its a personal voyage, I don't expect perfection from anybody else, except for maybe band members and doctors. lol

I did some surveying across southern Wyoming after college one winter along the Union Pacific RR lines. The rails truly sing as the train races over them. It is a beautiful sound.
It was amazing to watch the trains in the distance coming towards you. All you could see was a rolling white cloud until it was upon you. Then out of the cloud burst the roaring engines and cars. The rails bounced on the track ballast singing metal on metal. After it roared past the tailwind of snow buried you hiding the train once more.
Got to see this hundreds of times that winter.

Reading the Birth Order Book helped me see that I was a perfectionist who had given up and couldn't accomplish anything because I knew it would be imperfect. Learning that (and knowing that I *was* loved by those near me) made it easier to put in the effort to finish projects and accept if they weren't what I had hoped. If I wasn't confident in the affection of my family I suspect it would have been much harder to accept the the imperfection.

yeah very true really, they seemed to have gotten really dumb over the years. I will say though, I had a good experience yesterday. I was on a plane last week, and when I landed my sinuses were totally messed up. I never get sick, don't get the flu, no flu shots, no allergies, very very rarelt get a cold. Shit goes around and I never get it.
Well in the beginning of this week I started get that swollen gland on the right side of the neck, was getting painful to swallow, and by Wednesday night it was getting hard to breath because my throat was closing up, to where when I went to sleep I was up every 5 minutes gasping for air. The family doctor moved, so I didn't know what to do. They built a few of these walk in clinics in the area, so first thing yesterday morning I went. The place looked real nice, on the ball, the doc took me in looked at me, checked a few things, said yup I know what it is, gave me a shot and said the swelling would be gone by the end of the day, and gave me a prescription.
man no shit, 2 hours later it was already down, and by 6:00 it was like it never happened. I was in and out in less than an hour. I was totally impressed.

Man let me tell you. I talked to at least a dozen people about that place since yesterday and they're getting really popular. They seemed to be equipped to handle a vast amount of stuff people normally would go to the emergency room for. One person thought they broke their finger and went there. They fixed him up in a splint, told him what he actually did, and he was out the door in under an hour. He said it was great not to sit in an emergency room for hours and hours waiting and getting hit with that huge bill. Another person said its like those places are popping up to take a load off the emergency rooms.
My experience was amazing. As soon as I got home I got a call from one of the Harley shops down the street that wanted me to come in for a quick fix on something. They call me when they get strange things, and this one was fixing some weird LED problem that needed soldering on the circuit board. I said yeah not today, I just got back from the docs I'm all fucked up. An hour later I felt fine and went to the shop anyway. I mean shit, from feeling like death to fine in that amount of time. That was a miracle.

Unless you're looking to see if there is anything good on there, don't bother. Otherwise, pull the drive and connect it to another machine. USB devices for this purpose are less than $10 now. They're handy to have around but in this case you can probably just go directly to the Linux install.
A P4 with Vista is somewhat odd as none shipped that way and that means they had to think it was worth the cost and effort to put it on a machine that was already a bit elderly when Vista launched. I would have recommended against it on the likelihood that the machine lacked the resources to run Vista well.
I long had a rule that if a machine was more than two years old when a new OS version launched, it almost certainly wasn't worth upgrading, unless the machine was very high end for its time.
This change with Windows 7 and everything after. Microsoft decided they'd find a plateau representing a minimum platform and haven't increased requirements since. Even lowered them in several areas with structural improvements.

I think the only thing that saved my ass was she wanted something a little more roomier inside. She loved the way the BMW drove. She ended up going back to the Acura, which made me happy, we had 3 so far and they go forever with no problems. I got rid of my last one with 260,000 miles on it, and that dudes been cruising it for 2 years with no problems.

However, I don't think it's bad to hold yourself to high standards. However, true perfectionism can be extremely difficult in a relationship, especially when it's a badge of honor. Realizing that you have that issue is, I think, the first step to working on it.
I lost my best friend due to her perfectionism and her inability to simply admit she could possibly be wrong. She's a lovely person, but had a bad side she could never admit, and, at times, took it out on me.
And yes, votermom, you're right, it is about fear and insecurity. I hope my former friend looks inside herself and realizes that she is imperfect like the rest of us.

Hah! Holding F2 while it booted did the trick. Got into the BIOS, and set CDrom as first boot device, and got it booted to miniXP from Hiren's Boot Disk.
139 gB hard disc. It has a bunch of rap mp4's and some pr0n on it LOL, indeed. So, now download the Linux Mint, burn it to a DVD, and tell it to wipe HD and do a fresh install.

I think Corey had started to dabble with speed a bit, again, right before he died.
I had a buddy who did some session work with them in the late 80s early 90s. He said it was the single craziest experience he had ever had and he bowed out after a week...too many drugs.

If you're a group intent on controlling others by threatening to call them nasty names, gamers are probably the worst group to go up against. Vicious name calling is pretty much par for the course in most games these days.
On the other hand, I wouldn't be so quick to say that the SJWs lost. Yes, it's true that the actual gamers couldn't care less what the SJWs have to say. But I think the big companies in the industry have folded (or were already in the SJW camp to begin with). Decisions are being made - even by Japanese game companies - with an eye toward appeasing the SJWs.

Like all things in mechanical contact, springs in the fork tubes of motorcycles when they are first installed are not 'seated', in the context of the springs rubbing the walls of the tubes. They tend to squeek for a while until the coils have been scrubbed in a bit.
That used to drive me crazy when installing new/different springs in race bikes.
I put together a rotating steel tube with end caps that were drilled for a rod that passed through the length of the tube. The tube sat in rotating rollers, and a bell crank simultaneously pushed/pulled the rod back and forth.
A new spring would be put in the tube, the spring held captive on the rod. Pour in some Brasso, crank up the apparatus, and a day or so later, the outside of the spring coils had been scrubbed in.

Bioware is a company I'd classify as already folded *long* before Gamergate. They had same sex romance options available all the way back in Jade Empire, roughly ten years ago. They wanted to put one in Knights of the Old Republic back in 2003, but apparently LucasArts nixed that idea. So they only included subtle hints about a couple of NPCs in the game.

And honestly I think the story was much tighter from a narrative standpoint.
Mass Effect 3 was something of a disappointment (although I am not one of the people who think it was the worst thing ever), but one of the biggest problems was the narrative fuzziness with the romance options. It was bad enough when you had two romance options at the beginning (Choose the other one!) that had to be carried narratively through three games, but then by the end of mass effect 3- how many different options did you have? Alas, poor Kaiden, as the meme goes "Better to die a hero than to become the weird gay friend."

I had no problem with the romance options for ME3. Really don't care if you want to go the gay guy option. Afterall you can bang Liara as FemShep or go after Specialist Trainor as well. Romance options was not the problem with ME3. It was the ending. And the fact that they are having ME:Andromeda start off before ME3 and then jumping ahead 600 years in another galaxy I think really pushes how much they fucked it up.
Another problem is the short shaft you got with your former squadmates from previous games, but weren't in this game. Should have been handled like Liara in ME2 Shadowbroker DLC and Wrex in the ME3 Citadel DLC. Make them a squadmate for some or all of the mission you are with them on rather than just having the be there. You already have a woefully short squad already so more variety would have been good even if its just a mission here and there.

The stated on the forums plan for ME2's romances was originally that if you didn't stay faithful to your absent ME1 love interest, you'd suffer the consequences in ME3. Apparently those consequences ended up being a quick apology, based on what I've heard from others.
Mass Effect: Andromeda is due out next month, iirc, and for the first time ever I'm extremely hesitant about a Bioware game. ME3 had the awful, awful ending. And when, after blazing through the game just after release, I logged onto the forums to try and figure out how I'd somehow missed the real ending of the game (seriously - I was certain I'd somehow missed something important), it was clear that the Bioware staff had no idea why gamers didn't think it was a great ending. I played most of Dragon Age: Inquisition, but then set it aside and haven't since mustered up enough interest to finish it.
And now we have Mass Effect: Andromeda, in which all of the potential love interests will once again be bi (which was also the case in the HUGELY popular /sarcasm Dragon Age 2), and one of the head guys on the development team (might be a writer - can't remember for sure) has been posting racist tweets.
Apparently the first part of the game will be available to play for free shortly before release. So I'll probably check it out and see how it looks.

Inquisition was not 'bad' per se. Dragon Age has always suffered compared to Mass Effect for the strength of the narrative. I thought they were going to use the Darkspawn and the Blights to create the same kind of monolithic threat the Reapers were in Mass Effect, but they shied away from it in subsequent games. I think they realized that with Mass Effect, they literally made the Reapers TOO credible in that it was hard to imagine an non ex machina ending where you could win.
Inquisition was decent, but the whole thing felt decidedly bland. That is part of the problem with making the character and characters be able to fit everything- it comes at the sacrifice of tightly written characters.

During ME3, if you don't do one or two specific things (I don't remember what off the top of my head, though warning her as mentioned above is apparently one), then she dies after (or possibly at the end of) her personal mission.

If I remember, she can be killed in either. On the suicide mission, she can die if you do not do her loyalty (which is included in the romance) and Buzz is right, if you do not warn her about Kai Leng she can die there as well.

I think the main key to ensure she lives is that there is a conversation with her at some point after the Citadel attack by Cerberus, either at the apartment or via video in the Spectre office and you have to mention Kai Lang to her. If you don't do that she will die at Sanctuary.

Yeah, they're idiots. I don't mind Shepherd dying. But its fucking stupid that the options are "Good guy ending" is doing what the bad guy wanted, but its ok cause you're the good guy.
"Bad guy ending" is actually ending the threat which you set out to do, but hey its bad because it will ultimate result in war between synthetics and organics, even though if you do it right you prove that little fucker wrong and get peace between the Geth and Quarians.
And the "Ultimate ending" is removing the free will from all sentient people across the galaxy. That's right, in a game all about how the choices you make will affect the outcome, the best ending is to deny the rest of the galaxy their own choices.

Control is just doing what the Elusive man wanted to do. To me that is just you being controlled by the REapers, not the other way around.
Domination(? red ending) is probably the ... best, but it comes at the cost of destroying the Geth and any other sentient AI- essentially destroying all the work you did with the Quarians and Geth over the last three games.
The ultimate good ending? Yep, physical rape of every life form in the galaxy. Yay!

yeah, if its the fight that pissed me off yeah, it was very unfun. I just remember every time I had him close to beat he would spawn some shit, and I was just too low on ammo, and it was just way frustrating. I remember these low sections in the floor I was trying to fight from. I tried a dozen times and said fuck this.

The Kai Leng fights are a piece of cake on Insanity compared to the last final Reaper fight on Earth, and the fight in the hangar of the Normandy in the Citadel DLC. Those were true bastards compared to his fight, at least with the squad I had chosen. I didn't die against Leng. I died multiple times in the others.

One thing I liked about the Flood - you know how during the first half of the game you ditch your human weapons when you get the chance to pick up the Covenant gear? That'll get you killed against the Flood. The human weapons are the better option.

I did not have much trouble on that one that I remember. I had more issue with the teleporter, IIRC. I almost always went for the 'slo-time' powers (soldier? ICR) and that almost always did the trick- plus not fighting in the open, using the terrain to set up where you could shoot at one of them while they were the only ones to shoot at you. Lot of death traps in that area, IIRC and the banshees were worse than the behemoths.

It was redone because the general consensus was that Peter Dinklage phoned it in and didn't do a good job. There is always somebody who likes the version most everybody else didn't. I thought the voiceover in 'Bladerunner' was right but all the fanboys raved over its removal in later releases.

I have no clue, I know I didn't like the new dude. if you read the comments on the you tube vids not many seemed to like him either, I had almost 400 people in my friends list from that game, and I don't think 25 liked the new dude. I used to Sherpa the raids, and I used to hear it all the time. But who knows. I didn't like the way the game was controlled on a psychotic level, they just kept fucking with it. They nerfed everything to the ground and just kept creating new metas. I didn't play the PVP side, so it just kept getting to be more and more of a piss off trying to beat raid bosses with weaker and weaker guns and less and less ammo. Wasn't the absolute worst if you knew the game, but when you Sherpa noobs in the raid it got to be a pain in the ass.

Destiny on the whole is a really good game. The character movements and gun play is top fucking notch. The only downside is its very light on content, you could beat the original game in one really long day, and each dlc in probably less time. The other bad thing is the randomness of the loot. People played for months and didn't get the super gun another could get in 2 days of play time. It was insidious, they had gambling experts coaching them on to hook people to keep playing a low content game, and the way they did it was by making the loot random, way random. So basically they turned the game into a frigging slot machine.
The worst part was you couldn't get on raid teams if you didn't have certain weapons. The must have in year 1 was the gallerhorn, it was a nasty rocket launcher that was great for melting certain bosses, so of course if you didn't have one, not many would let you on a raid team. I had 1500 hours in the game before I got one, some people never got one. It was a clusterfuck. Another bad thing about it was the actual game that released was nothing...nothing like the game was originally supposed to be. They talked about open world, it wasn't even close to an open world. They basically sold it as skyrym in space. Nothing like it. But, with all that said, its fun if you just play want a very fluid shooter, do the campaign and NOT get mixed up in gambling aspect of the day in and day out search for weapons you may never get.

Sounds a lot like Diablo 3 when it first released without the Real money auction house. The skinner box element to loot games (Borderlands is another) has to be balanced right, or it is a waste of time.
The complete randomness of loot made sense for Diablo 3 if you realized that the real money auction house was the entire reason for the game. The monetization of gameplay.

Sounds like that pay to win shit I hear was creeping into games. You could use real money to buy tokens to buy shit in the game. destiny has that also, but not for weapons, it was for bling basically, and it was still only a chance, you could buy treasure boxes that may or may not have certain items, that's bullshit.

Found that out when the Linux Mint install program told me "Windows 8 already installed. Are you sure you want to overwrite?"

SATA started appearing in systems wayyy back in 2003 and is in its third generation, with the 4th, SATA Express, pretty much stillborn as PCIe SSDs blew it away. Million of motherboards in the last two years shipped with SATA Express ports but there are drives on the market to connect to them. (Asrock has a clever box that lets you use the bandwidth to create USB 3.1 ports in a front drive bay.) The presence of SATA is no assurance of modernity, especially when the machine is known to be a P4.
$25 is cheap but I don't know that it would be worth my time unless I had a specific use in mind. It's a low end machine compare to most Android phones these days. There are just so many things people take for granted now that will drag on such a machine. But running Linux Mint is likely as good as it is going to get as far as refurbing it for somebody goes.
