Ace of Spades Pet Thread

saturday pet thread.jpg

Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Be a good Moron, sit and stay.

*****

L, Elle was kind enough to watch the entire Westminster Kennel Show and send in the following report.

The 141st Westminster Kennel Dog Show took place on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Dog shows are familiar to some of you like MisHum and Kodos the Executioner, both of whom have spent time In this fascinating world competing. My takeaway from watching Westminster is that the judges know nothing. I know this because Best in Show has never been awarded to Labs, Golden Retrievers, Shelties, or Great Danes. Also cankles and bad shoes are pervasive among the female handlers.

This years winners:

Working group - Boxer
Hound group - Norwegian Elkhound
Toy group - Pekingese
Non-Sporting - Miniature poodle
Herding group - German Shepherd
Sporting group - Irish setter
Terrier - Norwich terrier
Best in Show: Rumor, the German Shepherd
Reserve Best in Show: Adrian, the Irish Setter

The Herding group has only won BIS once in 1987. The winner, like this year, was a German Shepherd.

Honorable mention goes to Ace's doggie who won the Master's Agility Championship in the 24" Division, a Border Collie named Kaboom.

What else has been going on in the world of animals. Let's take a look.

Speaking of our 'Ette L, Elle here is another submission from her.

Reason #3,612,789 that dogs are superior to cats, Dogs are moral. Cats not so much.

How cats would behave if allowed into bars.

Meet The PetMorons

mister cat.jpg

Take it away Larry.

Dear M.H.,

Long time lurker Larry dutifully answering your call for more cat photos.

Meet Ms. Mister. She adopted us ten years old and has made the fundamental transformation to lap cat from outdoor huntress par excellence.

Just to be clear, no, she is not transgendered. Our then three year-old granddaughter named her Mr. Mister, but when a raccoon nearly tore her tail off in her misguided defense of the food bowl that we stupidly used to keep outdoors, the vet corrected our misconception as to her sex. The minor name change ensued.

Thanks to all for making AoS a daily "must read" for me. You have made quitting the increasingly execrable Hot Air easy for me. LOVE the pet thread!

Regards,

-Larry

PS: Obviously a moron, I sent this to the wrong email address last week...

Quite the winter photo submission. Here's the story about this abused dog cutie.

Hi,

I post sporadically as “Skree” - daily reader, voracious lurker. This is Jasper in his first snow storm.
He loved it. He’s in California and I’m on the East coast now so I miss him very much.
You can tell he’s an unhappy abused dog from this photo.
Don't judge me.
Cheers,

Lurker Bill submitted this photo. Quite an interesting cat. Check this out.

This is my "Neph-Cat", Max. Max is a Savanah cat, I cat sit for practically every day. My nephew learned the hard way, "Don't let a Jungle Kitteh get bored"! They WILL expose the insides of your couch in an afternoon...

Yes, he is on an leash. Yes, he LOVES to climb things: Trees, cars, vans, people, you name it he will climb it. He also will chase anything (even the neighbors Chesapeake Bay Retriever). In short, he's a handful, but gentle, too. Knows he can hurt you, but won't.

Chronic Lurker Nathan submitted this photo of Diesel.

Our last pet for the day is Das Hell Hound.

Here’s the BOD pic I promised of my mastiff Das Hell Hound, GoofenHund Extraordinaire. He would like to sincerely thank everyone for the extra opportunity to nom his favored, ahem, treat.

A big thank you for stopping by today. And a big thank you folks for submitting pet photos and animal stories. If you would like to share something with us, you can at petmorons at gmail dot com. Here's hoping you and your pets have a great weekend.

7 The German Shepherd dog that won best in show at Westminster is from Edgerton Wisconsin. He was shown by his owner /breeder/ handler. There's a video clip of them goofing in their back yard. The guy looks like your typical Packer fan, Probably gave Rumor a Leinie's when it was all over. He said he and his wife and kids were probably just going to head back to Wisconsin and let Rumor be a dog. I like that.

10 Just an observation on Conor and travel. All our Frenchies learned to get in their car seats and travel with us. They almost immediately learned to go to sleep before the car had left the driveway. Conor, of course, chose a different path to travel. I have a dog booster seat that elevates him about a foot off the car seat so he can look out the window. The interesting thing is that he will sit up in that seat as we travel and be looking intently out the window for hours as if he's taking notes, so that when I leave him at the truck stop he can figure out how to get back home. He won't sleep unless he's dead tired, and even then when we get to within three or four miles from home he will rouse himself and resume looking out the window until we arrive and debark from the auto.

11 "If you want drama stick to humans, if you want happiness hang out with dogs".

Maybe, but I fear this is part of the problem with liberals. They view immigrants as docile people who will not compete with them like all those mean people in high school. We shouldn't be afraid of interaction with *peers*.

Dogs are coming to appreciate a little outdoor time with all the rain at our house recently. Kind of a switch in attitude.

Heh. I've got a photo of Bubby (also a tuxedo cat) in virtually the same pose as Ms. Mister. Only, with no people and more booze in frame.

Regarding my photo: The Red Roof Inn I stayed at during the hurricane nearly resembled a dog park as it was once of the few "pet friendly" hotels in the area. While there, I managed to catch a dog that had escaped from a room upon housekeeping opening the door. Also, I assisted a guest who had called down to the front desk and reported that one of his cats had disappeared into the bed box frame. I spent most of my time chatting with fellow pet-owning evacuees by the pool. As evacuations go, it was kinda nice.

39 Perfect timing. I had my second outing of the week at the pet store with our Newf, Emerson. He promptly embarrassed us by sticking his great head into an open bin of treats, filling his giant maw, then spat them on the floor, to eat one by one. It must have ben 10-12 treats.

The pet store employees just laughed and said that happens all the time, so they keep cheap treats in those bins.

Still, I feel like a bad mom.

44 As for the 'dogs are moral and cats are not' link, cats were never tested so fie on that theory.

Cats do not want to participate in silly human tests.

Does that mean they're stupid?

No. It means that they don't want to participate, that's all.

Dogs want to please humans. Cats are more vested in pleasing themselves.

Well they do for the most part. However, they do know right from wrong. They do not go through the trash, dig holes in the lawn, take food off of the counter, jump up on the couch, and all that, when you are in their presence. I often wonder if they weigh the possible punishment before the hi-jinks.

58 Ben Had,

We've been around the grown and schooled briards, and the protectiveness is the selling point (only so much a softball bat and vinegar spray can do while walking). We just haven't been around pups yet, and the neighbor helping with arrangements thinks I'm odd for worrying about puppy teeth on a toddler....I guess German tots don't squeeze and his puppies, or somehow never get nipped.

63 Euro- I would just make sure the puppy has lot of the play worn off and then let the little one love on the puppy. I would also get one of the larger stuffed toys that has a squeaker inside and let your toddler squeeze that. If the little one can make the toy squeak it's a good way to learn about "too much".

If it's been a few days, she's probably fine, but I'm paranoid about my cats getting into people food. They're a bizarre combination of adorable fuzzy badass murder machines that can drop stone dead from eating onions. Mine will occasionally get a few threads of string cheese or a strip of deli turkey, but that's about it.

84 Max is gorgeous - can definitely see the Serval part of him shining through. I love those types of breeds because it's an ethical way to own a "wild" cat. Servals and caracals and sand cats are beautiful, house-sized cats but they just weren't made to be pets.

Well, certainly not pets, but then not politics either... It's definitely spring here because baby spiders have hatched on the back porch and are practicing making webs all over the place. They're about the size of a pinhead.

I think they're probably what I call "banana spiders", but are really "golden silk orb-weavers".

I tolerate them when they get big because they thin out a bunch of flying pests.

I do shine a flashlight in my path at night to make sure I don't walk, face first, into a web!

Posted by: JEM at February 18, 2017 05:40 PM (TppKb)

107 Thanks NCKate, the vet gives better than 50/50 so there is that. She has three ops and a lot of scars now but if I can have her for a few more years its worth all the money. Thoughts out to Bert and his cat. We will all meet loved pets on the other side.

Posted by: NZFrank withanM2 at February 18, 2017 05:41 PM (FXQNk)

108 She is 14, is on prescription hyperthyroid food (both cats), and has had diabetes in the past and went into remission (which is common in cats). Then she seemed to develop diabetes again a couple of weeks ago, and the vet prescribed insulin injections. After the second injection, her blood sugar spiked way up, and she became really sick.

She has bursts of energy and is playful and affectionate, and then suddenly will get weak and begin drooling, which may last a few minutes, or longer.

It's been a journey to and from our vet (who also has a kitty who is diabetic with hyperthyroid issues).

This has all been going on for about three weeks. I'm not going to let her suffer, but she sits up and holds her "arms" up to be held and cuddled. She flips over for belly rubs.

This is just tough.

When we first got our cat (who was about 2), my Mom would try to feed her people food. She would cautiously approach the food as if it was a grenade, sniff it delicately, and then back away, as if we were trying to poison her.

The only people food she's interested in is milk.

Doesn't try to eat anything off the floor.

113 Navybrat,

Savannah cats can be a handful. Max is ***THE*** fastest cat I have ever seen. He can jump REALLY high, too. That's the Servil cat in him. If you're considering getting one, MAKE SURE, the cat has papers and the breeder (or owner) can prove your cat is, at least, 4 generations (F-4) removed from the Servil. Some areas require a wildlife permit under 4 generations, I'm told.

A show quality kitten in my area (Florida), will run you about $1,400.00+, hence the leash and harness. There are a couple of Savannah rescue sites, where you can get adult cats, or those under F-4, I've heard of some cats for $50.00 from one.

I would suggest a trial period. This breed is NOT for everyone, but they can be wonderful friends, especially if you have time to play with them. Very smart cat. They will take longer to bond with you, but, once they do, they are awesome!

If you decide to try one - Good Luck and Good Hunting (you'll understand why I say that the first time you take or let it outside).

119 Dogs and cats are by nature hunters. By being so, in a natural state they do not eat everyday. By thinking we are doing the best for our pets sometimes we do them a disservice. Anyone that has been reading this site and Ace's IF can gleen the idea that sometimes we kill them with kindness.

BH: That is an excellent way of looking at it. I know I feed based more on trying to fit everything into MY schedule/routine than trying to think about what might be best for my dog. It certainly makes sense for the larger breeds that have a true hunting background and capability, and I guess it would also apply to the small non-hunting dogs as well.

126 Hrothgar- We tend to think that domestication means adapting to our life style. My dogs have 60 acres to run and hunt on everyday , so yes they will eat more. I also notice on the days that they aren't able to do that, they are not hungry. Something that reaffirmed my thinking is that Brody for some reason upchucked and it was his dinner from the day before, undigested. I feed a super high quality dog food and if it is staying in his body that long he doesn't need any more.
